newsies is my favourite musical of all time and i looovvveddd seeing it. i thought the cast was incredible! but i completely agree, the sound was definitely off. and you’re so right i was sat 2 rows from the front and i could hear the actors on stage before i could hear them through the mic.
Love that one of my fav zombies UA-camrs is into theater as well. You should watch Dogfight, it’s a musical that takes place during the Vietnam War, and it’s by the same creators as Dear Evan Hansen, it’s one of my favorites.
So sorry that the lights went off durning Six and that your seat wasn’t good. I hope you see it again with a much better experience. It an amazing experience if everything goes well. 😢 I would be disappointed as well.
I'm jealous, I've never seen a musical in person. I've tried to get tickets to see The Book of Mormon in Salt Lake City, but everytime it comes here it sells out it like 30 seconds.
Yeah I'm very lucky to be in London where there's so much theatre activity all the time! For your city, it might be a good idea to email box offices of theatres when you know ticket sales might be upcoming soon as there are sometimes fan presales that are a bit easier to get tickets for and box office *might* (no promises haha) be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck!! :D
Of the ones you've listed I've only seen Newsies and Lion King and I completely disagree as far as those two are concerned! Newsies is at best B tier. Dancing was awesome but the songs are not memorable and the plot is very thin. As for Lion King, I would put it at A tier. Granted it's probably the nostalgia being a Disney kid and all but I really love the changes they made to the score compared to the Disney film. I certainly think there's more than 2 good songs in there - Circle of Life, He Lives in You, Be Prepared and Shadowland. I am a little confused by your "Overrated" tier though. Overrated suggests that you think it's rating should be lower than what the majority think. But wouldn't it be possible for an "overrated" musical to still be A/B/C tier?
Front of house staff really should have done something about those women talking through Cabaret. I saw Beetlejuice on tour last weekend, and, oh my god through nearly the entire first act people were constantly coming and and out of the balcony making everyone get up from their seats so they could get up or sit down. This wasn't at applause breaks, but through the middle of scenes and songs. So incredibly irritating!
ahaha forgive me - I just can't get past the fact that beyond Circle of Life, Can't Wait to be King, and the He Lives in You reprise, the songs in the show just don't slap in the way that I really hoped they would based on the hype surrounding the show. There are some really golden moments (the He Lives in You reprise when all the dancers are revealed in the back is so good!!) but they're too few and far between IMO!
The way my New York ass woulda shushed those women 😂 I had my own bad experience on my last visit to the Kit Kat Klub. I was walking through the bar area to head to my seat, and as I passed by a lady talking to her friends suddenly spun around and right into me, spilling her drink down my back. Not a huge deal, I'm not someone who would freak over a shirt. As a Midwest native I even reflexively said "excuse me," as we do at an sort of bumping regardless of fault. The woman went absolutely bats hit and started screaming at me about her drink being 15 pounds. I wss like, "Ma'am, you turned into ME, how could I be walking forward yet knock your drink onto my back?" She literally expected me to replace the drink she spilled onto me, what a nut.
jesus, sorry that happened!! I unfortunately just am not surprised. People seem to think that because *they're* at the theatre, they're better than everyone around them - whether you're sitting next to them or passing them in the lobby or just queueing to get inside! It's ridiculous and seems to lead to endless moments like yours and mine :(
Would be great to get a similar video with plays as well! I went into Hamilton knowing nothing and was surprised I didn’t miss a single word. I enjoyed Come From Away and Bonnie & Clyde, not sure if it’s something I’d go back to see though. Out of the shows I’ve seen in this list, I wouldn’t disagree too much other than maybe Lion King. Watched that 15-16 years ago so can’t quite remember much of the staged version. I haven’t seen Cabaret but it’s something I really want to see though. Such a shame about those two people that ruined it. Theatres are in an awkward position, they don’t want people to have bad experiences which may be caused by others drinking excessively but then that’s probably where they make a lot of their money.
I agree with you on The Lion King, I feel like its very very overrated. I loved the art to it and the puppets are incredible but the content of the show itself and the music isn’t the best, Disney has a lot better than The Lion King. Six is also massively overrated in my opinion, it has some really hardcore fans and I don’t wanna be attack by them online but if it wasn’t for the fact that what’s on stage awards are fan voted, they never would’ve won best west end show, simply because it’s not the best west end show (if any six fans are reading this please don’t kill me I like it I’ve seen it twice but let’s be honest, it is not the best thing to exist on the west end right now 😂)
I too fear the wrath of the SIX stans - I love that they love the show (and wouldn't ever want to take that away for them), but think there's also gotta be room for people like you and I to not love it and still avoid the guillotine hahah 😅
I liked SIX but there were a fair number of drunk women there, too, which impacted my ability to fully enjoy the experience. I think some shows (like "Cabaret" as you mention) pull in a certain type of audience that may be predisposed to behaviors that are not ideal for communal events.
On what planet, and I haven’t watched through all of the video, can Standing at the Sky’s Edge and Newsies both be S tier?? Newsies is C tier for me. Great choreography, one catchy tune but forgettable lyrics
Loved this. Glad you put Come From Away in the A tier. I saw it twice and would have gone again but didn’t realise it’s left the West End now 😞. It’s fabulous. No musical has touched my heart like that one did. It’s too bad that you didn’t see Jesus Christ Superstar at Regent’s Park. Definitely 5 star. Thought the Dear Evan Hansen was definitely overrated. Missed Standing- tried for tickets after your review and it was sold out. But it’s coming to the Gillian Lynne next year I think. Missed a few of these that I should have seen. Wish I’d seen & Juliet but debated it for too long and then it left! Are you going to Crazy for You? Btw I think one thing we’ve learned from this is don’t see musicals in LA! 😂. Maybe see Hamilton again in the West End? I think it’s 5 star - at least with the original cast when I saw it. One vote for having you do this for straight plays!
I've heard heaps of good things about Jesus Christ Superstar, if it ever makes its way back I'll be first in line for tickets haha! Standing is at the Gillian Lynne next year, yeah - a must-see for sure and I think the stage in that theatre is a really perfect fit for it, as much of the production is quite 'omnidirectional' rather than all being very front-facing. And yeah, I guess the lesson really is that musicals in LA are.. not great hahah
The fact newsies is an S teir show even with sound issues just shows how good it is

I hope you watch Six! Again and get the real experience. I went to nyc for my first time this year and it was by far the favorite out of what I saw.
So sorry that the lights went off durning Six and that your seat wasn’t good. I hope you see it again with a much better experience. It an amazing experience if everything goes well. 😢 I would be disappointed as well.

ALW’s Cinderella is closing on Broadway! This aged well, haha!
Milo you didn’t wake up and choose violence you woke up and chose death
Have you seen all shook up?
If not it’s really good (in my opinion at least)
Lion King in overrated is a heinous crime

One of my favorite zombies UA-camrs is a theater kid. This makes me very happy. 😊
ahaha you found my secret side project! Don't tell the others 😈😅
id love your take on beetlejuice :P

Omg I'm so glad I know someone else who didn't like lion king, I've always been slaughtered for it it's good to know I'm not alone haha

Ok I can understand you thinking that Hamilton is b tier, that’s fine but HADESTOWN ONLY A IS UNACCEPTABLE
Standing in Sky was flat and dull
