At 7:47, the reason for the disc at the center is to prevent the ring from punching through the rubber as easily. This is a common failure mode in concrete construction where you have a slab supported by a column. You need to locally strengthen the slab at the column to distribute the load and prevent punching shear. Same thing is happening here.
This question that comes up all the time whenever talking about these plates: "Any sign of the center ring coming out?" So I can see why there is a center core. It's a little disappointing for me since I love the idea of them being recycled, but I still love mine and they are a real attention grabber.
I checked Nike's website, and I think the reason they sell them in pairs, is that the 'grind' they use for the external part, changes from batch to batch (or season to season). So I think this prevents people from ending up with 2 totally different coloured plates.
I’d call this plate more “Greenwashing” if the interior part of the plate shown, which far outweighs the recycled external portion, is not made from recycled materials. The website is vague about the sourcing of the internal materials. Still love my Hi Temps of which all the rubber is from recycled tires! Buy once, cry once with Hi Temps.
If the idea is recycling what they have it makes sense, the material Nike has on hands for shoes isn't going to work great for the interior of a bumper. They could source recycled material from elsewhere but there's availability and quality concerns there.
@@DrewLSsix it just seems a bit deceptive on Nike’s part. They’re putting too much emphasis on the reuse of materials when it looks like from Coop’s cutout in the video at most 25% is from recycled materials. The rest of the sourcing is swept under the proverbial rug. Hey, it’s better than not re-using anything but at least be open about the rest of the product.
Visually looks like hardly anything in the cut section but but volume wise the recycled material makes up nearly 50% of the rubber if you assume a 15mm recycled layer thickness for a 45lb plate. Smaller plates likely higher percentage as plate thickness decreases.
I was waiting to see you are actually going to drop them from overhead loaded on barbell. How much to they bounce? Are they quieter due to the softer outer layer? What is the thickness of the 45lb plate? These could potentially be redeeming qualities of these things. In your older videos you always touched on these points when reviewing bumpers.
Just a heads up for those looking at comparing prices. You can get around the massive shipping costs by purchasing from Dicks sporting goods. Straight from Nike, I was looking at $150 additional shipping. When ordered on Dicks a pair of 45/15/10 plates came out to $388. Pretty much on par (certainly cheaper than rogue’s equivalent) with the rest of the industry. These definitely look a hell of a lot better on the rack than anything else on the market.

Some can pick these up in person depending on their location. Dick's sporting goods sell them and you can save on shipping costs if picked up locally. I just checked and at the time of posting this I found a store within 25 miles that had two pairs of 45s... There is a much closer store by me that doesn't carry them so availability varies from store to store.
Did yours turn yellow after 3-8 months? I heard this happened with the first 2 batches. They fixed it and if you email you they'll give you a credit to get new ones.
If younwanna test the yellowing over time, you've now got a pizza weight-plate that can yellow without issues. Test one part of it left outside as is, and you can use a UV Blocking clear coat sprayed on the other and see what difference it makes compared to your control group (the 2 other bumpers you have.) Is a clear coat spray the most ideal thing? No, but if someone is already spending $60-$200 more on these than the competition, just because they look cool, then they may be interested in whatever it takes to keep them from yellowing.
The real question is what type of blade to use on the reciprocal saw? Would a soft material blade work better than say a blade used for rough wood cuts or for cutting metal? I tried taking a Hackzall to a stall mat with mixed results.
220 for a set of rubber bumper plates is exactly what i'd expect from Nike. Why not just spend 50 dollars more and get such a nicer set of plates from Rogue.
Overpriced. If you want a comparable plate, go with the Rogue and save $. If you want to pay more for quality, for just $40 more you can get the Fringe color 45s with a higher durometer rating, and hubs with anchors (which helps stabilize the most common point of failure). The Nikes appear to have the standard hub that you’ll find in any crumb bumper. I just don’t see the argument for these (other than paying to get the swoosh).

i was kinda excited for these because i thought "oh its just excess rubber scrap that is being repurposed and they are branding it as them doing something altruistic, surely these will be a cheaper option" nope lmao $110 for a 45lb plate, anywhere from 30% to over 100% more than other leading brands. for their scraps.
I don't know why, but him calling that reciprocal/sawzall a chop saw bugged me. Like c'mon Coop, you're supposed to be a man's man, that means knowing the names of tools.
It is designer collectible plates for sneakerheads to add to their shoe collection . maybe some of them will get into fitness and buy even more of Nike's products . it is a win win win for Nike
Just in general, who decided on the 45lbs plate standard? Wouldn't it make more sense for a 50lbs plate standard? along with a 30lbs and 10lbs? With 50 lbs bars? That would make the math so much simpler.
Noncompetition height, overpriced, inside looks like a five-year-old trying to cook a cake… probably going to have horrible resale value. Coolness is not a relevant enough factor to justify that ridiculous price.
The looks are questionable in my eyes. I've had some Wright Equipment AMP bumper plates for 10 years now and have withstood considerable violence. Like other commenters have said, this is more greenwashing with a higher price to the consumer.
"We had order these ourselves" because Nike is too big to pay us for an "honest review" which turns into a sponsored video on our socials within the hour... By the way, Gluck cut his plates first.
Gee that inconsistent width of the Nike rubber seems like a giant red flag to me. I expected it to be called out a lot more. Love GGR but this seemed like passive propaganda..
I have some cheap bumper plates that cost around $2us per kg, I've noticed they chip easily on concrete. I have rubber matting now and a smith machine, so this shouldn't be an issue now. In the future, i may upgrade, but I'm relatively new to weight training, and investing in it is a gradual process. Here's my investment progress: 1. Used standard weights and very cheap fixed bench from Amazon. 2. Three months later and not all at once added hex dumbells and a few bumper plates. 4 rubber mats, a curl and olympic bar. 3. Upgraded bench to incline. 4. Approx 9 months after beginning training added a Force Usa G3 smith machine. Plus another 150kg of force usa steel plates, on special at 70c per kg.
You’d think a 5 seat Tesla model X wore be be cheaper than a 6 seat Model x, but it’s the opposite, costing more, yet using less seats/parts/materials.
The only problem with these weights is "Nike". My family hasn't purchased a Nike product since they hooked up with Colin Kaepernick. You do you, but I'm not giving money to them. Also, it's not surprising that the "green" recycled stuff is just a surface layer. That is, just for show, but the wokies can feel virtuous. That's what really matters, right?
I don't think I'm the only one who works out for their health. With that in mind I would really like to see reviews look into what chemicals the different rubber products are off gassing. Which are safe to be exposed to long term and which are most dangerous. The Nike ones look nice but if they will give me cancer I'll pass.

FYI, they didn’t say it on their site.
Cool.... reciprocating saw not chop saw lol all good man
Review the ATG backwards treadmill
Got my Grind 45s yesterday and they are amazing. Easiest plates to pick up off the ground
FYI, that’s a reciprocating saw, not a chop saw
"They guarantee 1% of weight variance, you can weigh it to check"...
Coop weights it... its over 2% under.
It was 44,9. 1% off of 45 is 44,55.
Just subscribed because of the name because I work out in the garage
Hardness is not a good measurement for durability. Glass is hard but will shatter.
i was kinda excited for these because i thought "oh its just excess rubber scrap that is being repurposed and they are branding it as them doing something altruistic, surely these will be a cheaper option"
nope lmao $110 for a 45lb plate, anywhere from 30% to over 100% more than other leading brands. for their scraps.
Reviews bumper plates but doesn't do a drop test? How do they bounce? Are they loud?
I have some 14 year old hitemp/rogue 10lb bumpers.. very floppy 😂
I am going to use a chopsaw pulls out sawsall
nike just needs to make some sick ass flat shoes.Litterally just make russel orhiis custom wrestling shoes official
Just in general, who decided on the 45lbs plate standard? Wouldn't it make more sense for a 50lbs plate standard? along with a 30lbs and 10lbs? With 50 lbs bars? That would make the math so much simpler.
I assume metric came first and they made the lbs match as close as possible. 20kg is 44 lbs.
at 220, i'll spray line x on slabs of concrete.
Nice bideo
I guarantee that exterior flakes and chips off after dropping those a hundred times.
Noncompetition height, overpriced, inside looks like a five-year-old trying to cook a cake… probably going to have horrible resale value. Coolness is not a relevant enough factor to justify that ridiculous price.
reciprocating saw, or sawzall. come on. not a chop. love you anyway coop!
Coop, we know you don't know tools cuz you have someone building stuff for you but that isn't a chop saw.
Please review the Bells of Steel Manticore. I need to know if it's truly compatible with Rogue's Monster accessories.
Plus, Nike is trash...
Coop needs to do a mustache review
looks like a jawbreaker....
in more ways than 1
So Harbor Freight vice? 👍? 👎?
The looks are questionable in my eyes. I've had some Wright Equipment AMP bumper plates for 10 years now and have withstood considerable violence. Like other commenters have said, this is more greenwashing with a higher price to the consumer.
This is a fraud. The interior is normal rubber from petroleum. As usual Nike is not correct with the consumers
They only claim to reuse plastic for the exterior, not fraud lol.
I think they should make plates and make them not be stupid expensive. Move more recycled materials...It's dumb that they want so much money.
Too thick for me and too pricey. But...they do look amazing
not a chop saw, a reciprocating saw.
If you make them totally metal, they are smaller and cheaper and you have local suppliers and don't have to pay for the multi billion dollar marketing
Love GGR but this seemed like passive propaganda..
what corporate freaking language
"99% on the *exterior* " how crafty
Why do companies not just use lead or something to make the plates smaller? Why do people want these massive car tires?
Lead is toxic. Some people want the plates to be large to make some lifts easier to start. It also reduces price, rubber is cheaper than metal
You’d think it would be cheaper since it’s recycled but it’s always the opposite, costing more than a normal plate smh .
You’d think a 5 seat Tesla model X wore be be cheaper than a 6 seat Model x, but it’s the opposite, costing more, yet using less seats/parts/materials.
they look like they taste good
Is it just me, or does it seem odd to review bumpers without doing much in the way of bumper specific exercises. Nobody needs bumpers to bench.
I wouldn't waste my money on anything Nike, not even from the Goodwill.
I want Nike plates so bad
the thumbnail lmao
I don't think I'm the only one who works out for their health. With that in mind I would really like to see reviews look into what chemicals the different rubber products are off gassing. Which are safe to be exposed to long term and which are most dangerous. The Nike ones look nice but if they will give me cancer I'll pass.
If Nike sneaker rubber gave you cancer, chances are you'd be surrounded by corpses.
