  • This is an interview with World War Two Veteran Mr. Haug who was in the 89th Infantry Division. He saw a lot of combat and in this episode he describes how he survived five bullets entering his body while he took part in the crossing of the Rhine River. He is now 99 years young. This is a WWII veteran interview about history.

      i think the greatest thing is to reach out and to find these hero's and document their stories. My grandfather who was a marine in ww2, story is lost. I wish i he had taken the time to share.

    My Dad also crossed the Rhine with the 89th that same day. He was my hero. I salute you sir.

      We lost a truly great generation. No way could our solution youth endure the sacrifice needed to win another world war. My grandfather made it through Italy, Normandy and was seriously wounded in the battle of the bulge. He survived the war and died in his early 70's.

    Shot five times by a machinegun then afterwards told to inhale a cigarette deeply once brought into the operating room. Move over Superman, Mr. Haug is the true Man of Steel........

      It's amazing he survived,, because injuries like that requires trauma care ASAP ,, you hear surgeon's from the Shock Trauma unit in Baltimore University of Maryland talk about the Golden hour,, this veteran has my respect that's for sure bless him ,, veterans like him will never be forgotten,, brave and tough.

    My father quit high school in his Senior year to fight in WW ll after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Thank you Mr Haug for your service to keep America free. We owe our lives to you and all these courageous men.

      I served in Nam with Aussies. They were great men. Later I partied in Hong Kong with a few of them. I learned then to Never get in a beer drinking bout with an Aussie. You will lose.

    My uncle Tren Hirschi, (ironically our family is of german decent), landed on Omaha beach. My father, Orell Hirschi, was drafted during the Korean war. They never spoke a word about their experiences. Words cannot express the gratitude and patriotism that your sacrifices have instilled in me. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. You’re a miracle. Love you veterans.

    when I see videos like this I always think back to that Saving private Ryan scene where Miller tells Ryan to "earn this", and I remember that, that line is basically meant for us, to earn what they payed so dearly for.       Well said. Too few these days remember what they did for all of us. I fear that ignorance will pave the way to having to another even larger war, and I am not at all certain the young generation have what it takes to sacrifice for the good of the United States.

    Thank you, Mr. Haug for sharing your story. My Dad died in 1965 when I was only 14, and he never talked about the War. Listening to your story helps me understand where I come from a little better, and understand what my Dad went through. Much appreciated, and thank you for your service.

    I’m 50 now, my uncle, whom is passed on now was serving in Belgium with the Canadian military around 1940, until he was shot in the ankle by a German sniper. He used to limp on it all the time, plus he was overweight from not being mobile. The bullet shattered his ankle. I’ll always remember him telling me about it when I was a young boy.

    What an amazing moment in time he shared with us here. I fought in Iraq and Afghanistan and the humanity is rarely looked at let alone discuss. Most who suffered like this Hero did rarely ever talk about it. We are blessed for this life and grateful for him sharing his experience. Thank you from one Infantryman to another.

      Cometh the hour cometh the man, he almost died and yet he talks so modestly of his contribution in battle that probably saved a number of his buddies from also being wounded or killed. I find it hard to describe him even the title hero just doesn’t seem high enough praise.

    God bless you Mr. Haug! I am grateful that you went over there, and even more grateful that you came home and have lived a long life in spite of your wounds. My grandfather died in 1957 from his war wounds. There is no way we can thank you men enough for your sacrifice, but we will never EVER forget what you did for us!

    I can't imagine how these heroes view the terrible behaviour of those people who are trying to destroy our rites and freedoms that they fought (and died for)

    Sometimes a “Thank You”,or a Medal,a hug,or even reverence aren’t enough.Sometimes you just have to stand in awe of someone who has done so much more for what we have than you’ll be ever able to do.As screwed up as I see people acting nowadays,I hope that we are still able to produce Americans like this,because without them those that want those freedoms to act crazy will have a real wake up call to the real world.

    I watch a lot of the WWII Veteran interviews and am always so impressed by their toughness, humility, resolve and grit. They are truly a unique generation that is fading away way to fast for me. It's terribly depressing when I think of how moronic today's youth are and they will never have the opportunity to meet and learn from these special Veterans.

    Sir, my grandfather was there, too. He was hit six times on the Remagen Bridge but lived. He has since passed, but I thank you beyond words for being there with him and telling us of the almost inhuman sacrifices and courage it took to protect us who were yet to be born.

    I'm 68 years old, when I hear of men like Mr. Haug and hear their story, I think that I never had a bad day in my whole life. Many Thanks to this entire generation. What suffering was endured to save this country and the world. My Mom and Dad are both WW II vets.

    I was on the edge of my phone until the last 30 seconds, then laughing and crying with wet tears. Wish I knew him in this World. My dad was in the Pacific, regretting I didn't get him to talk more.

    What I cant help but notice is that this man could stand a little financial aide, can we facilitate that somehow? I mean, come on, if we all gave him $1 it would change his life. How do we do this?

    My wife's dad is 96 combat vet. And his 5 children never heard 1 war storie. He never brought it up and they never asked questions. And my fellings about the man is he is a hero.

    One of my family members served in World War II. He fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima and was shot in the head by a Japanese Soldier. He was lucky enough for the shot not to kill him and he was found in cave in Iwo Jima. He was rescued and lucky survived. After the war he became a lawyer.

    Imagine carrying that story with you through your 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's.... every day at work, every trip to the grocery store, every time you're stuck in traffic and someone flips you off. I just can't fathom how that experience would impact a young adult for the rest of their life. Especially having it happen in the WW2 setting. People are amazing.

    Amazing story. You have to be incredibly strong to live through that and also live this long after it happened. Quite unbelievable. I love hearing stories from WWII. No number of movies can ever capture and convey the reality of that war.

    Mr. Haug, you are a living testament to the greatest generation this country has ever known. There are not enough words to express the debt of gratitude you are owed. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your service, and for the selfless sacrifices you made in WW2. It is an honor and a privilege to share in your story through your recorded account.     Mr Haug thank you sir!!! I’m gonna have to relisten to this unfortunately, I was working and listening and sadly I missed most of the good stuff haha I’ll edit this once I’m actually informed. It’s crazy to hear you found a “neighbor” by accident in one of the nurses!! Definitely interested, hopefully you found her after the war.
