Can Russell Wilson keep Fields off the field? | Kurt Warner Breaks Down the Steelers Game Tape

  • One of the biggest questions during the preseason has been who will be the starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers. We all know that Russell Wilson has been named the starter, so this season, I'll be watching to see if he can hold onto the position. Can he elevate his game back to the level he was at in Seattle, and can he hold off Justin Fields? Let's take a look at what we saw just in the preseason in this offense.
So, that's Russell Wilson in a nutshell right now. He's a guy focused on pure progression, getting the ball out of his hands quickly, and making completions rather than pushing the ball down the field. This approach leads to fewer mistakes or big turnovers, which we saw last year-more completions, good stats, playing to the defense, and avoiding mistakes. But to me, that's not who Russell Wilson was in Seattle, so it's something to watch for this year. Who is Russell Wilson as a quarterback? Is that approach good enough with Pittsburgh this year to win football games, or will there come a time when they decide they need more big plays and make the move to Justin Fields? #russellwilson #steelers #nfl

Russell Wilson's deep throws were always a threat in Seattle. It scares defenses and keeps them honest. He needs to get that courage back and let it rip again

It's usually the opposite. You have to scare them with the run or screens, play actions, etc, then it opens up the deep ball.

*The Arthur Smith Offense can be scary. It's much like the Shannahan/McVay system with more emphasis on physicality and usage of the TEs. In Tennessee as the OC Arthur Smith led the Titans with Tannehill at QB to a Top5 Offense in 2019 an 2020. That team had AJ Brown at WR. The Steelers have George Pickens. Very similar players. He also had Henry at RB and no Najee Harris is not Derek Henry, but they also have RB Jaylen Warren who is a quick, explosive, back with over 700 rush yards on 5.2 ypc, and over 60 receptions in passing game. But the Titans OC did not have a TE like Pat Frieremuth, or that Steeler Defense with Watt, Highsmith, Queen, Minka, and Cam Heyward. Nor would anyone mistake Ryan Tannehill for Russell Wilson. That Steelers team is dangerous and very talented. I know this considering I'm a Joe Burrow Bengals fan. Never fails*

I like the positive light this video shines on Russ. My concern is that his “decisiveness” seems more like taking the easy way out. Often his quick throws are just the underneath check downs that are open before the play has a chance to even develop. Defenses will give you that all day long.

To start the season, it's good enough if Russell Wilson takes the quick easy throws until the young OLine improves their pass blocking. He isn't getting any time to scan the field, yet - but he will. There's a lot of talent on that Oline once they get healthy and start working together. Till then, just run the ball more often.
What's more important is fewer three-and- outs so the D remains fresh and can do their good work. The flashy stuff will come later as the season goes on.

    Issues I see with RW.
    1. Both in and out of the pocket he is not as mobile as once was. That used to buy him time in making his progressions. 2. He is only 5’11” and cannot see over the lineman. And being less mobile, he can’t move around and use throwing lanes to see downfield. I think that’s why he’s constantly checking off quickly. 3. Doesn’t have the arm strength he once did and he is not a really a threat to run anymore.
Just being short and not mobile is a bad combination to have with a young offensive line.

Wow! did you have to be so harsh. Tomlin took the Steelers to 2 Super bowls and won one of them in my book that's a pretty damn successful coaching career. Regardless of some thinking that he inherited a Bill Cowher well developed team, Tomlin still had to go out there under all that pressure and perform as a head coach in hard fought seasons with many egos and in a tough division to boot and he still got them to the big game twice. There have been many coaches that have had a lot of talent around them that they didn't necessarily develop take Dallas for instance they have had a lot of talented players and coaches but haven't been to a Super bowl since 1995.

I understand that parity, rules changes, the big money has changed the nature of the game somewhat. But I think that Mike Tomlin either needs to set a championship trajectory or leave or be fired. Every day that goes by that he fails to build a high efficiency offense is just another day further behind the NFL's best.

    5 and 12…
The Steelers have a new cook, three new quarterbacks, arguably the toughest schedule in the entire NFL for 2024.. I doubt that all the players even know each other’s names, yet, let alone their tendencies, abilities, and mindset..
The last eight games of the season or something I have never heard of. They play two games each with their rivals, Baltimore, Cleveland, Cincinnati, all of whom have their established quarterbacks that have been with their teams and no the system..
to finish that tall order, they have to play two teams that have recently won the Super Bowl, Philadelphia and Kansas City..
it is very possible that Pittsburgh could go winless in their last eight games of the season, especially if they have not done well in the first half of the season, their motivation may be a little lower if they are 4 and 5 through the first nine games..
we know what Russell has/had. We know what Fields is.. that means all the other teams know what their tendencies and abilities and weaknesses are. It won’t be all that difficult for opposing teams to prep the Defense four games against the Steelers…
this is going to be Mike Tomlin‘s first losing season. Tom on inherited a Super Bowl team, and he did well for a few years while he had big Ben.
but recently, we have a team built by Mike Tomlin, a defensive, minded coach..
I would like to see Tomelin use the gaff On Russell early in the season, and put Allen in there as QB.. Alan, who is the quarterback that most impressed me in preseason in the limited time he was given the ball..
But I know from Pittsburgh history, being a fan since the early 1970s, and living in Pittsburgh, that the owners and the coaches of the Steelers tend to stick with some players just a little too long like slash.. Kordell Stewart, Mark Malone, Cliff Stoudt.. Kenny Pickett.. Byron Leftwich ,And a few others that I can’t even remember their names.
Mike Tomlin is no Bill Cowher at drafting players..
I think this is probably going to be Mike Tomlin’s last year as head coach. He will easily get a job as color analyst for one of the big networks. He’s a good talker.

In fact, it almost seems like he was cultivating a quality statistical line instead of learning how to win. You know, like Kurt talked about how he sought a completion over ACTUALLY reading the play and making an organic decision.
Kurt is brilliant in his breakdown, and also a great teacher. But he will never, ever make it sound like he is trashing a player. But after watching his breakdown of the Broncos 5th game last year, then a later breakdown, it was undeniable. Russel Wilson can't read and react very well and subsequently negates quality play calling because he can't execute them. The throw to right WR when the read would be Pickett in the slant, not letting the play develop is Kurt "trashing," Wilson's play in his (Kurt's) gracious and super kind style.
If you understand football, and understand who Kurt Warner is, then this video is damning to Russel Wilson. Especially since this is pretty much the same thing we saw last year. I do think we'll see a lot of quick throws in Denver with Bo Nix-I mean that's exactly what Bo Nix did in college-but I don't think Payton caused the shift in Russell. Keep in mind, Payton obviously hated Russell by the end. I think RW wanted to become a true pocket passer in order to protect his body, which meant not only that he wouldn't scramble as often, but also he'd get rid of the ball quicker rather than run out of the pocket and make a throw. He's never been a great anticipation guy, so, before, extending the play meant he could see a guy open and then throw it. But, now that he can't/doesn't want to do that as often, he's getting sacked more ... and because he's gotten sacked more, he's started getting rid of it very quickly. That said, I don't think he's at a Derek Carr level of "get it to the check down as the first read"
