Iron and Saltwater Battery How easy is that

  • From an obscure 'obsolete' technology that few developers were interested in a decade ago, redox flow batteries are now exploding onto the global energy storage market as a genuine multi-billion dollar competitor to lithium-ion. They have many attractive selling points already, but a US company called ESS claim to have the lowest cost, least environmentally impactful version using the cheap and abundant commodities of iron and saltwater.

      You should be careful listening to anyone, including this channel. Everyone has their own biases and this channel is no different, he is always desperate to pump up any "green" technology and ignores the downsides of the things he discusses, here for example the reality is redux flow batteries are very low density storage systems. It is completely impractical to use these for most use cases as you would need very large amounts of land to store the energy of a large industrial lithium ion battery. This channel always seems to ignore the clear downsides of the technology he discusses if it favours an advertised green solution.

    • @davestagner
      @davestagner 8 місяців тому +2

      @@paulosullivan3472 Low density storage is only a problem if physical space is at a premium, i.e. on board a vehicle. But for grid scale storage, the usual constraints are cost and lifespan, not size. Lithium batteries are expensive, and have a relatively low ceiling on the number of charging cycles they can handle. Flow batteries can be made of much cheaper materials (like iron and salt!), and can avoid the dendrite problem that eventually kills lithium. This makes it cheaper. If the grid battery farm needs another acre or two of land, that’s ok, if it means saving millions of dollars in the process. Make sure you’re looking at the correct constraints.

    Being a farmer, I've been an offgridder for 32 years. Our biggest problem is having to consume a great deal of energy for everything in a farm. Big volumes of cheaply stored renewable energy will definitely change the face of farming and also help decrease carbon emissions. Governments are slow and sluggish in acting on the urgency of the issue. I hope they will open their eyes and minds soon. For all of us.

    A German company is advertising a flow battery that can be installed at home like a powerwall:
    "Prolux Solutions says that all components can be repaired indefinitely. It notes that the vanadium electrolyte also retains at least 95% of its capacity, even after 20 years, so it can be reused indefinitely."

    Dave, I appreciate your videos! It is my opinion, based on my own energy needs, doing a lot of reading, watching everything on batteries and renewable energy, etc., that batteries are the key to everything! We need less expensive, home and business scale storage batteries. And these batteries need to be inexpensive, safe, affordable, easily recyclable, low cost, made of common materials, and economical. We also need more streamlined permitting and easier access to financing for small scale solar, wind and batteries. Citizens have been mistreated by the utility monopolies for far too long. Distributed energy production and storage is robust.

Are there any companies offering renewable power sources coupled with short/long term electricity storage. First to demonstrate the vanadium battery was of course Maria Kazacas of NSW University Australia. I thought it was a great idea . Naturally what came to mind then was other elements to use with multiple valence states to exploit , elements like iron yes , then there's copper too but iron is more appealing. Lead also has multiple valence states and the lead acid battery operates because of this . The advantage is when you can avoid the clutter and unpredictability of how heaps of different substances will adversely interact and shorten life . There's heaps of different substances in the lithium batteries as an example. .

    How could you forget Barry down the road with his shed chemistry lab, who just recently made a flow battery with jam jars and aquarium pumps??? All joking aside, fantastic video as always, heres hoping that the next time you talk about redox flow batteries, its because they are being installed left right and center and are busy saving the world. Or maybe thats just wishful thinking. Either way, looking forward to the next one!

    Hey dude glad you got to ESS because these companies that are finding solutions without using more expensive elements or rare earth are critical to sustainable grid storage, which is critical for green energy, so I put them high up on the list of great solutions and am hoping they start winning lots of contracts to get their tech out there. I mean they've already installed systems, but when we get the most benefit is when a few of these start to push out the others so there are less competitors AND they can then get to economics of scale.
