I’m from mattoon, and I knew a girl who used to be a maid that cleaned this retired officers house and they got to talking about the Mad Gasser and he told her they caught him making the gas in his basement but they never told the public

Every time I watch something like this by any sort of channel who narrate stories, it just makes me sleepy. I guess it’s because the music and the narrators voice is so calming

Listen to the podcast unsolved mysteries by Parcast. They do a better in depth on this case. Show how sheriff re-election made the sheriff close the case and try to blame the gas planet. Yet when the gas planet showed that a leak was impossible the sheriff then blame hysteria. The podcast goes in to other gas attacks outside of town.

Unless your people are from there it's unlikely you'd hear about it. My grandmother was a resident during the time the attacks happened (though she was a very small child at the time), she passed the story down to my dad who told me.
My mom’s family grew up in Mattoon and to protect the kids from the scarier parts of this story used to tell them that the mad gasser was just someone who broke into your house to rip a wild fart and blame someone else for it.

Not only might this explain why the public's imagination ran in the direction so quickly, but why the local press was so quick to suggest a recurrent assailant without prompting. b) The "10-man task force" you mention was actually the entire Mattoon p[Police department, which consisted of 2 officers and 8 patrolmen.
Get over it, Ryan and Shane have their own channel for other content and they won't be back on Buzzfeed until COVID restrictions are loosend and they can do Unsolved again in close proximity. Crying about it isn't going to change anything.

Yeah. Most likely mass hysteria. It's actually quite common. Even when there is nothing going on. An entire school shutdown once because a teacher said she smelled something and got a headache. Soon everyone was getting sick and was hospitalized. In the end there was no gas leaks or anything. Fear caused it all. The mind is powerful.
