Mark Kermode is a thoroughly nice man. I met him in Liverpool when he was doing a book signing and we chatted for a good ten minutes. He asked me what my favourite film is to which I replied Star Wars. When he asked me why, I replied that for its running time, it just makes me happy. He said that was the best answer he'd heard (because he doesn't like it). He said a lot of fans try to attribute some greater meaning to their enjoyment. Top bloke and well done on this performance.
I like Mark Kermode. He is the only film critic who's opinion I value. He has done a great job here. Probably the best version I have ever heard from a non-professional musician. Thanks Mark. Hope to hear more real soon.
So many negative comments. This bloke is NOT a musician. He's a complete amateur playing in front of a professional orchestra and an audience. Well done Mark Kermode....good effort.
Here because of Kermode's book "How does it feel", which marvellously depicts the effort he went to in order to pull this off. That'll do, Mark. That'll do.
Having read in Mark's book about the stress he put himself under for this performance I have to say I thought he did brilliantly. Great rendition of a difficult harmonica piece.
The soundtrack album features Tommy Reilly. One of the greatest players ever. He’s the guy you see on YT videos labelled John Barry. Which confuses people between the composer and the player.
This is an incredible effort from Mark. If you watch his Uncut video he basically gave himself around ten days to master this type of Harmonica. Certainly not a bad attempt. This piece of music is achingly beautiful, it really is. If someone where to ask me to define the word 'melancholy' I'd play them this song.
A favourite tune of my late father's (1946-2018). I compiled this version (taken from the red button broadcast) onto a CD for him to play in the car. He rarely ejected it. It was also one of the songs played at his funeral last August, the other being Joe Walsh's "Life's Been Good To Me So Far". A longer-than-lifetime legacy.
Gorgeous! I recently watched the movie again. It's a brilliant American classic movie. This theme song is beautiful, melancholy and will always stir my heart. This performance with the orchestra was delightful.🎵🎵🎵
I searched for this song for years and by coincidence, while watching an episode of the Simpsons, I found it and almost collapsed with so much happiness!! I really liked this version!! 💜
To all the idiots on here you do realise he's a film critic and not a musician, of course it's not going to be perfect. At-least he has the courage to stand up and have a go.
Cowboy Ehh You got A Strong Back, I Will work you Hard Joe Buck It Will Be Joyess Lets Get Down On Our Knees Where Here Right Here I Pray to the Toilet I Pray to Anything A Beautiful Tune Done My Second Tour In Vietnam when the The Movie Came Out In the Fall Of 1969. Hehe.. yeah he's not very good at playing this piece is he? He really has no business being in front of that orchestra, but as a harp player myself it's always cool to learn that someone whom you like for other reasons plays the harmonica. I'm sure he'd get there with more practice.
I've just read his autobiography on which he describes his recurring anxiety nightmares about this event . Fair play to the good doctor, he always gets stuck in
The man with no name, Charlie Allnut, Uncle Ethan, Tom Joad, Howard in The Treasure of Sierra Madre and Mark Kermode. Mr Kermode joins my list of heroes.....he knows them all, no explanation needed.
Well frankly, I thought he did alright - people are simply being way too critical. I mean come on, give the guy a break - Kermode's a film critic, not a musician - what the hell are you expecting, Toots Theileman?! Takes guts standing up and performing in front of an audience like that when you're not an actual musician by trade, not to mention with a professional orchestra at one's back, and knowing you may likely hit a few bum notes. I can fully understand and appreciate his statement of relief at the end. But of course, there's always the inevitable cries of, "Worst version ever! Too many mistakes! Blah Blah, Bloody Blah." Seriously?! Give us YOUR version and then maybe we'll compare notes, eh? PErhaps a little more constructive critical comment, instead of the standard brevity of "This Sucks!", etc. It was, as someone else said below, a valiant effort, and full credit to him. He made a better go of it than I could. Cheers.
Fair dues, Simon, I can't really disagree with you there - a far more carefully considered and justifiable criticism, which is more than I can say for some of the other monosyllabic vitriol on display elsewhere. :-)
Well said Adrian, totally agree, you can tell he loves the song and got one almighty buzz doing that perfect or not, life's about those memorable moments and that will be one for him perfect or not good on him:)
there might be a few faults at the beginning, but please remind that the oiginal version is differently orchestrated with the back-up starting much earlier. so mark was pretty much on his own and he did very well.
Just read one or two comments near wet my self laughing. Some clown says "its pleasant but does not come close too the Toots classic"What the Fuck are you on,dont you get it at all. It's not about comparing the 2 versions, one guy has been playing for one week the other is one of the greatest ever you NOB! I would like to hear you play along with a professional orchestra. It's a big well done from me Mark.

Top bloke and well done on this performance.
This tune always gives me goosebumps. There's so much emotion involved in it, especially having seen the movie!

Good effort but still shit so why bother? Mark kermodes ego that's why
I play chromatic also. I've no problem with your comment except he is clearly not a complete amateur.
🙏❤🙏
In that case he should not play in public with a massive audience. Start in a club and practice!
@@Paul_C He clearly has been practising quite a lot. How well do you play ?
@@paulmartin39 No, but you get my drift.
Here because of Kermode's book "How does it feel", which marvellously depicts the effort he went to in order to pull this off. That'll do, Mark. That'll do.
For such a small, humble instrument, it is intensely difficult! No electronics, buttons, switches, knobs, speakers.....all human technique. Beautiful.
Having read in Mark's book about the stress he put himself under for this performance I have to say I thought he did brilliantly. Great rendition of a difficult harmonica piece.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. No words are needed, our own thoughts fill them in.
You played with spirit, if not with style. Nice one, Mark.
Beautifully done! 🎶
Considering the difficulty - i think Mark played it brilliantly.
+Anthony Mead At last! Someone with a heart. Thank you! WELL DONE MARK!
Anthony Mead
2020 still impressive, difficult piece John Barry made it look easy full credit to you Mark
Toots Thielemans made it look easy, he was the harmonica player for the movie, John Barry was the composer
The soundtrack album features Tommy Reilly. One of the greatest players ever.

Fantastic ,total respect to him!!!

That was brilliant well done Mark!
GREAT JOB !!!!!!!!!! Brings back so many GREAT MEMORIES.........THANKS 🙂
Excellent job Markle listen to over and over.... greatly appreciated...thankyou
Beautiful!
I applaud mark for playing that tune. Very well done.
Well done Mark.....I think you did a great job of one of the most iconic movie themes ever....
I love this song, this melody, this masterpiece.....!
Sweet, tender, lovely, emotional, sad...., very sad.....
Gorgeous! I recently watched the movie again. It's a brilliant American classic movie. This theme song is beautiful, melancholy and will always stir my heart. This performance with the orchestra was delightful.🎵🎵🎵
For a non-professional musician he did "bloody" good. I can't even play a harmonica but he had the chops to do it his way...BRAVO.
Best reaction! Feel de moment...and play well!
Bloody top effort, what bravery too, Mark did superbly! 👍👍
Well played Mark . Great job .
I searched for this song for years and by coincidence, while watching an episode of the Simpsons, I found it and almost collapsed with so much happiness!!
I really liked this version!! 💜
Now you can watch the movie and be blown away again..
Absolutely beautiful thank you Mark Kermode. 👏👏👏❤
Great job Mark, lot of nostalgia there, beautifully done.
Beautifully played Mark.
To all the idiots on here you do realise he's a film critic and not a musician, of course it's not going to be perfect. At-least he has the courage to stand up and have a go.
+Ben Hibburd I think there should be imperfection in the song, it matches the imperfection of Joe Buck's life.
+Ben Hibburd Thank you.
+Ben Hibburd Also, he said in a vlog just before this he only had a week to learn it.
You say courage, I say arrogance.
Not a musician? you never heard of the Dodge Brothers?
Mark great job....really enjoy it ....l listen to it over and over....job well done
Beautiful rendition of a truly amazing piece of music...
Brilliant job Mark. Love it.
Beautiful song, beautifully played.
Ok. Technically flawed, but who wouldn't be? He played with feel and that's what music should be all about.
He’s a movie critic that’s why
@@kinglewy007 Flawed? Wasn't that the whole point of the film? That's why his performance worked.
@@peterwelsh3820 I wasn’t the guy who said it was flawed 😂
For that is not a musician that is absolute quality well done mark
Gorgeus, this sound its so, so beautiful.
Dennis Agra toots thielemans is laughing now...........what ever

This bring out so much emotion. The best of what music can be.
I didn't know Mark played the harmonica! Too cool.
Well, he doesn't really, as evident here.

@@ThawedTroglodyteJury He does. But not a chromatic one, which he didn't realise until a week before
Very well done,Thank you
Amazing for someone who is a film critic? So beautiful!!
so lovely thanks Mark
Brilliant makes me cry everytime I hear it no matter who plays it
I've just read his autobiography on which he describes his recurring anxiety nightmares about this event . Fair play to the good doctor, he always gets stuck in
An artist should suffer for their art: not the fan.
Mark I have seen u in Soho I so want to shake ur hand as I cried. Wonderful & then Bond episode

SHUT UP he is wonderful and I am from Boston. Brought this man to tears... Mom and dad played and dad had Hammond B3
Well done Mark that was a great effort
just reading Mark Kermode's book, not the complete disaster i was expecting!
I'm reading the same book. He made it sound very traumatizing
Me too! Felt nervous watching it and it happened ages ago but he did a pretty good job considering
Lovely song
Wow. One of my favorite movies ever and my best review by far.
This is wonderful
wish i could jam like that 😩🥰
The greatest score ever! EVER!!!
After only one weeks training that is magnificent, I wish I could achieve that, I love the harmonica!
Nice the guy is legend I watched all his movies he recommendeds
Marvelous...maravilloso todos los que puedan tocarlo.🙏🏼
hello Jason and he did well playing on such a difficult instrument for the first time in his life . Go Mark

Bet Mr Kermode has sat through the film, harmonica in hand and played along. I like him, he's explained things in film i had totally missed.
Very good Well done my man,

Superb !
What character to do that…..totally outside his comfort zone & professional background, perhaps even his childhood background.
Amazing !who would have thought, takes some doing.👍
