I try to keep a journal but I don't have a massively exciting life and I find I have very little to say. I feel like I write very similar things and I get bored and stop.

It's more writing about your feelings than literally writing "today I went to work and ate some toast" and that kind of thing. Write down your ideas for cool inventions, what you thought of a movie you watched that day or about someone interesting you saw in the street or about the existence of aliens... That kind of thing x

I've been struggling to write in a journal regularly for a long time. For years I'd kept journal after journal and it was, as you say, super cathartic and therapeutic. So thank you very much! Hearing you talk about all the benefits and how enjoyable it is reminded me about how happy it made me and how rewarding journaling can be. I think now I'll be able to get back in the swing of things! New subscriber too haha

This was a great video! I'm not new to journaling, but I love watching videos on journaling and seeing what others say about it. It's so true that if you can't be honest with yourself, or a blank notebook, who can you be honest with? However, I know for most people being honest with yourself can sometimes be scarier than being honest with others. We lie more to ourselves than other people a lot of the time. I think journaling definitely helps work through those sort of problems!
I like to combine everything into my journals, no limits. So music, stickers, pictures, tickets, things from the day, paint and some days just plain old writing.

Just found your channel and love your personality. I have a handful of notebooks with a handful of pages filled. I just always fall out of it. The idea of passing journals on to the next generation is so romantic, though. And from a psych perspective it's so important. Thanks for the ideas!

Thanks for this! I've watched A LOT of Journal How-To vids and this was by far the most unique with really good advice 😊

Definitely agree with you on substance over style - that's something I try to keep in mind as I journal. I've been writing (with a few breaks here and there) for 9 years now and I can't imagine not doing it.

there are also journals with a mix of papers: half and half or with lines on one side of each page, and plain on the other :) and tons of bullet journal papers

Another thing I personally try to remember if i'm writing about emotional lows or negative experiences is to brainstorm ways to make the situation better, no matter how minuscule. It's fine if all you want to do is to get something off your chest but I find ending an entry off with some kind of action that will make you feel better ensures a journal doesn't only become about upsetting unresolved things. It's can be useful for getting in the habit of self-care and problem solving.
p.s. what a lovely video, really helpful x

I love writing in my journal. In June (a bit of an overwhelming month for me) I think I did 17 entireties, which is the most I've ever done in a month cause I think my average is about 5 :') the problem with me is that sometimes when I have overwhelming feelings, they are so overwhelming that I don't want to sort them out and put them into coherent words. so I just leave it and then regret it. for some reason journaling sometimes feels like such an effort for me and I wish I could just pour my thoughts onto the page. any suggestions on how to help with that?

Charli West. to me when that happens i would just write it all without even thinking about it. just write and what comes on my mind i just write it until i feel better. my handwriting during this is not even readable because i was writing with my feelings. after all that i folded the page in half and let it be. i hope this helps

Is it odd that I don't keep sketch books or journals? If there's a sketchbook page I really like i'll keep it until I either redraw it or find it to be extremely unskilled or boring. And I don't keep journal stuff at all (unless it's poetry, does that count?)

I either use an A4 or A5 journal. They're big, they have a lot more pages, and it allows me to see what I write. I don't write in cursive. That's because I can't see worth a damn. My cursive writing is too tiny.
