Jesus... this is a NEXT LEVEL stuff, damn! So glad I own the Hydrasynth. Just so damn awesome synth, just keep on giving. Thanks for this video. Subscribed.
Boom.... head blown!! Your videos make me realise just how little I know about Synthesis. Keep up the excellent work, every second with you I learn something new :)
Very cool thanks for sharing your insight. I can't abide by using Facebook and that makes me feel like I miss out on a lot of great content from the official facebook group, so I'm always glad for content like this that *is* available.
Love and highly appreciate yr insight and how you present it. One thing I keep trying to place is yr accent. I should know this, but the way you say “on” particularly reminds me of a few dialects. I’m thinking it’s the “port city accent” which I think applies to river cities as well…anyways.Cheers and thanks!
Neat stuff! I really love these technique videos, they really opened up the possibilities with HS, as before my attempts to play with the mutators without understanding them usually just resulted in noise. I was trying to figure out how to do phase distortion (PD) style synthesis (in addition to the PWM/ASM mutators that kinda already do this). Ideally you could pick the phase wave (phasor) that can be thought of as a ramp-up/ramp-down/saw that selects which individual sample from a waveform is being played at a time freely yourself and then mutate this wave. My best effort so far that gives some nice wavefold'ey sounds works by trying to stop the phase of Osc1 with "FM" (=PM), and then modulating the modulator. It works like this: - Osc 2 sawtooth -12st - Only Osc 1 output from mixer - Osc 1 any waveform - Mutant 2 FM with src from Mutant 3/4, 128 fully wet, around 70 depth. Tune depth so that the waveform is as silent as possible, for some reason it is around 70. This should result in almost silence for Middle C and around there. For some reason it doesn't work for upper notes, maybe some bandlimiting stuff I don't understand anything about? Now: Mutant 3: any kind of FM or other operation. For example FM from Osc3. Fully wet. With depth 0-7 the waveform output from Osc1 path now resembles Osc3 waveform. Higher depths gives wavefolding like harmonics stuff. Or maybe it's kind of a Osc Sync? Brutal but nice sounds. Reminds me of Vital/Serum. Since modulating phase with -12st sawtooth results in silence, does it imply that the phase is implemented with a ramp down saw? Or is it just some other reason I don't understand? Why is depth 70 the best and not 128? I just tried using PhaseDiff to invert the saw and then apply it in a similar fashion, and actually it too results in silence with some tuning of the depth and dry/wet. Any ideas for how to get closer to being able to select and distort the phasor? Or maybe there could be another mutant included that provides access to the phasor? After realizing that modifying the phasor wave and hence performing PD can be thought of as a generalization that can be used to accomplish Osc Sync, PWM, Serum Warp modes, ..., to me it seems like a nice way to accomplish many new things! Bitwig Grid and some VST called Wiggle that I haven't tried are the only ones I've found that have something like this so far.
Nice tips, Fluxwithit! I am preparing my mind for the arrival of my Hydrasynth Keyboard. Your video's are really expanding my understanding of synthesis. Thank you kindly! Would you be able to show us some cool tricks with the ring mod? Maybe you have a video already, I didn't see it though.
Niiiiice! Very similar indeed. Sounds insane. I need to watch through your vids. Thanks!.. and thanks again for jumping over to help me with finding my arp settings. :-)
Your sound design sessions are always interresting, thanks. You demonstrate ASM synths are very powerful. I'm about to buy one but in my opinion, one caracteristic is missing : the possibility to import user samples. I know we can import audio signal through the Ring Modulator module, but it's not the same. My wish would have been to use user sample inside the Wavelist. Another point too, one idea for a future video ?? !! : do you know if its possible to simulate Steiner-Parker filter response ?
Yes , that filter is already in there. And the drive parameter (primarily post filter) is similar to what brute factor is doing. Alternatively you can send the headphone output into a mod input to get that more specific aspect. As far as importing waves . It’s not a sampler and it’s not sample based. So that doesn’t work. However there are literally billions of combinations you can come up with using the waves already present.
@@Fluxwithit Yes, Ken, it isn't a sampler ! But, as far as I know, the Waldorf Quantum isn't a sampler either and though, you can import user waves inside wavetables and/or create user's wavetable. The Iridium allows it too. So, it wouldn't have been an obstacle to add this in the Hydrasynth. Despite that fact, the Hydrasynth seems to be a great synth, as that's you've demonstrated all along your videos. Please Ken, could you tell us what is the filter name in the Hydra which is a Steiner-Parker ? Thanks a lot.
@@liviou2004 the iridium wavetable engine is very different in design to the hydrasynth engine. Not at all an apples to apples comparison. As for the filters . I’m not in front of the unit right now but they are labeled pretty obviously in the engine . I wanna say SP ?
Thanks for a great lesson. You mentioned the patch is available? While the topic was certainly interesting, and the viewing helped in general skills like mod's and macro's (your content is excellent), I don't know if my attempt is correct - seem to be missing some 'bite'.
Definitely clipping more in the video feed. Synth was a bit too loud sorry about that!
I had to plug in my stereo to crank up the volume enough to hear your voice! :D
The sound around minute 39:00 is sooooo beautiful. Love it!

Thanks Flux! Myself and other Hydrasynth owners enjoyed your Master Class. I will spend hours digging into this technique.

this is fucking brilliant and opens up yet another layer in this crazy ass synth. cheers

There's an SP HP, BP, and LP filter, no Arturia Brute Factor.
