I think Seamus' dislike of Cedric is more along the lines of teenage boys hating the pretty boys that you see in boybands for instance. A lot of the girls at Hogwarts find Cedric tall and handsome and giggle at the sight of him. It's quite common for guys like that to be despised by other teenage boys. I've always understood that to be a key annoyance of Seamus, not just the one game lost, especially since he keeps emphasizing his good looks and pretty face.

Dumbledore made the Age Line to prevent underage students to put their names into the goblet. The goblet itself would pick 3 most fit students, one for each school if no one tampered with it. What Dumbledore did is he made a line that students under 17 couldn't cross - I'm pretty sure nothing would happen to them, they just couldn't cross it. He also made sure the age line detects any sort of cheating - enchantment, potion etc. used by students to age themselves - and backfires at them, multiplying the effects as a kind of prank and also a warning to prevent others from trying to bypass the line.

My guesses as to partly why Harry isn't fanboying over Krum is that he himself knows what it's like to have people oggling and giving him attention simply for his fame and he's just over the whole culture of it. At the end of the day he Harry is just a person and he probably understands that about Krum, regardless of his admiration of Krum's quidditch skills.

I think Dumbledore would be, well, not exactly angry but severely disappointed and strict if Harry had outsmarted him and put his name in the Goblet of Fire (so, if Harry had admitted the guilt or denied it but was found to be lying through Legilimency), much like how he was disappointed with Harry after he flew a car to Hogwarts. He only overlooked most of Harry's rulebreaking because he tends to do it for good reasons, and putting his name in the Goblet of Fire is most certainly not a good reason.

3:37:27 that’s not quite true, Harry wasn’t affected by the Veela in the forest when Ron exclaimed that he invented a broom that could reach Jupiter. The only time so far that Harry was affected was during the quidditch World Cup when there was a large number of them dancing.

Harry is raised among Muggles. He's not as much of a fan of Krum as Ron as he heard of him probably once and saw him play one match. He would be more of a person that acknowledges that someone is famous. Also, Harry is not particularly fond of fame due to his own fame, history with Lockhart being a fraud, having conversations with Dumbledore and Fudge. He's not intimidated or perplexed by celebrities but rather people that act like celebrities.

It makes sense why book seamus is much more negative towards cedric then movie seamus. Book seamus actually has a personality and flaws unlike his movie counterpart whos only personality trait is that he blows up stuff. There is a big rivality between the houses and these are all kids. So yes for seamus and other gryffindors its a big deal that cedric beat them in quidditch. And because these are "stupid" teenagers plus the house rivality they will talk negatively about the members of others houses they dont like. And for that they use insults of the appearance or intelligence of these they dont like, because thats what kids do. I wont spoil anything, so lets just say if you are annoyed about seamus talking bad about cedric, you should be mad about how the hufflepuffs will treat harry in the future chapters.

The difference between an acronym and an initialism: acronyms are said as one word, like NASA and CLI...IS, and initialisms pronounce each letter, like BBC.
So Ron pronounces SPEW as an acronym, but Hermione wants it to be an initialism.

I think the Dumbledore asked calmly scene should have played out in the movie like: Everyone comes in yelling. Maxime and Karkarov arguing with Minerva and Moody. Then in the background you just hear “Harry…” at a normal volume and the arguing stops abruptly. Similar to the scene at the council of Elrond in Fellowship of the Ring when Frodo says he’ll take the ring.
The movies never got Dumbledore quite right. You get whiffs of it in the books that Dumbledore can go full scary at times, and everyone getting quiet when he talks would fit with that. He never shows his true emotions or anger in front of students and is polite, but adult wizards would know Dumbledore is THAT GUY. Only one the most evil wizard of all time feared.

I think its a little hypocritical of hermione to be annoyed at ron over his excitement of krum, while SHE was the biggest lockhart fan running around and completly incapable to see that he was a fraud while harry and ron could see that from the beginning! I mean, ron is a krum fan because of his awesome quidditch skills and because of his love for the game. Hermione was a lockhart fan because he was handsome. She has absolutely no right to give ron criticism for being excited. She was way worse for the wrong reasons!

I don’t think Seamus dislikes Cedric just because of one game. I think it’s a combination of the game, the house rivalry and being a bit jealous that Cedric is more popular and handsome. They probably haven’t interacted positively so all they know of him are things to pettily dislike him for.

1:45:55 Snape is there because... he's basically Dumbledore's right-hand man in a lot of ways. He is a gifted Legilimens, and can help Dumbledore sus out any deceit and dishonestly in the room. Dumbledore knows he can trust Snape completely, and confides in Snape in ways he doesn't with anyone else. Basically, they both run Hogwarts along with McGonagall.

On the twins putting their name in: Veggie, trying to make sense of the movies is a useless attempt and will take a LONG time on these videos. :)
From now on, the movies don't even try to explain the rules or follow the book rules. It's just random.
Also, I disagree that movie Seamus is better than book Seamus. The reason why he's cheering in the movie is because he (just like all other supporting characters) is just a template, with no personality whatsoever. You might not like Seamus' toxic rivalry, but it is one of his personality traits. It's like saying movie Hermione is better than book Hermione, because she is much smarter and has fewer flaws.

  • @sunnysunsins_4920
    @sunnysunsins_4920 26 днів тому +4

As some people in the comments said, from this book on, it's better to not try to make movies make sense with what is explained in books. Movies LARGELY ignore established worldbuilding and even it's own plotpoints, all for the sake of the "omg epic movie, buy tickets". And that's not even starting on the characters.... don't let me go on a rant of how they butchered poor Fleir.. or any female character for that matter (cough, Ginny). ...and then i went on the rant:
It's like the adaptation writers had 2 modes: "oh, people like this girl, let's take away all her flaws that make her an actual person and not a mary sue" (Hermione) or "meh, some love interest, who cares" (everyone else)
At least Luna got spared that treatment, but i'm crediting that entirely to her actress, who was a book reader from the start

I really don't think the one quidditch game has as much to do with characters' opinions on Cedric as you seem to think. Before that game, during training, Wood brought up Cedric, the new Hufflepuff captain, and the girls on the team get all giggly and interested, and one of them asks whether that is that tall handsome guy, and I think either Fred or George (or both?) makes some negative remark about him. That was all before the Hufflepuff Griffindor game that you keep referencing. Cedric is popular, both generally and also particularly with the ladies, and other teenage boys can get jealous in that situation. That doesn't make it right, but I never really got the impression that the books actually expect the reader to dislike him. He is portraited as very fair and humble, willing to repeat the game and declare his victory void, only wanting to win fair and square, a really all around good guy, model student and whatever else, but so much of a perfect guy, that a lot of the other guys, particularly ones that are already put into competition with him by the house system and some of them through quidditch, can't stand him, cause he's too much of a squeaky clean perfect guy that they couldn't keep up with if they tried. And that lots of girls have a crush on or at least generally find him very good looking.

1:46:40 Snape has sworn to protect Harry (in his own crappy way), and Harry once again finds himself in a dangerous situation. It makes sense that he at least wants to know what's going on. And it also makes sense that he's annoyed that Harry is once again making it so hard for him to keep him out of harm's way.
But how savage is Book Snape to throw Harry under the bus like that, in front of three headmasters and two Ministry officials? 😂
Seriously, I love Alan Rickman's version of Snape, and he will forever live on in our hearts, always, but we need a faithful adaptation of Book Snape for the upcoming HBO/Max series! 😅

The way I read it, was the Goblet was always the way the contestants were chosen, with the age-line being the only thing that was new. As to other champions being selected for Beauxbatons and Drumstrang, it could've been written that way, but the plot needs to happen. Having six champions instead might have been too complex to supply the extra dragons, etc. However, out of universe it just adds two more wizards to slow the story, and risk making the challenges sound more repetitive.

I view the SPEW debacle the same as greyhound/horse racing. There are people who believe its abusive and people who believe its the animals nature to run, then of course you also have the humans who DO abuse the animals for their own gain.
Basically if the creature is happy doing its thing we should let it keep going but there will always be humans who take advantage of the situation, so regulations are needed.

  • @FatimaMTT

Someone on twitter suggested Liam Neeson as Dumbledore and I think he would be perfect. He’s a good age where it’s not a stretch to think he will live until after the series is done, and with makeup he can appear a lot older. And more importantly, we know that he can be incredibly intimidating and badass and an absolute legend in general, but also very warm and fatherly (see his relationship with his son and daughter in Love Actually and Taken respectively). In Taken he does such a great job of being so calm and collected even in the most tense scenes, and I think he would be great at giving us that perfect combination of calm and witty but also incredibly skilled and intimidating.
As for the gryffindor’s hate on Cedric and Hufflepuff I think it comes down to immaturity. Puberty and adolecense are difficult times and it’s very common at that age to project our negative feelings onto other people (especially people who we consider enemies one way or another). Plus, that stage in life can also bring out our competitive side and it’s often easy to just put blame on someone else.
I’m completely with Hermione about the whole SPEW thing. I think deep down quite a few wizards do realize how wrong it is that house elves are essentially slaves and that so many of them are treated horribly, but everyone is so comfortable with the way things work so they turn a blind eye to it and lie to themselves. They’ve convinced themselves that the house elves like being enslaved because accepting the truth would be very uncomfortable and it would take a lot of work to change things (both inner work and actual legal reforms). And the house elves have been manipulated to be incredibly submissive it’s just so messed up all around.
Also I was the one who sent you the Lego parody of the “Dumbledore said calmly” moment. Nice to hear you mention it hehe

Durmstrang is supposed to be somewhere in North-Eastern Europe. There're a lot of languages there (Russian, Bulgarian, German, Swedish, etc). To hold classes in English is fairest to everyone there. They all need to know English, as the world's lingua franca, and none of the students are favoured over one another.

  • @annakilifa331
    @annakilifa331 14 днів тому

I agree that there should have been at least some communication about what happens when an older student puts in the name of a younger one. I had the theory that the goblet doesn't actually decide by names and doesn't have the ability to link a name to the person whose name it is, but that it links it to whoever puts it in the goblet. The way the students got instructed on it, it seemed to be somewhat important that a student would prrsonally put in their name, but it wasn't explicitly said that they really, really had to. But it was said that anyone who was considering it should really think about it because once you put your nane in, you can't back out again. It's a binding contract and a contract usually requires you to personally sign it (with your own name). So I thought that if you sign wirh someone elses name, you would still be the one entering the contract, because it's magical, and you would still be the one who would be evaluated as to hiw good of a champion you would make. Of course it doesn't work that way, otherwise Harry couldn't have been entered by someone else, but it was a theory I came up with as a child. I guess you could try to argue that, while the person putting in the name is the one being evaluated as champion, the person whose name it is would be the one magically bound to it, but that still doesn't really make sense. I don't see why that would be how it works. Child me thought that that would be a good reason for Dumbledore to ask if Harry got an older student to do it, so that if they knew who did it, they could declare that person champion instead, a goblet approved worthy old enough person who put a paper with someone elses name inside but had thereby still agreed to be a potential champion because they would have willingly put a name in the goblet.
But as I said, it doesn't really make sense and I wozld have loved an explanation of what happens if anyone puts in anyone elses name. If a 17 year old didn't want to be seen putting their name in like Harry wouldn't have wanted to, they could, instead of doimg it at night, have had someone else put in their name. Gave their friend put 8n both of their names together or someone who doesn't want to compete but doesn't care about being perceived as trying and failing to become champion do it for them. That way it wouldn't even have had to be an underage student or anyone breaking any rules at all. What would have happened?

One plot point I always find difficult to go along with is why they just let Harry compete despite the obvious manipulation that must've happened to get him elected. It makes much more sense in the book than in the movie, though. It's not Dumbledore who ultimately makes the call, but Crouch and Bagman. One is a bureaucrat that clings to the written rules irrespective of their logic, the other is over the moon to have this sensational fourth champion in the game, and especially to have the famous Harry Potter compete, so that the one triwizard tournament he organized is guaranteed to go down in history. With their combined forces, they make this key plot point somewhat plausible. It's a shame one of them was so underdeveloped in the movie, and the other completely absent.

Seamus and in fact everyone hating on each other is a completely normal state od being for teenagers. Being superficial and jealous (which is what Seamus is) is also perfectly normal. Not everyone is going to be friends with everyone and there is no reason to either. It has very little to do with quidditch.
When it comes to the question of House Elves you have to understand what they actually are. They aren't a species magically forces to do the bidding of wizards. They aren't slaves taken from their homelands and magically forces to do what a wizard wants or risk death. Their magic is mostly distinct from human magic and It is in their nature is to serve wizards.
Crouch forcing Winky to sit at a quidditch game and Malfoy treating Dobby like a slave and physically abusing him is so far apart that i don't know how you managed to put them next to each other. And besides, you don't know why Winky was there in the first place.
I agree, not one family should abuse the power they have over a House Elf, but outside of that there is very little that can be done.
Snape is there in that scene because he is the right hand man of Dumbledore. He also knows Karkaroff as they were both deatheaters.
Why they can't add two more champions? Logistics around the tasks, magic, pick whatever you want, it doesn't matter really.

Remember Hufflepuff only won because of the dementors’ interference, or maybe they would have won anyway but we didn’t have a chance to find out what the outcome of a fair game would have been.
I’ve heard you say you’re a fan of wrestling, imagine that your favorite wrestler lost an important match because terrorists from ISIS came in and knocked him unconscious and they didn’t redo the match, wouldn’t you think that’s incredibly unfair, even if the winner was gracious enough to propose a rematch? I think you would remember that happening with bitterness for years to come. By the way, I picked terrorists because I was trying to find something in the real world as horrible as dementors.

The Man Who Laughs is a silent movie, and being from 1928 it is in public domain now so it is now very easy to find. Although the inspiration for the Joker is purely from the appearance of the character, Gwynplaine. Very different story, though. Gwynplaine's actually outright the good guy despite his appearance

Well said at the start Veg, about different versions of the same story differing from each other in the different media, and thats fine. People get their knickers in a twist about Dumbledore's line for example portrayed by Gambon compared to the book. I've never had an issue with this, as an actors job is to interpret his character, not be an automoton rote-saying the lines. My favourite franchise is Star Wars, and in that we have different versions of Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi throughout the films, live series, and the animations, and I have no problem jumping between all of them portraying these characters slightly differently, as generally I consider them as showing different traits of said characters.
There is a lot of differences between this book and the film however, and this is my favourite book, and the film is my second least fave behind Half-Blood Prince, but I still enjoy watching them whenever they are on.
Hermione is a Brexiteer, gotcha! :P
Funny you bringing up Dennis The Menace from The Beano Veggie. A friend of mine swears his father created Gnasher for Dennis. He worked for DC Thomson as an illustrator for The Beano, and my friend is certain he first created Gnasher but was never credited for it. Those things happen, we've seen the over the years with people who worked developing Superman and Batman, not get credited for their creation.
Getting yourself worked up over nothing again Veg about the boys talking about the Hogwarts entries. Its just about rivalry, and they are kids. It isn't meant to offend anyone. You read too much into it here.

I like the angry Dumbledore in the film. It comes across to me as genuine worry. That despite his plans and hopes that Harry circumvented the protections. As if Harry could've used some muggle knowledge to bypass the wizarding protections. It shows Dumbledore as fallible rather than the mastermind that some see him as being. I suspect it's like Lupin, who considered it poor reward to his parents who gave their lives to keep him safe.
I have a head canon, where the names can be cast into the goblet from outside the circle. Either balled up to fly further, or made into paper planes for the same effect. Just keep trying until one goes in. I'm sure others can come up with better ways to defeat the protective circle.

Fresh made potato chips, or crisps as you call them are amazing when freshly made and still warm. There's a fast food place in the southern part of the US called Zaxby's where that at least used to be a menu option and they'd make them fresh for you. Highly recommend, not 100% sure it's vegan though in theory it could be done vegan. It's possible the house elves are making them down in the kitchens (edit: Zaxby's doesn't carry them anymore :( but there are vegan recipes online to recreate them if you google zaxbys chips)

What I meant was, the title didn't really mean anything to the story the movie told. I hope that makes sense! Other favs of mine are Breakthrough, Show Must Go On and Friends Will Be Friends! :D

@@VeggieGamer Hi Veggie, I thought you must have heard it before, I am glad you cleared it up, the title for the film was I think because it was such an iconic song for an iconic band, yes I love someone to love, invisible man, we are the champions, we will rock you, radio ga ga, another one bites the dust to name a few. I also love your buffy reactions, I first came to your Channel with the Harry Potter reactions, then I decided to watch The Lord of the Rings reactions as I knew you would respect my favourite book and the 1st book I bought which was the biggest book and the most expensive book I had ever bought, I was a school girl when I purchased that and the Hobbit together. And I have seen all your reactions to the various videos on the subject of TLOR. I also love your star kids reactions, I especially like the way you match up the actors with the Harry Potter character's. Of course there are some things that I am not interested in but I always eagerly await for your next drop of something that I will love. So thanks again for your continued hard work.

Yes, I, too, usually listen to these videos while cleaning my apartment and doing the dishes. And sometimes while eating. Or when doing anything else that doesn't require a lot of brain power and attention, but needs doing and is somewhat boring to do on its own. I often generally listen to some kind of long form videos during that and this series has supplied quite a few of them. :)

In the book when Fred and George get their beards and Dumbledore tells them to go to the hospital wing, he mentions that there are already several (I think two) other students with beards there to get them removed. One of them is female, or at least refered to as "Miss [Lastname]". So that is a reason to believe that Dumbledore's age line just gives everyone beards and that it isn't just the aging potion aging them or the age line making the aging potion effects more extreme. I mean, cis women can also get facial hair, especially after menopause, so old age can lead to a regular cis woman growing a noticable amount of facial hair, but I think it is rare for that to end up being a full on beard. Maybe a bit of a mustache and some chin hairs, but more than that would be rather unusual, I think. Of course pcos can make it mire likely and all that, but statistically it still seems like a woman randomly growing a full beard when aging would be not very likely. Not impossible, but not very common, I guess.

    Hey Veggy,
First if all, I had a great time with this video as always. Keep up the good work, I highly enjoy it :)
If you are looking for another potential long term Harry-Potter-related project or just some private entertainment, you can watch or even react to "5 Minuten Harry Podcast" by Coldmirror. She is a pretty famous UA-camr here in Germany and in this podcast, per episode she takes 5 minutes of "Harry Potter and the philosopher's stone" and analyzes them, giving background information, trivial facts about the movie and the lore and sometimes even just random facts. It's highly entertaining and informative in my opinion. The first 3 or 4 episodes are more about the "fun" aspect, but after that, they are getting pretty interesting. Yes, the podcast is in german, but it has english subtitles who are actually pretty accurate.
But, of course, I can understand if that's not your kind of thing, nevertheless I wanted to recommend the podcast to you. Maybe you'll have a look at it. Have a nice one :)

I can't recall the quality of 'Love Thy Neighbour'. However, it was intriguing way of Britain processing the changes that were going on at the time. Naturally, it will have dated badly. I'll take that as a sign that we've made progress as a society. I believe there was an attempt to balance the bigotry, with their being an attempt to for each to have a dig at the other, exposing the ignorance and stupidity of some of the beliefs that people had before integration...
I'd love to see something similar nowadays, to encourage debate on current social stresses that are being felt.

My issue with SPEW is not that the conditions should not be improved, it is that house elf’s “plight” would not need to be improved. The Lucious/Dobby relationship is not the norm (indeed I might even posit that any other elf than Dobby would not receive the same treatment by Lucious). I cannot address your opinion on Winky save to say I disagree. To bog down a piece of legislature with too many different points is to have it stall on the floor, and the improving conditions of house elves clause would be the thing that endangers the rest of it. To state that the main point of SPEW is to stop the mistreatment of house elves is to instantly insult those families and persons who have beloved house elves as parts of their families, and would alienate many of the wizarding body that would have the ability to pass the laws to put SPEW policies into effect.

Yes, simply allowing another student from Durmstrang and another one from Beaubatons, so that there are two from each school, would be perfectly fair and logical. But if there's one thing we can be sure of about wizards, it's that they are almost NEVER fair and logical. I was thinking of listing all the examples here, but I don't have the time. If you want, go ahead and reply to this post with your favorite failure of justice or reason perpetrated by wizards.
