Looks like a sheath to protect the cylinder rod from scratches and dust. Kinda like the rubber boots sometimes on motorcycle forks. It's a good idea if you can keep them on there, dust over time can wreck the seals.

I was interested in buying a Case Mini Excavator, the question that I asked the Case Salesperson is do the Case Mini's have the same bucket changing system as the Case Backhoes.
The answer was no!!! That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard, Case Backhoes have the best, by far, system in the industry, I've had numerous Case Backhoes over the years, just for that reason alone!!!
The fact that Case didn't require Hyundai make that system for their mini's says a lot about Case management, they're either asleep at the switch or just don't care:(
Like bringing a knife to a gun fight, when you have the biggest gun on the block available:(

We'll pass that along to the product team - and the backhoe system is great - it's worth noting that CASE mini excavators do have a hydraulic quick coupler option that makes changing buckets very easy. The problem with any of the pin grabber systems is that it changes the geometry of the bucket hinge!
But as I pointed out, Case Backhoe's have by far the best system in the industry, nobody else can copy it because Case holds the patent!!
Why you would you guy's leave your best feature on the sideline's!!!
