  • In this video I share my experiences with building your own talkbox.
I show two different possibilities for building a Talkbox and demo them both.
Both can be built rather cheaply and are very effective.
The Horn Speaker Talkbox I show and demonstate in this video has been used in one of my session recordings with great success.
So I hope you find this video inspiring and informative.
    All the best,
    Paul.

Paul, mate. You've really done it, man.
You're bloody champ! You've just changed my life in under 4 minutes, what a legend of the bush.

Came looking to see if my old outdoor metal speakers (yes, I have a pair!) might do the trick, and I'm glad I stayed to the end!
I made a talk box in the seventies using a horn speaker, and an old cassette recorder as the amp, and managed to squeeze it into a slope fronted box. Wish I had a picture of it

Nice! The issue of the diaphragm being preferably phenolic never occurred to me. But it makes perfect sense. There are some very old phenolic drivers here in my workshop and it seems to me that I'm going to dedicate myself to experimenting. Thanks for the tip, Paul!

The lead from the talk box is plugged into the speaker output from the amp.
The talk box takes place of the speaker.
On a combo amp you may need to do some DIY to disconnect the speaker and connect the talk box.
    Thanks for your interest.

I used an old stadium speaker driver with NO DECONSTRUCTION. Available all over internet!

Horn speaker drivers generally do have a throat coming off them once you take them apart.

Yes. Always try to match the driver impedance to the amps output impedance.
But with solid state amps you can use a higher impedance driver like 16 ohm with an amp with 8 ohm output.

you should add a capacitor to block the bass frequencies to the tweeter.

I've been using a tweeter driver with a PVC adapter and a hose barb on top for years. The driver is a 400W, 8 ohm TWD60X tweeter from Pyramid Car Audio. I power it with a Crate Powerblock guitar amp (though I use it with a keyboard instead of a guitar.) I haven't experimented with other driver brands yet but I'm curious what JBL or Peavey drivers would sound like.

Thanks so much Paul for all your leg work. I found an old 10w horn speaker with a phenolic diaphragm and followed your instructions to produce a totally functional talk box. I'm driving it with an old 15w solid state Fender amp and it sounds great!...plenty of volume pumping through the tube. Any advice on the best length of tube to use? My guess is the shorter the better. Thanks again.

Hi Paul - I have a blackstar stage 60 with an emulated output on the back (standard jack to jack output) - What would be the easiest and best way to get this signal to a diy talkbox thus eliminating the need to stray in any way from my existing setup live?

  • @PaulGrahamGuitarst
    @PaulGrahamGuitarst  10 років тому +1

Paolo Jiz de Ortega I would plug it in the cabinet output.

    • @luigikoopa8771

Connect the guitar to the amp, then disconnect the speaker from the amp and plug the talk box there.

My amp has a Line out/ effects Send and a return loop and it also has a Cabinet output.. where would i plug this sucker in? it says to use a 8 ohm-16 ohm cab.. so im guessing an 8ohm Driver will suffice?

  • @PaulGrahamGuitarst

I am not sure what brand it was but it was a old metal horn speaker from a home alarm system.

I saw this video years ago and ever since I've tried to open every horn speaker I could get my hands on. Which is not many. They're not easy to come by without buying one new. But I found these flat things. Not like that. They're just like, a flat cylinder. Could anyone give me a little more? Like what to look for on the outside? Thanks.

The part you are looking for is called a Compression Driver. I haven't made one myself, try to find a Ademco 713 for the Compression Driver from that.

@@iaincowell9747 Well, okay. Thanks for the reply but the few I've opened looked just like that. But I'll try to keep my eyes opened for that brand.

With the horn speaker how would you go about connecting the on/off switch.

    • @PaulGrahamGuitarst
      @PaulGrahamGuitarst  7 років тому +1

      There are two ways.
The first is to have a separate amp for the talkbox and use a A/B switcher between the amps and the guitar.
The second which can be a bit risky (and I do not recommend) is to use one amp and use a A/B switch between the speaker cab and the talkbox. There are to many problems and risks that come with this method.
