My Grandad never fought in the war because he was a coal miner in Yorkshire, England. But his brothers did. One of his brothers was just a few weeks away from surviving the war. He landed on the beaches on D-Day and fought through northern Europe, but was killed in the Netherlands. I get really emotional when seeing surviving WW2 veterans living a good life. They are all amazing for what they did. Too many people don't fully appreciate the scale of the victory and the fact that we can never fully thank them for it.
Your loss of your Uncle is painful still. I lost an Uncle it is as well. I was never allowed to ask anything about WWII to my relatives, but I wish I would have broken that rule just to let them know that I appriciated them. You are right in saying that we can never fully thank them for it.
Similar story, my great-grandfather was a coal miner in Lancashire and didn't fight in the war and my other great-grandfather landed on the beaches during the D-Day operation, he suffered shell shock only a week later though and was sent home.
Then he died to liberate my people. I cannot express how grateful I am that these young men gave their lives for us, for my grandparents and their parents. It will not be forgotten. Greetings from Amsterdam!
I liked the other guys thoughts about that though. He obviously meant that they had all those years when their fallen comrads had not. But seeing what really old age does to people is always a bit depressing.

anyone who chucks their parents in a nursing home should hang their head in shame. No matter how well or NOT well I do in life, I ain't putting them in a home that's for damn sure..
@@TheShubbah I can understand for a few reasons. Working in hospice care, some parents are going through terrible dementia and alzheimers. Along with heart breaking, it's a full time job, which some children in their 30's can't handle, and it is especially bad if they have young children to see grandma/grandpa spiral down this hill. Othertimes, the child is also old and needs assisted care and is unable to take care of their parent. One that I took care of had a daughter who was stuck in a wheelchair after a car accident, she sent her mom to a nursing home since she had a stroke and needed to be lifted up off the bed and fed before being put back. It's heartbreaking, but in cases like these it's understandable.
@@ChakraX2 you are very right mate, I'll admit I was talking about the people who aren't in those types of situations. My grandfather was a ww2 vet in the south Pacific, he arrived in Hiroshima 2 wks after the bombing, his stories traumatized me, this story reminds me of the stories my grandfather told me of his Bros in arms that experienced what he did.
This is really sad. My grandpa, a WWII vet, is going to be 97 in February. He's incredibly with it for his age. I wouldn't be surprised if he had another 20 in him. He's practically a celebrity every time we go out somewhere and he wears his veteran cap. I'm sure he would have gotten along swimmingly with these two gentlemen. Rest in peace, guys.
Honestly, it’s probably for the better, had they not passed at that time, they may never have gotten to meet, especially with COVID, so it’s good that they were able to
To anyone who help this vet get his wish--Thank you. To the vets themselves, we will never forget that you did your duty and we thank you for it. God bless you all.

I was in DC and at the WWII memorial and I saw a man in a wheelchair. His family was showing him the memorial. I don't know exactly why, but I asked to tell him thank you for his service. The man started crying. I knelt down and held his hand, speaking of my appreciation for all who served and that I was unable to tell my own Uncle this as we weren't allowed to bring the subject up. IMO, after taking care of many elderly people as a LPN/RN in several nursing homes/adult care facilities. It really isn't depression per se, it is more that they feel they have lived long enough,. Most of their friends and family their age are gone, they can't do much for themselves, sometimes feel like a burden to have to be cared for and are prepared for the end. I worked 2nd shift most of the time and spent many late evenings during slow times during shift to sit and talk with many 90 somethings+. It was very enlightening and was very glad I could give them some extra attention and one-on-one time, actually tried to do this with as many of the residents as time allowed. I truly hope the restrictions for nursing home visits are lifted soon because I bet there are many residents of these facilities who miss their family and friends. I can't imagine what it must be like for those who don't/can't understand why nobody can visit them.

There's a reason why veterans tend to stick together. Its a powerful experience that you go through, and then suddenly find yourself being unable to relate those ordinary people. When I returned from afghanistan, and was discharged from the marines, I found myself back in the civilian world and unable to connect with people. People even found my humorous stories to be dark and unpalatable...
Being forced to slaughter other human beings and really not comprehending the why? Just follwoing orders? Would drive anyone crazy and the "shared experience" bonds them the same way sharing drugs with others does
I worked and cared for so many veterans. I miss working with seniors so much. I remember I looked after the last veteran of ww2 in our area and I became his favorite care Giver. He would look for me everyday and call me the Bearded fella. I would do the same care with him for 2 years. His daughter would tell me when I had days off he would ask where I was and she'd say I was on a day off he'd always say what does he need that for haha. When I was younger I was in army cadets and knew a thing or 2 about uniforms. So when rememberance day came around I stayed up all night the night prior spit shining and polishing his parade boots. I got him up and I remember him being grouchy cause it was early. However once he saw how damn good I made him look he had the biggest smile on his face. He made a huge impact on my life and I miss him so much. However I know the time we had together was some of my best memories. Through thick and thin I was there with him till the day he passed. He was the first resident I paid my respects for at a funeral. What's nice is how his family has kept me in their lives and told me I'm part of their family now for all the dedication I did for their father.
@Glory Be To God Amen Why do you literally have to bring religion into everything. You could've just ended with "I hope he's in heaven.❤️" but *no* you had to continue for some reason, and start ranting.
thats pretty common actually, its called trauma bonding, anyone can do it with any trauma not just war. there are plenty living in your own country that have worse trauma than this old man.
@@uncleol possibly- yeah. It's not uncommon to think the only "trauma" or the main or worst trauma a person experience is physical. You have no idea how much psychological trauma can cause life long pain and anguish that a single bullet wound can't compare. At least with that bullet wound you had every opportunity to prepare during periods of war when everyone is getting shot. Try being abused your entire life since infancy and having hundreds or thousands of wounds inflicted on your newly developing neurology. You ever see The Joker movie with Joaquin Pheonix? That's the type of outcome we can see in that form of trauma. War trauma is similar but not always long lasting- afterall- you have comrades- you have teammates you have brothers in arms who are going through the SAME thing for support- plenty of people come back from war with no adverse conditions or are able to recover- but there are certain injuries you cant recover from. Most of the issues faced by vets are their lack of social supports and the fact that males are socially withdrawn from expressing their feelings. so they have no where to take those pains and are expected to suck it up- and thats how you end up with men turning to things like alcohol to cope. If you're curious about the subject I highly recommend a documentary called "The Wisdom of Trauma" by Dr Gabor Mate- he was born and raised during turmultuous world war 2 and shares what that experience does to the neuroanatomy of a small child.
@xeirux8911 good thing no one has come close to saying that. But I'm curious. A small child grown raised by a violent drunk, are we getting closer to war vet or is the only version of trauma you know involve violence? So if I abandoned my child in an airport. That's cool with you? How about tattoo? Your opinion of what is or isnt trauma is based on a very limited perspective.

I dont like old age and dying its scary
God bless everyone form that regeneration, they are truly a blessing. I hope both of them are doing well.
@@Officially_Nuts1234 and that’s okay. But we can’t be scared of something so natural forever. It’s okay to be afraid of death and old age, but don’t let it stop you from living your life and talking to those who have lived their lives to the fullest.

I've just lost my grandad..a veteran of the Korean war.he was so humble. He went to war and did his job, he came home to England back in 1954 and loved his wife unconditionally until she passed away. These people can't be forgotten 🙌

that's cool... though I would say you guys are his 'family' now 🙂
God liked that you did that for the veteran 🛐
Well have a nice thanksgiving this year!
Calvin Thank You, and have a good one yourself.
Any chance you know what kind of plans he flew?
My father passed away in 2020. 97 years young. A WWII vet fighting with the 48th Highlanders of Canada. He lost a leg at 20 in Italy.
He never complained. Like the 2 Marine Sergeants above. They were all tough as nails!!! God Bless them.
That generation is beyond the incredible. No complains, hard work, straight back. Your father is a hero and my country owes him a leg, it's important you know how much my people are grateful for men like him and how much you must be proud of your father. His sacrifice and those of many boys like him are the milestone of our troubled democracy. Thank you.
He got it good in Italy fighting incompetent Italian soldiers
My respect goes out to your father, he fought for the peace that was restored today. I am 12 however I still respect the army, I don’t care if people laugh at me, I’m respecting someone that saved other peoples lives and helped save the world. My deepest condolences go out to you, a great man indeed from what I hear, Canadians were ruthless back then!
@@diamondrobloxgamer8818 I feel you, 17 now, but i've had this dream of joining the Air forces, been laughed at many times, for not wanting "More", seems people nowadays only care for doctors and such "high tier jobs", but the other people who save lifes , being them soldiers, policemen, firefighters and many others, are laughted, looked upon.
Be yourself my guy, follow your dreams and dont let people's judgement be your fall!

Thank you for your service. Hey man, if the civvies out in the world cant, wont or dont understand then the guys down at the VFW will.
@sinz It's a shame indeed.
Being forced to slaughter other human beings and really not comprehending the why? Just follwoing orders? Would drive anyone crazy and the "shared experience" bonds them the same way sharing drugs with others does
If i were one of those community people i would have been very glad to talk stories with you. I'm proud of you, man.
Thank you for your service 👍👍

Two men with a bond that not many could understand.. thank you both for your service.. TRUE HEROES
thats pretty common actually, its called trauma bonding, anyone can do it with any trauma not just war. there are plenty living in your own country that have worse trauma than this old man.
@@CircmcisionIsChi1dAbus3 worse trauma than having a bullet through the neck?
@@CircmcisionIsChi1dAbus3 You're an idiot.
