Yeah! The replay value of MSA Reload is higher than its 2 predecessors (MSA and MSD) thanks to its difficulty, and now I'm not feel bored at playing every stages of this game unlike before And maybe if my family will let me buy MSA Reloaded (which will be my first-ever priced game since I play f2p mostly) in my birthday, I'm gonna get hyped at playing it forever

Saw it and called my attention many years ago when it came out for mobile but I didn't want to get addicted to a gacha game and be forced to use real money for a game, then saw it again in the Nintendo Direct and instantly buyed it, its surprisingly fun and engaging, the fact that you don't move the units directly doesn't make the game easy or boring (untill you get really strong with super units 😅)
This version was made to be harder than the mobile version that was shutdown but at least you get better units pretty quick here than it was in the mobile version where most good units are behind microtransactions.
This is a blast from the past. I used to really enjoy that game!! This is a game worth playing again and again and also teaches the younger generation to maintain a balance of resource while pressing on!
And speaking of Battle Cats unite just released on the second on consoles, I think mainly for the switch though but still. And no more micro transactions for either game now, just the initial one and done purchase.
Btw if you guys are using Nintendo switch it’s better handheld cause you can play the game without buttons and just use it as a touch screen which is nice
I played Metal Slug Attack back when it was on mobile. It was a huge step down from its predecessor Metal Slug Defense. MSA in comparison was hugely predatory and intentionally meant to frustrate you by having the CPU cheat so every level was a slog, and you'd be tempted to spend money on the gacha pulling for meta units. I got so angry with the game one day that I threw my phone at the wall and broke it. That was the last day I ever played the game. In comparison, I still have Metal Slug Defense installed on my phone (albeit through a third party APK).
If you like games like this, there are also "Swords and Soldiers" and "Swords and Soldiers 2 Shawarmageddon" on Switch. I have only played the first one, but IIRC it doesn't have any grinding, as there is nothing to level up. I have heard second one is better in every way, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
This is better than the mobile version (which I also loved), for the fact that everything in the game is unlockable without having to spend more than $10 for the game itself. Takes a lot of grinding - even for experienced players. But to me that adds to the replay value. I’m hoping down the line they add ALL the original MISSIONS and ANOTHER STORY levels from the mobile ver. along with extra units like Valette and the Virtua Fighters, etc. Also, don’t hoard your medals. Spend everything you got in CALL TO ARMS and eventually you will obtain ALL of the units. The key currency in this game are the EQUIP items!
As long as this game isn’t online, then I’ll play it. Any games with 300+ characters = pay to win. But online gacha games means it’s a grind but you’ll get all the characters you want.

Bought this after seeing the review last night - I've got to say I'm really enjoying it. Lovely retro graphics, and interesting gameplay without being too demanding, easy to pick and play. And £9 is a great price point - if it had been £15 I probably wouldn't have bothered but at £9 it's only the equivalent of a 3 or 4 saveloys 😊
its a good time well worth the $10 Also if you are struggling in stage 2 make sure to get Clone Eri, shes got a HMG as her default attack real good at dealing with flyers and tons of HP and is real cheap too
I loved this game on mobile but it was hard to keep up being f2p back in the day. Personally I was hoping they had all if the events and stuff that the mobile game had. Because that would have given the game over 100 hours. I'll probably pick this up eventually
@@jmaster4941 I believe it was your standard 19.99 39.99 79.99 deals :/ but the fact that you had to get them to platinum to make them viable was too much

I know this was a mobile gacha game, but I’m glad to see the micro transactions have been removed and has been made to just be a game you pay for once and can experience it at your leisure without dumping money into it. I’ll have to pick it up when I can. Thanks for the review as always, gentlemen. Cheers!
Amazing review, I feel pretty much the same way about both the positives and the negatives aside from the controls as of course it was on mobile before. But I was heavily addicted to this game and was disappointed when it got removed. I thought it was gone for good but the announcement for this game at the Nintendo Direct certainly caught me by surprise, and I will no doubt be picking this up as this is one of the only games of the franchise where you can essentially play as an enemy faction that you have fought throughout the series, plus completely brand new units with similar appropriate sounds to go along with them. The game is definitely addictive and without needing to pay to play anymore, I can play without the worry of microtransactions needing to be purchased even though the grind is still there. But $10 US is not a bad price for this at all considering the length is indefinite for a game like this.
@@DirectorOfChaos9292 For a game with seemingly endless replay ability if you don’t mind the grind and nostalgic value for the classic gorgeous 16 bit artwork, oh yeah for sure worth it.
For people who like tower defense games, I'm sure this is a ton of fun. I just wish they'd make a new traditional Metal Slug run n gun. I'm a huge fan of the originals and beat them all on my MAME emulation. I cannot but agree with this review, this game is fun but my ... the difficulty in Mexico 8 -1 is kicking my ass right now I simply cannot pass this level! Something that I would have mentioned is that sometimes the process of upgrade all the units is boring, there should be a system to upgrade several units at the same time.

Yeah! mSA Reloaded's battle intensity is SO HIGH I can't feel the same from RTS tho-, and is more competitive than playing Battle Cats (which only has PvE)
I played this when it was the mobile game. I’ve put about 20 hours in… I don’t think I could recommend to most people. I’m a die hard MS fan and I often find myself asking why I’m still playing. You can tell it was an IAP fest and it makes the game weird to experience. You don’t have the energy gates or monetization but there’s still the insane grind. It’s a game you play while watching or doing something as you can put on auto mode and just redo level after level to get items to upgrade units. There’s some mega difficulty spikes that require you to grind. In the end… It’s not very expensive but it really is minimal gameplay. Online is hopeless as usual with these games- there’s either cheaters or those who have top tier units and will grind you to dust. The strategy ultimately is really empty as even a perfect combo will get crushed if they’re not upgraded.
I had never seen this game until the direct and bought it instantly it’s a lot of fun although I with I could unlock some of the portraits a bit quicker
I'm glad this version strips out the microtransactions that plagued the mobile version, but it sounds like the gachapon mechanic is still a central part of the game. Metal Slug Attack still appears to be a manipulative skinner box, rather than an engaging & varied action game, as a Metal Slug should be. Hard pass for me, but I'm glad players will only spend 9£ on the full package, rather than hundreds in microtransactions.
Been playing everyday. Very addictive game but I haven't felt that my progression had anything to do with strategy. I was hoping for a swords and soldiers 2 type of strategy game.
I'm one of the biggest Metal Slug fans you can meet, but this ain't for me. I wish SNK would make a REAL new Metal Slug game. That would be an instant buy from me.
When it comes to the difficulty, it is not necessary to "grind" to beat the levels, that's where the strategy comes in. The strategy turns brainless only when you grind and brute force your way with better units, at that point it's an skill issue because you are using grinding to skip the strategy part. so it's a bit silly when people say the strategy is mindless when they themselves made it mindless by not being able to strategize with what you have. You guys want strategy but don't want to think, so instead you grind to skip the strategy part and blame the game for being a mindless grind, come on man.
Have to disagree there. I feel that certain levels can definitely be achieved with strategy. Some, though, (3-3 spring too mind) need very specific units which means grinding for medals to use in the Call to Arms. I tried that level o many times with the units I had and got nowhere. It wasn't until I unlocked the Venus fly trap that eats enemies that I started making some headway. Without this unit, no strategy worked.
@@SwitchUpYt the strategy takes place in and out of battles, the game is really generous with resources (money, medals and ítems), when you spend them on units without a clear purpose you end up wasting resources on the wrong N and R units, and it's only then where you have to grind for money and items, You have to find synergy with what you got and you won't ever need to grind to finish the main story, even the blue soldier guy stays good the whole time. I say this because i finished the story and i never had to repeat the same levels to farm for stuff, you have to spend your stuff wisely I played since the Mobile game, you have to make decks that have units that work with each other and you gotta improvise with what you got.
@@huevonesunltdlol I thought I was the only 1 who got the ultimate J0ke!! BLue BasiC soldier was my KEY 2 Many ViCTories which otherwise seemed IMPOSSIBLE cuhz let's be honest the CPU CHEaTs when they can Spam out H1GH HP units that YOU CANNoT!!!
Your reviews are very pragmatic and detailed, not watching the whole thing means missing out a lot! You always make things very clear about what a game is and how it plays, I love this straight to the point style, very useful! Thanks Switchup ❤
I bought it and have been having some fun with it. But what's kinda killing it for me is I notice that the autobattle AI is much better at this game than I am. If I'm struggling with a level, it's basically just an autowin button. You don't have to use autobattle of course but it seems to kinda take the point of manual control away when the computer is much better than you.
Your own autobattle isn't always better than Manual, for a lot strategies it is much better to manually control and send your units, the auto feature is just meant for farming
I suppose people like that gacha stuff. I still think the Metal Slug Defense medals system was better. Being able to purchase the exact unit you want even if it means you have to grind more, is just much much better
Great review Glen . You are getting more professional as time goes on . I’m on the fence with this one but it’s cheap so might add it to my insane back log
I loved metal slug attack on Mobile, but something I just don't understand is how people were level 45 - 50 in less than 24 hours of the game I'm here still at low level 30, how do people already have 50s?!
havent watched the review yet but this is a pretty good game. Dont enjoy having to replay some of the easier level for resources to equip your soldiers with to increase their skills on the field but that is a relatively minor complaint. like a 4/5 8/10
Maybe you are thinking of Metal Slug Defense. In metal slug attack, there were some KOF characters but not all of them , here's just the metal slug related ones such as Leona,Whip ,Clark, Ralf and Heidern. the other ones such as Rugal, Athena and all of those were not present at all in the original metal slug attack so it's pretty safe to assume they won't be here either if there's any future updates. It was Metal Slug Defense that had lot and lots of king of fighters characters
The game is fun don’t get me wrong but my man’s not lying the grind is insane and online does t have proper matchmaking so you could play right now and come up against someone that finished t the game and got all max units
Much of the original Metal Slug team disbanded, and SNK isn’t the same studio or management it was when Metal Slug was in its heyday, as far as I know. Since MS4, they simply haven’t been able to recapture the energy of the original series and any since then have not been well received. It’s a shame, but it is what it is. In the meantime, look up Black Finger Jet. You will be incredibly excited.
More so than usual, I implore you to watch the whole review, certainly the gameplay section, rather than just looking at the score. If you know nothing of this game, getting a grasp of whether the mechanics are for you will be much more beneficial than seeing the score and judging from that.

I'm one of the biggest Metal Slug fans you can meet, but this ain't for me. I wish SNK would make a REAL new Metal Slug game. That would be an instant buy from me.
Looks like we're missing the many broken characters.
Any word on a physical release?
Nice review looks very addictive
I'm still waiting for metal slug tactics. Supposedly comes out this year. Still waiting though...
That doesn’t look half bad, but heavy RNG scares me a little. Cheers for the review!
Is this the same as the first metal slug defense???
I say this because i finished the story and i never had to repeat the same levels to farm for stuff, you have to spend your stuff wisely
I played since the Mobile game, you have to make decks that have units that work with each other and you gotta improvise with what you got.
The only thing I like less than a rouge-like, deck building, survival-craft game is a tower defense game.
I look forward to your super monkey ball review. I never played it but it looked fun
So I played this originally on mobile and if I recall, microtransactions were a thing with it being a gatcha game.
Is it the case here?
No, there are no microtransactions. The gatcha mechanic uses in-game currency instead now.
@@SwitchUpYt Ah wonderful, thank you 😄
Your reviews are very pragmatic and detailed, not watching the whole thing means missing out a lot! You always make things very clear about what a game is and how it plays, I love this straight to the point style, very useful! Thanks Switchup ❤
I'm not really into Tower defense games but this looks pretty neat. Might wait on a sale.
We need a new Metal Slug apart from collections or tower defense or tactical games.
I hadn't tried it. That's interesting to know.
Played the mobile version in their time. So nostalgic.
Great review Glen . You are getting more professional as time goes on . I’m on the fence with this one but it’s cheap so might add it to my insane back log
Cheers mate. Hope you're well. Glen
@@SwitchUpYt I’m good mate thanks , keep up the good work
I Love Metal Slug but I never was a fan of this style, thanks for the review Glen.
The mobile version got hard but i never had to buy units earned them in game good times
I loved metal slug attack on Mobile, but something I just don't understand is how people were level 45 - 50 in less than 24 hours of the game
I'm here still at low level 30, how do people already have 50s?!
This gives me a good idea. Sounds fun, hard as hell, but a good mind racking time😅. If it goes on sale in getting it for clash of clans feeling.
Sounds and plays like Battle Cats on mobile, with a metal Slug makeover.
To be fair they had a collaboration when this was a mobile game.
havent watched the review yet but this is a pretty good game. Dont enjoy having to replay some of the easier level for resources to equip your soldiers with to increase their skills on the field but that is a relatively minor complaint. like a 4/5 8/10
Wish SNK make another metal slug anthology of all titles except the 3d game for switch console..
Does it have the characters from king of fighters?
Yes Leona is n there
Maybe you are thinking of Metal Slug Defense.
Looks really good!
Very good slept on gem they made here...lots of fun, they really had something here.
It feels like they ported the mobile version over but didn't balance out the grinding of the gotcha mechanics.
The game is fun don’t get me wrong but my man’s not lying the grind is insane and online does t have proper matchmaking so you could play right now and come up against someone that finished t the game and got all max units
Im happy its not mtc back in the day, the ssr waifus were so expensive to get but were fun too play
Nice visuals but not sure about the gameplay... I am gonna wait for Tactics. 😅
I wonder why they have such aversion to the idea of doing another actual run n gun metal slug.
I feel that Dotemu's tactical game was something everyone was expecting, hope they still release that... this is something I'd avoid.
Great review!
