I was a rottie breeder 25 years ago and I decided to stop breeding for several reasons, mainly I could no longer put the time needed into it.
I had a working line German import stud dog titled in schutzhund. My breeding females were born in the USA from German lines. All of the females passed AKC good citizen test and were OFA tested before breeding.
Imo it's very important for potential puppy buyers to see and understand OFA results on both parents as rotties, like many big breeds are prone to arthritis and hip/elbow dysplasia.
These days, breeders should have genetic testing done BEFORE they breed a dog. No excuse not to as many genetic diseases can be avoided by doing this important step. Ask the breeder if they've done this and look at the results. 5:32
As for activity level, do your research on bloodlines. Dogs with working lines will have more drive and energy which equals more destructive behavior if not channeled.
ALWAYS buy from a reputable breeder! Do your homework, check references which should be available from breeder. The breeder should happily provide contact info from people who have purchased pups from them.
What does show versus pet quality mean to the breeder? Honestly, unless the breeder has titled dogs, they are not qualified to determine this. Some breeders charge different prices for this distinction.
A breeder with titled dogs will want a signed contract from you agreeing to spay/neuter and not breed the dog when selling a dog for pet only.
Don't pass on that pet quality dog if you're not going to show, but ask questions about why the dog is pet only. Breed standards for showing are picky, so it might be as simple as the ears tilt back a little instead of hanging straight down.
Speaking of contracts, your breeder should have one. This protects the breeder, the dog AND you. Expectations and guarantees are in the contract and prevents misunderstandings.
The contract should include any guarantees from the breeder, such as health. It should specify a time frame for the health guarantee, it should say certified by a veterinarian and state what will happen if you have to bring dog back or keep the dog and receive money back from breeder.
A health guarantee is usually 1-2 years and lists conditions. For example, dysplasia or significant arthritis in the dog before 2 years old or genetic diseases. The contract should say certified by vet, as the breeder isn't guaranteeing no arthritis that set up because the dog got hit by a car.
Some breeders will take a dog back for any reason because they care about their dogs. I did and gave the owner $500 back if it was other than health guarantee. My health guarantee before 2 years old was return of dog get full purchase price back.
Ask for vaccination and worming records. Rotties seem to contract parvo easily when they're not vaccinated on time and I always recommended an extra booster shot for them.
A good reputable breeder will ask what type of environment you have. Fenced yard? How big? Kids? Other pets? Why do you want a rottie? Have you had one before and if not what dog experience do you have?
The breeder will strongly stress socialization meaning get that puppy out and about often but not until 2-3rd puppy shot is given.
Have you ever trained a big strong breed? Rotties are smart, but can be stubborn and they will try you. Bonus most are highly food motivated lol. If you're not experienced, going to a good trainer is mandatory.
Good breeders make themselves available to buyers after the sale too. Questions about training, health you should be able to get answers from the breeder long after the sale. Don't be a pest though and bug the breeder asking things like what treats do I buy when your dog is 3 years old lol.
Finally, if you don't have 30 minutes per day to devote entirely to your dog playing/training, don't get one.
I know this post is long and lots of info, but I've fostered and rehabbed countless rotties over the years that were surrendered to shelter or rescue because the owner wasn't prepared for this breed. I am still doing it, but these days it's including cane corsos, boerbels, mastiffs along with the rotties 😢

Hello im new to your channel as of today!!! I been watching some of your most recent videos on Rottweilers that you have posted on UA-cam!!! I'm in the market for adopting a Miniature Rottweiler and my question to you is do you only breed standard size Rottweilers and if so can you help or lead a customer to being able to adopted a Miniature Rottweiler as well??? The reason being is because I live in a small apartment so that's the reason for wanting a Miniature Rottweiler instead of a standard size one!!! More or less what would be the out going price with papers and the proper vaccinations that are required to have or are recommend to have for a 7 to 8 week old Miniature Rottweiler if possible??? Thank You!!! Your videos on UA-cam are Great, very informative, and very interesting to watch!!!

Be cautious of someone who thinks it’s ok to cut a dogs tail off

If you knew the real reason why Rottweilers have no tail. you wouldn’t be comment here is the reason
Rottweilers used to pull carts for the butcher so he cut the tail off so it didn’t get caught in the wheels of the cart while the dog was pulling it that is the Real reason why Rottweilers have no tails yes it is cruel but this is how they were meant to be nowadays It is illegal to do this here in the UK where I live and most of Europe

    • @Matt-tk4vs
      @Matt-tk4vs 2 місяці тому +1

That may be the reason, but that's not what those dogs are used for anymore. So why would you still do that?@@ashleytombs

@@Matt-tk4vs I know it piss me off that even though it is illegal to do nowadays and there is no reason for it to happen people still do it
