  • **UPDATE 3 ** FEB 2018 My radio was still working perfectly until I hit a deer on the way to work. The damage totaled my car so I no longer have my Ford Fiesta. Im very confident that replacing the radio with a used Ford Fiesta OEM radio from a salvage yard was the fix.
    **UPDATE 2** Just wanted to let everyone know as of
    July 29, 2017 my radio is still working perfectly after replacing the radio with one from a salvage yard over a year ago.
    ***UPDATE 1***The problem persisted soon after this video. I found a replacement radio on eBay for $60. eBay user "discountoemradios" has really good deals on factory radios. I even bought the wrong one and they worked with me to return it and sent me the correct one. Hope this helps those having the same issue. stores.ebay.com...
    Original statement: My 2013 ford fiesta had this loud crackling and popping coming from the speakers. It also would pop once and all audio would mute. I seem to have some how fixed the issue.

    Bro I just want to tell you how much I appreciate you and this video. I spent all of 2 days doing everything for subs, new speakers, etc. for this nightmare of a vehicle I have and as soon as it came time to sound test, that crackling noise happened and I about lost my shit. I got a soldering iron and even soldered and shrink tubed everything I know I didnt mess up XD, so I calmed down grabbed a water and saw this, saved myself 700$. Also it does come back from time to time but never as bad, its just that that connector has to have the wires straight and everything taped or tubed to prevent electric current between one another and it should be mint.

    I had the same issue I just bought the radio online for 106 dollars and installed it myself and problem solved. I did end up buying a different model with the satellite radio and it still worked. Whatever you do don’t take it to the dealership fix it yourself it’s too simple to pay somebody else.

      Mine hasnt worked in months. Im interested in your solution. SO you can get a generic radio to fit in behind this radio and when its done it all looks the same as original? I thought Id have to buy a whole new unit from Ford for 700 bucks

    THIS WORKS!!!!!
    My bf's car radio suddenly made an awful popping sound when starting up his 2011 Ford Fiesta, and then the audio stopped working completely. We tried factory reseting the SYNC system, tried the "turn it off then on again" method for his car, phone, bluetooth, and radio. Nothing.
    It seemed to be just loose/dusty wires because we tried this and the radio works just fine now. Thank you so much!!!!

    I have not used my radio in about 2 1/2 years because it was doing exactly what your was doing. I spoke with the ford dealership, who stated there wasn't a recall and I would have to take it in so they could do a diagnostic test which was gonna run me a little over a hundred dollars. I'm definitely going to try this! Thank you!

    My 2013 Focus did this. I was able to get the radio to function (not crap out and pop) by putting a toggle switch on the main power line (the wire is the one to far left on the larger of the 2 connectors when facing radio.) I would switch the power off when leaving the car, then back on when I drove it next time. Apparently the constantly "on" state of the radio takes a toll on something inside the radio. I did this for a while with no issues, then I read that I could use a newer unit from a 2016 so long as only the year code was different (I've heard other combos are compatible also.) It was worth $50 to not have to play with a toggle switch, though I think others might like to know that the radio can be "reset" like this for a short-term fix. The toggle switch is a lot easier than pulling the fuse as some people would do!

    I'm about to try this first. No one listened to my random pops and audio cuts complaints all summer but for two days now my car has just hissed static regardless of me having the key in. Even if the wire thing buys me time to get my paycheck and buy a new stereo, 30 minute drives of full angry static multiple times a day is more than my weak mind can take.
    Thanks, man.

    People with this problem and this is on the Focus too... call FORD and report it... tell them how dangerous it is... loud static while you are driving is startling and not safe.... anyways FORD will have to report the call to the NTSB and then something may be done. The FORD rep told me they have to be called... it doesn't matter about all the complaints on the internet, they need to hear them... blow their phones up!

    • @shelldaniel6412
      @shelldaniel6412 3 роки тому

      Can you tell me what to do and say exactly and what number to call? Did you get anywhere with the dealership? I’m afraid to drive my 2014 Ford focus because of the loud sound and now I can’t use my radio.
      Shouldn’t this be a recall?
      I’m not good at phone calls or fighting large companies.
      Let me know if you made any progress or what you think should be done.
      Thanks!

    Its weird cause that is EXACTLY how i explained what was happening to my radio. It was crazy crackling snd then some popping sounds and theb eventually it finally just died. Havent had radio for like 2 or 3 years. I winder if that would work still since its been dead for awhile. It the summer when it gets hot it will still crackle and pop sometimes but rarely.

    Update: I ended up having to buy a used stereo from a 2015 focus on ebay. Paid $66 total.
    You can reset 2013 focus radio by turning off vehicle take out keys open driver door hit lock doors on stereo panel. (Ford told me)
    When this didnt work...
    I took my radio out (metal box) unscrewed the plate on bottom. Unhooked the CD player ribbon from under the circuit board...pushed it back in ( not sure if this was needed just from other ppl info I got online) when I blew on wire connectors and plugged em all back in it works again. FINALLY!!!

    2/2/19 I have fixed mine!!! (so far) the short in the wiring harness is coming from the control mod itself the wires are too tight coming up into the harness I cut all the electrical tape off as far as I could go BUT what I found is there is a pinch in the wires where they tied it when you left off the control mod off of the car to expose the stereo they have the wires tied at the bottom of the concole cut that off and then cut and remove the tape to those wires then message those wires and straighten them back out DO NOT TIE THEM BACK DOWN let them lie freely....have tested the car for hours on bumpy roads and the heater on high blowing through to top vents (trying to create as much heat as possible up there) and have had NO.....NO...problems at ALL!!!!!

    My car (2013 ford focus) was doing the same thing. I tried to unwrap and rewrap the cables, and that did fix the problem for only 3 days. After the 3 days the radio started making static again and would persist even when the car was turned off. My last hope was to buy a new radio from a scrap yard for $80 and that seemed to fix the problem so far.

      lmvks you can watch my video that basically shows you how to remove the radio main head unit. Once it's out you locate the model numbers on it and get the same exact one from a salvage yard and install it. It shouldn't need any software patches or updates to work. Mine did not.

    100 percent fix. Remove retainer plastic clips on Amp chips inside radio housing. Replace cpu grease. Heat expands clips preventing chips to spread heat to radio chassis. This will fix it this time

    • @christopherheard3588
      @christopherheard3588 Рік тому

      It would be nice to have a description of how you opened up the unit. I had no sound but Rice Krispies and pops. On taking it out and put contact cleaner spray on the connectors - nothing improved on putting the fuse back but I knocked it on the 'head' a bit and it came back to life but in a few minutes the pops and sizzles came back. suppose that there is a loose contact somewhere inside. It gets a lot of hot sun on it here so thermal movement over the years has probably taken it's toll. So now I want to open it up - but where to start? I don't think that the top side is the way to go because of the CD mechanism. Looks like the back side of the unit is the heat sink. During lockdown I successfully did a motherboard chip re-soldering on a MacBook Pro - so I have an idea what you are talking about.

    • @christopherheard3588
      @christopherheard3588 Рік тому

      I have now opened up the unit - four screws on the bottom side and loosen the two black bolts on the back and side - these are the ones that hold the clips for the amplifier chips. A ribbon connector from the circuit board to the CD player unit seems to be OK. The thermal paste was dry - I replenished it. I re-assembled it and put it back. But when I put in the fuse again - no joy - back to square one. Since giving it a good knock seemed to fix it momentarily at one point, maybe there is a cracked solder joint somewhere on the circuit board (this was the problem with the computer - needed an improvised microscope to see what I was doing - a lens from a laser pointer and some sticky stuff [blu tac] on the phone camera, no residue flux and a fine pointed, thermostatically controlled soldering iron). Next weekend I might take the unit out again and see if I can spot a cracked solder joint - perhaps the power amp chips are candidates - the heat sink clamps must put a stain on the solder joints and the solder is most likely lead-free, i.e. brittle. Since this occurred to me now that I have put everything back together, I'll have a cold beer and meditate on it! I took photos of the unit whilst disassembling it, if anyone is interested. If it works out that the cracked solder joint is right then I will document that as well.

    • @christopherheard3588
      @christopherheard3588 Рік тому

      Had another go and it seems like it is fixed. Took out the radio/CD unit - opened it up from the bottom and disconnected the ribbon cable on the CD subunit end to get the circuit board out so that I could visually check the solder joints on the amp chips. Apparently there were no dry or cracked solder joints. Put a drop of contact cleaner on the ribbon cable end. There is another copper coloured small ribbon cable in the CD subunit which I also disconnected and put a drop of contact cleaner (not sprayed - could contaminate the CD player optics). In both cases there are little brown sliders on each side to release the ribbon cable. My reasoning with respect to the ribbon cable, is that there is quite a bit of movement over time since the CD subunit has its own suspension system. I did have a good look at the ribbon cable which has several factory applied folds in it, but I didn't see any obvious cracks in it. The other point is the the CD subunit is always on because it will accept a CD or eject one even if the car is off and the keys out of the ignition. Thus a faulty connection to the CD subunit could potentially cause these sounds even if everything is nominally switched off. Put everything back together and put the fuse back in - no pops and crackles. I haven't been out for a drive yet but hopefully it will work well for a while. Later I will probably take the car out and have to leave it in the tender hands of valet parking in a grotty city centre car park - then I will see if the matter is fixed!

    • @stevesmith9932
      @stevesmith9932 9 місяців тому

      I also bet whe you replaced the components back you made a better connection from the amp chip to the frame. Those sounds are from a bad amp. Removing the amp chip plasitic retainer -which has expanded from heat= closes the gap and adding theral paste like for cpu's will transfer heat to the frame. I havn't been online and couldnt find you post, (but now i know how to find my comments i made!) is why it took so long to respond. If this happens again you know what is is.. I didnt post removal of unit because there are a couple good easy to find ones on youtube. Keep ROCKIN' Dude!

      Agreed. Stereos worked better in the 80's. Meanwhile three and a half decades later, my sound system poops out after five years? BS. That should be the last thing to go out on a vehicle. I've never had so many problems with one car in my entire life. I had to have a complete transmission replacement after five days off the lot. Not to mention the electrical issues and all the weird water leaks through-out the chassis. Can't wait to see whats next! Im tired of this garbage.

    So I'm having this same problem....it's very startling when your driving and a loud pop comes through the speaker. I called ford to have the problem fixed which luckily I have a warranty...it's just getting the car in there and them keeping it for a week while I have no other means of transportation that sucks cause I work. These damn cars have so many problems there's also a recall on the transmission which there is a lawsuit against ford going on. If that lawsuit goes through I will be getting either a replacement car, down payment on a new one or cash....ford has even called me to offer purchasing my vehicle back...so o recommend checking with Ford if your car is on the recall list....

    • @basham50
      @basham50  6 років тому

      I received a letter about the transmission lawsuit. I didnt fall into any of the listed categories. I had a couple transmission related issues fixed before my warranty ran out. I read that they extended the transmission warranty to 110XXX miles or something like that but my 2013 already has 140XXX miles on it. I fixed my radio issue for $50 bucks. Even if I still had a warranty $50 is worth not having to deal with my ford dealership. But for anyone else I would always recommend checking into recalls especially if the car is still under warranty.

    I have the exact same problem. Why don't Ford have a recall on this? I've been buying Ford vehicles. For years. Been a loyal customer. Where's Ford's loyalty? So many people have this same issue. I will not buy another Ford ever after this. They screwed up. Instead of making it right. They want more money. I guess in the end. This will cost them, they have lost a lot of customers. Over this.

      There was a recall for the TCM and PCM modules that tell the transmission when to shift gears etc. My car was in the dealership for over a year. (Ford Focus 2012) After fighting with them to replace both of those via the warranty, some amazing way my wiring harnest was broken. I was out of 3 grand vs the original 10k they were trying to charge. I am now having the radio issue. Just paid it off and hope to trade it in for a real car and not a practice toy.

      Welcome to almost every Ford dealership service center in the USA. Also their cars are crap these days. I feel really bad for retired Ford engineers who actually designed quality vehicles in their day and are now stuck with junkers like a Fiesta or Focus with bad transmissions and comments like these. Ford needs to step up their engineering department. Until then I'm not buying any more Ford cars.

    I'm doing this right now actually, and I can't physically get my radio out? It feels like it's stuck. Way more complicated than just pulling it out, to me at least!

    • @basham50
      @basham50  7 років тому

      I have found that some factory radios for whatever reason can be a little difficult to pull loose. It could be something as simple as a deformed clip or other plastic defects from the factory. You might even get a flash light and check each side of the radio. There should be a white nub on each side of the radio that are used to guide the unit into place. They stick out on each side. Those can cause it to hang up as well. Once you have all the bolts out, I would wiggle, gently twist, push and pull the unit until it is free.

    But what made it go bad in the first place?
    After some searching around this seems to be a consistent issue with this model of vehicle; so were the stock radios just low quality? Will replacing it only be a short-term fix and something similar will happen later on because of some other problem? or is this actually saving the $500 that ford wants to charge to fix it?

    • @basham50
      @basham50  7 років тому

      Dion Harris that's odd. When you say you replaced it with an aftermarket radio do you mean you replaced the old factory radio with an actual Ford radio or you installed an aftermarket radio like a Sony,JVC, Polk, Clarion style ? If the radio won't turn off on its own when you turn the car off it sounds like it's wired up incorrectly.

    • @basham50
      @basham50  7 років тому +1

      Also if you replaced it with a Ford radio from a salvage yard you have to make absolutely sure you replaced it with the exact model that your car came with. I tried to get by with buying one that was off a couple digits on the model number and it wouldn't work. It would plug up to the wiring harness but it wouldn't even power on.

      Amanda Eubanks I replaced the main head unit. It houses the CD player and other stereo components. I put the name of a eBay seller in my description. I don't know if that seller is still in business. Car-part.com is a website where you can search for parts at local salvage yards. I wrote down the model numbers off my head unit "metal cd player box" and replaced it with that exact model. It's been over a year and my radio works fine. I just plugged the replacement in and it worked just like it should.

    The Ford Fiesta I drive is a 2011 model and the battery died. When I jump started the car, the only electrical button that illuminates is the 'Menu' button. The aux, radio, CD no longer illuminate and no longer work. Does anyone have a solution for this? I'd take it to an official Ford Garage, but I know they'll charge a ridiculous price for something that's possibly very easy to fix.

    • @basham50
      @basham50  6 років тому

      my fiesta did some weird stuff when I would jump it. It seems the fiesta has a sensitive electrical system. I took it to the dealership which I never do but I thought at least they could diagnose the problem for me and then id choose to fix it or not. The transmission wasnt shifting right and they had replaced some control module in it once before and ford covered the cost. It ended up being a bad batter or so they said. But after the new battery I never had anymore trouble with the transmission or weird electrical issues.
