    Bosnianbill today I picked my first padlock ! I have a collection of padlocks (Don't ask, it's a habit I picked up 3 years ago for some reason). I found an ABUS Titalium padlock 64TI/40 model. It didn't have a key and it wasn't locked properly (The other end of the lock wasn't in the hole (Don't know the names in english). Me having OCD I couldn't stand having it like that. So I bought a European thickness lockpick kit from a Chinese website (Didn't plan on picking anything else, so I went with a cheap kit). After a week reading about how locks work and by watching some of your videos about locks that involved security pins, I managed to pick it open and it's all how it's supposed to be :D I'm planning on buying a 50 euro lockpicking kit and start practicing more on my padlocks! Thanks for giving me a new hobby!

    Have an Abus 85/50 I picked up with some tools at an estate sale. Only had one key so I went looking for a spare: Home Depot nor Lowes could reproduce the key because they had no blanks. Maybe Ace can do it. Abus padlocks are not carried locally here by HD or Lowes but plenty on Amazon. The lock does well in this Florida weather. Nevertheless, I never let any of my locks go long without a lube.

    Hello Bill, thank you for your videos and I wish you well in your retirement. The Bus 65/50 was the first "high-security" lock I successfully opened using SPP when I was a wee lad, after watching your excellent video on beating spool pins. I'll never forget the rush of picking it open for the first time. Thanks again for demystifying the Locksport world and making it accessible.

    u am not even sure why i am watching all of these picking videos, NSA probably already thinks i am planning to break into somewhere...
    somehow it is oddly satisfying to see you open one lock after another...
    i have tried it myself with some lock a few years ago, couldn't even open the most basic bikelock from the dollar store...
    guess it looks way easier than it is oO

      +muh1h1 I don't feel any need to pick locks, but I like all kinds of puzzles. I simply enjoy people been passionate about something and doing problem solving. In my country it is even illegal to own lockpicks unless you have a technical security personnel license. However hobbyists still pick locks, because as long as you open your own locks and there is noone to snitch on you to Police you'll be fine.

      It's a useful skill in some circumstances. Where I live everyone owns a bicycle, that sadly also means more bike-thieves. I've had to open my own bike without a key a few weeks ago because someone broke of a screwdriver or something in the lock and the key didn't fit. -_-

      Somewhere around here I've got a lock from Dollar Tree that still has me stumped. I'm tempted to send it to Bill to mill open and see if it's really that secure, or just so poorly made (gritty, poorly fit) that the feedback is all wrong.

    You probably know by now, but I'll clue others in on the "KA501". ABUS has two options for locks. "KA" = Keyed Alike & "KD" = Keyed Different. KA means you can get multiples locks that have the same bitting. KD means you can get multiple locks but with different bitting.
    EX: A set of three KA locks will come with one set of two keys each. All six keys will work with all three locks. The boxes wil all have the same KA501 label so you know they are similar to that key code.
    Three KD locks will also come a set of two keys per lock totalling six keys. Except each set of two keys only works with their respective lock and cylinder. The Box labels will be different codes like KD501, KD502, and KD503. Each lock with their own key code.

    I can usually get padlocks. but I have an older ABUS 55/50 sitting here that's giving me fits. It would probably help if I had more than a half diamond and a bent piece of windshield wiper to work with. The rest of my picks were "borrowed", lol. planed on getting a better set anyway. Thanks at the look inside Bill!

    Thank the bat! I just bought a new lock for my storage unit. I figured I'd dig i a little, find a sub-$50 lock (storage is insured and there's nothing irreplaceable in there). I just bought the aluminum alloy bodied version of this.
    I was under the impression it was shim-resistant but I'm not so sure now. Granted you'd need to make some very thin shims because it's tight.

    hi Bill, yesterday i lost the key off my lock (abus 65/30) so i thought what i could do, so i took my drill with diamant drill head and started drilling the cilinder out, after 30 seconds of drilling i reached a point where i would come to a stop, so the cilinder was out and i gave the top of the lock a smack with a hammer and boom, open.

    Bill question for you. I managed to get 65/45 open in under 30 sec. I nicked 2 locks from my work place and they use the same key. One just looks newer then the other. Old one i am able to pick. its great fall set on pin 1 and bam but the 2nd one i am unable to pick. Think newer one has VF beside the keyway. Same key but different lock any idea? I can post both to you if u wish to compare.
    Cheers

    Hey bill here is some information for you: This Abus is probably from the 90s or beginning of 2000. You can tell that by the black package. The black packages are the ones that are older, the newer packages look different, have a rating on it and are most of the time blue. This could vary for the American market though... not sure as they still maybe use the black ones there. The pins are not new just a longer pin that is used mostly with wider bodies or different models. I do like the counter milling and have not seen that on an Abus before only on Zeiss Ikon locks. Would you mind sending me what is left of the lock? Thanks :)

      bosnianbill
      Tell me which coding system you mean and send me some pictures and I'll ask my locksmith, he may know the answer to that. If not I know some other persons that could know it. The core is perect! I just need the counter milled plug for my research that is all.

    • @Nite0wl
      @Nite0wl 10 років тому +1

      bosnianbill Joining in here rather late but the code "KA501" stamped on the side of the box you showed is the key bitting/pining code. KA is "Keyed Alike", 501 is the blind code for the key (note the "501" stamped on the bow of the key). Depending on which blank is used and which mechanism the lock uses the keying is always noted in the form [keyed alike/different/master] + [bitting code]. I have seen bitting codes as short as three digits (which suggests blind/lookup coding) and as long as seven digits (on a model 88 with a plus cylinder) which was a direct key code.

      bosnianbill I'm getting better at this, so I thought I'd go get it from the basement. Fiddled with it for maybe an hour when I started realizing I had the security pins figured out, and suddenly the thing popped open. A couple more openings before I returned it to the basement, and I'm really happy I got it. Understanding picking security pins opens a world of interesting locks to pick.

Never have seen a lime green handle on one of Bills Picks, so it had to be a 3D printed selfmade one (there is a template on Thingiverse as i remember...and he mentioned it once). I did make myself a nice Princess/Prince Pick Set yesterday (with blue 3D printed handles...love them already) and I would, as you, like Bill to make a video about King/Queen, Rook/Knight (both sets from sparrows) and Prince/Princess (have seen a set from Madbob). They are more a jiggle or rocking type of pick and can work very nice, if they fit into the keyway. Btw the Abus looks very nice, god job Bill (and Abus) :).

    Hey Bill, love the intro/opening on this video. My favorite so far. Do you do these yourself or do you have someone create these for you?
    I'm not up to tackling security pins yet. I'm still at the beginner stage I guess. I would love to have your level or knowledge and skill at picking locks (and even half your toys). I don't have access to many different locks so I bought a 7 pin "rekeyable practice lock" (not a see-through or cutaway) just something you can change the pinning on and and/change the number of pins and put in spools and serrated pins as you improve (comes with the lot of varying pins, springs, etc). It's not ideal but my situation doesn't allow me to get out and "find/buy/get" a variety of locks which of course I'd prefer.
    One thing I learned which I found very interesting. I always used to watch movies and TV shows and you CONSTANTLY see people picking locks with one pick/tool. I always used to laugh and think to myself even with my limited knowledge of picking I KNOW you need a pick AND a tension wrench. You simply CAN'T pick a lock open with ONE tool. So I thought. Then, I did it. The other day I picked a lock (repeatedly) with just a single pick (no tension wrench). I couldn't believe it actually worked. It was one that was very tough to get a tension wrench in and a pick (I didn't have a top of the keyway "Z" type wrench) so I just went at it with the pick and kept pressure on the pick so as to turn the lock while I was raking it. It was probably just luck and maybe only works with raking and wouldn't really work with SPP'ing the lock, I'm not sure. I just thought it was interesting though that it "could", under certain circumstances, be done. Not that anything like that which you see in movies or TV shows is real, but it did make me think.
    Thanks for all the great videos Bill. I've watched a number of other lock picking videos and your videos are by far the most educational, entertaining and the most professional looking. Some people look like they are trying to shoot the video by holding their cell phone in one hand, the lock in another, the picking tools in their teeth, etc, The results are usually horrible. Or, they're just plain boring. They either don't speak or they probably shouldn't speak, and do. Sorry this got to be so long, thanks again and keep up the great work.

    • @CCNproductions1324
      @CCNproductions1324 8 років тому +1

      +jeph4life a false set is when there is a slight turn in the core which normally means you are close to solving it.

    • @steve24822
      @steve24822 8 років тому +3

      Actually a false set is where you set a security pin half way. You think you have set the pin but actually it has been set into a groove in the pin. The way to tell it is a false set is the cylinder will rotate the opposite way when you put additional pressure on the pin.
      This could happen on the first pin to pick so nothing to do with nearly picking the lock.
