- Looking through Baotong Temple in Wuhan, China led to some random encounters.
Starting off in the suburbs, we head across the Yangtze River towards Baotong Buddhist temple. Baotong is a Buddhist temple located on the south hillside of Mount Hong, in Wuchang District of Wuhan, Hubei, China. It is one of the "Four Buddhist Temples" in Wuhan.

Watching from rural South Africa, I so enjoy these videos. Thanks so much for posting them. Good luck for the AB game against Fiji
Ah cheers man, yeah makes a change of pace from the rugby stuff!
One thing I love about these vids is how the humour shines through. Brilliantly biting sarcasm and irony.
A really fascinating insight into everyday life in Wuhan. Thank you so much, these videos are excellent. And so is TwoCents, of course.
@@johnkinsey7334 cheers man yeah that's the kind of thing I was hoping to share 😁
I love these videos man. I just discovered your channel and I’m obsessed. Keep them coming 👍
Cheers man yeah more to come!
I love these videos 😂 it’s so funny, you’re treated like a celebrity sometimes! Your wife must find it all hilarious.
Yeah she has a few chuckles that's for sure! 😂
Came over here from your rugby channel - these vids are great - its nice to see inside China and what its really like!
@@Hibernia63 ah cheers man! Yeah I lived there for quite a few years during my 20s and we still go back to visit my in-laws every now and again. Figured it'd be a good chance to share a bit of the place that we don't often see
I think I can pretty much write the script of your coming videos Mark. Mark plans to go someplace, unfortunately as he gets there it's closed for maintenance, then he decides he's gonna visit some abandoned building instead. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy every one of your vlogs :D
Good thing none of these - cute - college girls hit you on Wechat afterwards, that way your wife doesn't have to keep you on a tight leash or wait for you with a big club or mallett when you get home, City Hunter style :p
Thanks for all these nice vids and please keep them coming Mark. Enjoy your summer/winter
Haha yeah believe it or not I don't plan to go to places that are closed 😂 Some of the videos I had seen of other people going up were really recent - I'm just lucky I guess 😅
‘I’m a big celebrity on social media” 😂😂😂 9:55
Yeah man I didn't really know how to react to that one 😅
Thank you for giving me good and bad flashbacks of my 5 years in the Guo. Tier 3 and 4 cities are amazing but crazy places. I don't miss though the Laowai and Waiguoren calls as I walked about.
Haha yeah it's not bad if you're having a lovely day aye - but sometimes if you're not in the mood..... "wai guo ren!" can get a bit much
Think I like these even more than the ruggo content mate. Great stuff!
@@DirtyDawgSailing cheers man yeah I have to get outside the regular whiteboard comfort zone for these ones which is a nice change of pace 😅
@@TwoCentsOnTour you do it in style mate. Rockin the mandarin as well! Travelling so much for work and growing up with Xhosa, Zulu and Afrikaans. I have a penchant for understanding culture through langauage
@@DirtyDawgSailing ah man that's one thing I admire is that most South Africans are kind of like Europeans in that you tend to speak/understand 2, 3 or more languages! Here in NZ language learning isn't really seen as important - but it's definitely a window to the culture it belongs to
@@TwoCentsOnTour for sure man. I find it interesting how different my personality is depending on the language! The difference between my Afrikaans personality and Spanish personality is huge. My cousin when he's talking English is a different human being lol
Och you're a handsome De'il! They're ardor vanished when you mentioned your wife! Great video and I always enjoy the everyday conversation which shows our sameness.
Yeah man that's one thing I like to be able to share!
I’m sure my son would be interested in seeing your video in China. He’s probably watched your Two Cents rugby videos not knowing you have links with China. He’s gone back to China with his sister and his Mum to visit his Chinese family. My wife studied her degree at Wuhan University. My son is aiming to play prop for Saracens. He passed his GCSE Mandarin exam last summer and is awaiting his results for the exams he took this summer.
Ah wow that's an interesting wee rugby/China connection there! I have a video where I got into Wuhan University's campus in case you haven't seen it - ua-cam.com/video/ppjbGEb3Swc/v-deo.html
I find it funny how similar this is to Serbia in many ways. Espescially those kiosks around, they're everywhere in Belgrade and always have someone very nice to chat with in them
Ah wow is that so? They're definitely the best people to talk to for any tips on the surrounding area
Bro, I think I might have posted this comment on another Two Cents On Tour post but have to say: I went to China after visting the Balkans and China reminded me a lot of the former Yugoslavia, both people/culture wise and just the general environment.
If you have a foreign (Western) face, you are bound to be popular in China. If you have a foreign (Western) face AND happen to speak Chinese, you are literally a celebrity in China!
Yeah it's unfair because if you've got any colour face and learned English as a second language, nobody cares.... But yeah that being said even my foreign face couldn't get me into Macheng school a day before this vid! The guard didn't care 😂(rightly so)
Another reason why we here in the USA - what's left of it! - should be friends with China, but our - put our in quotes! - government and media never tires of telling is that China is the big enemy!
wow excellent vlog Mark! really cool to see you interacting with everyday Chinese people in their native language, keep it up!
@@MM-wo5uk cheers man yeah it's been a good one to brush off some rust with my Chinese aye, slacked off for a few years 😅
Really enjoy your vids so interesting the things you get up to love it that guy in the shop you visit he really loves his ciggies aye everytime you go there he's always got one going Aye cheers again Mark.
Cheers man yeah he was a real character! Was glad to meet him. And yeah his generation loves a smoke (well the men anyway)
Those girls were so cute and polite.
@@RetireearlyNYC yeah they were very friendly - my wife thought it was funny.... Probably because they never messaged me. If they had.... She might not have found it so amusing 😁
@@TwoCentsOnTour
Haha.
Watching China bloggers getting asked by Chinese to be added onto their social media, I often wonder what they do with it. Nothing bad I know. Is it to say I know a foreigner? Makes them look cool? Just curious
Yeah I guess it's kinda like Facebook back in its heyday? Talk to someone for 2 minutes followed by "are you on Facebook?". But yeah to go straight for the WeChat without even having the conversation first was... different 😂
The first time I've watched a non-rugby video of yours. Very entertaining and interesting. I wanted to call you the NZ Bill Bryson, but he only speaks English, so I guess you would be the improved Bill Bryson.
Cheers man! Yeah China is a pretty interesting place and it's always good to speak to some of the locals 😁
Indeed your manderine is better than many chinese
@@gphuang67 maybe in some pronunciation, but certainly not my vocab 😅 still working on it
As a Saffa that visited Shanghai last year (my first time in China) this is very fun to see your interactions with local people. I cannot speak Mandarin but i good experiences with the locals in Shanghai.
@@Sabundy cheers man yeah I was hoping to share some "real" stuff from China with regular people aye
Love the video. So cute!
Cheers man!
That was very interesting. I wonder if the reason that a lot of the security guards are so friendly is because they are from rural areas ?
That self-professed internet star was funny, bless him. And then 3 young female Uni students run after TC to exchange contact details, eat that internet star !
Yeah actually that might be a part of it - the countryside folks might be a bit more naturally friendly aye
If you are not Chinese, I recommend a translator during travel. Immersive translate is a great app for that
This is the first full youtube video I have watched in ages without skipping anything hahahahahahaha
@@heremianikora9949 lol hopefully that means I kept the edit to the interesting bits 😅
Very impressed! You speak te reo Mandarin. Many moons ago, I met a Samoan dude at Uni and he spoke Mandarin. I learnt te reo Swedish. 😂 Spent years there. Can't even speak te reo Maori. 😂😂
Haha yeah man feel kind of stink at my own ability in Maori (which is pretty much zero). My kids already know more than me from primary school
I can see why being a foreigner in Wuhan is being a hit with the locals and especially the uni girls, not surprised they never responded. 😂
Lol yeah I honestly thought they'd never send me anything - I was indeed correct 😂
Howzit Mark, from the Cape Winelands in Saffaland! Keep these vids coming, they’re greatly entertaining especially having visited China a couple of times! Go the ABs vs Fiji tomorrow…Bokke!🇳🇿🏉🇿🇦💪🍺😎
Cheers Richard mate! Yeah gonna be an interesting game - probably closer than Portugal vs SA!
I'm sure you haven't showed any so far but do you meet any other westerners whilst you were there!! Also I can only reiterate the other comments we want longer videos mate!
There aren't too many in Wuhan - although I have seen a few near the uni campus my in-laws stayed at. I assume they're teaching there (90% of foreigners working in China are teachers I guess). If it were Shanghai or Beijing there would be loads!
Interesting encounters. You would never have strangers asking you for contact details in NZ. Is this a normal thing there?
@@benrobinson375 yeah it's a bit different aye! In China it's normal for people to ask for your details after a brief chat - but not normal to just ask out of the blue like that 😅
Hey bro we are in Beijing right now! China is incredible!
@@League_life Ah that's awesome! Make sure you try a bunch of different food while you're there 😁
@@TwoCentsOnTour I love Chinese and other east Asian food by far the best in the world - but I watch these videos about adulterated foodstuffs in China, sewer oil and the like, and it's scary. What do you make of that?
@@MrLanternland yeah I was in China when there were a lot of did food scandals back in the day - some were pretty disconcerting to put it mildly. But yeah I think it was a few exceptions rather than the rule. Still it knocked a lot of people's faith in the domestic food industry - so a lot of people buy imported stuff if they can afford it (particularly things like baby milk powder)
@@TwoCentsOnTour What did u do? Did u find restaurants and food stores that u had confidence in, or did u also try to buy imported stuff, or what? Did u get sick?
@@MrLanternland I think in 7 years I had food poisoning once, so not too bad. But yeah it was mostly ok. I'll admit some of the street food stalls had the best food 😅
How many languages do you speak total? You must watch a video on UA-cam of a German guy speaking Xhosa in Cape Town, he also gets a similar treatment that you're getting in China from the locals.
Just English and Chinese mate. Xhosa must be tough! I struggle with the click sounds in some of the rugby player names!
@@TwoCentsOnTour Nice one, I am learning Japanese , I currently speak about 5, and understand 12. 😅😅 I learnt Xhosa in Cape Town when I was there for my studies. It was also very difficult for me to learn the new sounds in the early days. You do a fantastic job with the Xhosa names as a Kiwi though. You pronounce the names better than a lot of South Africans.
Ah man Japanese grammar is tough! Good luck with it. I find the Afrikaans ones easier than the Xhosa though aye!
@@TwoCentsOnTour Probably helps that Afrikaans is under the Germanic language umbrella and is linguistically not too far from English. Whereas Xhosa is in a totally different grouping and has counterintuitive sounds if you’re not from the region. For example the R in Xhosa/Zulu names is pronounced as G. 😅 Some fragments of Japanese grammar have similarities to my native language, that’s a small cheat code that I have going for me.
Wow! Your Mandarin is good! I'm struggling. I lived in Urumqi in 2019. From SA
Ah wow that's awesome man! I never went that far west!
Kia ora
Dude, I actually didn't think I would enjoy these, but I did!
Can you go in your pockets and get a better camera!
Haha good to hear it man.
This was recorded on the old GoPro Hero 9! It can record in 4K but I did everything in 1080p - probaby saves a bit of SD card space and doesn't overheat as much 😅
On my next trip I took a DJI Pocket 2 (which I won on a Facebook comp believe it or not) - but I didn't find it as easy to vlog with and the battery life isn't as good - couldn't be used in the rain etc. But it's way better for indoor stuff
I don't have enough words to praise you soooo I will leave a complain....your videos are too SHORT!!! COME ON...I kind of travel you ! Thank you for existing! You are the MAN!!!
Haha too kind as always man. I might have to go through some of the older unused footage as well, maybe for some UA-cam shorts
@@TwoCentsOnTour Whatever you do, just make more and longer videos!!!! You ROCK....Be ZEN and may Budda always protect you , family and country (China and new Zealand!)
Will keep making them man - lots more to come. Appreciate the support as always!
If u removed every video where someone says that your chinese is good and asked where you are from you would have to remove basically everything 😂
@@yoshihammerbro435 yeah it's like everyone's first reaction 😅
Too funny about the guy saying your Chinese is better than the local security dude. More precisely your Chinese pronunciation is more standard
Yeah exactly right - it's a very different thing from English because we don't really have a "standard"
Why 2 cents? Glad to see more videos
Yeah man been a while - need to keep editing!
Damn your Chinese is so good lol
@@RetireearlyNYC lol man people tell me that in China after only saying a few words 😅 but honestly my vocab still needs work
@@TwoCentsOnTour
Better than mine 🤷♂️😆
How difficult to visit without any Chinese language skills ?
@@jameslovering9158 kinda depends where you go aye, big places big Beijing and Shanghai are pretty straightforward. Even in Wuhan my mum and her sisters had a good look around 10 years ago without much hand holding.
Smaller towns it's probably a bit tougher
@@TwoCentsOnTour Yeah was thinking Shanghai with those cheaper flights from AKL. Interested to go for 1 week just as a test trip to see some of the rich culture and modern life. Thanks
Definitely worth a trip man. I still remember my first trip and just being wowed by the scale of everything
@@TwoCentsOnTour Yeah looking forward to it thanks
Kia ora, I used to live across the road from that temple. There used to be a factory there called 武锅, since been demolished for new apartments. No bull😊
@@youngzhang9294 ah wow is that right? At lot of places have become new apartments now! Every time I go back I find so many places have changed
@@TwoCentsOnTour yea I was just there from April. returned back to NZ in July. was hot AF over there in Wuhan. I have been up that tiny tower as a kid and so has my mum when she was a child lol.
Ah man I was back there in April too. At least it's not as hot as June/July!
@@TwoCentsOnTour from the subway station u walk by in the beginning of ur video. I worked out u r not too far from my parents current apartment. we stayed in dongxihu as well. My parents lives in the apartment buildings next to the golf course.
Wow really small world man, most of my videos start in Dongxihu - cos my in-laws were living there, although they've since moved
What amazing videos it seems you are very popular and how you show the reality of China is cool to actually see how people interact with you and how they really like New Zealand it’s cool to see
Cheers man yeah the people there were super friendly!
