- In this awesome short clip, we get to see the inner workings of Genesis (with touring guitarist Daryl Stuermer) in 2007 in a hotel room in New York - working out the Genesis song, “Ripples.” Which melodically, among other attributes, is an amazingly beautiful song.
Phil’s voice is magical in this clip. Magical.
I love to hear him hum the melody when he doesn’t remember the words.
Something that amazes me about musicians and singers (especially someone like Phil who is truly gifted) is how effortless they make it seem. I mean these guys are sitting around in a hotel room and make that kind of music!? Incredible.
And then, in the little clip at the end, it’s hysterical to see the banter between them… a little fly on the wall moment…
I remember my first exposure to Trick of the Tail and it blew me away; Remains one of my all time favorite albums.
Could you imagine being in the room next door hearing this ?
I'd be shouting the lyrics to Phil.
I was thinking the same thing!
I can hear thru' these walls
I can hear it when they're foolin' around
I can hear thru' these walls
And I hear ev'ry sign, ev'ry sound
I can hear thru' these walls
In the dark with the shades pulled down
Ev'ry word that they say
Ev'ry noise they make feels it's coming my way
My fav'rite moment
Putting the glass up next to the wall
Imagination
Tho' I see nothing, I hear it all
Putting my sign up
Do not disturb me, speak or shout, inside out
Oh mind my clothes, they're all laid out
I can see thru' my windows
I can see the girls and the boys
I can see thru' my windows
And I can imagine the noise
I can see thru' my windows
I can see them playing with toys
Oh I hope it won't end
If I promise not to touch, just be a friend
Life is so lonely
I don't get high off just being me
I like pretending
Wanting to touch them, wanting to see
It's only normal
Creeping behind you, now don't shout, 'cos it's alright
They keep the windows locked and the door shut tight
Oo I'm feeling like I'm locked in a cage
No way in, no way out, and it gets so lonely
Am I really asking a lot
Just to reach out and touch somebody
'Cos when I look thru' my windows or open my door
I can feel it all around me
I can hear thru' these walls
I can hear it when they're foolin' around
I can hear thru' these walls
And I hear ev'ry sight, ev'ry sound
I can hear thru' these walls
In the dark with the shades pulled down
Ev'ry word that they say
Ev'ry noise they make feels it's coming my way
Ah yeah...
Ripples is such an unknown and underappreciated song amongst the casual fans. It's my favorite
One of my all time favourites from Genesis
It is a masterpiece, one of the beast at all !
It is the song that first grabbed me when I got "Trick"
Ripples is why I got into Genesis.
I saw them in Linz, Austria in 2007. UNFORGETABLE, when they performed Ripples, which I love since 1976. The middle part always brings me goosebumps.
🎵🎶
Dang. And then on stage BAM! Phil nails it. He 'inhabits' the song......every time. Just an amazing performer.
Ripples and Misunderstanding are my favourite tracks... brilliant..!!!!
Phil is a fantastik singer, like it.
Love this so much. He can sing anything❤
He could sing a telephone book.
A lot of work behind the scenes. Thank you for sharing.💛
My favorite song...!
Absolute tears as they run through this in the room.....🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲
Great guitar work
Great song….good to hear it like this……
What a voice.
Magnifico pezzo
Hey- keep it down in there!
What an amazing insight into the way the band works. I so enjoyed being in that room, amongst consummate musicians, listening to the acoustic guitars, my glass of deep red wine on the table, savouring the session. Thank you guys. Whatever the arguments about insensitivity towards playing the song Ripples, the London 08.07.07 concert I have on cd is the finest version I have heard; the closing bars move me to floods of tears every time I hear it. Nothing else on that wonderful live album hits me like that
Precious and beautiful stuff
Just brilliant...👍🏻🏴
Che meraviglia.
Love a good jam!!….the spirit comes alive.
Fantastic. ❤
TIMELESS
wow
Goose bumps
Very cool….awesome!!🇦🇺😎🇦🇺🤘👌
Can you imagine being outside the hotel room and just listening to the rehearsal?
Imagine having the room next door to that racket.
Wow... just wow
the person in the room next is like shut the f!!! up i need my sleep for the company meeting tomorrow
Keith Richards once said, "If you can't play a song on an acoustic guitar and it sounds great it's crap". By that token - and any other - this is a BRILLIANT song!
Yes, but this song was always acoustic. And I don't expect Keith would enjoy Ripples much. Could be wrong ...
Still can't quite forgive him for Sususudio and I Can't Dance... But this legendary bloke is a genius and a treasure, even if many music fans (myself included) sometimes dismiss much of his offerings as schmaltz. An imperfect human, who allowed himself to go in some weird directions, but who has brought so much beauty and joy to the world. Cheers, Phil!
American psycho? You’ll love the song after this
Someone starts banging on the wall “keep it down in there! Damn kids wanna party all night ya bunch of hippies…..!!” 🤣🤣🤣
I was literally going to post the same exact response. 😂😂😂
❤
❤❤❤❤❤
There's a lot of truth spoken in jest!!!
Imagine being in the room next to them.
I love Trick of the Tail……still have my Genesis vinyls….
Wow. Deeply moved here...
the amp for that double necked guitar goes up to eleven
Chicken skin...this is beautiful ❤️
Oh wow!
I'm sure you all checked your phone half way through like me
That double necked guitar looks like it weighs around 60 lbs!
brilliant info...i have a bio resonance frequency computer health system...based on tessla/rife ...russian tech......i can treat right down to dna/mnra...amazing
How marvellous
Tony's posture is terrible
It's sad how lazy Daryl's heavy folk-strumming brought this song down to the level of a campfire ditty. Steve would never play like that. Steve doesn't go danga-danga-danga like some normal rock guitarist. You'd figure after all those years, Daryl would learn how to play it right.
that's a bit strong, but i see where you're coming from....Daryl is a great player though, and much pressure has been put on him to be 'Steve'.
Remember, Daryl’s American. His playing & sensibility is totally different to Steve’s English way of playing. Very composed. Every note matters.
also in this video he's just slouching on the sofa while they thrash out the arrangement...it's not a performance.
@@christianparsons6050when you’re in the presence of Tony f**king Banks, you sit the f**k up! 😉
Attention!
This destroys a bit of the magic.
Do you never have a sneek pick into the kitchen when you have a good meal in the dining room ? 😂
it enhances it for me, because you see them go from regular people to something else in front of your eyes.
but I kinda get what you are saying, it does change how it might have seemed to have come from nowhere.
@@theoverunderthinkerIt's a song you like, right? Learn to play the song yourself, you may enjoy and appreciate it better.
@@candelise oddly enough I can play it on guitar. I learned it years ago. not really the point.
I have played in bands over the years and we covered a fair few Genesis songs (although not that one). what is also striking is that when you have the kind of collaborative cross talk in a band, like you see here, it has gone well. when it was more "look, you do your part and let me work out my part" the bands had trouble staying together.
my comment was meant to be more like: when you don't see the work that goes into it, a "magical performance" might seem to be just that: magic. when you see all that went into it, it seems more like craftmanship in some sense. not less impressive by any means, just different.
that was what I was trying to express, my understanding of where the prior commentor was coming from, not my lack of experiences of playing in bands or working out a song.
as a side note: this song took a long time. I actually had a book with the guitar chord diagrams over the music, so a "humming and strumming" version was pretty easy to get going. what was harder was that a lot of the chords were not correct when you had to finger pick them, so it was a lot of figuring out which voicing sounded correct. a lot of effort to get from one version to another, but helped my finger picking playing immensely (as did some Fleetwood Mac songs, but that is another story).
we never played it because it was a ballad and we had plenty already that were better known.🤷♂
For me it adds to it. Geniuses at play, creating.
Kids, this is what real music sounds like
what an honour to watch this
