    Hey guys! I would really like to hear what you think about the Ed Tech portion! I am extremely excited to start using it this year and I would like to gauge your interest on how I should share my use in videos whether it be a full walkthrough or tips and tricks during Vlogs! Let me know. Thanks for watching!

    Maybe you could do a video about teacher fashion? You always have the cutest clothes on, and I struggle finding things that are modest and also cute.

      Yes please do! Every time i watch your videos i wonder where you get your clothes and what you wear to school. I also have a difficult time finding cute teacher clothes that i love. Id love to see a teacher fashion video from you!!

      I'm thinking about maybe doing a morning routine video in August. Let see how that ends up and we can go from there. While I love fashion, I don't see my self as a makeup/fashion individual... so I have shied away from doing those videos in the past.

    • @Booksandheather
      @Booksandheather 8 років тому +1

      I enjoy "fashion" videos from people who don't consider themselves fashion-y so much more. I like seeing what normal teachers that don't have an extra billion dollars to spend on clothes a month wear. I understand shying away from that category of video, but I know i'd be very excited to see one if you did decide to :)

    I love the idea of using bags with the labels so students can sort supplies. I write student name with lunch numbers on index cards. Then I have them write it in their homework notebook in case it gets lost.

      Love that idea! I did a similar idea with clothes pins on their shirts (favorite) and one year with popsicle sticks!

    Please do a video about planning. What I mean by this is for first year teachers. That's something that we never really went over in class. For example... when you introduce a new subject, how long do you teach it? 2 days, 3 days, 2 weeks? That's what I am stressing over the most. haha.

    • @BridgingLiteracy

    • @BridgingLiteracy

      I answered this question a bit with another viewer and here is what I wrote:
      I completely understand how you feel. I have felt this same way brainstorming ideas and where I need to start for the beginning of the year. Here is what I suggest. Begin by reading and having students select books. This is similar to the daily 5 but in 2nd grade you are going to have a wide range of kids. You will have some who are reading picture books and some that are beginning to read small chapter books. Build anchor charts, model how to read independently, with a partner etc. This is important! If they don't get this foundation down first you will struggle all year. If you haven't read Debbie Miller's book Reading with Meaning check it out. She gives you a flow of her progression throughout the year and it's very good. Mine was similar but that was because how my county had us teaching certain standards. In September she has you focus on routines and really emphasizing read aloud during this time. Show students what to do when they get to words they don't know, making connections, and inferring. I really hope this helps you get a starting point. I could talk about this forever! Best of luck and check out her book and look up Daily 5 anchor charts for setting up procedures and using reading strategies.
      As far as how long do you teach topics it really depends. Think with the end in mind. What do you want your class to know. Write that down first. Then think about how you are going to break that down into smaller increments to reach the end goal (what you want them to learn) Some catch on quick others it takes them longer this is where you will need to 'listen' to your class and figure out how long it takes them. I really hope this helps!

  • @MakeItWithMich
    @MakeItWithMich 8 років тому

    I'm new to your channel and I love your content! I can't believe how different teaching is in Canada as opposed to you guys in the states. Huge one is all the rules we have against parent involvement! We're not ALLOWED to ask for supplies, can't serve food, can't hang things the doors or from the ceilings, can't use email for communication, can't take pictures or videos of children in the classroom. It's so CRAZY! It feels like jail sometimes! You have such great ideas and I can't wait to implement your ideas in my class this year. Coming back to grade 2 after a year off on mat leave! Thanks for sharing!

    • @BridgingLiteracy
      @BridgingLiteracy  8 років тому

      Thank you so much for watching! I'm very curious about the parent involvement portion of your comment...please explain!

    • @MakeItWithMich
      @MakeItWithMich 8 років тому

      Sure! So we have scheduled interviews like you do. And we totally are encouraged to contact parents as much as possible. The FORMAT of how it's done is different. We are not allowed to email, can obviously only call from a school phone, need to keep records of everything like you. Maybe it's just the school I'm in, but we usually don't "enjoy" contacting parents because there's usually a power struggle and dispute over something that was said or done. It seems that most parents these days are all about defending their child no matter what and don't make them accountable for things. On the topic of parents coming into the classroom, oh my goodness, what a procedure. They need a criminal reference check that's valid every year. They need to sign papers. No pictures can be taken while in the classroom. It's seriously crazy! We of course love to communicate with parents about the good things their kids are doing and I always keep parents informed via a monthly classroom newsletter but it always seems that the parents are either not interested in their child's learning, not happy with what's going on, or just complaining about something general. I'm convinced it's fly's just be my school! At least I hope it is! Thanks for responding! I'm actually SERIOUSLY considering starting a Canadian teaching UA-cam channel to replace my current one. ;)

    Love the tips, tfs. I'll be lucky if I get my student list 2 days before school starts and then it won't be finalized for a week due to many families registering late (we start on Aug., 10 and some families don't show up until after Labor Day). One thing I like to add to your list (maybe your school provides one, mine doesn't) is a bus # list. I never know what bus my students are suppose to get on so I'm always running around to figure out where my students go.

I started watching your videos at the end of June when school finished and even though I was so exhausted I began to get excited about starting school in September. Does the planbook.com website let you print out the lesson plans or no? I would feel that writing it on there and then writing it in your (unbelievably amazing) plan book is repetitive! not sure but will try both I guess. thanks for all your dedication to reach teachers to give advice ! you're great!

      To that point, yes it would be repetitive if you were to duplicate the information. However, I tend to use Planbook as a macro view of my lesson plans and my personal planner as my micro view with daily notes and my checklists. Hope that helps. I will try and show how I use both throughout the upcoming year.

    You are awesome! This year I also made my kids birthday treat bags before school! In 2nd grade I have two groups, my homeroom and another group for math! I also spent time purchasing 2 packs of Ziploc small containers. These cost me about $5.00. In each small tub I placed 2 die and 4 counting bears for games. The kids will take out the bears and leave either 1 or both dice in the small container and shake it before laying it on the table with the blue side up! They can see the dice and I hear no more flying across the room! By the way, Target has so many great $1 deals, I placed a Dr Suess Pencil, eraser and Dr Seuss bookmark in each. I purchased the chalkboard and polka dots kit from Schoolgirlstyle and printed generic tags with Happy Birthday! Love, Mrs. W and decorated the treat bags with purple and silver ribbon!
