It was 30 years ago that legendary folk rock singer BOB DYLAN visited the Twin Cities with his “Never Ending Tour”. On that clear, chilly night on April 21, 1993, Dylan and his band treated his north Louisiana fans to two solid hours of his top 40 hits, blues standards, and country at the Monroe Civic Center Theater. That year’s first leg of the Never Ending Tour (named for Dylan’s endless touring schedule) started on February 5th in Dublin, Ireland followed by six consecutive shows at Hammersmith Apollo in London, England. The short tour run ended up on February 25th at the Maysfield Leisure Centre in Northern Ireland. Dylan then flew back over the Atlantic Ocean to perform a nine date tour leg in the US. But a twist of fate caused the legendary performer and his backing band-guitarists John Jackson and Bucky Baxter, Tony Garnier on bass, and drummer Winston Watson-to end up in Monroe, Louisiana the day before the end of this leg with an appearance on the WWL/Ray-Ban Stage at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Dylan took a short break but returned to touring over North America in late summer with a thirty-one date tour of the US and Canada with their opening act, Santana. The artists, bands, and crew traveled to twenty-nine cities in fifteen states and two Canadian provinces. The 1993 tour finally came to an end for that year after eighty shows, the second shortest leg of Dylan’s Never Ending Tour.
