If you know nothing of this game, getting a grasp of whether the mechanics are for you will be much more beneficial than seeing the score and judging from that. Is Metal Slug Attack Reloaded worth getting on the Nintendo Switch? Well, let's find out....

Happy gaming! Glen
This game is tougher than I thought it would be. But I love it. The replay value is high.
Yeah, it's pretty damn hard! Glen
It's based on a mobile game designed to never end, it's not surprising.
Yeah! The replay value of MSA Reload is higher than its 2 predecessors (MSA and MSD) thanks to its difficulty, and now I'm not feel bored at playing every stages of this game unlike before
And maybe if my family will let me buy MSA Reloaded (which will be my first-ever priced game since I play f2p mostly) in my birthday, I'm gonna get hyped at playing it forever
This being shadow dropped out of nowhere was a welcoming surprise. Theres still so many characters missing from this version. The events from the mobile game had a lot of charm hope they make a return
If I may take a hot take.... it's already really fun. Doesn't need too much added to be perfect, except more offline ways to get medals.
Bought it as soon they announced it. I really like it, its kinda grindy but it's fun and a Waifu collectaton. Once you beat the Mexico stages you get access to S tier units and the game completely changes. A very good game for switch and to pass time.
When you put it like it makes it sound like Fio isn’t enough waifu to carry the game by herself already.
Everyone knows that’s wrong.
Saw it and called my attention many years ago when it came out for mobile but I didn't want to get addicted to a gacha game and be forced to use real money for a game, then saw it again in the Nintendo Direct and instantly buyed it, its surprisingly fun and engaging, the fact that you don't move the units directly doesn't make the game easy or boring (untill you get really strong with super units 😅)
Yeah, it works pretty well. Just a bit 'grindy'
Reminds me of Battle Cats, and I enjoyed that when it came out. I'll be checking this game out.
This was my thought as well. That game sucked me in for quite awhile.
Metal Slug Defense which is the game that came out before this one had a crossover event with Battle Cats.
And speaking of Battle Cats unite just released on the second on consoles, I think mainly for the switch though but still. And no more micro transactions for either game now, just the initial one and done purchase.
There are people who dont watch the whole review? Blasphemy 😂😂
Haha, the watch time average suggests so, unfortunately! Glen
You can watch it at 1.5x speed.
I know, I can't stop a video until I've heard a "Happy gaming" or "See yaaaaa"!
Ohhh I live for those "Seeee yas" 🤣🤣 Mark can hit such a note lol
It's pretty common tbh. It'll never be a 100% unfortunately!
Just returned from a 8 day cruise. Trying to you catch up on 8 days of videos. Had fun but sure do miss these videos.
Hey Glen, I feel like you always do a great job at giving those hard to rate game a rating that fits and explaining it to us. Thank you!
That means a lot. Thank you. Glen
It’s really fun and definitely worth it for the price. Dumb fun, easy pick up and go (literally)
Definitely!!
Hell yeah! Hope I'll have a chance to buy that game soon
I don’t care about waifus but i love the pixel art style and the new original designs make me wonder how they would look in a classic Metal slug game
Im saving my love for Metal Slug to play Metal Slug Tactics
Both this and this are great spinoffs, at least you liked Tactics more while I like Attack Reloaded more
This feels like nostalgic . I missed the times where i used my rebel army deck , to reach into chief warrant officer.
i love how complete this review is am planing to buy this game on Steam but still found this review super useful as the POW from metal slug would say...THANK YOU!!
Was on the fence about getting this game, but I'm glad, i held out and waited for your review, it as really increased the hype i had for it ever since i waw it in the direct, i'll pick it up ASAP, Thanks for the good work, Keep it up, Really appreciate it
This version was made to be harder than the mobile version that was shutdown but at least you get better units pretty quick here than it was in the mobile version where most good units are behind microtransactions.
You also get support units that are used with the ZL button.
Commenting for channel visibility. Cheers SwitchUp! 😊
Thanks for the visit❤
No worries. I'll always be here and looking forward to more SwitchUp content 😊
I didn't play this game enough while it was out on Mobile! I actually tried to download it again about a year ago, excited to see it's back.
Hell ya now there’s now way for them to take it from us
I used to play this game when it first came out on mobile and I remember I really loved it, but then stopped playing. So glad to see it's now on consoles. I'm purchasing this bad boy right now.
Certainly interesting, I'm glad it's cheaper than I expected, tho I still think I'll wait for now and pick it up later
Ngl, a game I have wanted to see on any platform, just glad to see it on switch. 🎉
If you like games like this, there are also "Swords and Soldiers" and "Swords and Soldiers 2 Shawarmageddon" on Switch. I have only played the first one, but IIRC it doesn't have any grinding, as there is nothing to level up. I have heard second one is better in every way, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
Maybe a balance patch is needed from the sound of things?
Thanks for the honest review Glen. 👍
I saw my go-to melee attacker Leona from KoF and I'm already sold. This was a welcome surprise since I loved the mobile game.
As long as this game isn’t online, then I’ll play it. Any games with 300+ characters = pay to win. But online gacha games means it’s a grind but you’ll get all the characters you want.
Btw if you guys are using Nintendo switch it’s better handheld cause you can play the game without buttons and just use it as a touch screen which is nice
This is a blast from the past. I used to really enjoy that game!! This is a game worth playing again and again and also teaches the younger generation to maintain a balance of resource while pressing on!
Great review!
Nice review looks very addictive
I look forward to your super monkey ball review. I never played it but it looked fun
I used to play it on Mobile. It was my favorite. Glad it came to switch
Amazing review, I feel pretty much the same way about both the positives and the negatives aside from the controls as of course it was on mobile before. But I was heavily addicted to this game and was disappointed when it got removed. I thought it was gone for good but the announcement for this game at the Nintendo Direct certainly caught me by surprise, and I will no doubt be picking this up as this is one of the only games of the franchise where you can essentially play as an enemy faction that you have fought throughout the series, plus completely brand new units with similar appropriate sounds to go along with them. The game is definitely addictive and without needing to pay to play anymore, I can play without the worry of microtransactions needing to be purchased even though the grind is still there. But $10 US is not a bad price for this at all considering the length is indefinite for a game like this.
10 dollars is definitely a fair price
@@DirectorOfChaos9292 For a game with seemingly endless replay ability if you don’t mind the grind and nostalgic value for the classic gorgeous 16 bit artwork, oh yeah for sure worth it.
I loved this game on mobile but it was hard to keep up being f2p back in the day. Personally I was hoping they had all if the events and stuff that the mobile game had. Because that would have given the game over 100 hours. I'll probably pick this up eventually
Yup no mtx just grinding it out which is fun
Don't think I'll be picking this one up by my goodness the art looks so good! Lots of nostalgia just watching the review
First time I ever heard of this version of Metal Slug. It looks interesting. I'll probably pick it up on a discount
Man I love the dynamic sticth. It sucks so hard that the colour shown here is not available in the EU.
For people who like tower defense games, I'm sure this is a ton of fun. I just wish they'd make a new traditional Metal Slug run n gun. I'm a huge fan of the originals and beat them all on my MAME emulation. Would love to add a new traditional installment to my growing list of 'neo-retro' games like Shredder's Revenge, Double Dragon Gaiden, and Sonic Mania...
I love that it's with exact same artwork, love it
Any word on a physical release?
Looks really good!
its a good time well worth the $10
Also if you are struggling in stage 2 make sure to get Clone Eri, shes got a HMG as her default attack real good at dealing with flyers and tons of HP and is real cheap too
...and unlocking that blue soldier's dodge skill will makes its easiness double
I played Metal Slug Attack back when it was on mobile. It was a huge step down from its predecessor Metal Slug Defense. MSA in comparison was hugely predatory and intentionally meant to frustrate you by having the CPU cheat so every level was a slog, and you'd be tempted to spend money on the gacha pulling for meta units. I got so angry with the game one day that I threw my phone at the wall and broke it. That was the last day I ever played the game. In comparison, I still have Metal Slug Defense installed on my phone (albeit through a third party APK).
I had metal slug defense I didn't know they had attack it sucks the app never received any updates. But it's cool that it's now on switch
How you defeat Egypt 3 or 4, that have that flying bat?
Grinding levels up like a madman
On of the best games of our childhood,if not the best on arcade machines!
Bring on the grind!!
Looks like we're missing the many broken characters.
Played the mobile version in their time. So nostalgic.
10:51 Unless there are no leveling up systems in this version, then they should unlock when you get to certain level thresholds, like the mobile game this was based on (from my research).
You can only reach level 10 for units at first. So im guessing its a player level(your personal level, not the units) threshhold
@@DirectorOfChaos9292 It is player level, I made it to 12 and was able to level units up to 12 (same with the support stuff and skills).
I'm not really into Tower defense games but this looks pretty neat. Might wait on a sale.
That doesn’t look half bad, but heavy RNG scares me a little. Cheers for the review!
I had never seen this game until the direct and bought it instantly it’s a lot of fun although I with I could unlock some of the portraits a bit quicker
This gives me a good idea. Sounds fun, hard as hell, but a good mind racking time😅. If it goes on sale in getting it for clash of clans feeling.
yes, they cranked (get it?) the difficulty.
i hope they keep collab unit
I'm glad you took my hint and reviewed this one. Never really put much time into the series, but I love me a bit of tower defense so I'm happy this one is decent, and those pixel graphics look great.
Yeah! mSA Reloaded's battle intensity is SO HIGH I can't feel the same from RTS tho-, and is more competitive than playing Battle Cats (which only has PvE)
Is this the same as the first metal slug defense???
This is better than the mobile version (which I also loved), for the fact that everything in the game is unlockable without having to spend more than $10 for the game itself.
Takes a lot of grinding - even for experienced players. But to me that adds to the replay value.
I’m hoping down the line they add ALL the original MISSIONS and ANOTHER STORY levels from the mobile ver. along with extra units like Valette and the Virtua Fighters, etc.
Also, don’t hoard your medals. Spend everything you got in CALL TO ARMS and eventually you will obtain ALL of the units.
The key currency in this game are the EQUIP items!
Sounds like it might be a better choice to pick up on pc. If highlighting individuals with the mouse is an option.
I cannot but agree with this review, this game is fun but my ... the difficulty in Mexico 8 -1 is kicking my ass right now I simply cannot pass this level!
Something that I would have mentioned is that sometimes the process of upgrade all the units is boring, there should be a system to upgrade several units at the same time.
BTW any tip for 8 - 1 would be helpfull
Did you pass it finally? It's a pattern that the G4Me only lets you get so far before you HAVE to reach a certain lvl for all of your characters to progress. A tip is to put it in auto mode and if your line up fails; restructure it@@raggstukov
I’m sold on the game, cheap enough to picke up on a whim, so I will be playing it this weekend!
Remember playing this on mobile ❤🎉
Very good slept on gem they made here...lots of fun, they really had something here.
Been playing everyday. Very addictive game but I haven't felt that my progression had anything to do with strategy. I was hoping for a swords and soldiers 2 type of strategy game.
seems amazing!
Bought this after seeing the review last night - I've got to say I'm really enjoying it. Lovely retro graphics, and interesting gameplay without being too demanding, easy to pick and play. And £9 is a great price point - if it had been £15 I probably wouldn't have bothered but at £9 it's only the equivalent of a 3 or 4 saveloys 😊
So I played this originally on mobile and if I recall, microtransactions were a thing with it being a gatcha game.
Is it the case here?
No, there are no microtransactions. The gatcha mechanic uses in-game currency instead now.
@@SwitchUpYt Ah wonderful, thank you 😄
Nice visuals but not sure about the gameplay... I am gonna wait for Tactics. 😅
The mobile version got hard but i never had to buy units earned them in game good times
Had the mobile game and sadly shut down it was fun but the cost for medals was insane.
How much were medals in the original?
@@jmaster4941 I believe it was your standard 19.99 39.99 79.99 deals :/ but the fact that you had to get them to platinum to make them viable was too much
Sounds and plays like Battle Cats on mobile, with a metal Slug makeover.
To be fair they had a collaboration when this was a mobile game.
When they announced this I thought it was going to be a port of the mobile version. But I think it’s a better idea to have it purchasable and do the rest with in game currency. This game was good specially if you like to control an army but you don’t want to be bothered with rts gameplay.
Omg my coolest battle cats 😁 I will pick this up
I got upset that at some point it was about pouring in game currency into new units and improvements, and jjust leave the auto mode and speed up enabled
Wish SNK make another metal slug anthology of all titles except the 3d game for switch console..
Does it have the characters from king of fighters?
Yes Leona is n there
Maybe you are thinking of Metal Slug Defense.
In metal slug attack, there were some KOF characters but not all of them , here's just the metal slug related ones such as Leona,Whip ,Clark, Ralf and Heidern.
the other ones such as Rugal, Athena and all of those were not present at all in the original metal slug attack so it's pretty safe to assume they won't be here either if there's any future updates.
It was Metal Slug Defense that had lot and lots of king of fighters characters
Just in fact . This game was not meant to be played in consoles , but for mobile I hope they do sometimes made that.
Not my type of game but very clever
Already bought it. Roughly 8 years ago the game was already available on Android phones and that's when I played it first.
It's like Counter-side. I like it.
makes me miss swords and soldiers
Great review Glen . You are getting more professional as time goes on . I’m on the fence with this one but it’s cheap so might add it to my insane back log
Cheers mate. Hope you're well. Glen
@@SwitchUpYt I’m good mate thanks , keep up the good work
If anyone has ever played swords and soldiers (a wiiware game) its similar to it
It's... different from what I expected, but to each their own I guess.
We need a new Metal Slug apart from collections or tower defense or tactical games.
I love Metal Slug! Gimmeeee! 😋
Im happy its not mtc back in the day, the ssr waifus were so expensive to get but were fun too play
I Love Metal Slug but I never was a fan of this style, thanks for the review Glen.
I just wish they made another standard one already... I mean other 2D games are still being made.
The game is great until you hit a wall and have to grind for several hours of monotony. Otherwise, it's fun and fulfilling.
Your reviews are very pragmatic and detailed, not watching the whole thing means missing out a lot! You always make things very clear about what a game is and how it plays, I love this straight to the point style, very useful! Thanks Switchup ❤
this game is ridiculous hard
havent watched the review yet but this is a pretty good game. Dont enjoy having to replay some of the easier level for resources to equip your soldiers with to increase their skills on the field but that is a relatively minor complaint. like a 4/5 8/10
I love this game! I can't put it down!
I played this over 10 years ago for free 😅 on the iPhone. This explains why I can't re-download anymore 😕
Probably not for me but thanks for the review.
I feel that Dotemu's tactical game was something everyone was expecting, hope they still release that... this is something I'd avoid.
So it’s basically swords and soldiers
The only thing I like less than a rouge-like, deck building, survival-craft game is a tower defense game.
For what this game is at least it's cheap and it seems to work well.
Honestly, for a switch game that's all I really ask for.
