I love your story! I am a lifelong Christian. But back in the late 1960s, with my church youth group, I attended an ecumenical series, that involved us going to 6 different churches, all of different Christian denominations. One of those was a Catholic youth group. Each week, we would begin at their church. And before we'd travel to another church, we'd have a brief service that included singing songs that the Catholic youth group sang. Though I'd been to church my entire life, and had been in junior and youth choirs, I'd never sung any of the hauntingly beautiful songs, they taught us. One was this song. It touched me deeply as well! I love that it touched you, a Hindu, as well! And unlike some here, I don't condemn your religion, or you for being a part of it. I feel God knew what he was doing when he had me be born where I would learn Christianity. And it was his plan that you be a Hindu. A few years after that ecumenical series, that made realize that though Christians believed and worshipped in many ways, the basis was the same, and then I took a comparative religions class. In that class, while learning about the beliefs and customs of the major religions of the world, I realized that at their core, all religions have a lot in common. And that following each of them, leads to one being a good person, with respect for our fellow human beings. And in the end that is the whole purpose of every religion, that we put others before ourselves, and judge noone. And I love that you and I, with very different backgrounds, were moved in the same way, by this song!!
Might get some negative feedback from this, but we all sure the same God there is only one true God God is known by many different names, but Jesus Christ is only known by Jesus Christ the son of God, so glad that you realize that the son of Jesus Christ died for you on the cross for your sins praying for you and holding you in the name of Jesus Christ to strengthen your bond with him. This song spoke to my heart when God was preparing me for the mission field to build a church in another nation. I went with this song and it was truly manifested in my heart and life. God made the way where there seemed no way. My hands were empty but my heart was full and God supplied and a church was built. Amen. Praise be to God!

I was once a choir member too in our community Catholic Chapel we always sang this during Sundays Holy week we can also sing this every day.accompanied by a guitar and the organ piano it really pleading to the ear we can feel the presence of God within us.

He would say these things to make you try harder so I got trained to sing in a big cathedral choir then went small town where fire had burnt 21 houses in one area & 11 funerals we had in 2 wks One day choir couldn't come so I was asked to sing this hymn solo & I prayed & asked Jesus to please help me sing with the voice of an angel & I sang best ever at strangers funeral So now I'm 83 writing plans for my funeral seeing I'm gtg older quick & this is one hymn I will request sung at my funeral I love it

I was not aware that many consider this to be a Catholic hymn. I am a Protestant Christian, and we sing this hymn as well. I used to sing in our chancel church choir, and we have sung this as an Anthem before. It's a beautiful call to go where God leads us.
Yes, it is in my denomination's Hymn book, now, "The Chalice Hymnal", which was put together by a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and an ordained minister. He didn't write the songs, but edited the book, I believe in the 1970s. His name was Daniel Merrick, and I had the privilege of belonging to the same church as him in the 1980s and '90s. He gathered songs from various denominations and even included songs from "Godspell", and "Jesus Christ Superstar"! But when I was growing up in the 1950s and 60s, our hymnal at the time didn't include this or the songs from musicals. The Chalice Hymnal also includes old classic hymns that we did sing, way back when. I'm not sure when this song was written or began being used in churches, but I, too, first heard it when my youth group joined with ones of 5 or 6 other denominations, including a Catholic group. And the Catholics introduced the song to us, back in 1967 or '68. So maybe they were the first to sing it, since a lot of us connect it to their denomination. Wherever it first originated, I'm so glad it did, because I love it!!

My daughter died on 4/1/24! She planned her funeral so that we would not bear that pain. This is one of the songs she requested to be played. I cry every single time I hear this song. Her faith guided her to a much better place as this song indicates. It is going to take a long time to get over her passing. With God’s grace, I will get there!

My daughter died on 4/1/24! She planned her funeral so that we would not bear that pain. This is one of the songs she requested to be played. I cry every single time I hear this song. Her faith guided her to a much better place as this song indicates. It is going to take a long time to get over her passing. With God’s grace, I will get there!
