thats pretty common actually, its called trauma bonding, anyone can do it with any trauma not just war. there are plenty living in your own country that have worse trauma than this old man.
@@CircumcisionIsChildAbuse worse trauma than having a bullet through the neck?
@@uncleol possibly- yeah. It's not uncommon to think the only "trauma" or the main or worst trauma a person experience is physical. You have no idea how much psychological trauma can cause life long pain and anguish that a single bullet wound can't compare. At least with that bullet wound you had every opportunity to prepare during periods of war when everyone is getting shot. Try being abused your entire life since infancy and having hundreds or thousands of wounds inflicted on your newly developing neurology.
You ever see The Joker movie with Joaquin Pheonix? That's the type of outcome we can see in that form of trauma. War trauma is similar but not always long lasting- afterall- you have comrades- you have teammates you have brothers in arms who are going through the SAME thing for support- plenty of people come back from war with no adverse conditions or are able to recover- but there are certain injuries you cant recover from. Most of the issues faced by vets are their lack of social supports and the fact that males are socially withdrawn from expressing their feelings. so they have no where to take those pains and are expected to suck it up- and thats how you end up with men turning to things like alcohol to cope.
If you're curious about the subject I highly recommend a documentary called "The Wisdom of Trauma" by Dr Gabor Mate- he was born and raised during turmultuous world war 2 and shares what that experience does to the neuroanatomy of a small child.
@xeirux8911 good thing no one has come close to saying that. But I'm curious. A small child grown raised by a violent drunk, are we getting closer to war vet or is the only version of trauma you know involve violence? So if I abandoned my child in an airport. That's cool with you? How about tattoo? Your opinion of what is or isnt trauma is based on a very limited perspective.

My Grandad never fought in the war because he was a coal miner in Yorkshire, England. But his brothers did. One of his brothers was just a few weeks away from surviving the war. He landed on the beaches on D-Day and fought through northern Europe, but was killed in the Netherlands. I get really emotional when seeing surviving WW2 veterans living a good life. They are all amazing for what they did. Too many people don't fully appreciate the scale of the victory and the fact that we can never fully thank them for it.
Your loss of your Uncle is painful still. I lost an Uncle it is as well. I was never allowed to ask anything about WWII to my relatives, but I wish I would have broken that rule just to let them know that I appriciated them. You are right in saying that we can never fully thank them for it.
Similar story, my great-grandfather was a coal miner in Lancashire and didn't fight in the war and my other great-grandfather landed on the beaches during the D-Day operation, he suffered shell shock only a week later though and was sent home.

I was in DC and at the WWII memorial and I saw a man in a wheelchair. His family was showing him the memorial. I don't know exactly why, but I asked to tell him thank you for his service. The man started crying. I knelt down and held his hand, speaking of my appreciation for all who served and that I was unable to tell my own Uncle this as we weren't allowed to bring the subject up. I asked if I could give him a hug and he agreed. I motioned his daughter aside and apologized for making him cry. She said that he had not spoken much about the war, but wanted to come here. I worked and cared for so many veterans. I miss working with seniors so much. I remember I looked after the last veteran of ww2 in our area and I became his favorite care Giver. He would look for me everyday and call me the Bearded fella. I would do the same care with him for 2 years. His daughter would tell me when I had days off he would ask where I was and she'd say I was on a day off he'd always say what does he need that for haha. When I was younger I was in army cadets and knew a thing or 2 about uniforms. So when rememberance day came around I stayed up all night the night prior spit shining and polishing his parade boots. I got him up and I remember him being grouchy cause it was early. However once he saw how damn good I made him look he had the biggest smile on his face. He made a huge impact on my life and I miss him so much. However I know the time we had together was some of my best memories. Through thick and thin I was there with him till the day he passed. He was the first resident I paid my respects for at a funeral. What's nice is how his family has kept me in their lives and told me I'm part of their family now for all the dedication I did for their father.

Along with heart breaking, it's a full time job, which some children in their 30's can't handle, and it is especially bad if they have young children to see grandma/grandpa spiral down this hill. Othertimes, the child is also old and needs assisted care and is unable to take care of their parent. One that I took care of had a daughter who was stuck in a wheelchair after a car accident, she sent her mom to a nursing home since she had a stroke and needed to be lifted up off the bed and fed before being put back. man this was sad. Imagine being so close to death and just wanting to talk to someone from a shared experience.Someone from your time.
RIP to both of them, I hope you meet each others in battle along with all your comrades.
My grandfather was a ww2 vet in the south Pacific, he arrived in Hiroshima 2 wks after the bombing, his stories traumatized me, this story reminds me of the stories my grandfather told me of his Bros in arms that experienced what he did.
They both were dead within 3 months of this 😭😭😭
Yea it made me cry, so sweet to see. Great for both of them, life is amazing.
someone from their line. literally front line badasses. God bless our Vets

They're not extinct in our hearts and in heaven, but on earth they're extinct
Heinrich Himmler yea and in america they just found one that hid his identity for decades and they just deported him back to Germany and Germany didnt even wanted him back. He’s 95 years old I believe.
There’s a man named Richard Overton in Austin that fought in world war 2 and he’s about 112. Surprised he’s still going strong.
@DSLR Films what exactly is 21st century rubbish talk?
my grandfather is alive, defended yugoslavia against the nazis
So wonderful they were able to get together and talk about their lives, brought tears to my eyes. All these men have seen and experienced is amazing. Salute you both!
This has to be the most heart warming thing ever to people who never meet but was on the same battle field talk together about the same battle absolutely legendary
The 92 year old looks like hes still going so good.
A lot can change in a year or two at that age!

I am glad this isn't fake news.
ThatUndeadLegacy ignore some of unjustified actions America has done aling with mainstream medias, but what is wrong with carring over a national war veteran?
Maybe they are but the lack of respect you have for a good person says a lot about you.
@ThatUndeadLegacy You just said he was a useless old fart
Fuck liberals
@ThatUndeadLegacy You literally said " useless old fart" How fucking stupid are you?
I so hope to make it into my 90s and still have my wits and humor. And be married for 71 years. What a beautiful life.

When he said “well life’s not so good rn” that actually broke my heart. Nothing is sadder to see someone near passing so depressed
well, he’s not near passing anymore sadly, I’m pretty sure he passed away. Honor for these veterans :)
I think he was more accepting rather than depressed.
@@glasses7577 he looked sadder than the other guy I’m not sure why, might’ve been nerves but he looked tired
IMO, after taking care of many elderly people as a LPN/RN in several nursing homes/adult care facilities. It really isn't depression per se, it is more that they feel they have lived long enough,. Most of their friends and family their age are gone, they can't do much for themselves, sometimes feel like a burden to have to be cared for and are prepared for the end. I worked 2nd shift most of the time and spent many late evenings during slow times during shift to sit and talk with many 90 somethings+. It was very enlightening and was very glad I could give them some extra attention and one-on-one time, actually tried to do this with as many of the residents as time allowed. I truly hope the restrictions for nursing home visits are lifted soon because I bet there are many residents of these facilities who miss their family and friends. I can't imagine what it must be like for those who don't/can't understand why nobody can visit them.
@@wendeln92 Bless your soul. It already takes a lot to do what you do and yet you still go the extra mile for your patients. I just wanted to take the time to write this and to thank you for your hard work. Take care out there!
