+jasonandrachel gray This project was made for a 2x4 challenge. I could have easily bought dowels, but it was more satisfying making them from the same 2x4 as everything else. It was also fun being able to make any diameter I wanted.
Ma po I second that....... Brilliant editing and choice of music. Almost in time. Well thought out project. IN ALL ASPECTS ! Absolutely a pleasure to watch this....again and again.
A simply astounding video. Fantastic cinematography, great music, and interesting subject; and that's to say nothing of the superb craftsmanship and imagination. Thank you for sharing it with us. Leo
What an enjoyable video and loved the dowel making lesson as well. Such great fun to watch you exercise your impressive skill and patience with a delightful outcome! Thanks for sharing this!
Ben, love so much of this! Love that dowel-maker. And good to see your auto-man has enough brain to wear eye protection. Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff.
Very nice project well thought out and I like the use of the dowel jig I never show making them I just thought that everyone does it so why show it but but yours was very well put together
Wow! I have been making wood Automata for about 10 years now and this video was really fun to watch. You really did an outstanding job on this project! Your step by step video was awesome. I'm near Mankato and would love to have Coffee some time and share war stories, successes, future ideas, etc.
Thanks Ken! Nice to 'meet' you. Swapping stories might be fun. This project was a lot of fun, so I expect I'll be doing more like it in the future once my next idea hits me.
Make Crazydays Well I've done it... Let's hope this stands up to the scrutiny of the UA-cam Whiligig Wars community: ua-cam.com/video/JuJPLyg85Iw/v-deo.html
Stephane Daury Getting the blade height just right takes some tweaking, but once you do it works amazingly well. When you get the diameter just right, the smaller hole burnishes the surface of the dowel as it passes through, and leaves a nice shiny surface finish: instagram.com/p/3AxLZNxKlJ/
This is FANTASTIC, Ben!! Great project idea, super creative. Your pacing on the video itself was excellent, really great camera work and edit - well done!!
Hi Ben. Just happened across this video. Great work with the automaton and the video. I've been making automwta for about 2 years now, very addicting. Good luck in the contest.
If they are not and are as close as they are, then the head turning action would be too fast . if they are separated by a larger amount then you are correct, they need not be cut as they were. With such a close distance they were cut to ensure that the pointed end of the cam will keep its distance away from the fulcrum/ shaft of the head so that the speed of the head will be that required by the point and not the "edge" of the cam.
Thank you, you're very kind. I have many years of experience making things and tinkering. My engineering background certainly helps too :-) Thanks for watching.
Excellent work, Ben! Very clever dowel jig. I'm still working on my "Baby Elvis" automaton. I like your head twisting mechanism. I hope to be able to use a variation of it in the near future. Clever work.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME! That jig is amazing for making dowels! Mind = Blown
I know right? like wtf
buy dowels .......get real

This is a great way to gain confidence. Watch, practice, create. Thanks for the guidance and motivation.
Not sure which is better... the toy or the video! Amazing! Thank you for creating so much fun!
Amazing video not only the product but the editing and good music choice, subbed.
Thank you, and welcome to the channel. :-)
I made it myself. Just go to wood prix webpage if you'd like do the same
Absolutely marvellous.
A wonderful project. Well done on the photography.
One of the very few vids I've enjoyed on UA-cam.
Really ...... Well done.
Wow, thank you very much
Ma po I second that.......
Brilliant editing and choice of music. Almost in time.
Well thought out project.
IN ALL ASPECTS !
Absolutely a pleasure to watch this....again and again.

Just plain old, down to earth, nothing but good. Both project and video.
Thank you tralexan, you're very kind.

Thank you! You're very kind
Pretty sweet project. Probably the best one of these 2x4 projects I've seen.
Thank you.
you did a great job on the the fit and finish of your automata,
I'm probably a little biased, but I also think you're amazing! Nice work!

Ben, this speaks to me! Very clever and all I can say is I'm glad I'm not judging. Good luck in the contest. Scott
Thanks! Hope you found your perfect "white whale" :-)
That was really amazing. Great combination of styles - the gears were great. The head turn was a nice touch. Awesome job.
Thank you Joe, you're very kind.
I was thinking of participating in one of those 2x4 challenges... have to rethink that now. The bar is pretty high. :)
Simply mind-shatteringly amazing! Unless the little mechanical man actually created another little mechanical man, I could not be more impressed.
Jeff Taylor I might be an automaton myself, though I haven't figured out for sure yet.
Amazing. Very nice work.
I love the dowel-making jig as well. I'll be building one of those for my own shop.
Thank you. The dowel jig is fun. It takes some trial and error to get it set up, but it can crank out a lot of dowels fast.
You Sir are going to be a leader in about 3 years... Cheer yo..!
Real nice job. Thanks for the plug, making the dowels.
Thanks Jim Steinbrecher

That video is worth watching even just for the dowel-making rig! Clever. :)
Thanks Stephane Daury!
FYI, credit goes to Jim Steinbrecher for the dowel technique: ua-cam.com/video/6e9F_1sGOXA/v-deo.html
Ben Brandt I'm making one this weekend. :)

Edit, just saw link in the description! :)
I love this Ben! Imagining something life-sized...
Maybe I'M the life-sized version... but who's turning the crank? o_0
Amazing work
Fantastic job and nice video showing the process. Curious as to why the headturning "gears" had to be cut at 45 deg. angles?
If they are not and are as close as they are, then the head turning action would be too fast . if they are separated by a larger amount then you are correct, they need not be cut as they were. With such a close distance they were cut to ensure that the pointed end of the cam will keep its distance away from the fulcrum/ shaft of the head so that the speed of the head will be that required by the point and not the "edge" of the cam.
fantastic video, very entertaining..very cool!
+ESCAGEDO WOODWORKING Thank you!
I loved it. Congratulations! (from Rio, Brasil)
What was that wizardry at 2:41? It looks absolutely ingenious, could you elaborate on what exactly is going on?
I'm using a jig over my tablesaw to make a dowel. There's a link down in the video description to another video where I learned how to do it.
That's really cool wish I could build something like that nice job man
Thank you
Love seeing work like this. Very impressive!
