@William Price he is the original recording artist but it was years prior with the first group he was with called Gold City. This was a very popular song no matter the group he was with and was always a fun way to show Brian's vocal range.
Sure glad this guy humbly accepted his defeat at the hands of that operatic genius Cannup. He didn’t stand a chance-not to try and make himself look good or anything.
+slojam81 If you'll notice that Mr. Canupp is also doing the same hand gestures, telling a made up trio in the corner that he can't go any higher. What a fascinating character.
WOW! Brian Free & Assurance came to our church a couple of months ago, I bought some CDs and I am the latest biggest fan of their music -- can you imagine the fun I'm having discovering some of this older stuff for the first time? What unbelievable talent, great harmony, great musicians, great fun! Praise God for this offering, keep on singing.
I sang with them back in 2013 because my great grandmother was dying and she wanted me to sing with Brian Free And Assurance. My parents talked with my Uncle Jason Crabb and he talked to Bill Gaither. February 22, 2013 my great grandmother passes. Brian Free and Ernie Haase was there to support us at the funeral. We placed a cd of me singing with them on her grave and its still there this day!
Thank you Brian Free for redeeming this song. I only know of it because of James Cannup. What an amazing voice you have!! You sound A LOT like Celine Dion when you go really high!! (That's a compliment btw)
Personally I prefer James Canupp, I celebrate his ENTIRE catalog. It's no coincidence that 90% of the audience is geriatric, I guess the youngsters just aren't hip to these sounds. P.S. When I first heard their name, I thought it was an insurance company...you learn something new everyday.
@ffyfan15 The worst part is he said he beat Brian Free in a contest on this song and it made him pretty famous. I wouldn't believe it. I was mad that the church actually sat there and listened to him! I'm glad I found the real version!!
Hey, the poor guy James was trying his best. I bet most of you couldn't do any better. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord. That was HIS best joyful noise. I couldn't carry a tune in a paper bag, but when I am in my car, I do my best to sing along to be able to praise Him that way. I know He appreciates ALL praise He receives.
For those (just hearing) of Brian Free, check out videos of him with Gold City.......absolutely INSANE vocals! "Shoutin' Ground" is a good one, "How Deep is the Water" is another.....those songs got some umph to them
Who is higher? Who is better? Who cares? Whether you like Brian Free, David Phelps, Johnny Cook, Rosie Rozelle, Ernie Haase, or any other the best, remember that they are/were spreading God's message
@justinlee827 I do listen to a lot of his stuff. I like him better now then i do back in his older days (but still, that's just me). But as most people know, Danny Funderburk is still my favorite. (:
You know this actually provides a little context to Canupp's version and makes it not as bad. I thought the "that's all I'm doin" was ad libbed because his voice was cracking, but you see Brian Free does it here too, maybe that is part of the song. Also I didn't realize the song was basically a game of who can go the highest, and of course your voice is going to sound worse as you push it to the limits
@@zac3392He's amazing, much better than these imitators. A true generational vocal talent! He'd be even better if he converted to Scientology and changed the lyrics to "Looking for a planet" and "looking for a spaceship".
@justinlee827 I love Brian, but for me, Jay just has something to his voice that just makes me pick him over Brian. But that's whats great about Southern Gospel, we all get to have our different opinions.
It is sad that all some of you can do is criticize scoff and persecute a man who is trying to share the gospel of Jesus Christ thru song. Thanks for proving the scriptures true. I will pray for you.
If you’re referring to Canupp, you must have missed his “testimony” bragging on himself and not giving glory to God… that’s why people are mocking him, not because he sings badly.
I'm just here because I'm curious about what this song is supposed to sound like
You watch the "worst church singer" too?
Me too!! I hate that worst church singer 🤬
Feelsbadman78 Esparza how did he say he was better the brain free obviously not 😂
@William Price he is the original recording artist but it was years prior with the first group he was with called Gold City. This was a very popular song no matter the group he was with and was always a fun way to show Brian's vocal range.
@William Price you are entitled to your opinion, obvi unpopular but yours none the less.
The good old days, before he got worn out by Canupp.
That Canupp guy sure is famous. Not to brag on himself.
FUNNIEST THING I'VE READ ALL WEEK!! LOL
Cannup destroyed this Brian Free scrub on this track.
Rick with Soil Samurai Gardens Not to make him look good or anything.
I hope your kidding
Legend has it James Cannupp was in the audience that day planning his next move.
Sure glad this guy humbly accepted his defeat at the hands of that operatic genius Cannup. He didn’t stand a chance-not to try and make himself look good or anything.
But that’s what happened.
So this is what James Canupp hears in his head when he's singing.
+slojam81 If you'll notice that Mr. Canupp is also doing the same hand gestures, telling a made up trio in the corner that he can't go any higher. What a fascinating character.
Matthew Pippin Also the "that's all im doing" line at the end. Fascinating character indeed.
Amen! Brian is the original. Canupp is a very poor copy.
Is canupp saying he's Brian free?
Lol that man is delusional.
It's actually pretty remarkable to hear this song they way it was supposed to be sung...on key.
i think it’s the same guy. i have no idea but it sounds like him and he says he sung with this group at the beginning of the video😭
I think its Brian Free that is singing @samuelbeaver8841
We are supposed to make a joyful noise unto to the Lord, but James Canupp's voice is anything BUT joyful!
his high voice is amazing.
WOW! Ole James Cannup told us he wore you out brother.

Restoration Apostolic Church this is pretty cool.
Good on you for making it happen and I wish she could have witnessed it.
Is this a James Cannup burner account?
0:00- Brian Free
1:21- Jon Anderson
2:21- Celine Dion
Oh man you're right. Wow. Never seen those three names in the same comment before either
Thank you Brian Free for redeeming this song. I only know of it because of James Cannup. What an amazing voice you have!! You sound A LOT like Celine Dion when you go really high!! (That's a compliment btw)
Yeah, he does sound like Celine Dion! Interesting...lucky guy...
if you haven't heard the bad version of this song listen to it its priceless
He has an amazing voice he sings for the Lord I don't think he tries to compete definitely feel the spirit in this song praise God Amen
I like at the end when he sings "Come, that's ALL I'm doing"...lol
yes so do i
Brian Free CAN hit the high tones, like no one other could do!
Except James Canupp legend has it he wore him out
Imagine living in Canupp's shadow as some lowly hack of a local hero...Brian Free has my sympathy...
I'm not even into Christian music, but this guy has a great voice. I loved it. lol
Dude, no offense or nothin, but you probably haven't heard Canupp's version.
Not to make him look good or anything.
Brian free is awesome I watched this like 10 times in a row!!
Good show boating. Brian is fantastic!!!!
I wore this guy out once during a competition.
Not bragging or anything, you just did!
HAHAHAHA, good grief, Canupp has zero self-awareness.
We all know this is a burner account, James...
yes...one of the best tenors ever.
Personally I prefer James Canupp, I celebrate his ENTIRE catalog. It's no coincidence that 90% of the audience is geriatric, I guess the youngsters just aren't hip to these sounds.

"Brian Free Insurance?" 🤷♂️🤣🤣🤣
love Brian Free and Assurance, have for many years, they get better as the years go on.
Can't believe he didn't make the Grammy's "In Memoriam" segment after Cannup wore him out. Sad!
And to think this was only 3 years before he got worn out.
Not my type of music, but that guy's got some pipes.
This song sounds strange when done in key with pitch.
Not to mention tempo.
I’m here because i love god and jesus
Brian Free should stop competing with James Canupp. He has been thoroughly owned
Brian is the first to have sung this song this way.
@@wjboozer How about Vestal Goodman's, and Johnny Cook's battle in 1974 ring any bells?

My PawPaw used to listen to this on repeat every night to go to sleep. RIP RJP
This is my favorite Christian song Love Jesus

@@zac3392 no I sure didn’t. Dang
when i was in high school I meet these guys twice
Love it!❤
You have to feel sorry for him, he always knew that one day, Canupp was going to wear him out.
We saw yall live there amazing
Good try, but you're only an imitation of James Canupp!
News flash Brian Free was signing this back in the early 90s with Gold City. Canupp is the copy, and a very poor one at that.
Wanda Boozer that was meant with the highest amount of sarcasm earthly possible!!!
Business end LOL!!!!!
This can't be right, it sounds nothing like the real thing.
JAMES CANNUP FOR LIFE!!!
Our next number is a true gospel classic made famous by Frankie Valli - “Sherry”
I keep hearing that other dude in my head, can't help it
I love Brian Free he is so talented!!!!
the lord helped me with my problems to depression

Good Grief he jest keeps a modulating! Amazing range!
CANNUP!!!
@Tsuzyoko Thank you so much. I thought it was but looking at some of the new photos of Brian, he totally doesn't look the same anymore!!
this is my favrot song of his
Great love this song
Always looking for that city...
Brian Free let Cannup wear him out for the sake if having a laugh....poor guy
I prefer the "REAL" version.....
Anyone who's here from the James Canupp video, go check out Johnny Cook's version. It's mindblowing.
This is how James Cannup got his start
I never get tired of listening to this video....Brian can do it..
Who is higher? Who is better? Who cares? Whether you like Brian Free, David Phelps, Johnny Cook, Rosie Rozelle, Ernie Haase, or any other the best, remember that they are/were spreading God's message
But nobody spreads like James Canupp!!
@AtariMaxiToriyama, depending on what octaves his range falls in, that is very likely true.
he's a poor man's James Canupp
Brian Free sounds even better in person
Hello Brandos
Bob Caldwell. He's a great bass!
I just watched that tonight!
Great tenor.
Rick and Bubba Brought Me here ! RICK AND BUBBA NATION

Definitely enjoyed this.! and yes in spite of all the stupid comments that are posted...
james canupp said he wore yall out
Brian's awesome :)
Oh, now I get it.
Is this the guy that Cannup wore out?
Gold City is who you want to hear sing this song!
Awsome!!
i wish i sing along with brian free on stage in person
I got to do this with them twice... It was awesome!!!
got to do it last year as well dream come true
I would but he doesn’t like to get worn out and shown up in public.

YES... it is Falsetto! Ask his vocal coach " Steve Hurst"
Biggest question when it comes to Gospel Tenors is; Brian Free( Gold City/Assurance) or Ernie Phillips (Kingsmen)?
Keith Lowe I prefer James Canupp
@@Warlock_Sack beat me to it…
This guy even ripped of James Canupp’s “That’s all I’m doing” at the end. You can tell who’s better bc of that!
Awesome Video Guys!!:)
@ffyfan15 You can see that "Bad Singers" influence in this video. This guy singing and the bad singer knew when to say "That's enough."
He is amazing! Just how many tenors can match this octave span.

Ahhhh…so that’s what the song supposed to sounds like. 😂
I'd love to BFA sing that old Gold City song "Ain't God Good "
Pfft, Canupp took it up like 18 octaves
All the way to the key of Z!
Just not the same without Canupp's zeal and delusion.
i didn't know they made men's suits with shoulder pads.

James Canupp whooped this dude. Pretty much every time he sang with him.
Thumbs up if you came from the bad version to this version to redeem your bleeding ears.
Holy moly sing it . He's almost as good as John Starns
