I guess the really glaring thing is the mis-drawn arm which seems to be coming straight out of the bishop’s chest. I love the unearthly light of the picture though. Reminds me of El Greco

I actually think, and now that I see this I cant unsee it, that its TWO human figures. The anatomy of the arms actually works if theres a second head obfuscated by the beard which, oddly enough, seems to wrap it. The old man looks to be wearing green behind a figure clothed in white with their face covered by the beard of the man over his shoulder. Maybe the two are working together or this divine fatherly figure is shielding the eyes of the mortal from the serpent so as not to be taken by it. Perhaps this is just me trying to make sense of the anatomy but thats how I view this scene now.
I also first thought the structure behind the figures was a mound of meat, like bodies stacked up. Maybe the victims of this beast. It just seems gory, theres red and flesh tones in there. A grim scene really. Anyway, that's how I interpreted the visuals.

really good analysis. you wonderfully articulated everything I felt when seeing the painting for the first time, both good and bad. But I agree it does have some wonderful qualities. he just needs to keep looking and learning from better examples of greater paintings.

I couldn't put my finger on what was amateurish about it until you spoke about cohesion. It seems like there are multiple pictures fused into one.

.... i would't go that far. I would say that Gio is not (yet) fully aware of the varrious potentils of true pa8nting.
