During the development of the 1860 Army revolver, Colt did consider mechanical options other than simply scaling up the 1851 Navy pattern. One of these, as evidenced by this Colt prototype, was an enlarged version of the 1855 Pocket, aka Root, revolver. That 1855 design used a solid frame and had been the basis for Colt’s revolving rifles and shotguns, and so it would be natural to consider it for use in a .44-caliber Army revolver. How extensive the experimentation was is not known, and I believe this is the only known surviving prototype of a Dragoon-size 1855 pistol. It survives in excellent shape, and is a really neat glimpse at what might have been…

How no one has made a replica of this thing is ridiculous. Its absolutely gorgeous
YESSS!!!!
Right? I would love one of these!
Oh, how cool! I may just place a bid on thi- HOLY FUCKING SCROOGE MCDUCK!!!
InvaderVin 10/10
too bad they never put this into production, it looks like a beautiful gun
The Dragoon had the problem with cylinder ruptures. That cylinder on a standard Dragoon would have solved that problem.
Yes.
Such a gorgeous and rare gun. This gun will be the envy of all in the auction.
Let's petition Uberti, Pedrasoli and Pietta to make some of them sweethearts. I love black powder, I'd buy one.
If I could afford it when it comes out, I would buy one too.
@Jimm Crowe
Sadly they won't. I have repeatedly written Pietta/ Uberti/ Pedersoli to no avail. They are jerks and are not interested. Will take these ideas to other manufacturing areas such as Turkey, Philippines etc.
It certainly looks cool
I have been researching this and its not that difficult to have a gun made custom and the more people, the cheaper.
@@MrHrKaidoOjamaaVKJV I contacted a company I used to work for based out of England with plants all over the world, usa too and they have all the machinery to make it, have to invest in the rifling machines. I have worked in the steel industry a good part of my life. I want the cylinder engraving done through crown cork and seal (worked for them)if you do your research you will see why.
So when is Uberti adding this model to their line of reproductions?
EXACTLY, And the side hammer 10 gauge revolving shotgun.
Sadly Uberti did not even give the courtesy of a reply response to this world wide known BP Bullet inventor after several written inquires.
Perdersoli did not respond as well. Pietta response was rude they are all unprofessional.
I am looking at other manufacturing possibilities for my customer base away from Italy. To produce some very fine powerful unique percussion revolvers.
Currently looking at Sweden, Poland, Estonia, Czech Republic Turkey, Pakistan, Philippines.
@@MrHrKaidoOjamaaVKJV I really doubt that these huge companies have the time to read your messages. There's no point in listening to single people when they have a shit ton of statistics that they can use to choose what would be the most profitable move
@@Homanjer
While I do understand the statement that you convey as far as to narrow mined marketing concepts.
However the responses from these Italian replica Arms manufacturers is not consistent with professionalism and protocol inside the industry.
As I am a recognized world reknown unique speciality Black Powder bullet series inventor with established connections in the industry. I point this out to the masses of BP enthusiasts to see for themselves. As I further seek to provide unique new specialty items to the Black Powder Community.
@@MrHrKaidoOjamaaVKJV i cant find anything about you on the internet so youre probably not important enough to these companies to make a difference
Gah! $175-250,000? _Just_ out of my price range...
TheGoldenCaulk I like how your profile picture matches this comment
TheGoldenCaulk I thought I might buy it till I saw the price...
Just remember, guys.... someone once paid $1.25 million for 1 gun. You think a quarter million is crazy? It's nothing to some of these guys.
TheGoldenCaulk if i raid my swear jar i could afford it with cash to spare lol.. fyi a few more dollars were added to the jar when i saw the price of this revolver
It seems in visual comparison the Dragoon compared to the experimental Root Dragoon does not seem "Basically Identical". One can visibly see the Root Dragoon's cylinder is longer more like a Walker and barrel also looks like about 8 inches or more.
A more accurate way would have been to measure the dimensions of both.
I've seen the sister of this experimental model in Hartford's Museum of CT History. (See my YT Video.)
The Root Dragoon looks somewhat like a Remington.
Like to see a firing replica made by Uberti, Pedersoli etc. I am the CEO of a Black Powder Products company
As such I approached Flli Pietta several times on making replicas of this featured experimental model and the other experimental prototype1850 second model Dragoon with Hinged Top Strap .
Flli Pietta Company are extremely Unhelpful, Un business like and would not even respond to formal letters of inquiry.
I have not given up on this effort and seek out a reasonable manufacture to do business with.
One big issue is getting buyers for such a Special production run. Many want an inexpensive Pietta or Uberti.
I will say this, if such replicas were to be made by a manufacturer they would be costing several times higher then a standard replica model.
I used to think the Colt 1860 was the most beautiful revolver ever made... not so sure now.
To me the 1851 colt navy is the most beautiful revolver ever made, but this Root revolver makes me want both, a shame no one is making replicas of this gorgeous piece of firearm history ...
Dragoon is the most beautiful it’s like a less refined just bigger navy
what a magnificent piece.. I've never had a revolver catch my eye as much as this one, just outstandingly cool.
I have never seen nor heard of a side hammer revolver. This was really neat to see!
Even the sound of that lock cycling is beautiful. Incredible gun.
That is a very pretty revolver.
It somehow manages to look sci-fi :O
So beautiful!
Exactly, "Firefly" and "Blade Runner" were first things that came to my mind.
It looks lot like some weapon from steampunk movies.
I can just imagine Nimschke standing next to it, drooling.
How many houses is this gun going to go for?
chapiit08 $175k - $250k not sure about the conversion rate to houses these days
About the better half of Detroit.
Or the better half of the worse half.
If your in the market this a city buy me that has a super high crime rate and the whole city all together is worth 37,000$ so it can be yours some day

Easily one of the coolest looking revolvers I have ever seen. The lines and finish verge on artistic.
Wow, what a beautiful finish on that piece :-o
I'm a simple man. I see a cap and ball revolver, I press like.
Gorgeous!
With its rarity, significance for the development of other iconic models, and incredible condition, I don't even dare think the kind of money it will fetch...
That is really good stuff Ian. Beautiful and in like new condition. I wish I could afford it. Awesome video as always. Thanks.
I would love to see a behind the scenes video showing your set up and how you do your videos, especially the RIA videos. Keep up the great work! This channel got me interested in guns and their engineering, and I've been hooked ever since.
omfg that gun is beautiful
omg Ians telling us we can bid on it like who here has that kind of money to blow on a pistol like this? not me I know that
If you're a gun collector and have the money you can.
I come back to this video every few months atleast just to see this pistol again. Truly a gorgeous firearm.
Happy day: finding a forgotten weapons episode I've never seen, is really cool, and hasn't been commented on in over four years. Thank you Ian.
Hey same! I thought this was the new one until I saw "uploaded 4 years ago"
A beautiful weapon. Hope to see it in auctions again someday.
You, sir, are my hero! Number one gun channel on youtube! Information on the history and mechanical operation of firearms! Great stuff, keep it coming! And I feel like you have your dream job? I was wondering if there are any .44 automags anywhere anymore? That would be very interesting in terms of the operation of the pistol for such a powerful cartridge and the be it short history of the firearm is also interesting.

As to have this experimental model as well as others the Colt 1850, 2nd Model Dragoon with Top Strap replicated in a full firing model.
@@MrHrKaidoOjamaaVKJV Colt made a dragoon with a top strap??
@@MrHrKaidoOjamaaVKJV I've heard your bullets are awesome, when I get my tax return I'm buying a Uberti Dragoon and I plan on buying your bullets or a bullet mold to use for deer/black bear hunting in the dragoon. Thanks for keeping black powder cool.
@@willfromsc1168
That is an Excellent choice.
You will need some modifications done such as a Higher Front Sight mounted, Deepened Rear Hammer Sight, Enlagement of the Loading Port ,Cap Post Block, Cutting the Forcing Cone, intall a Lanyard Loop.
I do recommend a Walker over Dragoon as to longer cylinder powder capacity and barrel leangth which are for optimum performance.
As well as also having the modifications done as I recommended above plus having an 1860 Army Loading Lever latch put on.
For all such modifications I Highly recommend the services of
Master Black Powder Gunsmith Dykes Reber of the

@@MrHrKaidoOjamaaVKJV Thanks for the advice, it's strange how people today discount black powder guns as ineffective but Elmer Keith and others who actually used them said that they were better than most cartridge guns of the era.
That Blueing is AMAZING !
Very nice. Although I have to say it looks more like a combination of the Remington 1858 and No. 3 revolver. Very cool gun though, thanks for showing.
That is an exceptionally beautiful revolver.
That is the sleekest most beautiful 1800's fierarm I have ever seen. I so wish I had the scratch to buy it.
Design is just beautiful.
You’re the best gun channel on UA-cam hands down
Thank you for bringing to life all the firearms that I studied as a young man.
Ardy Head
Do you know anything of this model or the Colt 1850 2nd Model Dragoon with Top Strap?
I like a lot of different finishes depending on the firearm. A really well done bluing is hard to beat though. Nothing like what I see today mind you except very high end custom firearms. That is so deep and rich, even after all these years.
Wow. Beautiful...I'd love to have a repro of that. I can see some of the drawbacks, but I'd still love to spend some time with one.
That's a beautiful looking pistol.
I've waited five years for Uberti, or (much more likely based off their history) Pietta to add this to their lineups. Can't imagine why they haven't yet other than a real one being too hard to get a hold of. Just get the small one and scale it up and you have something that's close enough for all intensive purposes.
Wow, that's a really beautiful weapon.
Very cool, just noticed that there is a hole drilled in the top strap directly above the cylinder gap. Wonder if the revolving rifling had the same hole. I assume it'f for fouling management.
Love the finish on this one
I wish gun companies would remake some of these and sell them on the market I would buy one just to have it would be a nice pice to talk about
As a speciality Black Powder bullet inventor I tried several times to have replicas of this and others made.
I inquired by writing to; Pietta, Uberti and Pedersoli none of them are intetested they all had a really nasty unhelpful attitude.
I am looking elsewhere for possible manufactures like in Turkey and the Philippines.
Man how cool, kinda curious why noones made a run of these as replica guns like pietta or something. How cool would it be to have one of these in 45 colt or something.
That is so strange it is beautiful!
I wonder if Fireplace Collector picked this up. This one of a kind weapon is right up his alley.
such a beautiful looking gun
Im in love with the Colt sidehammer carbines and one day hope to own one of the large cailbre Colt "British" models. There are a few up for grabs at Bonhams in December.....welll....maybe next year. I will be able to bid on one.
Id kill to have that pistol, and back in the day would have probably had one made to order.....the sidehammer and solid frame design is just so much more attractive. I like my guns big n solid looking.
could be nice a video showing diferent gun finish grade colts from all times, and how they do it.... same with S&W winchester etc
What a beautiful pistol.
Wow that looks really good.
I think I speak for all of us when I say Hnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng.
I think I'd make the same noise if I tried to use this as a carry pistol.
It's mildly amusing to think of how much flak Desert Eagle owners get for buying big, expensive handguns.
You do. I still get goosebumps picking this thing up.
Dragoons were intended to be carried in saddle holsters, not on a belt. A three pound revolver would be no big deal to a horse.
My erection agrees.
I was joking about using it as a carry pistol...
That is beautiful
If this interested you, then go to FW and C&B Kerr revolver reviews. Kerr revolvers also use another type of side hammer system. Odd looking, but very functional.
Beautiful gun, I would definitely try to get this if I could
Very cool... thanks for the demo!
That thing is so dope.
BEAUTIFUL pistol!
Waw, this gun looks amazing.
Very nice!
Beutiful revolver. Much more sleek looking and rounded than the standard dragoon.
Root Dragoon looks even BIGGER than the "normal" Dragoon! :)
Pawnshops here in big Spring tx will give about
$15 to $20 dollars for it and that’s a maybe.
They won’t know what it is. They would believe that it a modern reproduction.
They offered me $350 for a pre 29 4 screw 44mag that’s fully deep relief engraved and gold inlaid. It has a Buffalo on one side and an elk on the other side in gold. The value of my revolver is about $4000 +.
I've missed a bit of the greeting from yesterday
I don't know anything about firearms but my god that gun is beautiful. The wear just makes it more beautiful.
Arnold: "Phull thaht levah dhooown!"
Honestly I would buy one of those if I found it, it’s a sexy revolver.
I need to see this one in action.
Gorgeous piece. Too bad they never put it into production.
Most beautiful cap and ball revolver ever made imho.
i would think this "geared" loading lever was developed to get a loading "ram"dat slides straight in and out of the cylinder to be loaded. with the normal system(as in the dragoon) the ram does not move straight, it comes in at an angle.
a fascinating expirament
Cool is the only word that comes to mind
6 shots. Enough to kill anything that moves.
so would this style of pistol be more durable than the regular Dragoon? Or would it still be prone to the same problems?
One of a kind, Gorgeous, Colt, Experimental, we are already well into the hundred thousands here XD. That's why videos and pictures are taken, for all us lesser beings who actually want to shoot them, instead of just display them :P
Wow What a Gun.
The blued finish is schweet. I wish I could find parts for my guitars that looked like that. I've found 'black chrome'. It is close and occasionally priced right for the " quality " .
Beautiful gun. As a southpaw the position of that hammer on the off side must be very comfortable in the hand. It looks like it has rifle size cones, (nipples). Carrying only one size cap for your rifle and revolver would have been an advantage. Thanks again and outstanding as always.
I love prototype guns!
WHERE ARE YOU UBERTI? SEE WHAT YOU ARE MISSING IT"S RIGHT THERE. HERES JOHNNY!
Never seen that before wonder why it wasn't used in the war between the state's looks great.
It wasn't released to the public, I'm guessing. It also looks very heavy, which is the opposite of what Colt was trying to do.
A beautiful piece of hardware, I can imagine it like this but converted to centre fire cartridges, colt saa like and side releasing cylinder
The 1855 I think is the most badass looking revolver ever made, imo!
Man I'd buy a reproduction of that in a heartbeat
I should get a black powder revolver...
Thanks Ian. Are there any reproductions out there of this gun?
I'm sorry to be so late to the table on this one, but there is SOOOOOO much to learn! How many grains of powder was each chamber of the cylinder of this revolver designed to accept? UBERTI????????????????????? PLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZ???? I WANNNNNNNNT ONE...PLEEEEZ!!
What's a pity, you did not show what is inside this special, experimental weapon! I mean - this very interesting thing in the back side of the frame. Another Colts revolvers had in this place the What's that? Easier access to the cylinder? I understand something like that in LeMat revolver where the user need the access to the additional barrel. But in Colt? What for?
So, how come they did away with the top strap I wonder
Looks like one of those Lee VanCleve specials.
I will like to see all your weapons on scale 1/6 for my Jonah hex armory room :)
Ian cut himself off when he started to name the disadvantages of the sidelock design and now my curiousity is going crazy. Was it that the smaller models were delicate or was it something else?
*sidehammer design
probably doesn't want to say anything to discourage potential buyers to bid on it
Maybe the issue with this gun, is that It looks like that with the required firm grip from a right handed shooter, the grip would rest over the hammer pivot point, potentially slowing down the hammer, potentially to the point of not firing.
It also seems like the revolver cylinder is longer than on the Walker. I wonder if it took a heavier charge?
This is the first "old west -y" revolver that I truly like in appearance (and maybe the LeMat, but that's a different story). Thanks for sharing!
That seems a very forward design in a lot of ways.
I would love to own a replica of this.
SWEEEEET review! Superb swatches of history brought to us with style. (Yes, I said swatches...)
Ian,
Super cool! I'd love to get some detailed scaled pictures of that and try to build one. Now that would be a super cool percussion pistol. Do you think RIA could help with that? Do you think RIA could give contact information for the next owner?
Rockstar better start putting some of these badass revolvers in Red Dead Redemption 2 online
would love to see a repro of it.
