Whilst Gong were recording this album Mike Oldfield was allowed access to the studio to record Tubular Bells after hours. Mike was close friends with Steve Hillage having played together with Kevin Ayers (Steve later played live with Mike on Tubular Bells).
One of those albums I never seem to tire of. Same goes for the other parts of the trilogy (and of course Camembert Electrique). Never apologise for bringing the weird Jim - it's good to go off the beaten track once in a while.
Shit!!! I can't believe you have never heard this... I am writing this comment before I watch the video.. but wow... you have gong written all over you... I was hooked on your channel from all the Tool action..!
Great Jim, Angels Egg is definitely my favourite of the trilogy but all three are absolutely fantastic and I love your channel too!
I bought this album because of the cover... best impulse buy ever. That's the advantage of riffling through albums in a physical record shop. Also it was the 1980's and I was a student. Lovely album, witty both lyrically and musically, very smooth. Not my usual fare at all (more of a Black Sabbath fan at the time) and expanded my horizons.
Recommended listen.
DISCAZO ! Joya de mi colección... 💪😎👍🏻💯🇦🇷🍺🍀🐄🔥🕺
It is pure joy.✌️🍄
Another superb reaction to a favourite of mine. Your system sounds fabulous... I have almost the same AT cartridge, really excellent.
It’s a great little system, the Rega pre amp helps a lot.
You, and we, are in for a fun ride. Looking forward to you getting all the way to part 3, "You". Nothing else quite like Gong. Blessings.
Great trilogy of albums with the wonderful Steve Hillage on guitar.
Embrace the weird is right. It is very interesting, however, to watch the band’s progression over time. Things get even better musically.
The third album in the trilogy YOU is my favorite of the series. I started with YOU on 8 track in 1974. Absolutely mind blowing.
Ee, it takes me back to when I were a lad, well early twenties anyway. Didn't catch the early Gong, but got introduced to them in about 1975. I dunno about the studio but rooms were rather heavy on atmosphere when the Gong albums were listened to. Headphones and a darkened room and erm, well the universe is a big place. So much more to Gong and related musicians to explore. Daevid Allan was a co-founder of Soft Machine, and after Gong played with some interesting musicians, keeping things fresh and interesting. The outrageous French accent is probably due to Daevid Allan spending several years in France and many of the musicians on the album being French. The prequel to the trilogy Camembert Electrique is well worth a listen too.
Oh ! Love this album sooo much.
Gong fronted by Daevid Allen (in both periods) always had a sense of fun, but it never detracted from the quality of musicianship. The Pierre Moerlen period in between was more serious, but still musically top notch, with the likes of Allan Holdsworth and Mike Oldfield putting in guest appearances. The current lineup fronted by Kavus Torabi maintains the spirit of Gong and plays some of the original Gong trilogy material along with their newer stuff which is also very good. Kavus's other projects are also worth checking out, particularly his band Knifeworld (who have gone into a hiatus due to his other commitments), his solo work and the psychedelic semi-ambient trio The Utopia Strong, which also features snooker legend Steve Davis on modular synth.
Seeing John Meelencamp in the big city tonight....wish me well traffic wise....lol
Super creative band. Love ‘em. Godfathers of the ‘90s rave scene and beyond. Love that you “embrace the weirdness”, Jim.
im wareing the flying teapot teashirt right now...great album.
Enjoy the trilogy, Jim 🙃 More strange things are about to happen.
I never knew this was the second ever Virgin release!! Anyways, "Have a cup of tea/have another one.../"
Nice Gojira hoodie! 😁
Well, bonkers is truth. It wasn't bad though, once they settled into the business of playing some music. 🙂
Tea Jim!
Good evening Jim,
We didn’t know about Gong when I was a teenager and about the Ozric Tentacles neither but I’m a bit older than you 👨🏼🦳. We played Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Deep Purple, Tangerine Dream, Synergy, Klaus Schulze.
😂 totally bonkers start of the album. There was something added to the tea I think 😵💫. It’s quite good though but I doubt I want to hear a whole album filled with this stuff.
I’m not impressed by the flying teapot.
Drumming on bottles. Pink Floyd did similar things on their first albums and those are the ones I like less.
Have fun at the festival. We’ll see you arriving back to earth next week.
When they get around to actually playing music it's cool
Gong is fantastic, I saw them on tour with the Ozrics this year in Exeter, they were on form as always. Would love to hear what you think of the band Cardiacs, they're like if Ian Dury, Queen, and Madness all went to the circus. Maybe check out the song Loosefish Scapegrace? Cheers!
Your fellow reactor, Just JP beat you to this one - the comments under his videos tell you all you need to know (and there's a lot) Now that you've started, it's compulsory to finish the trilogy (Albumus Interuptus Act 1973) whilst partaking of some tea (not coffee) (Dangerous Drugs Act 1920) The good news is that it gets better and better, album by album (probably the effect of the tea).
Primus had to have heard Gong.
I've seen Gong probably 5 or 6 times over the past 30 years. The line up has changed over the years. Sad to loose many of the original members. I saw the latest incarnation on a double bill last winter alongside the Ozrics. Wonderful evening! 👍
This is awesome. I like Angels Egg a lot better and You is great. However. My favorite live album of all time (mostly live) is Going Live, Etc. It's spectacular. Been listening to it for 45 years or so and it hasn't gotten old yet.
And it get's better and better as you follow the bands musical adventures. Very difficult to summarise, as the tree has so many roots and branches :)
You have to be in the mood for "crazy" music. Today I'm ready to deliver some wild screams - 5 trains to and back from work - none was on time and that cost me 1 hour of my precious time😢 looking forward to side 2. King Crimson track is Moonchild😊
Straights are never going to fully appreciate Gong.
❤
richard begin in a telefonecall box !📀
Not so bonkers as The Residents were and are....
Psychonauts unite!!!!
Gong were dynamite live. This is the weakest of the trilogy, but the last track on side one points the way to the funkiness to come.
