Considering how Sonic sounds so constipated in the game, yeah I'm not surprised.
I'm ngl Roger Craig Smith made Sonic sound much more mature in frontiers
This makes sense from a timeline perspective
Ryan had a cocky and impulsive sonic (young teen)
Jason had a calmer and more focused sonic (older teen)
And this version of Roger is seems wiser and even calmer than before (adult)
Ik he doesn’t age much for real but his personality has certainly evolved over time while still keeping that “I’m just a guy who love’s adventure” as his baseline
Also makes sonic sound like he getting older
@@xudokaiYoung teen: Spiny Spikehair
Older teen: Sonic
Adult: Ogilvie
Something similar with Baldy Nosehair (Eggman [Robotnik])
@@LordfarquaadISdaddy I'll pick Ogilvie Maurice over Spiny Spikehair.
Ryan Drummond is basically the usual cocky and childish Sonic, but mature when he needs to be.
Jason Griffith is already a more mature and focused Sonic, but still having the usual cockyness and philosophies.
Roger Craig Smith is a Sonic who took a step back, but then had his redemption arc becoming even more mature.
Deven Mack is the redemption arc. He captures a Sonic more cocky than ever, who thinks he is undefeatable and that his choices will have no consequences at all. Then in Season 2, he's finally having his redemption arc.
I am Japanese, but I have studied English for many years. When I was younger, I would read the Archie Sonic comics, and later, the IDW ones. I can confidently say that this deeper Roger Craig Smith voice is exactly what I imagined him sounding like in my head while reading Ian Flynn's comics in English. I applaud the voice direction.
Cool cool 😁 hey there's something I've been wondering what was the hardest thing from transitioning from Japanese to English as a language?

Now that I heard him go deeper into his voice I feel like he can also add enthusiasm to it just a lil
He probably tried to add enthusiasm but the director didn't want that
With the serious tone of the game I doubt the director wanted that
That would basically be his performance as mirage from apex

@@meric12131415 I just always thought Mirages voice from Apex Legends (which is also Roger Craig Smith) sounded pretty similar to his sonic but deeper. Personally, I love the different voice direction in Frontiers. Makes Sonic feel like a long-time hero. Imo, i feel like the direction makes the most sense with how deep Roger’s Sonic voice is.
Considering Frontiers appears to have written the main cast as more experienced long-time heroes, it fits. I think the writers were trying to go for a more mature Sonic, in contrast to the teen-like, bold, Sonic with an attitude. All of them have been through much at this point, as the writers are finally acknowledging the events of past mainline games, and the writing and voices seem to reflect that well.

A canonical explanation that I think Sonic’s voice is different in this game is that Sonic just…grew up

@@garrettantle3434 “Don’t try it, Baldy McNosehair.”
the voice makes sonic actually sound like he's growing as a character. like he just knows the drill by now, friends get captured, eggman behind it, sonic comes in, the day is saved. even in the game, sonic didn't really care about the kocos, he just wants to save the day already.
Honestly really leads to the idea that Sonic is a little bit older and a little bit more mature, it's a serious moment so he's not as happy so his voice wouldn't be as uppity and giddy as it usually is
Now he's just Kyle Crane in the Sonic universe

"but that's too cartoony sounding! You can't possibly expect people to take you seriously if you sound like THAT!"
jason griffith will always be my favorite
@@DemonDethchase Sonic's Japanese voice is actually less serious than Jason. Sonic has always been a cartoon character.
Exactly. A voice actor should bring life to a character and make them sound exactly how you would expect them to sound. Roger is literally just doing his original voice with a higher pitch and we’re calling that sonic now I guess.
He’s done other good shit but his voice is just not sonic.
You're wrong. Jun'ichi Kanemaru is and always will be the best voice actor for Sonic. He does understand and knows how to give voice to a character as iconic as Sonic. Jason Griffith only did well in Sonic Unleashed.
When his voice sound deep it makes him sound mature
Someone give that guy a raise
I like the change honestly, while Sonic characters never canonically age, he sounds like a more experienced Sonic, one who's been doing this for years
It felt like Ryan and Jason had mature older voices for Sonic and it felt right with the grown up character designs. Then they have Roger sound like an adult, but act like a kid. It just never felt right so I'm glad for the change
I didn’t even notice how different the voice change was until I went back to Sonic Colors and Forces and I’ve gotta say if Roger sticks around as Sonic they’d better keep that voice he sounds way cooler now
What I like is all the moments where he slips back into that old Sonic voice when he’s excited. It reminds me of myself I have a much deeper normal voice but when I’m into a conversation my pitch raises drastically without me realizing it
I like it I think he’s in a really serious situation and he got way more serious and you can tell at different cut scenes how he gets more high pitched when he’s joking around
Ngl the voice got back to its original state near the end. with just better written lines and it sounded completely fine.
Yall remember that animation that had Sonic using Dying Light lines to see what a more mature Sonic would sound like? I remember everyone in that comments section really wanted to hear that direction for him. Im glad they went with that.
Can I have a link to that pls?
I like to the think the deeper voice shows how Slnic as a character has grown over the years and shows hows hes matured.
Gotta love the transition from
“It’s over, Egghead!”

*“It’s over, Egghead.”*
As a fan of dying light i liked the direction Rodger went for frontiers as i like the idea of a serious sonic. If only he kept it up for the whole game.
…What does Dying Light have to do with Rogers?
Wait shut up, did he voice someone in that game!?
The main character in dying light (Kyle Crane) is voiced by Rodger Craig Smith, sonic is also voiced by Rodger Craig Smith, so technically dying light is just serious sweary sonic
There’s even three Sonic fan animated shorts that use Crane’s voice lines with a dark blue colored Sonic. Very good use of those lines honestly ^^
@@futabafanclub865MY GUY HE VOICES THE MAIN CHARACTER!
They honestly are great little animations. I do watch them from time to time.
Roger is the best Sonic voice and the serious tone in frontiers solidified it
I like the deeper voice it makes sonic sound more mature Like he’s actually grown older
I still feel like having Roger lower his voice for Sonic is a great change. Admittedly, yes it is too deep at times but, to me at least, that’s only after the second half of Kronos during a play-through. I genuinely believe that if Roger did not use that deeper register for Sonics’ voice in most of the beginning parts of the game, it would be a nice evolution to how Sonic sounds. I say this as someone who grew up watching the Sonic Boom T.V show because I think it’s one of Rogers best takes on Sonic.
Oh same here, I grew up watching sonic boom tv because Roger's voice of sonic seems better if it should be in the games in general until giving him source material since wreck it Ralph movies
I hope the voice direction for this game still gets continued use for future sonic games
the last one he did made him sound tired like he just got up after a nap
I’ve wanted this for so long I will always miss Jason and Ryan (when I was a kid it was a seamless transition for me I just said he got older )but this new take on rogers sonic is nice
I actually love the change.
still not a fan of how deep and nasally Roger sounds personally. Jason will forever be the 🐐
There that's the spot!
RCS: My regular voice!?!
That’s the same question I’ve been thinking about since Sonic Frontiers came out in November
I love Shonen Sonic, so the voice direction and writing from Frontiers is great. Would still prefer a different voice actor though, as much as I love Roger normally, since I'd prefer someone with a higher timbre. So Jason and Ryan. Like, Prime Sonic has the right timbre, if you get past the mischaracterization necessary for the plot. If I could pick a new (and relatively cheap) VA, I'd go for Daniel Amerman.
Fun fact though, the Japanese cast is basically flipped from what we know Sonic and Knuckles. To us, Sonic has the youthful timbre while Knuckles is the deep one. In Japanese, those are reversed with Knuckles being the higher pitched one and Sonic the deep one.
For me I'll go with max mittelman at this point after the most important for sonic's character be able to be cool, fun, less energetic and mature serious would be quite of simple which is obvious for the voice fits just like Ryan and Jason had
@@bryanblueblurhedgehog8899 I agree with you on that. Max Mittelman has been at the top of my list who I would want voicing Sonic for the games. He's got a pretty big range of emotions that would be suitable for Sonic.
My favorite blue hedgehog has grown up I am so proud of him!
His voice had that more calm and relaxed tone, similar to Jason Griffith. I always liked how his Sonic wasn't in your face. "Long time no see."
This change was so needed and appreciated. It was impossible for any moment to feel serious with the previous way he delivered lines. It's still no Ryan Drummond, but it's a step in the right direction
If forces had different dialogue and Roger's deeper voice it automatically would've been better
this is what they did with Jason between 06 to Black Knight.
Sonic is maturing he has come along way
It actually made sense. The enemies in this game were actually serious
Sonic's voice in Frontiers was my favorite i would say.
RCS has always been a top tier voice actor. He's been Ezio, Sean, Batman, he has so much range. When he came to Sonic, I never really enjoyed his voice because I was so used to Ryan and Jason, but I accepted it as time went on. Now, his new tone makes me excited for Sonic's slight maturity increase I feel RGS finally stands on a level as great as his previous successors.
I like his deeper voice because it indicates that he’s grown up and ready to take things seriously
Honestly, i love his deeper voice. It shows how he's still got his serious side.
I prefer Jason Griffith
I’ve been convinced for years that Roger always had the potential to be the best Sonic ever since Sonic Boom and I’m glad he finally got the chance to prove me right.
I like it specially because for me it seems like sonic finally hit puppetry and is growing up. Kinda fits the feeling of change and of growing up that most characters seem to experience
I love hearing sonic finally sound like hes grown up
Honestly don’t like the Deeper voice. It doesn’t sound “mature” it just sounds unnatural and out of character.

I that story going more serious again, but I am not a fan of them making Sonic voice deeper, I think him still having a high voice can still work for a story since it worked fine in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic and the black knight. Though I was never fan of Roger as modern Sonic anyway. I loved him as Boom Sonic, I think his style of Sonic works a lot better with Boom Sonic. I wish they had brought Sonic Boom back to have a 4th Sonic series running alongside Movie, Modern and Classic Sonic
Also, Sonic having a deeper voice after sticking with a high pitch voice for so long is jarring and unnatural.
I didn't like the idea that his voice is deeper when it's serious since Ryan and Jason never had their voices changed that drastically.
@@nerodoesart5886 Ryan and Jason's voices worked well for both being lighthearded and serious when the situation called for it. Perhaps if Sega got a new voice director, Roger's Sonic would sound better and more fitting. I personally think the deeper voice in Frontiers was jarring too. For the game, it was fine and fits well. But for long-time fans, it just feels unnatural for Sonic's voice.
@RoseCadenza I think that's just how Roger sounds, and he is a good actor, but his voice isn't flexible. No matter the voice direction and writing... It's not gonna make him sound better and more fitting. I tried to give him one more chance with Frontiers and he just doesn't work. He reminds me of Chris Redfield in Frontiers.
When doing the regular Sonic voice, he sounds like he's straining his voice until this new voice direction, where he sounds like his normal voice or Chris Redfield.
@@nerodoesart5886 That makes sense about Roger not fitting Sonic's voice. I agree with that, and it doesn't sound natural. And I agree that he's a good voice actor. I've heard him in other things he's voiced in (without even recognizing that it's him), and he always does an amazing job.
