Rush - The Boys in Brazil Documentary 2003

- Documentary included with the DVD Rush in Rio (2003). Provides an almost hour-long look at the band and its crew during the final dates of their 2002 Vapor Trails Tour, specifically their first-ever Brazilian shows in Porto Alegre, Sao Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro. Behind the scenes footage shows the band weathering the rigors of a sometimes comically catastrophic tour, with their innate humor and grace. This documentary, by longtime Rush photographer Andrew MacNaughtan, shows the band and crew at their most light-hearted, though still thoughtful. We see the band's arrival in Brazil, to the unexpected onslaught of Brazillian fans boiled over in the culmination of a lifetime's anticipation. Following this are insights from the band and their crew, which provide a view into their longevity as well as ample evidence of the individual strengths and varied senses of humor that helped them achieve it.
I especially love the tearful girl who said “It’s not just music. They… they teach us so many lessons...” I always felt the same way; over 40 years, Rush affected who I became, through their lyrics and also through their example of living life with personal and artistic integrity. I’d have a hard time naming better role models for young people.
You said it well in every interview they are all class acts. My Lerxt Bytor shirt arrives today an homage to the greatest.
I forever maintain that this crowd was the single greatest representation of the fandom as a whole, hands down, bar none…they did us *insanely proud.* 🤘🏻♥️
People are screaming in the stadium before the show and Neil is showing Geddy a book of museums he found LOL!
“so long like waiting for you to come down” “well, we were just upstairs”
He's so damn funny.
I love in the end credits when Geddy just cracks Alex up with his "shrimp cot" bit
That’s probably the funniest part of the whole documentary when he says that.
My Lerxt shirts arrive tomorrow!! So stoked
I was there, right in front at the Porto Alegre show. Me and my friends arrived around 2 pm and there were already about 100 people in line. The gates weren't even open. We were so young and full of energy. We were already big time Rush fans, and I had just bought Vapor Trails a few weeks prior. There was no streaming, no smartphones, no social media, no UA-cam.. just a Rush CD to play. I knew most songs and lyrics by heart, and Roll the Bones was one of my favorite ones. Yet, out of all the songs, I remember clearly that Freewill spoke to me and hit the spot like never before, despite having heard it hundreds of times. As the show approached its ending, they opened those washing machines and threw a bunch of t-shirts to the crowd. I managed to grab one, but in the end I was overpowered by the crowd, who came ruthlessly after it. What a magical day. That was 20 years ago in Brazil, and I now... live in Canada.
Those sound like awesome memories. My very 1st concert was RUSH at Ivor Wynn stadium in Hamilton, August 1979 with attenence around 8000 fans. I had just turned 17 and had been a fan for a couple years. That RUSH show blew my freakin mind it was so good. Welcome to Canada, it's a great place to live. ✌️🇨🇦
The fans make this DVD. They're not jaded at all. They are there, 100% into the moment, 100% uninhibited.
What kept these guys together especially Alex and Geddy over the years, was the fact they both liked soup.
Geddy saying why Neil wasn’t part of press was just so great. True friends. That’s why they lasted so long.
Yes. They managed it with the highest class.
All makes sense right. Keep it positive!
He had every right to be on his own, away from the press and other prying eyes.
He wasn't a showman or public entity like Geddy and Alex. He'd come in, do his thing and then hop on his motorcycle, heading off to the next gig. You didn't have to ask for any more from him at one point or another, and what he gave us was wonderful from beginning to end.
We still miss you, Neil.
Oh this trio was, is and always the greatest Canadian trio ever!!
One final note az a life long fan....they NEVER got full of them selfies...a rarity in any field, career,or endeavor
Watching this on the anniversary of Neil’s passing. RIP Professor 🥁
Farewell to a king.
I was there in their São Paulo shows both in 2002 and 2010...I thank God everyday for giving me that opportunity.
Rush is my life...
You fans all did an epic job such .energy
The enthusiasm of the Brazilian fans is awesome
Millions of hardcore fans. Quality music is quality music.
That would have been a great energy to experience.
40,000 people in Rio de Janeiro
60,000 people in São Paulo
@@KeeceWookieyou can tell they’re happy as hell and ready to get it done. And of course, you KNOW the dudes from Sepultura were going to be there, which they were, as you can see them at the end of the show as people were leaving.
If I’m not mistaken, I think they hit Brazil just that one time and that was it.
Brasileiro é brasileiro n tem como
brazil takes the crown as the greatest crowds ever

@@sansbudget Mais uma rivalidade com nossos Hermanos...
Exactly what I always say about them-the Rio crowd is forever THE greatest Rush concert crowd. They did our fandom PROUD! 🎉♥️
Every time
💯
I love how Alex and Neil are running to the van after the show and Geddy’s like,
“I’m walking here!”
Lol Mel Gibson throws a nod to that when The villain Raul almost gets a tree dropped on his head in Apocalypto. I'm walking here !!
I was living in Rio de Janeiro when Vapor Trails was released, and of course I went to the show in Maracana Stadium. Priceless!
That is so awesome. I wish Rush recorded more shows in Brazil, the crowds are absolutely insane. Thank you for sharing
@@superslayerguy the best part is, unlike in the game of soccer / football were half the stadium is pulling for one team and the other half for the other with tempers aflare... with RUSH in Brazil, everyone inside the stadium is there for the same team. Everyone goes home happy as winners
RUSH in RIO had the most cameras than any show to date. Also they did not know how many fans they had in Brazil, cause they did not include the black market RUSH merchandise.
Yeah, at that time original cd's were expensive and not everyone could buy them, you had to record the songs from the radio at a casette tape.. the internet was still at it's infant stages
"The real reason we are here is to make everything better.... We're going to make airplanes out of beef" - Alex Lifeson. The funnest Rock Star of all time.
That concert had *** *_INSANE_* *** energy coming from the crowd. Geddy, Neal and Alex must have literally FELT that power coming at them on the stage, and it must have been almost intoxicating in it's effect. Glad they could still keep it together and play an excellent set.
RIP Neil, Andrew, Peggi. so glad you were with us for as long as you were, we will continue to remember in your memory
"we can talk or not talk for hours" direct quote from Best In Show.......fucking epic!!!
I can’t fit into a UA-cam comment just how much this band, their music, and in particular, Neil’s lyrics have affected me. It was also great seeing the mighty Sepultura giving props.
The sheer work it takes to get the gear, lights, electronics, wires, booms, Neil's setup.....its amazing
RIP Professor!
I was in The Porto Alegre show, my first great show!!! Incredible guys!!!!
Greatest band ever!
🗣️ *LOUDER FOR EVERYONE ALL ACROSS THE UNIVERSE*
I love how much they care for each other
I was there in Rio. Incredible day. Memories retorno.
Must have been a spiritual experience. I saw Rush one time here in NY.
The best and kindest band ever. They surely showed grace under pressure. ❤️
It’s a rush thing
This is such a great wholesome documentary. Crazy to think about how long ago it was!! I love these guys ❤️
Finally I found another girl who loves Rush!😁 I'm not the only one!
Katherine im single and house broken😉
As a drummer I greatly admired Neil. He had far too much tragedy in his life.
Mr Peart is a Canadian legend, a treasure that could never be duplicated. A very very sad loss in the world of percussion, rock music❤❤❤
Miss seeing them live 😢 Such great music they were still doing right to the end
I love Rush.
Alex is one of the funniest guys I’ve ever seen on camera in my life
How wonderful that they ended on a high note (no pun intended) than to outstay their welcome.
Also, Alex is always hilarious.
Also also, physically speaking, Geddy looks damn good for a guy his age.
rush 'outstaying their welcome'. lol.
The pit check at the end - priceless
The love I have for this film is immeasurable
I was there!
That young lady tearing up gets me! I suppose I would do the same if I met Geddy!
This gave me chills big-time. BY-TORand the SNOWDOG that was pretty cool. Been a rush fan since 1974.
Thank you to the crew thank you Geddy Alex and Neil for giving your all for all of us
The Vapor Trails tour was the first time I got to see them live. It was a spiritual awakening. I honestly thought to myself, how have I got this far in life without seeing them live before now?! But very enlightening!I
I, due to my age, was only able to see them for the first time in 1987 for the Hold Your Fire tour. I feel I caught them too late until I see a comment like yours. Then I remember that I need to be more grateful for what I have had.
I saw the 14 times between HYF and R30. Not a bad run!
I love how Geddy and Alex love their fans so much. Signing so many stuff for people and they just love it. I understand Neil's reasons and I love him. I'm in a band, and this how I would like treat my fans.
These guys are so lovely
Thanks for posting this. I'm so impressed by the 'Latin' crowds on their live videos, that I really wanted to learn more about this tour. We love Rush here in the states, but these fans epitomize what makes music, especially Rush, so great!!
Rush in Rio, MARACANÃ. Estava lá, inesquecível!
You guys really made it!!! And you are sorely missed!!! Till next time...my budz
Rush is Life!!! ❤🤘🏼
These guys have been bending my head for decades!
RIP Neil. Legend..
I remember many yrs ago....when this vid had no ads =) these guys rule!
"Don't, I need makeup!"
"You need more than that, honey!"
ROFL
Alex is a natural entertainer
Hard to believe this was twenty years ago…I know it’s a cliché but dammit time does fly by…
“Freeze this moment
A little bit longer
Make each sensation
A little bit stronger”
Thanks for your music 🙏❤❤❤
9:50 How can't you f*** loving a friend like Geddy
Man….. I miss the Rush shows.
One of the best, most awesome documentaries I’ve seen on my favorite band. I’m 65 and have totally worshiped these guys from day one! The love these guys have for one another after all these years is truly amazing. Play on men !!!
Quanta humildade no backstage, essa é minha eterna banda. :)
Nossa👍
this is some of the best documentary music ive ever heard wtf
beyond the lighted stage is awesome too!
22:08 christ man even when he's just warming up he still kills it.
when your drum warmup is better than 99% of all drummers drum solos YUP
He does that lol
ahhh WHAT FLAVOUR WAS THE SOUP!!!!!
My Heroes
Pretty sure it was cannabis flavoured. 😉
South American audiences are the best ❤ more should play and video their Concerts there for sure ❤
Wow there were more than 3 women at a single show! Didn't think it was possible haha RUSH forever 2112
They must have thought it was Bush concert 🤔😇
I know this is a joke, but my goodness, there are TONS of women at Rush shows. I went once by myself to a show and was flanked by two women also attending alone.
@@redbarchetta in which city/tour? Did you talk/make friends with them?
@@Texturas75 Probably some Cleveland bruisers.
When that hot you Braziian lady was crying, so was I.....so endearing.
Neil looked great and very fit on that tour , back with a vengeance
My True Soul Brothers !!! Love You Jimmy
Para sempre Rush!
I miss these guys......
❤ Immortal!
The energy of the Brazilian fans is second to none. Bravo!
I used to watch this with my dad all the time when I was a kid!!!
What a nice memory! Your dad is so cool.
@@Texturas75 with me as a kid in the early 80s (born in 1978) I grew up to my dad RELIGIOUSLY playing Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps and Berlin '82 "Live Trans" Beta and VHS tapes. He was and still is a huge Neil Young fanatic, and I got him into RUSH later on...
But he would ESPECIALLY play the Live Trans Neil Young tape rewinding and replaying it all day all the time. I was around 5 years old when he first rented it and a second VCR from the video store - that way he could record it. That's how big of a tight ass he is LOL he would go through all of that hassle before spending a couple more dollars for the VHS version itself
He used to pick me up and hold me like a guitar and then sing Computer Age or Sample And Hold loudly right along with Neil Young... I'd be laughing my ass off... he would then get tired and put me back down, and then I would make him pick me back up like a guitar and "play" me again just because it was fun
Class act.
BEAUTIFUL!!! BEAUTIFUL!!! BEAUTIFUL!!!
There parents must be the most proud parents all three super fn talented super successful but most of all TRUE GENTLEMEN !! NEVER COCKY ITS AMAZING TRULY THREE OF THE GREATEST MEN OF OUR CENTURY
Una de las mejores bandas de todos los tiempos
Agree
Melhor banda do mundo
A melhor de todos os tempos!
The perfect blend .Long live RUSH,can't thank Geddy...Alex...and...Neil...enough!…......……..........
7:05: Extremely underrated joke.
Weird to hear the pre remix versions of these songs again rewatching this
And to have such a great great friendship w each other and experience all that it must hve bn devastating to loose Neil
Alex: I think I have a shrimp caught between my tooth.
Geddy: What's a shrimp cot ???
Both: lol
The laughs these guys share just show how good their friendship is.
“Is that something they sleep on? Like they’re having a lil’ nap?” 😂😂😂
@@RushFanatic87 I love the entire hotel lobby segment with Geddy and Alex. Like when the lady greets them, and then says, "Thank you for coming to Brazil.... we waited so long for you to come down".... Alex then responds... "well, we were just upstairs...." 😄 and then he grabs that gigantic cardboard telecaster and starts "playing" it. I mean, it doesn't get any more Lerxst than that 😄
Show no Brasil sempre e muito melhor
24:51 ALEX (not a crew member) help Neil with his dance shoes (Audible-ing Road Show right now so I know that's what he wears) to make sure they didn't get wet on the way to the stage. That there is brotherhood.
Banda sensacional!!
Pena os fatos..
There will never be another band like RUSH R.I.P. Neil ... Hope you meet up with John Rutsey and share stories.
saudades do velho casarão, Estádio Olímpico Monumental... estava lá nesse show.
"I miss the old house, Olimpico Monumental Stadium (Porto Alegre). I was there at that show."
non Brazilians or even brazilians who don´t follow football:
The Olimpico Monumental Stadium was Grêmio's second stadium, it's home from 1950 to 2012, when Grêmio moved to the new stadium, Arena Porto Alegrense.

RIP Neil Elwood Peart
1976 BTW the 3 guys in the space ship at the end represented Alex, Neil and Geddy. Please check out some new Rush. The Garden live from the Clockworld Angels tour. Their last studio album released in 2012. A song representing the cycle of life and the importance of living in the present. Very different from what you have reacted to so far.
Procuro o CD Porto Alegre Trails 2002, alguém tem?
They make airplanes out of beef.
That's a pretty good Jerry Lewis impression, Alex!
Just makes you want to be a soup addict, doesn't it? Xxx
love your name bro
The reason they "didn't know they had that many fans in S. America" is because of the bootleg record industry. It is huge in S. America. So their record sales looked minimal but in fact, the bootleggers were doing great. (And I'm beginning to think that "soup" is a code word for something else ... Hmmm... what are they famous for in Brazil?)
The Best in Show reference at 22:46!
I love how goofy Alex is! And it's always sad to see Neil in these videos.
"Like Steven Seagal?"
"YEAH"
Alex always has great jokes.
"It`s the second hand smoke I`m worried about. The second hand that always has a cigarette in it".
Top level comedy.
