    I love this custom build videos Johnny, thank you for making them. One thing I would really love to see more of is cable routing. Since it is likely going to be different for each bike, I would love a couple shots of anything custom you had to do. That, or modifications to make the motor fit. In this case, you mention you had to angle grind off something. I would love to have seen either a before and after, or at least just a closeup after the install showing what you did. Anyway, thanks again - your channel is full of great knowledge and I really appreciate your customer service. (My girlfriend and I bought two motors and a t-shirt from you - we love them SO much!) Keep it up man!

    I have the same build with a BBSHD 72V Eggrider. 42t/42t the bike screams up hills. Eggrider is great to turn it all down to 250w or whatever wattage I want and make it an awesome pedal bike from 4000w throttle bike.
    Careful with that battery mount I have cracked my plastic on either side of the center steel bar from bouncing around. I still wrap mine on another bike with a Velcro strap for safety. Full suspension you can’t beat it! Nice build and as excited as you are about it I can only reiterate the same feeling.

    I am very much enjoying my hub drive, but watching your vids with the hill climbing on its own in particular with far less weight compared to what you’d need to match the mid drive is very attractive. And the super fun customizable performance with simply changing a chainring size front or back is causing me to want that instead of upgrading my hub motor in the near future. Thanks Johnny.
    That’s one sweet bike with full suspension too. 👍

    Did a similar conversation on 2016 Trek Fuel Ex 29 large frame. Used BBSHD and 52V, 20.5 AH battery. No grinding but needed a bottom bracket adapter and had to modify cassette due chainline. Mine uses a 46 tooth chainring and can reach 44mph. Still climbs well with 11-40 rear cassette but its flat here so I geared for OFF ROAD speed.

    After watching you for two years, my choice from your training (before this video was published) is a Bafang 750W BBSO2 and a 52W 17.5Ah battery. 27.5 tires, Old Specialized Large frame, gear sensor, mechanical disk brakes, etc. All the things that your videos led me to decide. Thank you.
    I was amazed when I saw this video today. Your selection of components matches my selection from your training. I even bought the used Specialized bike per your videos on what bike is best to buy.
    I do have one slits problem. The motor intermittently cuts out just a little from time to time, and only for a split second. I finished the build three days ago so I am a newbie. I wonder if that is because my brake sensors or gear sensors are to tight. Or whatever.
    Thanks for all you do.

    does it still wheelie with your feet (and weight) on the pedals? your whole body is sliding backwards, I'm just curious why this strange position, which is the best recipe for a crash btw. like one of the most commone mistakes for bike or motorcycle beginners, you freak out, and instead of holding the bike, get your feet off the pedals/pegs, then you lose all stability, and actually crash. I think even with your feet on the pedal we can still figure out if you're pedalling/trying to help the motor or not, if that's your concern

    • @bjnslc
      @bjnslc 2 роки тому

      I'm pretty sure that's a trademarked riding position to show that there's no human power at play in the short hill climb demos.

    • @geemy9675
      @geemy9675 2 роки тому

      @@bjnslc thanks. I think I've seen it a few times, but still don't understand how you could power a bike by standing on the pedals if you're not actually spinning them, unless you're superhuman, had an infinitely quick engagement clutch and you could push the pedals back and forth 30 times/second 🤣, or maybe edit the video ? . I get it that its the signature and the whole thing is to emphasize the 0mph torque (and to sell mid drives). so if the bike can climb with no pedaling, it will climb even better when you pedal, plus it's repeatable. but it would be nice to see a bit more real-life situations and at some point, trying that hard to convince people that all hub motors are junk and that even non DIY mid drives are really inferior, sounds too biased. but its still a good source of information, and somehow entertaining!

Some times you may have to grind your frame some. I’ve seen people grind off the factory piece the kick stand bolts to oh well. Loving it Johnny

    The bbs02 does peak at like 1300watts, which isn't that far off the 1500watt peak of the bbshd. I think it's that 120nm of torque that pushes it past the hub drive setups. I run a bbshd and can say the 160nm of torque might be a little too much for mountain bike applications.

Bit of a waste of all that travel but who cares about efficiency when you got an extra 750-1000 watts of power and sofa like comfort. Problem is there isn't anywhere obvious places to mount the battery, if you're familiar with the frame would like your opinion, otherwise I'll be going for the seat post frog battery route i guess.

    It is interesting that even with a large battery rear and front shocks. Your conversion bike is probably 20% lighter than most prebuilt Ebikes.
    Probably because you are starting off with a better bike.
    But as you said be prepared to run into minor issues that you must work around.

    • @geemy9675
      @geemy9675 2 роки тому +1

      what ebikes are you comparing against? the Marin Rift Zone 1 is a proper trail mountain bike, although at the VERY bottom of the category. its 33.7lbs without pedals, 130/125mm travel, so clearly not the lightest and probably not the best choice if your going to convert it and make it almost twice as heavy/expensive. it would be more balanced to use a slightly better mtb to start with, and lighter/less powerful mid drive/battery kit.
      BBS02 is 12 pounds with the kit. battery is 9.4 lbs. that's 55.5lbs without even counting the rest of the kit and it's still a light duty trail mtb with a flexy 32mm fork, noname wheelset
      cost of the build is just slightly over $3k, so its cheaper than almost any known brand emtb
      budget emtb will be more expensive, around $4-4.5k, have less battery/torque/power, but are lighter around 50-55lbs, including more suspension travel, wider/stronger/better quality wheels, better components all around, a dropper seat. trying to match that on this build would bring a lot of additional weight.
      Also on prebuilt emtb, battery is properly fixed to or inside the frame, protected, and so is the motor, so they are just better for the job (dedicated emtb), will be faster and more reliable on mtb trails. but the elephant in the room is the lack of torque sensor wich is a big no for a proper eMTB. if you want to enjoy the best part of using an emtb (climbing) you need to be able to modulate the power very precisely, unless you are only climbing fire roads
      But if you want an hybrid bike that will be faster on the road/gravel, comfortable with full suspension, and can also tackle some mild trails with less commitment, then it looks great.
      my dream build would be converting my current all mountain mtb with a lightweight torque sensing mid drive, figure out a very sturdy battery mount, and have one lighweight battery with current strong trail/enduro wheels + downhill tires, for proper MTB and a second larger battery with more capacity/voltage/power for higher speed, with a lighter/cheaper set of XC/gravel/hybrid wheels mounted with better rolling hybrid tires, and a narrower range cassette.
      Ideally, motor could also be removed relatively quickly and simply for only pedal powered group rides, or even for a bike park with lifts
      ..unfortunately my bike is 2010 with 26 wheels, not using current standards(QR in the back, outdated non boost 20x110 in the front), and little room inside the triangle for a big battery, rear chainstay pivot point is only 1-2mm from the bottom bracket, etc
      also still trying to figure out if I really want to invest that much money, time and effort on a 12yo mtb, the choice for torque sensing mid drive kits is VERY small (mostly tongsheng tsdz2, sold on ebay or alibaba 😕)
      I was thinking small battery inside the frame and additional battery under the down tube for higher combined capacity. if it was possible to lock a battery, I could see myself ride to the trail with two batteries, remove one battery and lock it close to the trailhead, and put it back on my way home...

      @@bindingcurve unfortunately not really considering prebuilt emtb at the moment because of the price but I appreciate how clean they are with internally routed cables, and battery integrated in the frame I'm not into XC either, so no e caliber for me, but in 2022 some really nice lightweight trail emtb under 40 lbs even using more "traditionnal" mid drives mounted around the bottom bracket, have been released like trek fuel EXe, although the harmonic gear reduction is. quite a novelty for lightweight and compact mid drive (under 2kg) . also, it's completely sold out at $11k....

    Hey Johnny came out here to thank you for your video contributions. Stumbled across your videos about a year and a bit ago and between you and Micah from e-bike battery school I learned 90 percent of what it takes to build these.
    I have successfully completed my 3rd e-bike build (battery pack and bike) and love riding it to work instead of driving.
    It’s hard to justify spending 800$ plus per bike when you can buy prebuilt for cheaper but going this route of making them has been the correct choice. Getting parts for these is an absolute breeze. There are endless forums going over the different issues you may have and the programming cable is a game changer.

    Hey There @JohnnyNerdOut I Recently purchased a marlin rift zone 1 29 inch and i was looking a the diffrence of the dimensions between the 27.5 and such and there wasnt really that much of a diffrence. Although I was curious about your opinion on a few options for instance -the chain length is 425 I beleive and this one both in a Large are 430 with 5mm i beleive of a diffrence or roughtly 0.2 inches. If I were to install a bbs02 lekkie cover to make the diffrence with a 36 tooth chainring like reccomended do you think i would be fine ? Also im pretty sure the Battery clearance is the same as well so I will purchase a battery as well. Other diffrence i noticed was that the hydraluc brake rottors are 180mm vs 160mm for the kit and curious if i could rotors i have on there and use the same kit ?

    just finished a scott genius with rear remote control shocks .traction control.trail mode,and hardtail ,front 29 downhill air shocks ,with 250w tongsheng mid drive with 34 amp hour battery, de restriceded flying machine, just done 15,000 miles on a scott fx1 with a tongsheng mid drive still going strong,doing 350 miles per week saveing myself £80 per week in petrol,and i am as fit as a butchers dog,and i am 73 years of age ,just split a saracen down hill mtb in half ,had it back on the road in 4 hours,the down time on these bikes are very low and very cheap to repair,keep up the good work johnny ps keep away from shop bikes you will need to buy 2 to keep them going,the miles i do ,a shop bike would be to unreliable,i update my blkes all of the time.never spent more than £700 on any of my bikes for full build and i have 13 differant e mtb

    Johnny, why is that Bafang/most mid drive systems allow one to utilize up to 52V instead of 72, or more volts? I only ask as I’d like to be able to fit in many more amps of battery in the same size battery instead of adding 2 big batteries in order to get the same capacity of range 1 would do having 72V.

    I'd like to convert my old full suspension Cannondale, but I'd really like a torque-sensing motor. My BBSO2 isn't very natural feeling and for any kind of technical riding the abrupt power initiation puts me off. The new CYC Stealth Gen 3 has some appeal, but $$$ and questions about reliability. Is Tongsheng worth considering at all?

    I've never had an Ebike before which is why I might ask questions or make statements that to a seasoned Pro sounds stupid but that's because I'm gathering information and doing research but does anybody ever put the battery under that bar yours is on top of or is there just not enough room under there or it's too exposed because I'm thinking lower center of gravity the lower the better would be the best configuration so what is your opinion on battery placement being something other than the typical place where yours is or even further forward to keep the front end down because I don't want to end up on my ass (I'm just too old for that shit)

The other bikes with no motor or hub motors where I took the crank arm off to install the pedal assist or just to see if it would come off, came off no problem but of course when I need it off the most, it doesn't come off.

    I hear you, have 2000w hub,pretty fast,72v, but hub heavy, constantly breaking spokes, have to constantly tighten 😫 spokes, battery heavy too. My next bike I'm going with the 750w bafang, and when ever I get enough extra 💰 🤑 start picking up extra batteries. I'm sure you are aware that you can buy a USB that hooks up to controller plug and make it so it has a 1500w peak, and you can up amps like 5, I'm not sure if it will have160nm, but 120nm or 140newton meters would still be cool, and they are dirt cheap right now, compared to the 1000w, but I ramble on, your bike is sweet, bro, happy trails to you my friend 😀
