For handheld lowlight photography is a great lens. The factors that help in handheld low light photography are three. 1. Short focal length permits faster shutter speeds and that avoids blurry images. 2. Big aperture permits lower ISO and that means less noisy photos. 3. Lens Stabilisation is important. It permits 4 stops lower ISO or shutter speed. This lens combines three of them nicely. Another one good lens for lowlight handheld photography and equally priced is the Canon 35mm f/2 IS with stabilization too.
I can understand all the negative comments here, particularly those related to the price, but let me present an alternative perspective. I travel a lot, sometimes with a single bag and my go-to, "do it all" lens for my 6D is the 40mm pancake. It turns that full frame camera into a wonderfully portable option. That said, I shoot architectural interiors fairly often and I can't always bring my 17mm TSE, which is magic for architectural interiors. The 24mm 2.8 IS serves as backup when I have no tripod and am not carrying my 17mm TSE, which is a large, heavy lens. I use it for architectural, some street shooting in the city, and landscapes primarily. The IS is great at night in the city. It is SMALL, light, VERY sharp (see DXO and other reviews), fairly low distortion, and the IS gives me extra stops in indoor lighting when I have no tripod. For me, it's basically perfect, though I would prefer it in 20mm w/ F2 even if it were slightly larger. However, I almost never shoot it at 2.8 anyway. Some of the alternatives that have been mentioned here in the comments (such as Sigma Art or Samyang manual focus) are MUCH bigger and heavier...and that makes it really an unfair comparison. For example, the Tamron 24-70 is MUCH larger and heavier and this is apples to oranges. For me, it's a great travel lens...not perfect, but what lens performs in a superior way or for a lower price at this size and focal length (or wider) on Canon full frame? This gives me (along with the 40mm STM) a great and highly portable two-prime solution for travel.
Also, now that the price on this lens has fallen you can pick it up used for a bit over $400 in great shape, which is about what I paid.Obviously, if you are buying this for crop, the 24mm 2.8 STM makes more sense for most users considering cost. I have the 40mm STM version and it is my every day lens.
I got this lens used for about $160 and it is in excellent condition. Looks like it was hardly used. I use it on my Sony a7rii and it handles the 42mp sensor well. In fact I have several older Canon lenses for my Sony and they are all extremely sharp. This lens, the 40mm 2.8, the 85mm 1.8 and the 135mm 2.8 SF lens. I was quite surprised at this last lens. When you take if off of Soft Focus, it handles almost as good as the 135mm L lens I used to have, but at a much smaller size and price. Plus it is razor sharp. And then for a zoom I have the 24-105 L lens. This has worked as well for my volunteer work now that I'm retired as a pastor and hospice chaplain. Due to budget constraints, I use the old 70-210 lens which actually provides excellent photos.
One of the my favorite lenses. It has great performance and lightness. I also have 24mm f1.4LII, but I still miss this light, hidden gem. Nowadays, its price is very reasonable, I think.
After watching this review and the EF 28mm f1.8's, I can't help thinking if you ever plan on going back to evaluate vintage lenses and, in this particular make and range. I'm talking about the ancient EF 24mm 2.8 and EF 28mm f2.8 lenses. Talk about vintage lenses!
Hi Chris, Firstly, thanks for your fantastic reviews. In your review of the Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM, you specifically mention the coma. I'm wondering if you found the 24mm and 28mm lenses suffering from a similar problem?
I am getting a copy of pre owned lens may be 4 year old. At 12000 indian rupees/ 150 US Dollar. Should i go for it? Lens is perfect condition but a little bit scratches. Image quality is sharp and clean.
This is the pro quality lens for full-frame that's much better than my EF 16-35 2.8 LII For me, I think this lens price is very good indeed for its performance.
Check the second hand market for these. Due to their low popularity they tend to go a lot cheaper - I picked up the 28mm model for $400AU used. The reason I sought this out was for a small, light weight hardy indoor party/event lens to pair with flash in the other hand. So far I'm very happy with it.
Hello , i am getting in 150 USD. Will it be good? I don't know the values of these. I just converted to indian 12000 rupees to USD. lens looks 4-5 year used but in good condition. Little scratch but no visible effects on images.
Bit late to the party, but I liked your review. Is the distortion a dealbreaker? I'm looking for a light wide angle prime for FF and this might be a good one for me. I'd welcome your views on if I should leave it due to the distortion though.
I had the Non IS version of this and recently sold this for £150 so if you do not require IS then this is a very good choice at way under half the price of the IS.
Great review, Chris. I've owned this lens for the better part of two years now, and I enjoy it very much for the performance it packs in such a small package. It's seen plenty of action varying from weddings to landscapes, street photography, and such. That being said, I definitely would have felt a little bummed out if the 24mm pancake that came out recently was an EF mount lens, because it would have made the 24mm 2.8 IS lens pointless. The price difference between the two 24mm lenses would have been enough for me to sell the 24mm IS if the pancake version fit full frame cameras.
I bought mine for $300 used, and use it on the GH5 for video with a viltrox focal reducer and it is quite nice. Plus. I get an extra stop of light, which is great.
Hi Chris, I'm looking to invest in a lens for best image quality I can afford. I'm stuck between this, the 35mm f2 IS, Sigma 30mm 1.4 and the 18-35mm 1.8. I'm a bit put off by the weight and size of the latter but it is in the top end of my budget although I prefer primes and tend to shoot in low light indoors a lot. What do you recommend out of the the three on apsc? Thanks a lot your vids are great!
Hi Chris, all right? I like to know about the old one 24mm f/2.8. What you think about it, i buy one , the old one to my 6D. thanks for sharing your knowledge!!!
Hey Christopher, it's always a pleasure to watch your reviews. I am looking for a wide lens with at least f2.0 or T2.0 for street photography for my Canon 70D. I love Samyang lenses but the 24mm f1.4 or T1.5 Cine is too big for street photography. What other lenses would you recommend that range from 20mm to 28mm that includes AF? I don't mind the IS.
How much different is this lens compared to the 24mm f/2.8 STM Pancake Lens that sells for around 150.00? I own a 40mm Pancake Lens and thus far the wide angle is superb on a 70D.
It's not the same. This has IS and works on FF. This is worth at least double the EF-S 24mm, perhaps around 300-400. Still a bit overpriced at 550 (current street price).
Excellent review Christopher. With all complaints set aside about this lens does Canon have any plans in the near future to right any of these wrongs with this lens?
Everyone seems to be bothered by the fact that it's a 2.8 but aside from that it seems to be a pretty sharp wide angle. Do you think Canon will give this a refresh with a better F stop or is that just getting into L lens territory?
Hey, if you could choose, would you take the 24mm STM oder the 24mm IS on a APS-C camera? Is the image quality of the 24mm IS that much better or is it only the IS which makes it more expensive? Thanks! :-)
If the lens interests me a lot because I take pictures of the miniatures since I have a 50 mm lens I have to move back further I have a PC camera a 550D canon so the 50 mm is considered an 80 mm I think the crop does not allow me to frame the whole staging as a whole, while the 24 mm is considered a 35 mm and I could get closer to the subject while keeping the depth of important field isn't it??
Oh my, I lived there! Cardiff! I miss it. anyway, which one would you recommend 24mm or 28mm? since at the moment, I owned the 28mm and I love it but I want to keep just one wide angle lens so should I buy the 24mm and get rid of the 28mm?
For real estate videos, do you recommend this one or the older 20mm f2.8... i need this type of size and weight for my gimbal.. so these are my 2 options. thanks
I really don't see any point in buying this lens, or probably any f/2.8 prime lens for that matter, and I'll happily stick with my Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8.
Hi Christopher, I have to say I love all your videos and it's very useful for me; however, as a beginner I'm still learning a lot. I'm going to be visit China with my family soon and I have an Canon 60D 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6, but this lens is way too heavy for me to self filming during my trip. Do you have any recommendation for a light lens that is good for self filming and can cover as much background as possible? THX.
By self filming, do you mean holding a camera in front of you? Then the Canon 10-18 might be good for you (although it is, of course, only for wide angles). Another option is the Canon 15-85 which is a great holiday lens
Hi Chris, I have a Canon 5d Mark II and am in need of a wide angle lens. I don't want to spend over $500 and it can be a used lens, only request is it must have auto focus. What lens do you recommend? Thanks.
Photographe Nomade Well, they're both very sharp from f/2.8, but the Samyang lens can go as wide as f/1.4, letting in 4 times more light. The Samyang lens is manual focus, and does not have image stabilization. Take a look at my review
So here's what I'm thinking, I want to use this lens for video. My plan is to use the stabilization of this lens with a full frame camera and a joby gorillapod to get the smoothest video possible (on the cheap, since I can't afford rigging), would it look good?
Christopher, awesome review mate!! In 2021, and as an owner of the EOS RP, would you in your professional opinion, recommend this lens for that slightly wider angle of view, the Sigma 24-70 DG OS HSM ART, or the Canon RF 35mm? I know these are very different lenses, but the 24mm and the 35mm are similarly priced where I live. Thanks for your opinion! Having a nice wide-angle lens with stabilization is key for me as I want to make videos.
Hello. I love your UA-cam channel. It is so helpful to me as a amateur photographer. I recently decided to buy a Canon 60D as my very first DSLR camera as starter. And I have been struggling to pick a good lens for general purposes. I watched your videos and I am considering the sigma 35mm and the samyang too. I will say that most of my pictures would be landscape and family, daily use. Also my budget is not really big for those canon L lens. Could you please recommend a good affordable lens as my first len? Thank you very much.
@@wonnie2610 i used 40mm pankake f2.8. for my first lens of canon 60D. Cheap and usefull. Best to learn. Then i will go for super macro, telephoto, portrait of any f1.4 and then ultra wide
i found this lens used in pristine condition to use as a replacement for my kit lens. this review confirmed my choice and i found the lens for only $130
@@christopherfrost this lens seemed to be unpopular... Haven't got much of review about it. I think it has nothing to shout about probably. Thanks for your reply again. Much appreciate it.
With the new 24 EF-S and Sigma 24 1.4 A coming the only use I can think of for this lens is for a wild life photographer that needs a lightweight wide angle lens for his full frame camera
im considering buying a 28mm 2.8 but i saw on the other comments that sigma 30mm 1.4 is better. so which is better, sigma 30mm 1.4 or canon 35mm 2.8 is usm? i do both photo and video. just need someones opinion. thank you
You say that but in your review of it, you mention how bad the CA is and it's not sharp until like f5.6 and up? If I remember correctly. I shoot mostly at 30mm (looked through alot of my shots), and I'm still stuck as to what to buy. Every lens seems to have its downsides unless its an expensive FF lens L/Sigma DG etc...really frustrating to choose a lens that's better than my kit lens but not massively expensive. A zoom from 18mm-70 be nice or a fast prime, with better image quality over the kit lens. I did look at the sigma 18-35 but keep reading and hearing about its abysmal auto focus inconsistency. Any help Chris?
James Chisholm The autofocus of the 18-35 is not great but it's not too bad either. And the 'Art' version of the Sigma 30mm lens is fairly nice and sharp
Thanks Chris. After reading comments below the 30mm f1.4 art video, then comparing it to the 35mm f1.4 DG hsm FF lens. I reckon I'll go for that, even though it means 56mm for now.
It's all about the weight. If you end up shooting 24 all the time, there is no point in lugging a zoom brick around. Plus the prime is far more discrete.
Could you help me? I'm looking for sharpness. Shall I buy 17-40 F4L, Canon 24mm 2.8 IS EF, 24mm Sigma art 1.4, 30 Sigma art 1.4 or 35mm sigma art 1.4? I really want sharpness but 17mm sound amazing. I have a 5d Mark III
I'm in the same situation - my 5D Mark III is coming tomorrow and I haven't even decided what lens to put on it yet. I'm deciding between a Canon 24-70 f4, Sigma 35mm f1.4 or the Canon 16-35mm f4. I'm very tempted to go for a prime only setup, as it forces you to be more creative with your shots and I think I'll develop my own style better that way.
+Khairul Azwari All kinds of good lenses out there. If you want something all in one, then the Tamron 24-70 VC USD has a fast enough aperture to be useful for portrait work
Canon went total arrogant while making this 24mm f2.8, 28mm 2.8 and 35mm f2. Building all three slower than the market standard of 1.8, yet priced quite high. They were like "you’ll get whatever we make and ypu have to take it". They paid the price for it. None of this lenses were taken generously or seriously by the customers.
No... Canon issue these lens to capitalise early buyers, and price conscious buyers can buy later. So from Canon's business perspective it is correct. They keep doing this to RF era as well. Everyone on internet shits on Canon now and claiming all jump to Sony. Yet financial results speaks truth.
please tell me about your opinions, what do you think about this lens? if i want to do videography, i better pick sigma 24mm f1.8 EX DG or this lens (24mm f2.8 IS USM)?
DCUPtoejuice It's a good choice but you have two others which could be better. The new EF 16-35 f/4 IS 'L', and the 35mm f/2 IS USM. I'd go for one of those instead, depending on how wide an angle you actually need.
Christopher Frost Photography Thanks for the reply! I just think that 35mm is not wide enough on APS-C. I want it to be more of a general-purpose lens. Thanks
pros use these all the time and who wants to carry around a 2lb lens for 12hrs straight when you stop down beyond 2.8 anyway? it's the amateurs who want .95 wide angles ..
At 2.8 it does not give any cause for anyone to buy. Not even with IS. The 35mm F/2 with IS is a dif story. This one. Id be happy with a Tamron 24-70 2.8 with VC that can be found on Ebay for about $850 now
Christopher Frost Photography oh I agree, my issue was that they priced it at a level that many zooms can compete with without adding any benefit that would encourage people to purchase it. If they had made it stand apart by giving it a F/2 or 1.8 aperture then it would attract more buyers.
Christopher Frost Photography I hear the 15 - 30 2.8 vc by Tamron is amazing too. I currently own the Canon 60D but within a few weeks I am upgrading to the Canon 6D full frame. What is your opinion on the image quality and low light performance of the 6D vs the 60D & 70D?
+Christopher Frost Photography Can you tel me what do you think about 28 IS USM in terms of autofoco while in low light and build quality? Are better these things in 24mm or 28mm? I plan for 70d (for video too)
I don't understand prime lenses with f2.8 no benefits at all. We have plenty 2.8 zoom lenses with excellent performance so why we need prime. Better get sigma 24 f1.4 art instead. Or something with Is like tamron 24-70 f2.8 vr
"Better get sigma 24 f1.4 art instead" And say goodbye to AF and IS aswell. Aperture is one thing, and as I see, f/2.8 is quite enough for FF in most of the case.
For handheld lowlight photography is a great lens. The factors that help in handheld low light photography are three.
1. Short focal length permits faster shutter speeds and that avoids blurry images.

It's not the same. This has IS and works on FF. This is worth at least double the EF-S 24mm, perhaps around 300-400. Still a bit overpriced at 550 (current street price).
Is this good for vlogging? Need some opinion though 🤔

Hi Christopher,
In your opinion, does the canon is better than the samyang ? (on FF)
Thank you
Photographe Nomade Well, they're both very sharp from f/2.8, but the Samyang lens can go as wide as f/1.4, letting in 4 times more light. The Samyang lens is manual focus, and does not have image stabilization. Take a look at my review
I see the canon has more chromatic aberration than the Samyang...
Very nice lens indeed.
Should i get it for 200 pounds?
SWEET JESUS you say "indeed" a lot.. but your videos are very informative, highly appreciated :P
Isabelle St-Laurent "indeed" he does
Amazing lens for landscape photography. Just as sharp as my 24-70 f2.8, great value for money!
Wouldn't it be a bit redundant to own the 24mm 2.8 in addition to a 24-70 2.8?
Thank you Chris. I like your reviews.
So here's what I'm thinking, I want to use this lens for video. My plan is to use the stabilization of this lens with a full frame camera and a joby gorillapod to get the smoothest video possible (on the cheap, since I can't afford rigging), would it look good?
I've no idea how the gorillapod would work but the image stabilization should help you
Christopher, awesome review mate!!
@@terrycheng9724 No offence man but I was asking Christopher specifically since he has a lot more experience with lenses than any of us.
Canon 1ds or 5d mki ??
Check out my Kit Lens Upgrade video, or my 18 Budget Lenses video
Christopher Frost Photography Thank you so much. I'm saving my money for the Sigma 35 mm Art series now,
@@wonnie2610 i used 40mm pankake f2.8. for my first lens of canon 60D. Cheap and usefull. Best to learn. Then i will go for super macro, telephoto, portrait of any f1.4 and then ultra wide
Hi cris do you ever tried canon 20mm f2.8 usm? wondering how that lens perform...
A review of that lens is coming one day. As far as I know, it's not that great
Hey Christopher im into amateur video work and I do some photography as well what prime lens would be good for filming and photos on my 700d
There are tonnes of nice options out there. The Canon 35mm f/2 IS USM might be a good start
i found this lens used in pristine condition to use as a replacement for my kit lens. this review confirmed my choice and i found the lens for only $130
that is ef-s version. That one doesnt fit on fullframe camera
@@pauljanssen7617 it’s not the pancake model. I also have a crop sensor
I have the 24mm STM and just got this lens used for $340aud, not a bad price i hope!
It's a good deal...in HK is about 300USD equivalent
Hi Chris, thanks for the effort! Would the twin 28mm f2.8 IS USM perform pretty much the same as this lens?
Very similar, I think
@@christopherfrost this lens seemed to be unpopular... Haven't got much of review about it. I think it has nothing to shout about probably. Thanks for your reply again. Much appreciate it.
It needs a wider aperture. If it was f2 or wider I'd get one.
Wayne Carter Agreed, I would suck up the bigger size if it just matched the 35mm f/2 IS better.
Carter what for?
@@klarion low light situations, MAYBE?
With the new 24 EF-S and Sigma 24 1.4 A coming the only use I can think of for this lens is for a wild life photographer that needs a lightweight wide angle lens for his full frame camera
im considering buying a 28mm 2.8 but i saw on the other comments that sigma 30mm 1.4 is better.
so which is better, sigma 30mm 1.4 or canon 35mm 2.8 is usm?
i do both photo and video. just need someones opinion. thank you
Take a look at my review of the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 ART. I think it's much better
For the price of the 24mm/2.8 and the 28mm/2.8 together I got a used 24-70mm/2.8L replacing both perfectly
Hey man, I decided! just bought 14mm 2.8 rokinon
Hi. Can you suggest me what lens should I have for my Canon 6D. I shoot portraiture and landscape.
+Khairul Azwari All kinds of good lenses out there. If you want something all in one, then the Tamron 24-70 VC USD has a fast enough aperture to be useful for portrait work
thanks man.
Can I use this lance with Canon 1300d ?
please tell me about your opinions,
what do you think about this lens? if i want to do videography, i better pick sigma 24mm f1.8 EX DG or this lens (24mm f2.8 IS USM)?
Please do a comparison between EFS 24mm f2.8 STM and this EF one
If you take a look at my videos, you'll be able to compare :-)
I want to get one wide angle lens with IS to shoot video on Mark II. Any reason this is not a good choice for video or a better option?
DCUPtoejuice It's a good choice but you have two others which could be better. The new EF 16-35 f/4 IS 'L', and the 35mm f/2 IS USM. I'd go for one of those instead, depending on how wide an angle you actually need.
Christopher Frost Photography thanks. I am now considering the 24-70mm f/4 canon. That might be a perfect video lens.
DCUPtoejuice It's meant to be good, but I'd probably go for the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC USD if you're going in that direction
Christopher Frost Photography thanks, I will look at that too. Concerned about weight and leverage.
thank you so much for nice video ! gif possible to give me your opinion which is sharper between this lens and canon 24 70 mark2 . thank you . C
Their sharpness is very similar
Christopher Frost Photography thank you for your comment ! I appreciate it and I always enjoy and study from your video !
how big is the focus throw?
I like your reviews and it has helped me, but I am Nikon user can you do reviews on Nikon lens as well please.
If I want a fast wide angle lens with image stabilization on an APS-C sensor (which I really do), is there a better option than this lens?
ParanoidAandroid The Canon 35mm f/2 IS USM lets in twice as much light
Christopher Frost Photography Thanks for the reply! I just think that 35mm is not wide enough on APS-C. I want it to be more of a general-purpose lens. Thanks
pros use these all the time and who wants to carry around a 2lb lens for 12hrs straight when you stop down beyond 2.8 anyway? it's the amateurs who want .95 wide angles ..
Hi Christopher I determine between 28 f1.8 canon or 30 f1.4 sigma ex
unsure what's use 1 thing
English is not proficient I'm sorry
Save up your money, and get the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 'ART'
Could you review YN600EX-RT flash please?
Is this same as the new canon 24mm stm lense ?
The STM one is for cropped sensor only and does not have stabilization, but I find it better value.
At 2.8 it does not give any cause for anyone to buy. Not even with IS. The 35mm F/2 with IS is a dif story.
This one. Id be happy with a Tamron 24-70 2.8 with VC that can be found on Ebay for about $850 now
Frankly, me too. Still, it's a nice little lens in its own right
Christopher Frost Photography oh I agree, my issue was that they priced it at a level that many zooms can compete with without adding any benefit that would encourage people to purchase it. If they had made it stand apart by giving it a F/2 or 1.8 aperture then it would attract more buyers.
Brian Michael
Agreed. I really need to review that Tamron lens soon, I think, I hear it's fantastic...
Christopher Frost Photography
I hear the 15 - 30 2.8 vc by Tamron is amazing too.
I currently own the Canon 60D but within a few weeks I am upgrading to the Canon 6D full frame. What is your opinion on the image quality and low light performance of the 6D vs the 60D & 70D?
Brian Michael
The 60D and 70D perform almost the same, but the 6D is a major improvement
I think these days this lens finds a home with vloggers with its is and wide angle
Has anyone tried this with the Viltrox speedbooster?
Will it work on the EOS650 film camera?
It /should/ do but I couln't absolutely guarantee it
Picked it up for $AU650 two days ago. Although the AF is slow on this very old camera, it works nicely.
but, if it is so good why is it a poor investment? If you want the modern L version you really have to pay much more.
Because 7 years ago (the time this review was made), this lens retailed for $800. Today, you can find it much cheaper.
nice review.
indeed, my ol' chap, indeed.
I got my 28mm 2.8 today for $150 i think i got a sweet deal.
+Ozmokicks Not a bad deal at all :-)
+Christopher Frost Photography Can you tel me what do you think about 28 IS USM in terms of autofoco while in low light and build quality? Are better these things in 24mm or 28mm? I plan for 70d (for video too)
+Ranez Gurubhai I haven't tested the 28mm lens but it should be virtually the same in every way to this 24mm version (except in 28mm)
👍 Thanks 🔥
NOT BIG DIFFERENCE WITH 24 MM STM
PANCAKE LENSE
I just got a copy of this lens for 70 pounds...
probably the ef-s one
28 IS is slightly better
nice
Thx
A good lens but pricey. No value for money.
I don't understand prime lenses with f2.8 no benefits at all. We have plenty 2.8 zoom lenses with excellent performance so why we need prime. Better get sigma 24 f1.4 art instead. Or something with Is like tamron 24-70 f2.8 vr
"Better get sigma 24 f1.4 art instead"
And say goodbye to AF and IS aswell. Aperture is one thing, and as I see, f/2.8 is quite enough for FF in most of the case.
Count how many times this guy says "indeed" and comment the number.
This lens is the worst one in my collection. The rubber ring is deteriorated and sticky now although it spends most of the time inside a dry cabinet 😂
