I can't watch this without tearing up. A master at her craft, and one who took care of her instrument. The lack of smoking and drinking are so very evident. At this late stage in her fabulous career, she still sounds beautiful and youthful!!! Again, a true master at her craft. Thank you!!
I mean. She just got up there and sang Stevie Wonder (which is hard to do) with no rehearsal and killed it!!! No one can do it like Ms. Ella Fitzgerald. She was gifted and a vocal beast.
....the miracle of her life and career was that she always sounded like a highly spirited 16 year old girl....just full of energy and joy and light....forever young....forever inspiring....
Wow the senior most singer we see on UA-cam.what forward talent. I see Lionel Richie, Oprah Winfrey, Whitney Houston all stunned by her in the audience.
It is unbelievable how young some of these artist look in the audience and how a lot of them are no longer with us. Cherish each day and leave a legacy. Our time will come.
I cannot thank you enough for uploading this. It's so hard to watch her perform because I kept on getting emotional about it. Here we have a grand old lady of music, so humble, salt of the earth! Is there or will there be any one close to her? NEVER! See the way she appreciates new talent! How meek and polite of her to remark that singing is the only thing she could do! The world could learn a lot from her. Since I never got the opportunity to meet the grand Dame that she was, I can only hope to kiss her feet in the after life. I don't care if I'm too young to listen to her and not that shallow Justin Beiber for I have her on the pedestal in the shrine of my memory.
I've always been a fan of hers, what a pleasure it would be to go back in time to meet her and to hear her sing with Louis Armstrong would be so great :)
Her voice was in serious decline because her health was in serious decline. She did a lot of flawless singing in her prime, but she was no longer able to do it by this point. She had already had open heart surgery, was nearly blinded by diabetes, and would within a few years have both legs amputated.
@@direfranchement ....but not before she stunned the world with sublime performances in her old age....the singer Vesta Williams said that at one of Ella's last performances they had to practically CARRY her out...but once she got to the mike....she was AMAZING....
@@direfranchement Nobody's singing is ever flawless. Every singer has weaknesses and they become more apparent as they age. In the case of Ella, she was smart enough to know how to use her remaining resources to be able to perform well into her 70s when her health was in decline. This performance wasn't bad...its no pitch, the voice has plenty of blume and she is able to make it her own. Her voice remained youthful throughout her career....and when the support started to go and the wobble began to develop...she would move instead of sustain the note.
WOW ELLA, ELLA, ELLA, such a GREAT singer and PERSON, with a marvelous heart and a very fine sense of humbleness !!! You made tears out of my eyes !!! joyful tears !!!!
....she was his fave singer...and i do not blame him for being intimidated...she could upstage him at will....her phrasing and jazz scatting are unworldly....
I remember seeing this when it was first broadcast. I was like 13 or something, and just getting into jazz. At 2:06, my little brother and I looked at each other like "HOLY SHIT."
There are some...but not many. Gladys Knight is 76 years old and her voice has changed very little over the years. Operatic legend Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, best known to the non classical public as the singer of the wedding of Charles and Diana, sang in public until she was 73. The Italian Soprano Magda Olivero gave her final public performance at age 99. So there are some..but not many.
0:30 ugh you can definitely she’s getting older and declining in health but she still sounds pretty as ever, that never changed always thought she was the most beautiful too out of all the jazz singers
OMG!!! It is. I feel sick ashamed. Im a white guy. But my parents loved Good Times. Used to watch the reruns as a child. My mom would kill me if she found out I forgot about Estelle.
I pray all these artist sitting in the audience know how privileged they were to have experienced such a legend!
Love the way Whitney nods and smiles. The younger diva appreciating the Diva who paved the way for her.

For her, singing was more natural than speaking. She was from another planet. That's who she was
Ella Fitzgerald - the best voice in recorded history!
Sorry, but the best voice was Dame Vera Lynn!

If you can pull that off unrehearsed; then you are truly the Queen of jazz
what a lovely, humble woman. She said the only thing she could do was sing.
Even at this late stage in her career, her voice remains fresh and youthful and her timing untouched by age.

I love her so much! :-) You are the sunshine of my life, Ella!
" I'm learning how to rap"😃😃😃

I can't even describe how she just made me feel. Just WOW!!!
The First Lady of Song.. forever loved!
She taught everyone how it's done. Pure fabulosity! I can't get enough of the Boss Lady.
It is unbelievable how young some of these artist look in the audience and how a lot of them are no longer with us. Cherish each day and leave a legacy. Our time will come.
You're darn right you'll always be around! You're still in out hearts Miss Ella, may that always be!

I also imagine being able to do exactly that!
She was part of that artists, like Mahalia Jackson etc…
Dear Ella, you were and still are the QUEEN!
I believe this was the NAACP image award for lifetime achievement. I love Ella so much❤

@baritonebynight Don't need to be lectured by you on Ella, the human voice, or aging. I am most likely more well-versed in all three topics than you.

Frank Sinatra once sid that he's most nervous when he's singing with Ella

She did that with no rehearsal? Wow! We are some magical people!
TEARS IN MY EYES
Dear dear Ella, what an incredible effortlessly talented person!
"I haven't rehearsed it with the band" but let me just go ahead and kill it and bring the house down.
I remember seeing this when it was first broadcast. I was like 13 or something, and just getting into jazz. At 2:06, my little brother and I looked at each other like "HOLY SHIT."
Whitney and Ella🤗🤗❤️ I should’ve been brought up in a different generation 🥰

who is the woman at 3:15?.... she looks familiar
Esther Rollins, maybe? She played the mother in Good Times.
OMG!!! It is. I feel sick ashamed. Im a white guy. But my parents loved Good Times. Used to watch the reruns as a child. My mom would kill me if she found out I forgot about Estelle.
its Esther ROLLE, you idiot.
its esther ROLLE, not Rollins. what a bunch of shit-brains.
Esther Rolle (from Good Times)
WHO is the guy in the background? He was blurred during this performance in Swedish tv.
The one doing the clapping thing? It's Al Jarreau.
If only she was here today
No one really in Ella's class.
