Trevor has this serene calm about him when he's interviewing others. He is above all respectful. I have never, likely never will hear him say something to make his audience member uncomfortable. And if they are uncomfortable, he does his best to avoid making it worse or just outright alleviating it while asking the questions that need to be asked. I really enjoyed hearing Miss Arie speak. She makes wonderful music and she comes across as a sincere person.

This conversation allowed people to appreciate the intersectionality of racism and sexism that black women face and the implied violence that racialized words can hold for us. When people demonstrate who they are, you have to believe them. If they care about how you feel, it’s their responsibility to behave differently. Choosing not to trust their apology is not "casting them out”. It’s self-preservation. As a black woman moving through violent, white male dominated spaces, I don’t have the luxury of doing otherwise. Yes India! Hold on to your truth!

I respect everything that Trevor was saying in regard to Joe Rogan but my thing is that he didn't stop using the N word in his podcast because he knew people were listening and he realized it was wrong. He stopped because he realized people were listening and he knew continuing to use it would threaten that audience that he built. People should be allowed to grow and change and receive redemption if they hold themselves fully accountable. Joe didn't do that. he minimized the things he said or claimed that it he didn't mean what we think he meant. And he didn't lead his audience to recognizing that using the N word is wrong. He gave them the idea that using racist language is not a big enough to deal to warrant losing one's platform. They were in his comments saying that he had nothing to apologize for. India is so correct. If Joe wants to prove that he is not a racist, he needs to be actively anti racist and be fully accountable to his past racism.

I was raised in an environment where racism was normalized. As an adult, I became aware of unconscious, racist thoughts in my own head. I'm learning to do the work, but it's something I'll probably always be working on.

I really want Mr. Rogan to engage in a thoughtful conversation about racism. I think he either doesn't care about the fact that his celebrity presence carries weight and that there can be serious consequences for harmful remarks or he is mercifully hoping to deflect all of this and go his way and earn his dollar.
If his remark about "Planet of the Apes" was made to simply amuse some friends I would like him to consider the following questions:
      1. Would you have felt comfortable tossing out that remark if you had been with friends who were Black? Or Asian? Or maybe even all-female? If so, why? And if not, why?
This is exactly what systemic racism is. And we have to understand just how deeply embedded these ideas are and how they still do REAL DAMAGE to people.

@@EricBarthDev There is no such thing as “ not realizing you have a choice” especially when it comes to racism, everyone was born with a conscience, the sense of right and wrong. If a person is engaging in racism, it’s because they choose to. Unfortunately people are cowardly and choose to move with the herd because they don’t have the courage to break away from it or they benefit from being apart of it.
Since Racism is known nationwide , why do AA think that when white people say racist things , it’s unconscious? At this point if white people are saying racist things it’s because they choose not to educate themselves on this nationally known ideology within their community. Why is it incumbent upon AA to teach them about racism when they have the free will to educate themselves about it, but they chose not to? The coddling is ridiculous. If white people aren’t collectively okay with racism, then they would be proactive in educating themselves about it, this way you won’t have to feign ignorance when you get caught saying or doing something racist, you’ll already know what racism is, and hopefully you’ll have enough respect and dignity not to engage in it periodt.
The only racial demographic who can solve racism is white people…seeing as they created the ideology to benefit themselves.

I just love how this interview felt so much more like a conversation. Of course, the entertainment media loves its "frienemies" conflicts between two recognizable names--it sells advertising. Meanwhile older artists are selling their work to investors as they reach retirement age.
As far as getting out a message, before the internet, a political party who could fit their message on a bumpersticker or the front of a foam trucker's hat or a T shirt, did well with a crowd of voters who didn't want to listen to a five minute policy-wonk speech. These were voters who didn't want government in their lives, so they were not interested in a government plan for them. It's still everywhere and everybody is capable of it and has to be called out.

Outside of a ratings context, Joe Rogan doesn't care at all about the storm he caused calling black people apes. In fact, he has received a huge reward for it both financially and mentally. If you've watched the show in the recent years, you'll notice behaviorally he's been testing the broadness of his influence and power for quite some time. He'll say outlandish things and then pretend to defend them. You'll notice that these tests are seldom socially meaningful. But mentally, continual gratification is what success can look like to the ego. For Spotify, It has become super easy to fleece this influence and power, because these are his thoughts and imaginations. Joe Rogan is saying the quiet part out loud. Joe Rogan is performing the script that is in his head. The subsequent ratings and ego inflation are the single monetized measurement of his success. This is the internal path to feeling like you've made it - to thinking to earn more, you must go further. You must show your dominance over your experiences. You must show your dominance over all other classes within your stratum. And this is mostly done by insult.

Rogan realized that saying the n-word wasn't okay years ago and so he stopped doing it. In fact, there was a specific moment where it was said on his show (at his urging to prove a point) when he realized it was wrong and so he stopped. You know who would've been more than happy to have a "messy conversation" about this? Joe Rogan. But this... just using Rogan to flit around for attention from people who have adopted a groupthink attitude is just preaching to the choir. This is all just fake outrage. Had she TRULY been bothered, she would've reached out to Rogan and requested an interview. Heck... she could still do that now if she wanted to... but that wouldn't work for her because her only real goal is to get pats on the back and say a bunch of nonsense that's only true in her head. I seriously can't believe people are falling for what she's doing.

I'm not riding Joe's junk... I mean, how old are you for saying that? 14? It's just nonsense. India shared an edited video so that she could take advantage of the situation and get some attention. That didn't really work, so she said that he wasn't racist. That didn't sit well with the anti-Rogan crowd, so she complained about her "evil" music label not taking her music off Spotify. And now she's going back from what she said and saying that Rogan is "consciously racist." It's all about getting attention. The funny thing is that she's trying to make more money by using a "consciously racist" person to do it.

Future conversions on his show on white privilege and unconscious bias would be super helpful and totally in line with being a place for open conversation BUT.. he probably knows this is not what his audience wants to hear. That is the elephant in the room here. Joe may/may not be racist but he knows that many of his listeners either are racist or are ok with racist behavior, at a bare minimum finding it amusing, so he engages with it to benefit from racism. Multiple figures in the media do this. It's wrong but it works for them financially. That's what's on the line. Money.

That is the key. Artists pull your work from the platform. Even though it may be a challenge as India.Arie mentioned. With a new platform, they have found a way to exploit artists again. The shame is that many of these artists' works will become part of the library of our culture. While at the same time, most of these podcasts will end up in the garbage bin of history; mountains of forgotten and mostly meaningless conversations.
I've always liked India.Arie's music, I had no idea of what a beautiful soul she was until this interview. More importantly, I love the way this was presented and discussed.

I find it difficult to say the same about Joe Rogan, Spotify, or the social infrastructure that creates and feeds them. We will progress if the ignorant seek understanding and awareness. Maya Angelou is one of my heroes as well and the work of therapy is of course to learn to tell the truth--to say what you're most afraid to say--so it feels serendipitous to hear how she gave you the mantra that's become your guiding star. That has basically always been the textbook definition, right? That, or having the belief that one race is superior to another, or that one race is inferior to another.
She said there is no context in which a white person can use the n-word. So, talking about taking free speech from a white individual based on the color of their skin is the racism I believe she supports.
Popular speech never needed defending. Unpopular speech is what needs defense. The best disinfectant is sunlight.
Why do you think patriots would support burning the flag? It is important for the people to be heard. No matter the message.
Let's say Rogan is racist. If he never said the n-word then none of this would matter, right? The cancel culture thing, anyway. No one was trying to take him off before the "misinformation" campaign, or this n-word controversy. And misinformation is proven to be spewed by FOX, CNN, and all the other mainstream media, too. And if you have ever seen the news unfairly portray blacks in a negative light, you might say they were racist, as well...
If he never said it, his podcasts would be pretty much the same, right? They just wouldn't contain that word. And if his views would still be the same, what is the difference? Very profound point Trevor made regarding our society not having a framework to not allow people to be wrong or inappropriate when it comes to racism or discrimination. Does society give us an option to not be a racist, sexist, misogynist or a xenophobe?
What if people lost their badges or privileges if they chose not to have any humility or if they were less of a human? What if their actions were looked down upon? Why aren’t there consequences for it? It’s really harmful to not have this conversation. It’s damaging to not look at all of the implications and the racial traumas and stresses and all of it’s complexities which are
difficult because of the insidious nature of racism, and the disregard for the nondominant cultural experience.
Clearly, the psychological effects of racism is harmful on both ends, and we never move forward and grow from it, collectively. We never really grow from all of these deficiencies which keeps us apart and further from the truth.
