Is RED Or BLU the Better Team?

- TF2 is well known for its symmetrical gameplay, leading to neutral footing between RED and BLU. But is it possible that one team might have an advantage over the other? What are some of the ways that each team has advantages or disadvantages?
what i expected: deep lore analysis to show a specific team is better
what i got: explanation of how the rock on a few maps makes it 1% easier for a soldier to peek around it and shoot rockets, therefore making that team better
Red is the OP team cos of the Meet the Team videos duh
that's RED propaganda. Don't believe Redmond's lies
yeah red is like the default team
That's just cause the director didn't interview the BLU team before they unceremoniously killed him.
@@TheTdw2000also expiration date, and red is on the cover of the game
I've taken to calling these different symmetries "mirrored" and "rotational." Mirrored maps are Lakeside and Viaduct, whereas rotational maps are Process and Gullywash. The reason is because when mirroring these maps in Hammer, you can either reflect the map or rotate it 180 degrees.
one of the most interesting mirrored maps I've seen are brazil and croissant which put both bases adjacent to each other
Man, everytime I watch your videos I get so interested in what the background footage is that I completely miss everything you say and forget what video im even watching
I would really watch more of your vids if you showed what you were talking about, at least with a picture. I dont know that much about viaduct layout to get what you're saying.
most maps be like
A B
C D
' - ,
D C
B A
(rotational symmetry) if you drew half the map, the other half is the same thing, rotated around mid
product and lakeside be like
A B
C D
: -
C D
A B
(reflectional symmetry / mirrored) if you drew half the map, the other half is the same thing, but folded around mid
some visuals would be helpful tho
on snakewater, it’s slightly harder to spot red stickies hidden in/behind the lanterns near catwalk and in africa than it is to spot blu stickies in those same spots
woah, careful posting this, this is a pretty controversial topic that can get you in hot water fast
if you're worried about what side your rockets are coming from you can make a bind to switch between left-handed and right-handed viewmodels. left-handed viewmodels actually make the rocket come from the left side
im 99% sure you can't switch without disconnecting and reconnecting to the server, same with changing interp
in that case you switch your handedness beforehand based on which team you're on lmfao
it can be done in a not-super-cheaty way by starting and stopping a demo, which lets you switch. however, starting and stopping demos is a banned tech because it temporarily reveals spies for a frame. so i don't think it'd be legal to use in comp. would be cool if valve added the swap hands feature that CS2 has
@@turmspitzewerk it was a function in csgo so its probably doable to add it to tf2 right? and the dragon's fury need to be adjusted too because its still havent got a left side projectile
can you link the spreadsheet of team win stats you mentioned? i'd like to see it myself.
On attack and defend and payload it feels like this
BLU feels more satisfying to win with
RED feels easy to win with
Personality I prefer BLU
I remember on an ANCIENT podcast, them commenting that one of the earlier versions of product was imbalanced in HL because heavy could easily see and shoot over the sign on one team, but needed to move against the rock in a particular way to do it on the other team.
On harvest blue is better haha
as scout on harvest you should be running either the winger or atomizer anyways
Nah red is better bc it's easier to solly rollout of the right spawn door without bonking your head
fact; fans of the color blue are better at the video game than people who like red
doesn’t flipping viewmodels flip the rocket spawn position?
0:19 uncanny how easy it is
loch-n-load is a truly beautiful weapon
I read a study recently regarding this same thing in Olympic boxing, where apparently who wears red and who wears blue is decided by a coin toss (or similar 50/50 method). The study observed that red had a statistically significant higher win rate, I forget what the exact percent was, but probably something like 52-55%. The study proposed that because most societies associate the color red with aggression, the boxer wearing red subconsciously boxed more aggressively and therefore won the most.
Whether aggression like that is beneficial in TF2, or if the study came to the correct conclusion at all, is up for debate. However, I will say that running the numbers on current logs isn’t necessarily a good indicator. Because, for example, if froyo just happened to prefer blue team, they could skew the statistics. Or even they didn’t single handedly skew them, other people could see their preference and try to mimic them, or maybe b4nny or habib says X team is the best and people take it as gospel. The study just happened to work in Olympic boxing because of the decision to assign player colors based on the coin toss.
Yknow what the WORST part is?
In the Payload maps
The RED team, yknow, the one centered around EXCAVATION AND DEMOLITION
is the one DEFENDING
While the BLU team, centered around BUILDING
is the one ATTACKING
This has to be the dumbest design choice in TF2
At 6:25 that’s so funny seeing “you have so much health” in the chat after NOT looking at him (so cold)
Do you have the link to that study of logs over time? Can't seem to find it anywhere.

@@Wild_Rumpus my goat strikes again 🙏
Global Radio Network is the best.
i think red is better because they are sexier
TLDR: Red is soooooooo good trust
all 6s maps exhibit symmetry. it’s just that in most such maps, the symmetry is the non-identity element of the cyclic group C_2. but in product, the symmetry is the reflection in the dihedral group D_2.
edit: wasn’t thinking before, fixed what i was actually trying to say. 😅
Wrong.
IIRC there was a study of dota 2 matches thar showed red team had a 1% lead over blue team, even though they're otherwise completely identical. its theorized that the colors red and blue have different psychological effects that change how their players play, with the color red being associated with agression and blue with calmness or passiveness. this pattern runs true in other symmetrical games like halo too, though sometimes its the other way around with blue taking the lead.
Is that 1% lead statistically significant? Seems like it would just be a result of random chance and chaotic behavior rather than a real psychological effect.
i like to watch your videos while playing terraria. i dont play teamfortress but i like your voice
I remember there being a study about the psychology of color in games and it found that, I think it was in LoL, that the blue team slightly edged out the red team in terms of win percentage.
Though in LoL's case I think the player is _always_ the blue team?... So I think they picked the wrong game for the study...
never played comp, don't even know where I'd start. still love all your vids, keep it up and i'll keep watching
LIES! Red is OBVIOUSLY the best team /s
4:17 The fact that he could've survived if he just moved forward and to the left is crazy to me
In causal, all the good teams happen to be the opposing side.😂
i havent watch yet but as a 6s scout, i prefer to play blu as i find red players are easier to spot and aim at for me. prolly placebo but it just felt that way
red cause it fits my loadouts better :]
There's also handedness. I'm a righty, so I tend to leave spawn on the right door.
We have officially run out of ideas.
Blu is better
