NITRATE Poisoning Or NITRATE Shock? How to Reduce Nitrates
In this video we take a closer look at how excessive nitrates can harm your fish. We'll talk about how to test for nitrates and how to control them.
The significance of nitrate in the aquarium is arguably less understood by fish keepers than the effect of ammonia and nitrite. Although nitrate is not as directly lethal as ammonia or nitrite, over time, high levels of nitrate negatively impact fish and the aquarium environment in general.
Where Does Nitrate Come From?
Nitrate is a by-product of nitrite oxidation during the latter stages of the nitrogen cycle and is present to some degree in all aquariums. Detritus, decaying plant material, dirty filters, over-feeding, and overstocking the aquarium all contribute to increased levels of nitrate.
Additionally, tap water used to fill the aquarium may contain nitrate in it. In the United States, drinking water may have nitrates as high as 40 parts per million (ppm). Before adding water to your aquarium, test it for nitrate to discover if the levels are unusually high in your water source. If your baseline nitrate is above 10 ppm, consider other water sources that are nitrate-free.
Nitrate shock occurs when fish are suddenly exposed to a vastly different level of nitrate, up to several hundred mg/L. Although nitrate shock usually refers to a sudden increase in the level of nitrate, fish can be equally shocked if nitrate levels suddenly drop dramatically.
Great information in this video! My tap water has 10 ppm of nitrate so that's not good but I still do weekly water changes and some tanks have nitrate filters on them and I'm starting to use live plants to lower the nitrates
Thank you brother 👍👍👍 yeah I agree I definitely want to use more plants as filtration 😁 have a great day !
@@VinnysAquatics my nitrates were at 110 pm last night and lowered to 50 ppm.. what happened? i did no water change.
nice shearing dear friend
Thumbs up 41 and reminder on
You are so creative my dear
Thank you so much 😁 great to meet you! Hope you have a great day 🎉👍👍
I have to use a nitrate filter on my faucet water as it has 50 ppm which is the legal limit in the UK
Wow 50 ppm? Good idea with that filter! Have.a great day brother 😁
Big Like !!!!
Enjoyed and watched fully!!!
Thank you my friend 😁
Great vid and thanks for the kind words last night..
Good job on nitrites and nitrates..
My pleasure brother 👍 thank you and hope you’re having a great day 😁
Nice love it my brother💯💗
Thank you brother 👍👍👍 have a great week 😁
a valuable and informative share my brotha...thanks for this share
Thank you brother 👍👍👍
So useful info.
Thank you brother 👍 hope you’re doing good 😁
Thanks for the information. It's the first time I hear about a nitrate shock when reducing the nitrate due to a waterchange with low nitrate water (tapwater in the Netherlands contains no nitrate at all).
Great video Vinny
Thank you brother 👍👍👍
Such an informative video. Cheers buddy 🤓🤟🏼 _...PA_ 💙
Thank you my friend 👍👍👍
Great info Vinny! Thanks for sharing. Dave
Dave 👍👍👍 thank you brother! Hope you’re having a great week 😁
topic that one must watch if you keep fish well done on this
Thank you so much my friend 👍👍👍
Really beneficial Information Bro. Thanks very much for sharing 👏👏👍👍

Another great video 👍🏽✌🏽
Thank you brother 👍👍👍
Wow Vinny, this was so interesting
this is so helpful
Thank you much 👍 loved seeing Ireland! Great share 😁
Great info Vinny!
Thank you brother 👍 I’m enjoying your new video. That tank is looking good 😁
Well explained Vinnie. I enjoyed your discussion on this. Thanks.
Daniel 👍 thank you so much brother 😁
I always do a water change before I introduce a new, quarantined fish to the tank. Lots of great information brother.
Good idea 👍 thank you brother! Have a great week 😁
Thanks For Sharing 💪 ✌
Patrick 👍👍👍 thank you brother 😁
great video very well explained
Thank you so much my friends 😁😁😁
This is really interesting thank you for making this video👍🔥
Thank you so much 😁
Great info Vinny Jack explains it like how it would be for us humans at different altitudes and how people can adjust to different air quality and pressures….like those people that wear altitude masks while working out….then it’s easier to work out without it….
Jack and Dan 👍👍👍 excellent point! Hope you guys are having a great week brothers 😁
Useful and informative this video on Nitrates, let's say it is the ABC of the aquarist. In nature the biotope is a large environment and the nitrogen cycle is completed, while in the aquarium it is not or rarely. Very good Vinny you explained very well.
Thank you so much brother 👍👍👍 I hope you are having a great week ! Stay safe my friend 💕
Nice video
Very informative
😀😃😂
Thank you my friend 👍👍👍
Really informative and well explained. Keep up the good work!
Thank you and same to you my friend 👍👍👍
Masya Alloh.... Beautyfull Fish
Thank you my friend 😁
Great video vinny its now making me think about live plants in my main tank to combat the nitrate
Thank you brother 👍 I definitely need to step up my plant game myself 😁
Thank for sharing how to reduce Nitrates good knowledge
Vinny I thought I was subscribed to your channel bro but I've got u locked in now happy Fishkeeping
UA-cam is weird like that 😳 I have to keep hitting the bell cause I never get notifications... have a great weekend brother 👍👍👍
This is really interesting
Thank you brother 👍 had a great time on your stream 😁
@@VinnysAquatics Thanks for doing that
Good video with good info! I wish I could keep plants alive, I gotta death thumb 😔
Omg same here, I’m so bad with plants 🤣🤣🤣
I just had something wrong with my tank 2 full water changes and changed the substrate and all seems good now
Dan 👍👍👍 sometimes gas bubbles can form In a deep substrate.... have a great day brother 😁
Buster is doing a good job... Keeper 😆
He’s such a great dog 😁 hope you’re having a great day brother 👍
10/10 for informative video, -5 for the corny jokes …i dont know if I should send you a joke book or a couple Rodney Dangerfield videos 😂😂 Thanks though I enjoyed it, I even chuckled a bit!
Thank you for watching 👍👍👍hope you
See you around ! Have a great day my friend 😁
I have messy goldfish and caused osmotic shock from to much water changed. Tetra pH correct helps best. DON'T use the whole tablet. Just a forth for 20 gal or less. I have found the whole tablet is too much!!!!! Mix with water and add a little at a time until fish aren't gasping.
Can I use distilled water in my saltwater aquarium if I put trace elements back in it?
Hi Joe 👍 yes you definitely can use it! Thank you for the comment 😁😁😁
@@VinnysAquatics thank you sir nice videos
like friend :)
Thank you my friend 🎉👍👍
My area has very hard waters 💧😪😫
Joe 👍👍👍 how you doin brother? Yeah I’m seeing we all have different water to deal with, so much variation we need to be part time chemists 😁
I have Ammonia in my tapwater
Omg brother that’s crazy 😳
Water change is solution
I agree 💯 and plants help also 😁 have a great day my friend !
My tap has 25 ppm nitrate…
"if your nitrate are above 10ppm, consider geting a Different water source."
Lol..bro..my base nitrate level Is about 80ppm.
-severe diatom issue -4 months it's gone
-severe black hair algae - unwinnable war
Oh and I even got carpets going in my tank. All over everything even my snail shell! Yep, carpets of...HYDRA. yeah. It's gnarly.
I would also like to add, I have what seems like a very happy thriving tank(I'm extremely obsessively observant). Even my cories barely ever go to the top for air, my shrimp used to thrive (untill predator fish added),
I've also had my mollies have 2 huge and successful pregnancies, and the babies lived! Well..the ones I kept safe...lol.
Just my 2 cents
Oh did I say baseline of 80ppm.
Yeah..that's baseline. I've probably been rockin closer to 160ppm... I'm learning still. Attempting potthos denitrification now.
