If you are new to our videos, YES, this one might strike you as a bit silly; however, if you have any interest in firearms, firearms history, and firearms safety, check out some of our other videos; you might learn something more useful than how to load an M1 Garand. Welcome aboard! :-) Granted, as has been pointed out, if you get your thumb out of there quickly, you can load successfully without losing your thumb. The main reason this technique I'm showing is taught (And I use it always) is that it saves your thumb whenever you are messing with your M1 Garand, whether you are not getting the bolt back all the way, unloading the rifle, just checking the action, loading a partially loaded clip, etc. Probably most commonly, one gets his or her thumb caught when just working the bolt on an empty chamber, due to not getting the bolt back into the lock position. The Garand is wonderful, but the action and loading system is a bit odd, which results in a better chance of getting "Garand Thumb" in some way when trying to get the gun locked back, loaded, or whatever. I never pull the bolt back unless I have my hand against that operating rod; others can proceed however they prefer. :-) Don't forget to visit the Hickok45 store: www.hickok45.com/store/

@@mattm3023 HK G3/91/CETME/ PTR-91 can really handle dirt. The roller lock system is a dirty one to begin with but at the same time, doesn't care about how hot ammo is, how clean, dirty, steel, brass- cases, et cetera. So long as the rollers are in round, bolt gap is good and cursory cleaned, it will always run. Delayed blowback is simple, bulky, but it works.
Look up Shifty Powers (real life Brother) and his comment on the Garand: (paraphrasing) "I loved the M1. You could throw it into a mud puddle, drag it out and it'd shoot." He should know - he was there, not in his Granny's basement munching a hot pocket and being a keyboard warrior internet badass.
My Dad saw guys do that in Germany in 1952.Also, his weapons platoon sergeant demonstrated that you could indeed pull the bolt back too far on an M1919 .30 cal machine gun & pull the barrel back into the water jacket where it doesn't belong.
When I was in JROTC we had decommissioned M1 Garands with a lead stop blocking the barrel. I knew so many people get Garand Thumb because they weren't paying attention when doing drill and ceremony commands, one of which was rifle inspections. Learning how to pull the bolt back and release it without getting your thumb stuck was nerve wracking at first, but it becomes second nature and a skill you never forget.

@@imrelentless9577 It's the forceful ejection of the clip. Normally the clip is inside of the magazine, but for the m1 garand the magazine is built into the gun itself, so the clip is inserted separately and thus must be removed from the gun before the next clip of ammunition can be loaded. Can you imagine trying to dig the clip out of the gun every time you run out of ammunition? That's why it forcefully ejects. Faster reloading, no jamming, and less room for error. Shame that such a loud ejection is just free advertisement to your enemy that you need to reload.
I actually convinced my Drill Instructors at Parris Island to let me fire my Garand left handed. I loaded the clip with four fingers on the clip and my thumb holding the bolt back. Never caught my fingers and my thumb is still strong - 64 years later.
While I've never held a real Garand, not mentioning shooting one, I actually had a dream, in which I did. And guess what, my dream-self actually did remember, to hold the charging handle secure, while loading the clip. Kinda funny, isn't it?
Thank you for this great video , Mr. Hickok and Son. I saw movies and some old war films of that odd , hand to the side , loading technique and never knew why. And I always wondered , I know that bolt is sprung hard as heck , how do you load a clip in the gun and not slam your thumb in it. Keep the side of your hand on that bolt lever ,as you load it or smash a part of your hand...understood. The clip flip at the last round is a one of a kind experience. Fantastic American firearm. 4 years later , still a great video.
KGames 22 incorrect, WWII started in 1939 and ended in 1945. The M1 garand was put into the war in 1939 (when the war started, it became the main rifle of the us army in 1936). How many years is the difference between 1939 and 2020? 81! Get your facts straight before trying to be a smart ass.
Most people got Garand thumv from.messing with empty gun or it being incredibly worn and clean and with worn out clips(modern ww2 examples after heavy use) If it isnt well worn and on top of that is dirty then its incredibly unlikely to close on ones thumb. It will almost always require a little nudge to slide forward just like later in the video
Oh yeah, I'm old enough to have used the M1 while in ROTC. By the time i went into the service we were using M16's. Your video has brought back some vivid memories of that old Garand. It was fun to shoot and we learned to use the same technique as you demonstrated. Thanks Hickok.
Alek Kozlov it woulda never been heard in an actual battle tho i coukdnt really hear it that well over the percussion of that last round.....so myth busted....
That rifle looks like an absolute blast to shoot. Don't have one myself sadly but my grandfather did own one as well as a few other historic war rifles
When I took the hunter safety course, a man came in and he was missing his first 3 fingers. He told a story of when he was shooting a mussel loader, long story short he pulled the trigger and nothing happened. He then decided to stick his fingers down the barrel of the gun. To his surprise, the gun then shot blowing off his first three fingers. The End.

Yes it is indeed

It's funny cuz it's pretty hard to hear when you're firing 30-06 IRL

“Garand can handle a little dirt”. *sad ar noises*
Youre kidding. Go watch InrangeTV mud tests of both weapons and get back to me
@@mattm3023 HK G3/91/CETME/ PTR-91 can really handle dirt.
*forward assist noises.*
Why is this comment wholesome?
It's amazing how every action of the M1 Garand sounds so nice.
I think i will never have a M1 Garand, but i already know that this man already saved my thumbs. thank you for your service sir
Thank you! The next rifle I have my eyes on is a M1 Garand and
I am positive that I would of got Gerand thumb if not for watching this.

0:05 I wonder how many people did that in WW2
Alot my man. alot... My grandpa did it in vietnam
tfw your behind enemy lines and your homie hurts his thumb....
My Dad saw guys do that in Germany in 1952.Also, his weapons platoon sergeant demonstrated that you could indeed pull the bolt back too far on an M1919 .30 cal machine gun & pull the barrel back into the water jacket where it doesn't belong.
My great uncle told us that they used to call it the M1 Thumb cus of all the idiots that broke their thumb reloading it.
doughesson your dad? 1952??
How old are you?
When I was in JROTC we had decommissioned M1 Garands with a lead stop blocking the barrel. I knew so many people get Garand Thumb because they weren't paying attention when doing drill and ceremony commands, one of which was rifle inspections. Learning how to pull the bolt back and release it without getting your thumb stuck was nerve wracking at first, but it becomes second nature and a skill you never forget.
When he said “excuse me” i had to look at my screen because i was making a sandwich lmao

Why would you put ice on a sandwich in the first place

That ping wasn’t as glorious as expected, BUT doesn’t sound like anyone else expected it either.
Question what causes the ping? When the clip falls on the ground? Or what?
@@imrelentless9577 It's the forceful ejection of the clip. Normally the clip is inside of the magazine, but for the m1 garand the magazine is built into the gun itself, so the clip is inserted separately and thus must be removed from the gun before the next clip of ammunition can be loaded. Can you imagine trying to dig the clip out of the gun every time you run out of ammunition? That's why it forcefully ejects. Faster reloading, no jamming, and less room for error.
Shame that such a loud ejection is just free advertisement to your enemy that you need to reload.
@@thetaintedbear4557 never thought about it like that but yes I see what you mean. They can hear you reloading lol but man that sound is crisp 🔥😮💨
its random and works best on solid ground
I'd think it was less glorious because of the loud BANG's before the comparably soft ping noise

As a79 year old Marine I can tell you every Marine I knew had the Garand Thumb, including me, at least once. Usually once was enough. Hurt like hell.

Kinda funny, isn't it?
jacplac97 good job you passed the test
you don't HAVE to hold it but it is the safest way
And then everyone clapped

M1 Garand: *pings*
*This is the kind of porn I need*
u r absolutely right m8
I love when he says "Get ready for the ping!"
