4th Platoon D Co 2-5 IN 3/1 AD
Camera is on my gunner, firefight was around four hours long involving three enemy SAF sections, one RPG team (who we killed a month later), and an 82mm mortar team. The camera died about halfway through before it started getting really dicey, the Taliban only stoped engaging after we called in four A-10 gun runs on their positions in the green zones.
Just remember: A bullet may have a name written on it. On a 40mm it just says: To whom it may concern.

From this mounted gun you see the recoil? It was made to really push the distance it can travel. Versus if you had a portable 40mm launcher it'll kind of lob it if you plan on firing far away

Machine Gunner here, max range is 2212 meters, the area target (essentially where you can effectively engage a generally large area with the weapon) is 2212 meters. To effectively engage those three guys he was targeting though, they would have to be within 1500 meters (point target)

One truly miraculous weapon. Almost like there is never enough ammo or just one will do. Just lobbing 40mm grenades 2 kilometers. Never shot one but have shot a 40mm. They are one cool round.

You don't realize how impersonal war is until you watch stuff like this. Most firefights seem like each side is lobbing at the other at 1k-2k yards just hoping for a hit. Most the time you probably don't even know if you've killed someone

This almost seems archaic. We can land on Mars and this is the best we can come up with for battle lol. At the very least, have the gun fixed at an angle so you only need to make small adjustments the next time you fire. Weapons manufacturers are loving this. Fire 100 rounds to get several hits at best.

You mostly bracket in a target with the mk19. The sights aren’t exactly necessary. The rounds actually travel slow enough you can follow with your eyes.

i’m really late but what keeps falling is used just used for the range, im only machine gun certified so it would suck if it kept falling for me, but most of these guys do this for a living it comes natural at this point so they pretty much just know where to aim because you can see the 40 mike mikes going down range

Pretty sure that’s what the shields in front of the ammo box are for.
I could be wrong, but it appears the operator's back is shielded. If the operator felt it necessary, they could turn their back towards the enemy while reloading.

Mk-19 can fire out to 2200m (google) small arms fire is hardly accurate at 300m and that's being generous. he was relatively safe even from a sniper getting a perfect shot off seeing as the only high ground was miles away. he probably felt relatively safe, since he knows those limits better than most.

I've forget the official name, but those little black discs actually cut into an RPG and disable the warhead, and the armor on the Humvee just receives a nice black scorching. I imagine that it might still be rather frightening to be hit by one, though.
Range is 1500-1700 meters at 3:40 in the video. Seven seconds between firing weapon and hearing explosion. If you account for the projectile velocity to target (750 m/s) and the speed of sound (343 m/s), approximately 2 seconds of the seven is spent by the projectile traveling 1500 meters. The remaining five are the speed of sound from explosion site to the operator of the MK19. This approximation does not account for deceleration of the projectile over distance, or the variation of speed of sound by temperature

they dont have a whole lot of maintenance ability for small things like that there, and there is a ton of wear on them. i think here is supposed to be a spring to keep it either up or down, but it is clearly worn out.
I've fire a couple and never had that issue. I think maybe his was a bit out of service, no fault of the operator but a fault of the supply SGT who sent it out.

Roger that. I remember watching an alley as I was guarding our flank in the middle of Ramadi, Iraq. Soon after we started getting shot at one of my legs started shaking uncontrollably and it wouldn't stop. I kept my weapon on the alley, I didn't feel all that scared, but my leg just shook for a few minutes. That was crazier than the indirect fire and bullets.

dakotagau Also, a camera can't really do justice as to what he's actually seeing. It's completely possible to see someone at that distance cause your eyes can focus really well in comparison to a camera that has had a static zoom.
I'd imagine these guys also spend a lot less time looking at up close computer monitors and have their eyes better used to looking at ranges/distance than most modern civilians
