I think you should watch Pather Panchali, Seven Samurai, Vertigo, Singing in the Rain, Aparajito, Rashomon - all these.
      However your list isn't bad.

Who are we missing: Strangers on a Train, Rashomon, Umberto D, Wild Strawberries, Kiss Me Deadly, Aparajito, Rio Bravo, which are among my favourites personally. Others that I was shocked to see not make the list include The Seventh Seal, A Streetcar Named Desire, and From Here to Eternity.

  • @chrissycee90

Quite disappointed A Streetcar Named Desire isn't in there, easily one of the best five of the decade!

  • @ankitbhattacharjee_iitkgp

This is the only list including Pather Panchali. Actually, people don't include it as they don't know it. It's one of the most precious gems in cinema, but it's hidden (underrated). I'm glad that you've watched it.
The other two movies of the Apu trilogy too, are incredible

Just great and thank you so much for this list. I have still to discover films of this era; I thought I had seen already some of the best, but still there are treasures to discover. Missing Charly Chaplin's genious films.
However, there is a subjective part in the choice of films and the background knowledge which make us to appreciate a film and the emotions procured to each person is so different.

  • @tommytruth7595

They made some great movies in the 50's because Hollywood realized it had to compete with television. And "Giant" should be a lot closer to number one than it is on that list.

  • @antoniosergiocunha

There are some omissions. Ingmar Bergman appeared only once: Smiles of a summer night. What about The seventh seal (1957), Wild strawberries (1958), The virgin spring (1959)? Both The seventh seal and Wils strawberries are superior to Smiles of a summer night. A streetcar named desire was not in the list. Why? A place in the sun was not in the list either.

I started out thinking this list had potential. Then things started to break down. Then I saw Creature from the Black Lagoon included and Forbidden Planet not included. Also, there is obviously room for many opinions but leaving out Rashomon is just a sin.

Ivanhoe didnot deserve to be in the list. Liz Taylor looked the most beautiful in her entire career n it was a classic glamorous movie with supporting caste of Eva Gabour n the gorgeous youmg Roger Moore who looked as beautiful as Liz. Based on F
Scott Fitzerlands life the only sore point was an outdated over the hill funny looking hero Van Johnson
Uv left our Quo Vadis n Streetcar named Desire far better than most im yr list

To Catch A Thief, High Society, The Pride And The Passion, Twelve O'clock High, The Young Philadelphians, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, And God Created Woman, The King And I, The Three Faces Of Eve, Witness For The Prosecution, The Vikings, = not one of these made the list.
Vertigo is not even Hitchcock's best movie of the decade. East Of Eden to be ranked above Some Like It Hot is a joke.

  • @somewhere6

I appreciate your inclusion of several of the many great Japanese movies of the time but I think you ignored a number of the best of them such as Rashomon. Also unfortunate is the chronic overrating of Vertigo.

I wrote that I few years ago, and deeply regret it to be honest. I guess I was disappointed that certain movies like 12 Angry Men and On the Waterfront were lower on the list, but after watching the movies that were ranked higher than them, like the incredible Tokyo Story, I regret saying that this list sucks, cause that’s not true at all, in fact, it’s the polar opposite, it’s a fantastic ranking for these excellent movies.
