  • The Power Macintosh 8100 of the mid-90’s has been my most sought-after Mac for many years, so I decided to do a video about it despite there not being any audience demand or interest in such a video.
Please enjoy this awesome content from outside the tube:
The Thing is (Apple Tech Podcast) thethingis.lib...
    Cornica www.cornica.org
    Mac-museum www.mac-museum...
And don't forget to celebrate Retro Macintosh month with "MARCHintosh" this March and every March.

Definitely more 'for' than 'against' the old camera look in the feedback. I'm glad people aren't stuck on wanting HD, because it's a much easier to frame shots and focus on the subject with the more narrow aspect.

@@65scribe hey just a suggestion: I'm using a modern"ish" computer with my old Acer CRT from the early 2000s (works great, vibrant colors) and most videos, even when the "actual" video is in 4:3, is RENDERED in 16:9:
your camera shots and most of the archival footage you use are in this video are already in4:3 (except from 1:16 til 5:00 or so), so why not making the whole video in 4:3 at that point? You would be the first (and only to my knowledge) retrocomputer UA-camr to do so since the advent of HD UA-cam!

In addition to being an amazing day just because 65scribe posted a video, I had an incredible discovery watching it and I want to share my story with you all: I live in Brazil, and since I was a child I was very fond of apple, but, as you can imagine, it’s not easy to find old devices around here. When I was 16, in 2013, I found a guy in my city on the internet selling an iMac G3 from the first month of manufacture with the original mouse and keyboard. I got there and found out he was an accumulator, living with his grandmother and she wanted him to get rid of all the “trash in her house”. At the time, everything I knew about Apple was very mainstream, so all I was interested in was seeing the iMac G3 working. But as the guy needed to get rid of a lot, he looked at me and said: hey, if you like vintage macs, I have a powermac here that i know nothing about, I don't have a mouse or keyboard for it, I don't know if it works or not, and if you want it is yours, free of charge.
I wanted, he gave me the computer and a VGA adapter. I brought it home, found a site of old macs software, downloaded System 7, burned it to a CD and boot it. The computer turned on, everything seemed to be working, but since I didn't have the ADB mouse or keyboard and finding used ones around here is an impossible mission, I couldn't do anything except watch that old computer powered on and its noise. I turned everything off, wrapped the computer in plastic and kept it for all these years, to remember about it today and, while watching the video, unroll it from the plastic to find out that I have a perfectly functional PowerMac 8100/100 at home, in Brazil, with all drive bezels and in good cosmetic condition.
Now I'm very excited to open it and clean it well, since today I know more about it, and if possible find an ADB keyboard and mouse to be able to restore this computer in all its glory

Whee! OMG, other peoples' computers, right? Sheesh!
After I met my future wife online (on Genie), I moved to be with her in California in the summer of '93.
Together we started a home desktop publishing and graphic design company with the Macintosh IIsi, Apple LaserWriter NTR and Apple OneScanner that she got with her education discount from the local junior college.
When the PowerPC Macs started comping out we upgraded to a Performa 637CD and a Performa 638CDV. We were not interested in new tech when our business was really booming. Besides, Apple was clearly confused about where they were going and we weren't ready to bet on their future at that time.
I was working on a Quadra 800 at the local junior college, which brought me here because the 8100 reminds me of that one.
    Delightful and fun video! Thanks!

We had the 8600 at work running the then new Quark 4.0 and Indesign 1.0 (Trash that Adobe almost immediately upgraded to 1.5). Our 8500 was the Laserwriter 8500. We were using a Itek platemaker and quickly learned that the 8500 had a flaw and didn't actually print at 100%, not great for printing camera ready copy. Oh 90's apple you crazy kids.

But tonight, just on a whim, I tried again, and finally the hard drive kicked in and it lives again. Now I need to figure out how to hook it to wifi. No hurry. I have a handful of new Macs to use. While I was elsewhere I used a G5 heavily, and the machine was a workhorse. I mean seven days a week, 10 hours a day spewing out text, graphics and emails.

"It doesn't do anything?" by good ol' Orson Welles, I have no idea why, just keeps getting funnier. When I went to college, a friend had one of these. I was very impressed by the case aesthetics (had no idea what kind of bad design it had practically), and he made music with an early version of Digital Performer on it. I bought a Power Mac 8100AV in spring 1995. I bought it with a 17' trinitron display and the ergonomic keyboard. It was my second Mac after my mother’s pizza box Mac (can’t remember the model, think it was pre-power pc). I discovered your videos last year and they have kept me amused ever since. Good to see a new one.

    • @65scribe
      @65scribe  3 роки тому +8

Yes, that was done amazingly fast after I released the video. Hats off to them! I did most of this video in the spring and summer last year before I got pulled away from it for 5 months. At the time, it was maddening to see my changes reverted after I did this whole piece for the video about me making the correction... and then I figured, that just makes the story better! I'm just sorry to any wayward souls who went searching for the 110AV during that time.

I love that you modded Marathon for a little comedy bit in this video. Funnily enough, I have a history with the 8100/80, the 6100/60 and Marathon, in that my charter school had these models of Mac and I got to spend a night playing it with fellow students on those machines. God, that was fun. First time I'd gotten to play a networked game, too. I remember I was so excited, I was shaking.

@@65scribe Many machines from this era need a recap (PCB clean and capacitor replacement) in order to work, it's possible that's all the board needs. Maybe send the board to someone who does that sort of thing? Great video anyway. I actually have an 8100/100AV, err I mean 8100/110, but I suspect it needs recapping - but I never knew of the Peltier used for heatsink transfer, absolutely nuts they shipped that in there.
