- President Trump says he wants to strip funding from so-called "sanctuary cities," but what exactly do these cities do?

The map at 4:26 comes from the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (www.ilrc.org/l...)
Cities and counties that limit their cooperation with federal immigration agents are sometimes called "sanctuaries," but the word doesn't actually have any legal meaning. However, because the constitution prohibits the federal government from making states enforce its laws, cities, counties, and other local jurisdictions have lots of freedom to ignore, or comply with, requests from federal agencies like ICE to detain undocumented immigrants for deportation.

I like how people think Chicago is the only violent place in the US. It really isn't the only city with Violence, not to mention that LA back in the 90's was way violent than today's Chicago. LA was able to turn much of it around, I think Chicago too can do the same.

The problem is alot of people in Chicago are poor. Poverty breeds crime, instead of helping these people find jobs, have better community police relations, and have safer neighborhoods it's much easier to label them criminals. No one cares about criminals.

the police shouldn't need to choose between doing their jobs or getting funding. They should be putting public safety as top priority, so they should be recieving a stable funding to do it.
@Coelophysis true but it's not like america has the resources to deport every single illegal immigrant who's also a criminal back, another thing is the left would never stand for it and there would be public backlash against the administration if they did push ice to attempt this, and w all this impeachment bs, nothings gonna get done

it's the (unducumented) immigrants problem that's their fault tbh, they came to the USA with no papers. 😕
匿名の人 Anonymous Person
It can vary on a case by case basis. some illegal immigrants oder indeed come in without papers, possibly because they can't aquire those papers or those papers were lost when or before they decided to immigrate. other times you have cases of people who lost their papers after immigrating, and of course mistakes about who is and isn't illegal in a massive and overworked program. honestly I'd say what needs to happen is for more legal ways for illegal immigrants to become legal citizens. it would help thin out the herd and make it easier to identify potentially dangerous individuals. possibly. IDK I'm not an immigration expert. point being theirs easier and more beneficial ways to go about it then fighting tooth and nail, and shock upon shock you can maintain security as long as your careful.

Actually a very well put together piece that doesn't seek to say which is the right way but just to explain the system and the advantages/disadvantages of both sides. Good Job Vox

Mikey Thus far about 10:1. Not too bad, all things considered.
I agree with the vox's position on this issue, but to say it doesn't seek to say which way is right is naive. They describe the problems that can occur if the detainer request is honoured, and then explain how trump's policy is making these requests more difficult to honour. How you could view this as a neutral argument is beyond me.
It's clearly pro-sanctuary cities. The nice thing about this piece though is that they establish the facts first before they throw their opinion into the mix.
omminnoremac I think you mean that Trump is making it harder to refuse the requests, which is a good argument against sanctuary cities as local police might lose funding.

@2:42 : "Word gets around the IMMIGRANT community that anytime you interact with the local police it could mean deportation". I think you are mixing illegal immigrants with legal ones by using the word IMMIGRANT. If you are legally in this country then there is nothing to fear.
That’s not actually true. Many illegal immigrants are legal based on the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, it says if they rightfully fear the police of a country (for example, if they fear family separation) they can legally reside in it as undocumented migrants.
@@the8thgemmer467 I don't get it. One can enter any country illegally and then be a legal immigrant? Then why do we have immigration and borders?
@@champaksingh210 no, but if, for example, they fear that the police will send them back to their country even if it’s extremely dangerous, or the police will separate them from their families, then in that situation they are allowed to stay (If I remember correctly).

God bless President Trump.
If you don't pay taxes why would you get coverage of any service
But illegal immigrants do pay taxes. The IRS gives a number to illegal immigrants as a replacement for their SSN that allows them to pay income tax, and they do. Besides, they still pay sales tax, payroll tax (if they are legally hired), and others, despite the fact that they don't get social security and other benefits from them.

What you are missing is then ban was on DISCRETIONARY funding only. Not regular funding. The rest was greatly explained.
This is why States Rights are important. People often think "States Rights" is just a code name for racism or homophobia, but that's just simply not true. If it weren't for the "State Right" to for states to not have to enforce federal law, sanctuary cities like these would be impossible. States Rights aren't just people saying "I want to do what ever bigoted thing I want to without the federal government interfering. It's a legitimate protection against a possible tyranny of the federal government.
To bad States Rights are most invoked by people who want to do nefarious things without impediment. Historically it was the Federal Government that protected minorities against discriminatory state laws (Native americans possibly the exception).
