Hi, my name is Dr. Elizabeth Gaughan, and I am the lead of the clinical and translational research teams at UVA. I take care of patients who have advanced melanoma and advanced skin cancers, and we usually use immunotherapy and other medical treatments for these diseases. Medicine was really a great combination of my interests in science and also in serving the community and serving people.
I'm passionate about watching people get better. I love to take patients and families through this journey and know what's on the other side and watch them experience the benefits that our newer treatments have to offer. I wish it happened for every patient that I took care of, and that just only drives me to continue working.
The treatment of cancer, specifically melanoma, has become so much more complex in the last ten years, and there are a lot more developments to come. I think the best part of UVA is the multidisciplinary approach. We have so many people that are involved in the care of patients with cancer that can help us make the best decisions. And it really is this multidisciplinary team that offers the most benefit to the patient.
