I admit I am quite afraid of bears but love the outdoors, and I always travel alone. I am more afraid of them attacking me in a tent at night, so I sleep in my truck. Perhaps, I will become more used to them as I encounter them more frequently. I did see one about 3 miles off Highway 101 in Kalaloch in June.
Top 5 in 5 Sorry not gonna blow my spots😂. I will give you a general hint. River valleys on the Western side of Olympics. Best time to go is right now through June and then they move around and go to high country.
Top 5 in 5 just get out there alone be very quite while you hike at the right times (mornings or evening) in areas that aren’t huge tourist traps. Bears eat grass and berries. In early spring/summer look for them along the rivers in the alders.. During the late summer fall look for them where berries grow. Some common places I have seen bears that are tourist traps I dont mind telling you are Hurricane Hill, trails around Sol Duc falls, Hoh rainforest.
Follower Z No you don’t need bear spray. If it was grizzly country I would say carry spray or a gun. Look up bear attacks in Western WA and you wont find many cases. Most places in the Olympics the bears will spook easy and run away. If you see one just remain calm and give the animal lots of space. If it starts acting hostile towards you than make yourself big, yell, throw rocks. What ever you got to do to get through the encounter.
Really nice bear captures here. Your timing was perfect to be able to get into that area and be around wildlife. Awesome!
Did the bears ever approach your camping spots? I am considering camping with family in Olympic and even specifically here.
