It's pretty goofy ... my girlfriend and I were having this exact same conversation last night ... what's up with South Korea?! We're baffled. The only thing we could think of was that the guy who was President (who wanted to call martial law) is corrupt as corrupt can be, and got scared ... and now his political faction doesn't want to own up to the fact that they support a completely corrupted dude. Kind of like in the U.S. with Trump ... the Republicans sold their souls to support a known rapist and convicted felon ... while knowing EXACTLY who and what he is ... but he brings them MONEY and POWER.
After the president's impeachment, the prime minister assumed the role of acting president, but there were suspicions that he might have been involved in the president's acts of insurrection. However, given the need to stabilize the chaotic country quickly, the National Assembly decided to cooperate with him for the time being. Nevertheless, he betrayed those expectations by delaying the appointment of the constitutional judges who were to preside over the impeachment trial passed by the National Assembly, and he also refused to authorize the special investigation into the insurrection. As a result, suspicions grew that the prime minister was involved in the insurrection and was obstructing all efforts, leading, regrettably, to his impeachment as well, following the president’s. However, the issue is that this is not the end. Following the prime minister's impeachment, there is not a single cabinet minister who can confidently declare themselves uninvolved in this insurrection. Furthermore, the president has yet to relinquish his ambitions, continuing to evade investigations and delay justice.
The opposition party previously impeached all 3 Consitution Court justices. They didn't want to appoint anyone? And how is it constitutional to impeach the acting president for not cooperating with them? The Korean constitution says there needs to be 200 members of the parliament in order to impeach the acting president, but they had changed the constitution on the spot in order to get what they want. Also, for the last time when the impeachment of the president Park took place, the same people who are demanding to appoint justices were against the same thing. Stop spreading one-sided story. They are impeaching anyone who does not cooperate with their demand, which is u constitutional. They are just thugs. They already impeached freaking 27 people before Han. All they have been doing for the last two years was to impeach everyone and anyone. Lee Jae Myung needs to go to prison. He can not delay his trials any longer. He sent $80 millions directly to Kim Jung Un. He is trying to a avade any legal punishment. He is a criminal,- and the opposition party is destroying Korea in order to protect one criminal. Tell the whole truth!
On behalf of the Republic of Korea's youth, I will explain the situation in Korea accurately here. 1. The opposition party impeached 23 ministerial-level officials while the current National Assembly is divided into government. 2. President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law to correct the opposition party's reckless and fraudulent election suspicions. (The only way to investigate the Central Election Commission was martial law, and the Central Election Commission did not cooperate in fraudulent elections at all before the declaration.) 3. The current opposition leader is someone who made illegal remittances to North Korea and is pursuing a pro-China policy. 4. As you can see in the current news, the president's declaration of martial law is falsely inciting that it is a rebellion. The opposition party used the sedition to impeach the president and acting president Han Deok-soo. 4. Now, Koreans realize the truth through false incitement by the opposition party and are posing as bodyguards in front of their official residence to protect the president. 5. President Yoon Suk Yeol is now declaring that he will fight to the end against anti-state forces. STOP THE STEAL SAVED KOREA!!!

@@BookAndLaceclear headed democracy? 😂 Your not aware what this entire impeachment is about are you? The parliament were meeting to vote as a democratically elected parliment does, the president sent in the military to physically stop them telling them to break down the door and drag them out, shoot them if need be. The military did break into parliament and try stop them but fortunately they 6 kill anyone. Anything Trump did isn't anywhere close to this - it would be like Trump ordering the military to go into the house and drag Nancy Pelosi out, if she resists shoot her, not on the same level as being mean. This new impeachment is about the 2nd in command blocking the trial of the president who's his friend, so they got rid of him too.
Two of three judges the opposition party demands Mr. Han to appoint have serious problems. One was a former (and still!) "Marx-Leninist" activist who managed to infiltrate into S Korea's legal system through passing the national bar, unchecked of his loyalty to the nation. The other one is also a former student activist who also took advantage of the S Korea';s fair and only merit-based legal examination system. Seriously, the husband of the latter is a lawyer who works in a law firm run by a the chief accuser of Pres Yoon's impeachment. This certainly violates the conflict of interest and this is the reason why Acting President Mr. Han refuses to appoint these two. It is crystal clear that these two will be very biased as their track record of verdicts shows. Mr. Han is a fine man who is respected by many in the country. He was one of those brilliant economists who sacrificed his entire career to build S Korea's economy and also a professional diplomat who gave all to this country. It is extremely tearful to see that Mr. Han is humiliated by those that did nothing to or even plotted to destroy the country that gave full freedom and opportunity to them.
I'm not particularly in favour of a monarchy. I have very little interest in our monarchy however I think that it does bring a certain level of stability that countries that have a president as head of state don't have. Plus I would say that people that become president tend to have an unpleasant ruthlessness that is necessary to get to the top. Both systems are imperfect.
democratic party and the leader of democratic part jae-myoung lee made this chaotic circumstances. becuase they want to destroy current government and take the power. The real insurrectionist force is the Democratic Party and Criminal Jae myong lee!!
Essentially what you're seeing is the opposition party that currently holds the majority in the National Assembly abusing their power to impeach everyone who aren't succumbing to their demands that are largely anti-American and pro-China, pro-Russia, and pro-North Korea. You need to understand that the impeached president is the one fighting for true democracy and South Korea's sovereignty.
Dangerous words. Calling people a “cancer”, “subhuman”, etc. Never ends well. I agree that the martial law was outrageous and responsibilities have to be determined, but judge the actual acts and the particular people involved-rather than be sensationalistic/vague. More people have been killed/hurt by “cleansing” attempts than you’d know.
@waitingforapril sorry to break it to you but, that is exactly whom I address, and why I call it a cancer. I'll ignore the fact you're completely missing the gist of my comment which tries to deliver the holistic perspective. And I'll answer you. This is not an ordinary political 'conflict' you can naively hold your judges and remain prudent. It's an obviously attempted coup, an attemp to demolish the democracy itself, and push the country into a brink of war. Every new confession and admittance from high ranking military officers and currently detained former defense minister is coming out each week, which proves the animosity of this crime, and even more connection among the high ranking officials. So by your logic, I'm exactly calling those accountable a cancer
Some conspiracy theorists suggested that the crash of the Korean Airplane coincided with the illegal issuance of an arrest warrant for President Yoon and the impeachment of acting president Han Duck-soo. Han was the second South Korean leader to be unlawfully removed from office by the far-left majority in parliament, and this occurred within just two weeks. The tragedy overshadows the significance of the illegal acts committed by the communist majority in parliament. This tragic airline crash sadly symbolises the fall of democracy in Asia. A dog never bites the hand of the owner who feeds it. From this perspective, the acting president Choi, who holds the maximum presidential authority, has betrayed the trust of President Yoon and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo. The excuse that he betrayed those who were like parents to him for economic stability is nothing more than a weak excuse. Suppose the acting president, Choi, genuinely intended to achieve financial stability in Korea. In that case, he should have followed the advice of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who is recognised as an economic expert with 40 years of service to the country. The acting president has betrayed the nation and those who have been like father figures to him for personal gain. He is a self-oriented meek cowardly person. It appears that everyone else except Mr. Choi in the Korean government is again facing the possibility of impeachment by the parliament that is suspected of being infiltrated by spies from China and North Korea. Korean conservatives seem overly optimistic about the situation. It seems that media outlets and broadcast companies are in unanimous agreement, relentlessly swaying public opinion in favour of impeachment. The prosecution and police appear indifferent to conducting a fair investigation, acting more like hunting dogs. This raises the question, "What kind of rule of law is this?" The far-left legislative National Assembly is encouraging lawlessness. I am increasingly worried that President Yoon may not endure this crisis to lead the country away from potential disaster, devastating war, and total economic collapse. The opposition leader, Lee Jae-Myung, and the left-wing factions in Korea have shown a blatant disregard for the United States. Meanwhile, the United States remains patient and diplomatic. The leftists, however, are known to hide their assets abroad in the United States, and ironically many of their children are American citizens. So why, then, is America hesitating, with its characteristic diplomacy?
The facts- the opposition held 2 voting sessions to take yoon down from his role as president just because they didn't like the outcome of the first vote-so that's not really democracy and true voices of the parliament being abided by is it?!!

There has been a noticeable increase in support for president Yoon recently as people have begun to realize that martial law was necessary and justified when he declared it. Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung should be locked up for all this chaos.

This is a very serious question and if any person from Korea can answer please aid my understanding. How can the opposition have a majority yet another party have rulership?
There are three important elections in Korea: presidential elections, parliamentary elections, and local elections. The party to which the president belongs becomes the ruling party, but it may not receive public support in parliamentary elections. This is a characteristic of a presidential system similar to the United States.
Its possible because we vote the president and the national assembly members seperately the president dont necessarily have to come from the ruling party
As others have said, it is possible because the assembly elections and presidential elections are separate. To provide more detailed context, during Yoon's presidential election, the now 'ruling party' was already pretty unpopular and a minority party (less so than now), largely due to the corruption scandals and subsequent impeachment of their former party leader and ex-President Park GH. So they brought it a Yoon SY as an 'untainted' political outsider, a prosecutor who led the charge in Park GH's corruption investigations, as their candidate for the presidential election. Even then they only won by less than 1%. In the subsequent assembly election, the 'ruling party' lost even more seats. Which isn't surprising given that Yoon has been the most unpopular president in recent history even before the self-coup.
I actually wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't briefed first. It seems like the martial law declaration was a spur of the moment thing. Even the U.S. government wasn't warned first.

...Thanks for cheering for Korea to become the next communist state in East Asia. The leader of the opposition party is being persecuted for sending $80 million directly to Kim Jung Un. He also sent his own brother to a mental institution. He is charged for violating election law. He called the US troops in Korea "occupying forces." Seven key witnesses to his corruption cases were found dead. He impeached all the judges and persecutors who were on his cases. He has sent civilians who tried to expose him to mental institutions. He openly supports the CCP and voted against the espionage law in Korea. The whole party passed bills to change the constitution in order to protect him. They cut down all the defense budgets and disbanded the National Intelligent Services. If you are Chinese, sure, you would be happy that Korea will soon be a part of China. But if you are neither Korean nor Chinese, please don't say anything.
It's going be fine. Don't assume the worst. Koreans are strong people who have created a miracle of Han River. We'll figure out our ways through this and it's not a big deal having a few people acting as a president in the meanwhile.
"Korean people" didn't create the miracle of the Han River - Park Chung Hee did. If it was just the people, why didn't it happen under Rhee Syngman? Everything comes down to your leaders, whatever country it is. And Korea's leadership right now is a mess.
This is happening because the remnants of the pro-regime coup have yet to be eradicated. Recently, even the acting president was one of them, and most of the ministers are no exception. Therefore, the situation will remain tumultuous for the time being, but it is hoped and believed by many that this crisis will soon be resolved through democratic procedures. When this settles, it will be recorded/remembered not only as a very rare failed pro-regime coup but also as a great victory for the citizens. Fingers crossed!
Your people threatening violence and getting in the face of current leadership is not democracy friend.. looking on from the US, you all look petty and stupid..
This is happening because the opposition party leader who has been under investigations for many criminal allegations are delaying his trials, and the thugs in the opposition party is protecting him at the expense of Korean people. This is happening because they already impeached all 3 consitutional court justices that were appointed by the president and refused to appoint anyone for moths. They are the ones who didn't want to appoint anyone in Constitutional Court for months. They already impeached 29 key officials who refuse to cooperate with them. Lee Jae Myung is dodging trials by impeaching every single judges and prosecutors who were on his cases. There are 7 different key witnesses to his cases were found dead. He has sent $80 million in cash to North Korea, and it is confirmed by his collaborators who are already serving time. He is already sentenced 1 year in prison for violation of election law. Now he is doing his best to expedite the presidential election, again, in order to avoid prison sentence!! Stop telling the one sided left wing propaganda online! What they did to the acting president was unconstitutional. Han himself voted against the Martial Law!
The Korean opposition party has taken control of everything in Korea and is reporting distorted reports, and documents from the Constitutional Court and the president have been leaked and serious human rights violations are requested for help from the international community.
When he first declared it He said something along the lines about the "cabinet" being full of dissidences etc... and he needed to take control of the government.
Yoon's personal claims is that the main opposition party, the Democratic Party, as well as various other people like the then leader of the ruling party, the leader of the secondary opposition party, the entire election comission, various members of the judiciary, a UA-camr, leadership of major labor unions, etc., are "North Korean anti-state forces". And in particular, that the opposition parties only got a majority by rigging the election with help from the election comission. Despite investigations by both the election commission (who he appointed an unqualified personal friend to head) and the NIS (National Intelligence Service, Korean equivalent of the CIA) both confirming no such rigging has occured and is literally impossible. Korean elections are done with paper ballots and counted by hand. Subsequent invenstigations have shown this claim is bogus and he just wanted to be a dictator, with him planning a coup long before the most recent assembly election. The main players seem to be former head of military intelligence, Noh Sang Won, who was fired during the previous president's term for rape charges, but which he views as a political witchhunt due to feminism. Noh Sang Won is close friends with his successor as head of miilitary intelligence Moon Sang Ho, and previous head of presidential security, Kim Yong Hyun, and saw the opportunity to return to the military in a major capacity if a self-coup were to happen, and started planning a coup since early 2023. Yoon - Kim - Noh - Moon actively started to organize a coup around March 2024, hoping to trigger a new Korean War with North Korea to justify martial law. This lead to the seeming escalation of tensions with North Korea we have seen in 2024 (the Mongolian embassy incident, surveillence drones in Pyeongyang, propaganda and feces balloons, etc.). North Korea has not acted on these provocations. Then minister of national defence, Shin Won Sik, seems to have been at least partially aware of this coup attempt and privately opposed the self-coup, but did not go public with this knowledge, and did not deter these provocations. After a major intelligence hack, ex-Minister Shin publicly stated he was firing Moon Sang-Ho, and restructuring military intelligence, possibly as a self-coup deterent, in September 2024. Yoon then fired Shin and appointed Kim as the minister of national defence. With their attempts to provoke North Korea not being successful, they seem to have shifted strategies around November 2024 to (1) claim the election was rigged by North Korea, then (2) use military intelligence black ops to fake a North Korean invasion and/or terrorist attacks pretending to stop the investigations into the election. Three locations of such faked terrorist attacks have been identified (Chengju airport, Daeju airport, and the THAAD joint US-Korean military base), and Noh's private notes also reveal Baengnyeongdo (the closest island in South Korea to North Korea) as a potential target. They failed at step (1) of the plan.
I was born and raised in Korea, but now I live in the UK and have become a British citizen. Still, I am deeply concerned about the state and future of Korea.

South Korea's Democratic Party stated that if Acting Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok behaves in the same manner as former Acting Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, they will immediately proceed with impeachment. If such a situation arises, the required number of members to hold a Cabinet meeting will not be met, effectively leaving South Korea in a state of anarchy.
Impeaching (Acting President & PM) (Vice PM & Minister) Choi Sang Mok does not mean the government is in a state of anarchy. (1) For each Minister who is impeached, each Ministry still operates as usual under the Vice Minister, who are, specific to this government, far more qualified than the purely-political and unqualified Ministers of Yoon's government. (2) I assume you mean if we drop to less than 10 State Council members, it is impossible to have a State Council Meeting. That would require 5 more impeachments, not just Vice PM & Minister Choi. Next in line after Choi is Vice PM & Minister Lee Ju Ho, who to our knowledge, was not in the State Council Meeting which lead to martial law. Perhaps he will be more likely to comply with investigations into the coup. We will see. (3) Even if the State Council Meetings are no longer in session, that only means they cannot make significant changes on government policies outlined in Artice 89 of the constitution, which include veto laws instated by the National Assembly. A few weeks without a State Council is not unmanageable. Furthermore, the President and Prime Minister (for which Vice PM Choi now takes both roles), can just appoint new members to the State Council if the need truly arises. Anyone who is not actively serving in the military can be a State Council member and appointing a new State Council member does not require a National Assembly hearing or State Council meeting. With Vice PM & Minister Choi having both acting President and PM roles, he can appoint new State Council members by himself without counsel. It has just become common practice to have all State Council members be Ministers during and after DJ's presidency as Ministers require an Assembly hearing and having all State Council members *de facto* go through an Assembly is more democratic. It's likely if it truly goes to 5+ impeachments and an urgent need for a State Council arises, the Acting President & PM will just appoint the Vice Ministers as State Council members.

It seems that many journalists might not be aware that the law requires a case to be judged by nine justices. There are economic concerns, but it's important to adhere to the legal system. To clarify, before the declaration of martial law, there was an agreement to appoint three additional judges to the court. However, Han Duck-soo was impeached because he did not make these appointments. If Choi follows in Han's footsteps, he too might need to be replaced. It's essential for Korea to run according to its laws and systems. It's heartening to see that people in Korea can hold peaceful protests involving millions without any incidents.
Those three seats for the Constitutional Court were empty for months before the Martial Law, because the opposition party impeached all of them. The same people who are impeaching Han for not appointing the justices are the ones who didn't want to appoint the justices. The court demanded for new justices, but they refused. Plus, you just can't impeach everyone just because someone refuses to cooperate with the bigger party. The Korean constitution clearly says that there needs to be more than 200 votes in order to impeach the acting president. There were 192 people voted for the impeachment of Han. Han will be the 29th official to be impeached for the last 2 years. The opposition party has been impeaching everyone including the judges. So stop spreading left wing propaganda.
@@Deepsleep-f3v You really think people are idiots don't you. (1) The opposition party did not impeach Constitutional Court justices. There isn't even a way to impeach a Constitutional Court justice unless they do so themselves. They simply ended their 5 year term. Why would they even impeach them. The Democratic Party appointed 2 of the 3 former holders of the currently empty seats. (2) The Korean constitution does not say an acting president has to have 200 votes. The reason the president requires 200 votes (technically, more or equal to 2/3 of assembly members of which there are currently 300 but the number is not fixed) is because it is a democratically elected position, whereas PM (who only acts as President in case of impeachment) is unilaterally appointed by the President, under non-binding advisement of the Assembly. The division of the Assembly which provides preliminary interpretation of laws have stated only a simple majority is necessary. If PM Han wants to oppose this decision, he can go to the Constitutional Court.
Here, Opposition party has been refusing to appointing 3 judges so as not to cooperative to the government so far. After congress impeachment for President, now they want 3 judges appointment to impeach president by Constitutionally.. Ridiculous hu~~

Democracy means Rule by the People...not Rule by the Politicians as is the case with the current democratic model in all parts of the world today. Maybe it's time for direct democracy in South Korea?
Remember, South Korea has only had democracy since the 80s. Democracy is not the norm, for thousands of years up to the 80s these people had kings, emperors, foreign powers, military dictatorships. For some reason people today imagine the world is set, history is over and everything is the way it is forever. The world has not and never will be like that. There governments and countries of the world will look nothing like today in 40 years.
Han could've stopped the economic slide if he just approved Yeol's impeachment. Yeol supporters will have the audacity to blame their opposition for this dip, but they'll cry harder if Yeol comes back to power and strips their freedom away
This doesn’t cause more uncertainty and is eerily similar to France, but almost no news outlets are making the connection. The SK Democratic Party needs to get Yoon out and letting various interim presidents block judge appointments could return Yoon to power.

4. Now, Koreans realize the truth through false incitement by the opposition party and are posing as bodyguards in front of their official residence to protect the president.
5. President Yoon Suk Yeol is now declaring that he will fight to the end against anti-state forces.

As a Korean, I’d say, ‘We are cooked.’

You need to understand that the impeached president is the one fighting for true democracy and South Korea's sovereignty.
Treating a cancer takes pain, this is more like a process on which Korea heal itself.

Why has South Korea all of a sudden decided to go nuts?

This is a very serious question and if any person from Korea can answer please aid my understanding. How can the opposition have a majority yet another party have rulership?
There are three important elections in Korea: presidential elections, parliamentary elections, and local elections. The party to which the president belongs becomes the ruling party, but it may not receive public support in parliamentary elections. This is a characteristic of a presidential system similar to the United States.
Look at France, the very same has been happening since the summer elections
Imagine Lizz Truss elected as a president and David Cameron appointed as PM by mrs truss
Where it ends? Lady it ends with new elections. Jees

Exactly. What is going on in South Korean with the back-to-back impeachments!?!?
This is happening because the remnants of the pro-regime coup have yet to be eradicated. Recently, even the acting president was one of them, and most of the ministers are no exception. Therefore, the situation will remain tumultuous for the time being, but it is hoped and believed by many that this crisis will soon be resolved through democratic procedures. When this settles, it will be recorded/remembered not only as a very rare failed pro-regime coup but also as a great victory for the citizens. Fingers crossed!

U.S.A needs NK rare earth minerals
They failed at step (1) of the plan.
and now a plane crashed

Takes generations to build a good country. One takes 1 jerk to ruin it. Hope South Korea can get it back together.

불법 체포영장 반대 - Opposition to an illegal Arrest Warrant!

All we need now are the 4 Horsemen bolting through the sky.
Up there with that dead dude Jesus?😊
Han could've stopped the economic slide if he just approved Yeol's impeachment. Yeol supporters will have the audacity to blame their opposition for this dip, but they'll cry harder if Yeol comes back to power and strips their freedom away
This doesn’t cause more uncertainty and is eerily similar to France, but almost no news outlets are making the connection. The SK Democratic Party needs to get Yoon out and letting various interim presidents block judge appointments could return Yoon to power.
