I dont think that was the best way to put it to frame the boycott as stupid bc this makes it more clear why they it's kind of the only boycott that could work - the game is fucking free, there's not even adverts popping up as you play that they can get revenue off of from f2p players, the money is made ENTIRELY by keeping people engaged and wanting the newest characters. Whether people are playing without spending money or not playing at all literally doesn't affect their bottom line in the slightest, but making a fuss on those surveys? Making noise on the Internet? It's pretty much the only chance non-chimese players have of being listened to 😅 It still feels stupid when the player base is SO massive and most haven't even heard of this petition so the numbers are, like, less than 1 percent of the player base or something, not actually a big deal, but it's still more sensible than going "I'm going to totally ignore this free thing that's so massive it won't notice my non-existant impact leaving in the slightest, that'll show them who's boss!"
@pipedream2556 as a f2p game, genshin gets money from data monetisation, sponsorships, and more. they get money from people downloading the game and playing it. to truly boycott genshin, people need to avoid the company entirely. I do understand what you mean about how we can't do much so spreading awareness is the best thing available, but it doesn't really DO anything in these circumstances. If people were committed to completely block out hyv from their routine then yes, awareness is key. but that's not the case because as mujin said we are all genshin addicts. I truly wished hyv was a better company who followed through with the representation of the cultures they chose to include in the game, but they really couldn't give 2 fucks unless they're losing millions of players and millions of money :( They prioritise the cn community so unless majority of the cn community brings this up to attack hyv, then nothing will happen. In saying that, that will never happen. the cn community wont speak up because they have lived with the mindset that white skin is attractive which boosts sales and that makes both hyv and cn happy.

However, there is a basically 0% chance for Chinese people to even care about this to cause drama for Hoyo.
Most sane people in the west also dont care. The average person looks at something that represents them thinking "Its Nice" but they also dont care if it dont
That's the part that is so confusing to me, I don't think any rational person would complain if they added characters with different skin tones, but it's a game made and developed in China made for a Chinese playerbase
Yeah, I completely understand this. I feel like it would be totally different if each character named after a deity was supposed to BE that deity. But where their names are simply just inspiration, they aren't really obligated to change anyone.
Funny thing about Olorun , at least if you look on wikipedia , Olorun is shapeless , genderless and in spirit form . The photo we see is just one depiction/interpretation or concept art of him from an artist , while in actuality Olorun doesn't look like anything . This is one of the passage from wikipedia "Olorun has no gender in the Ifá Literary Corpus, and is always referred to as an entity who exists in spiritual form only. Historically, the Yoruba worship Olorun through the agency of the orisa; thus there is no image, shrine or sacrifice made directly towards Olorun, since Olorun is known to BE everything, and everywhere." Something about that feels so disingenuous. It feels more pandering than it is representation. I have a Kenyan friend look at the Natlan trailers, and he was so elated just by the fact that his culture is being represented. From architecture to clothing, and even some potential myths and legends that might have inspired the game. Skin color would have never even been mentioned had I not asked him about his opinions on it just to see his reaction. He only answered me with "And?". That one reply says so much more to me than the entirety of this so-called boycott could ever do.
I feel like having different skin tones should be the bare minimum. People not in the west also have varying skin tones! Honestly not just SEA. We have a huge both legal and black market whiting products lines in africa which not only makes millions (heck I know many colleagues in medical school who dropped out just to become bootleg steroid creams makers and now they make more than a consultant). The health risk are also quite bad. It depends on the dose but I had to try and later fail to save many young girls who took insanely high amounts of black market steroids so they become whiter.

I've heard from some Chinese creators that in terms of the singing style, the actress was actually bad and was hired due to nepotism rather than skill.
As a Chinese, some insights here: Chinese people/East Asians do not "hate" black people; rather, they simply do not prefer "darker skin tones." Westerners might spend a lot of money tanning to achieve a bronzed skin tone, which shows they have enough leisure time to go on vacations outside of work. In contrast, Chinese/East Asians do the opposite; even on the beach, they try to cover every inch of their skin, and there are many "whitening" cosmetics available on the market. This is because, in East Asian culture, fairer skin is associated with higher-status professions that do not require outdoor work, unlike manual laborers who get tanned from working outside. Due to this cultural subconscious, introducing dark-skinned characters is more than likely to result in poor sales. This is not just the case with miHoYo; no Chinese game company would risk doing so if the game and your work KPI depended on the sales of each banner. At most, dark-skinned characters might be included as a minor element, but they will never become the mainstream. even in Natlan.
Those standards exist in the west too, they've just very actively been trying to push them out of the culture for decades now. Even in places like Brazil where everyone is dark skinned they still view the lighter skinned people as a sign of status. But especially in America having that preference is considered racist so nobody is allowed to express it. If you look at old fairy tales like Snow White it's very clear pale skin has historically been seen as a sign of beauty. Definitely not a unique Asian phenomenon.
As someone from Philippines I think it's kinda the same. (Especially in my family) Also we're obsessed with your country (+ Japan and Korea) just sayin
You were right until u said that other Chinese games wouldn't risk putting darker skinned characters on a banner. Reverse 1999 as an example has had many darker skinned characters on banner

fun fact: Boycott is named after Captain Charles Boycott who was a British landlord Irland in 1880 who treated his tenants so bad, that soon nobody wanted to do any kinds of deals with him anymore. His name was then used by the London Times to describe this kind of resistance.
I'm from Korea and my friends who play Genshin are mostly like "That character looks cool but how good are they?". It's mostly Meta here and their waifus and husbandos are usually top tier characters.
You would probably reconsider if the characters look like Concorde characters. The truth is, mihoyo characters are both meta and waifu. The least waifu character is still very good looking.
@SourDonut99 Highly agree Concorde is peak representation with little player based since the character models are repulsive. It's really aesthetic first, meta then for most of the casual gamers
And HoYo fucks over the very few (6/85 currently) brown/black characters they even have by making them all like mid-tier at best, which is partially why people buy into the narrative that "brown characters just won't sell in Japan/Korea/China" like this guy does in this video. Kaeya's OK, Xinyan is bad, Dehya's bad, Candace is OK, Sethos is OK, and Cyno is like "OK-to-good". And then you look over at Star Rail and see the sole darker skinned character Arlan is literally the worst character in the game. We have yet to get a *strong* melanated character in these games. Strong like Kazuha, Hu Tao, Furina. Until we get that we don't have definitive data that they can't sell well in these places, because HoYo keeps handicapping the few we have while knowing that meta is a big reason a lot of people desire certain characters.
Personally, I wish that Natlan characters have more melanin, and I do understand and agree with why people are dissatisfied. However, the boycott was a poor decision that was also planned out impulsively. a note: I am not from the West nor am I light-skinned. I am adding this since a lot of people talking about this situation here like to downplay genuine criticism by calling others “Western” or “woke”.

Heyyyy I have Madagascar origins from my mom’s parents! My last name is from there! Ok to be serious there’s a ton of ppl from Latin and African countries that DO care. I’m mixed and tan and DO care. Representation things aside you can clearly tell that most of the natlan characters were designed with dark skin in mind. Like their tattoos barely pop on light skin, and with the edits they pop even more
Lmao there was a dude who posted that he bought the Nilou skin in the GI facebook group for Madagascar players 😂. And there are still people who asks for shops to buy GC and Welkins. It's so true, Madagascar players really dgaf.
@@bibuleolorun, iasan, kachina and mualani are the only character si could identify with tatoos and my observation proves that what you said is a lie. Mualani shares complexion with hawaii people, and her tats are visible as far as I am concerned. Then there is olorun who literally has black tatoos that would be almost invisible on a black person. Then there is Iasan and kachina seem to have the same tatoo and so I will agree that white tatoo on black skin is better than white on literal "white" skin. but one character of like 8 isn't exactly "mostly". I hate liars like you ngl. You just make claims that gullible people like me fall for and spread misinformation.
I'm just frankly apathetic with the community for the most part. All I know is that Natlan is giving us a shark girl who's Neuvilette 2.0, and I like her
I think the most fun parts of the fandom are actually the people who theorize over the lore. That's where people don't care about appearance, bad or good kits, lacking endgame. They appreciate the lore the game drops, read artefact and weapon and sometimes even predict future content.
i have african friend who play genshin and one of them said, "Me, personally about this skin tone issue in Genshin? I don't care about it. I'm just happy our culture is still getting recognized within the game."
interesting, I’ve seen a fair bit of Latin Americans, Africans, etc. on the opposite side of the argument as well and wanting more representation. I guess it’s just a matter of perspective. I’m Asian, not one of the cultures being talked about in Natlan, but I personally don’t like how Mihoyo represents cultures so well, but not the people of those cultures. It’s not really my problem to talk about, I guess

Key word being "personally". It's all about perspective. It's okay to be angry if you feel like your culture is being misrepresented. It's also okay to not care about it whether or not you are from said culture. This boycott however, is a complete joke. Half those people who signed the petition are probably still supporting the very game they wish for change in. Like make it make sense.
@@kialo2085 HELP YEAH "hey guys I signed the boycott, BUT im still playing genshin, it's not like im paying money!" i swear half the people in our community have no idea what boycott means
The sales of the Nahida banner proves that Genshin Impact players are hypocrites and don’t really believe in what they’re saying about racism and will still spend money on the game, so this conversation is pointless in my opinion 🤷♂️
Unfortunately we are living in a world where people can't understand taking aspects of culture and just changing them. God forbid if these people played sonic adventure 2 where the pyramids was a secret launch site
You forgot that people pull for power. Nahida could have been the ugliest character and people would still pull for her because archons are meant to OP.
this is the most pathetic boycott i’ve ever seen, like i see tweets being like “guys stop buying stuff so we can boycott” YOU CANT BOYCOTT A *FREE* MULTIPLAYER GAME BY NOT BUYING ANYTHING, YOU BOYCOTT BY REFUSING TO PLAY AND RAISING UR VOICE. gamble addicts try to quit genshin challenge (also i’m not on hoyos side, i wish the characters would atleast be a little darker)
Why do the characters have to be darker if the game developers don't want to make that? You can go play that new WoW expansion if you want to play as a black woman.
@@pdpgb there's no way you can objectively look at some of the designs and think they look good. some of them would benefit from darker skin due to colour theory
Playing the free game for free without spending money means there will be less people spending on the actual game?? That seems like basic math personally I quit Genshin 100% but I know a lot of people can’t do that because they’ve invested a lot of time but by not giving Hoyo money it shows that they’re making a statement I just hope the banners don’t sell well.
@@pdpgbBecause if they claim to be for a world-wide audience, and make countries based off various cultures, the characters should reflect the cultures they're using. One of the characters is literally a Nigerian deity who is very pale. Even Chinese players are confused.
The western VAs are so funny: "I refuse to support a company that does this!" Me: "So you're quitting your job and role as voicing [this character]?" "..........no." Sums up the whole "movement". Keep doing their bidding.
@SamIamNot13 But if she's telling everyone else to boycott Hoyoverse, but she's not willing to do it herself, she's a hypocrite that makes the whole movement look like a big joke to everyone looking at them, including people that are considering supporting them, or even making change. People who are all "rules for thee but not for me" are corrupt, and most of all show they don't even believe what they say they believe in. That kind of corruption should be opposed, especially if you agree with them, because I want what I believe in to be taken seriously.
My only problem with the Sumeru characters is that half of them are desert dwellers, yet they look like they’ve never been outside once. Like, does Hoyo expect me to believe these people didn’t develop some level of a tan or sun burn? Come on, it isn’t hard to design characters with a different skin color. They’re still going to be incredible and lovely.
Exactly! Melanin helps protect us against the sun’s UV rays. The more time you spend outside, the more melanin you produce. There’s no way these characters can live their whole lives in a desert region without getting a tan. Or they’d be completely covered from head to toe in clothes to avoid sunburns lol
@@auklett Yeah, like the Gerudo Tribe and Ganondorf in Legend of Zelda. They live in the desert, so obviously they’d have a darker skin color. And I’ve never heard anything negative being said about the Gerudo, or at least not on the same scale as Genshin’s controversy. The only Sumeru character I actually defend being pale is Nahida since she’s literally been locked up for her entire life and rarely goes outside. Of course she wouldn’t look tan. She needs vitamin D!
@@razrafz True. Actually, if you think about it, Hoyo could probably fix this problem easily if they used the “fictional world” to their advantage to talk about the Sun. Maybe they’re waiting to talk about it in Natlan since the Sun is often associated with Fire? If they could do this, they’d probably have something to hide behind other than saying “Genshin is fictional” and leave it at that.
Genuine question, but isn't it only cyno, dehya, Candace and sethos from the desert in the sumeru cast? Rest everyone was from the rainforest, right? Although, I would have liked them to be a bit more darker, i thought the mihoyo was very consistent in skin tones in game. Like all tan people, playable and unplayable in sumeru, had some link to the desert and pale skin characters to the rainforest. In all honesty, teyvat's geography doesn't make any sense to me with how everyone's skin tones being exactly the same across the board. Next thing we know they'll be telling us that teyvat doesn't even have a real sun.
"WE WILL BOYCOTT GENSHIN IMPACT!!!" "How will you do that?" "BY PLAYING THE GAME!!!" No wonder the Hoyo never gave a crap. Their idea of boycott undermines actual boycotts that result in people being actually hurt.
The "i spent thousands I cant possibly delete" comment is so funny to me Two gachas I'd spent probably a couple hundred + on over the 2 years I played them I dropped so easily when they made stupid changes to the game, no hesitation and no looking back The weakness of others amuses me
it is called the sunk cost fallacy and it will keep people playing... especially if they were at the top of a pvp type game. Drop 20k. Drop 50k Then drop the game. A few hundred over 2 years? Bro I spent more than that the first month of genshin LOL. I have quit a few games where I dropped a few hundred within the first few months but if I built it into a habit for years and spent several tens of thousands? ITS FAR HARDER. It is called an addiction. And sunk cost fallacy is a well known psychological phenomena.
it happened to me when i got massive burnout from playing genshin, where i log in for a few days then never touch the game for a few months until a new character dropped or character im interested in dropped, though i never spent a lot for the game, just a few rupiahs either welkins or just primos. I still like the game, but of course burnout always happens, like for HI3 i played the game since 2020 and just recentlyi decided to uninstall since i havent coming back to the game due to burnout and just overall exhaustion with the game, even though i have good characters and stuff. Of course its never easy to let go of your game when you have spent hundreds of hours and cash for it, but then again, eventually all games will shutdown and when that time comes even they will have to be ready for it.
i can relate, i spend thousands of my salary to Genshin Impact too. but after 2 years of me playing Genshin and requesting a skip conversation and skip dialogue and Mihoyo not adding it, i immediately uninstalled. seriously its so time consuming listening to dialogue and auto convo is not that fast.
I think I lost braincells after learning how backwards some of these people are. As a POC, I know for a fact that these people do not care and they will continue to not care about how we feel about their actions and that's just how some things are. You're allowed to be upset about it but sometimes you have to realize that you're barking up the wrong tree.
Legit in the attempt to "stop racism" in the game, they end up looking racist themselves. Genshin actually does a whole lot to make reference to various aspects of different cultures; Sumeru is RICH with that, but basically it means nothing to them if characters don't have the skin colour they want. So they're essentially saying "your culture and ethnicity doesn't matter if you don't have the skin I imagine you'd have". And a lot of times, the people complaining are white people who don't actually know anything about the culture, just stereotypes about it. Dori is the best and most hilarious example of this; people call her a racist/orientalist character towards Arabic people, literally because they remind her of Aladdin. When in reality, Dori is Ottoman Turkish based. Everything about her points to that and her design is actually super fascinating and rich in references to that period of history (plus while she is 1001 nights inspired, it's from the Djinn and Merchant story, not Aladdin). It basically shows that people's extent of knowledge about ME culture was just Aladdin, and they ignorantly misculture a character because of it.
Noticed how nobody from the English VAs who spoke out on twitter has said anything since? They were probably told to shut up by their agency and/or dubbing studio because it's a bad look and unprofessional. I mean what if mihoyo drops the entire English voice dub or studio and replaces them like Snowbreak? Not only will the VAs lose their big time gig but all who works in the shadows such as the translators and audio engineers would also lose their gig and mihoyo is a gigantic client that anybody would like to keep working with.
Skin color of fictional video game characters is such a weird hill to die on. Imagine kicking up a fuss over an in game character not being black enough for you and dissing your employer directly on social media. It's so stupid
I'm excited to see the upcoming drama on Twitter when the fate collab with hsr happens. Since if they think hoyo does a poor job ohoho they haven't seen fate
@@SenseisbinahAnd as Mujin said, a big percentage of boycotters are most likely teenagers 😂 So they probably don't have a job and no bills to pay so they can just lounge around Twitter all day looking for the next drama they can claim to support and forget in like what? 2 weeks? 😂
I can't speak for Natlan but I am an Indian so I can speak for Sumeru a bit. No one here gives a hell about what skin colour the characters are And I am yet to see Arabs get angry that there is not a dark character thats represent them. Do you know why? Bc our culture surpasses skin colour but your brain has not. Our culture can be represented perfectly without the need to fit in darker characters. You all sound like a joke here where we, who the culture belong to don't get angry but you do in our behalf on topics we don't care about. Also, if Mihoyo bends their knee and do make the character darker, they can kiss goodbye to their asian market. I can promise Asia offers far more than America and Eroupe combined do.
@KnightGunny is it really forcing an ideology for wanting more diversity in playable characters for a region based game? Neither you or OP can speak for everyone on this. Baldur's Gate 3 is successful af regardless showing that diversity isn't what makes a game unpopular or bad. What makes a game unpopular or bad is the fact that it's shit.
I'm part of the arab community and let me tell you back in the sumeru contreversy days people in the genshin arab community were making fun of the americans who were complaining about skin color we really had our fun with that
Presch brotha, fellow indian here , i liked sumeru, i don't give a damn abt a representation ,character's Skin-color or some other shit in a fictional game as long as i get to enjoy it.
As someone from Latinamerica, I don't care about this, and by "this" I mean I don''t care that the characters are not "dark enough". There are people of different colors in Latinamerica, not only black. If anything I am very happy they got inspired by my culture. It is just that, an inspiration, not a representation. edited to add context
As someone from South Asia, I’m happy and glad that they used cultures and traditions from our regions, but why leave the people out of it? It’s like taking our history and leaving out the feelings of people. I don’t play genshin that much but during sumeru I did play seriously for awhile. In Asia it is considered that “white” is pretty so to finally see a dark skinned character be so “hot” *dehya* it was really encouraging, idk why people say dark skinned characters aren’t hot, I mean I’ll smash both dehya and cyno-
As someone from South Asia as well, I agree with everything U said, xinlen (I don't remember her name, is that it???) would look amazing with darker skin but.. tbh.. at the end of the day, its a game from a chinese company, they will also keep their culture (light skin = pretty) in their games. Erasing culture is bad tho, imagine U search up a god & see a game/anime character instead??
Ehh because it's fiction and they want to design unrealistically beautiful characters so people will spend money and roll for them. Japanese people don't look like Ayaka or Raiden either but you don't see them complaining. Only when it comes to skin color specifically is it seen as legitimate because westerners are so obsessed with race.
@@pdpgb exactly! Like we have 6 Inazuma chars whose families lived there for centuries and there were no foreign ancestors we know about. AND THEY ALL R BLOND Guess light hair is an Inazumian trait? I don't know if someone mentioned it on teh comments, but there is an extra layer in this controversy. Asian people don't seem anime characters as white, but as Asian. And Asian players prefer to buy this kind of characters than dark skinned ones.
I'm not trying to accuse anyone, but that mindset seems to be rather common. Perhaps it's because some authors/artists can't exactly go to a specific country to get an accurate depiction of a character's origin? Like yeah, there are some authors that do it, but everyone has limits for their own budgets I guess. And I admit, as a writer myself, I sometimes project my culture's lifestyle to a lot of my characters. I've been trying to break it though 😅 I think one example of Asian people seeing anime characters as specifically Asian is Bersek's author. I don't remember much personally, but I remember that even though Guts is apparently supposed to be European, Norse, i don't recall the rest, the thing that confused me the most was that the author said he still considers Guts to be Japanese.
99% of Genshin players don't even hang out on social media. If people want to complain be my guest, but these boycotts will never work, just give it up already. Also for reference, Genshin still gets about 60-65 million monthly players according to Activeplayer. 100k signatures is a drop in the ocean in comparison.
Like they would listen to reason with that kind of bs they came up in the first place. And oh well, another case of the loud minority being too loud I guess.
As an asian person I would like to say that Asians do not hate black or dark skinned people, It's just that asian beauty standards vastly prefer light skin. One of the main reasons for this is because In Asia, having darker skin usually implies that you are of the lower class and work in the field or other labor intensive jobs while lighter skin usually means that you are rich and get to stay inside. Unfortunately, this thought pattern (which seems to have started in ancient China) is flawed since humans have various skin tones and can't all be light skinned. In fact this seems to be the opposite within the western world as the rich would try to get tanned as a status symbol of being able to afford expensive machines or vacations. Anyways, this has led to skin whitening products becoming popular all throughout Asia, especially within southeast asia since southeast asians naturally have darker skin tones. One not so funny story I heard from a blasian classmate is that her chinese aunt tried to give her skin whitening cream due to asian beauty standards. But yeah whenever something like this happens in asia, It's usually just blissful ignorance instead of actual racism, something that is becoming increasingly common in the west. EDIT: Jesus the comment section is becoming a shitshow. the purpose of this comment is to just provide a possible explaination to why dark skinned characters are quite rare in genshin. I am personally am not fond of the "colorist" aspects of asian culture, I'd even argue that asians are pretty racist in certain aspects.
Yeah but they still hate people with dark skin you can't take African cultures and not have African people in the game it's very weird and speaks volumes this world loves black culture but hate the people If genshin was more open to pov then they would make twice as much as they do now but because only Asians play the game I understand why they stick to the Asian and white audience but don't use other pov cultures then
Even if the CN community does care, miHoYo wouldn't care unless we report them to the government or sue them. You'd be surprised by how much controversy miHoYo gets into in the CN community, and very rarely does miHoYo actually listens to us.

You speak facts my friend. The reason why I even play this game is because the characters look nothing like real human beings. I'd be playing Cyberpunk or some other game with realistic graphics otherwise.
I don't play Genshin and I don't really care but in my opinion dark skintones would've been more appropriate. Not saying that your opinion isn't valid btw just sharing :p
China isnt very fond of having black characters shown in most promotional material. If you look at posters for movies from Marvel and star wars, they hide black characters in the back or remove them completely. This has also been done in many other movies with dark-skinned characters. They rather show more fair-skinned characters to promote it to the people of china, japan, and korea. As an African male, id love to see Genshin actually add more character that have my skin tone, but they just dont like characters like that.
It's actually a shame, and as a Chinese person I can say that these beauty standards suck. They hinder the creative and diverse potential of character design in video games by applying real life standards to them. Not to mention that it fosters really unhealthy mindsets amongst actual people- East Asian people aren't paper white, yet they're under the impression that that's the only standard of "beauty", and a lot of physical & mental health risks come along with these societal pressures. But honestly, at this point you can't really expect the company to change their mind anymore, as long as they get income they won't listen all that much.
Probably because they're a company that needs too much money. So, what do you expect? They'll change for the better to add more diversity? Of course not. As much as I would definitely love more darker skinned characters, I know as HECK that they won't.
So they should simply avoid adding anything even remotely associated with our cultures! Don’t add the names of our gods, or our music end of story. Problem solved.
Probably marketing strategy too. In the end they have to pander to their biggest money income: CN player. They can, but they need to consider because in the wnd they're company looking for profit. Honestly I think people should pander to CN player instead of Hoyo if they want brown or dark skin character. They hold biggest decision after all.
@@admirekashiri9879 I agree, it doesn't make any sense to not want to include the people from the culture... Here’s what would happen if Hoyo DID change the skin tones: 1. The community would still find something to complain about because when will they ever stop? 2. China and Japan would boycott because they don’t want darker complexions, and at THAT point it’s game over for Genshin Impact. So trust me, this boycott is going nowhere. Those boycotters are hypocrites who’ll forget everything they said the day Natlan comes out.
this is a wild situation to begin with, like it wouldn't hurt to add/redesign some other characters they are gonna be releasing in natlan but considering most of genshins player base doesn't seem bothered by it hoyo doesn't see it fit to do so
As someone who lives in a country where there are many diversity, skin color, culture, religion, etc. I couldn't relate to why Western people are so sensitive about skin color and I never understood how skin color is considered as a culture, isn't culture something that can be shared with others? it's not just western ppl tho, also the game is representing ancient latin and african cultures from back when the skin diversity was just dark skinned there were no white ppl till the europeans came to the land. I too live in a semi devirse country (i'm from latin america) but my country is diverse only because of several historical events. If hoyo wants to represent ancient latin/african cultures in their games they should start by representing the people correctly too. I hope this helps you understand

Why does no one say "it's not represent Chinese people?" Yes genshin world building is inspired by many actual culture but if we talk the playable characters? No, every playable characters does not take the actual peron in the world, instead they always use anime style
Genshins primary and sole purpose is to generate revenue. It's been shown in the past that lighter skinned characters sell well to their primary source of revenue (china) so why would they waste time and resources on making characters that appeal to the minority and won't make as much revenue? Not saying I agree with this at all. Trust me I'd love some hot dark skinned characters but it's not profitable to make them so they won't. Sadly just how it is
@@ghosttea3802 but here the thing and it's a common criticism with your argument you are making the skin colour=culture argument. That's not how culture works culture is a belief, a way of life yes it represented more by your darker colours but it's not your right to say who can and can't represent culture. Would it be better and nice change if they did? Sure but not alot of people will care cause we don't care we just care about you knowing culture around the world and good characters. You need to realise this is a fictional game, a fictional universe where they can take whatever they want and do whatever they like. What if they didn't do this and replaced them with idk a kangaroos and moose people? Will you lot be saying the same situation as we are now or will you lot layoff? If this was based on our world then sure your argument would hold some claim. Like the video showed Fontaine was meant to be french and UK culture but as a fellow Englishman my culture wasn't very represented very well and had little of our culture apart from a few food items. Idc but if you are gonna make these claims then where was you lot making a big deal about our representation? It's called double standard. You can't even say this stuff but then say it's different when it comes to you and you lot deserve exceptional treatment when you didn't argue for others. See the problem with these type of arguments now? You argue for culture but only when it's yours and no one else's. And I didn't say anything cause again idc I go into a game to just enjoy it not find something to complain about something that won't even be an issue when the nation releases because we are all enjoying the content
I understand why people are upset, it would be nice to see characters that look like you in games and media you support that aren't built off of a stereotype. But like you said this is about money and unfortunately we're on the losing end a lot of the time when going up against that all mighty dollar.
I’ve spent close to 1K USD when I used to play the game two years ago and still deleted it a while back. Sunk cost fallacy is stupid, your money is already gone. Keeping the game downloaded will do nothing for the boycott, these people need to face the hard truth.
The funniest thing about this "controversy" is that Americans are seemingly the only playerbase that actually care about this stuff. When it comes to representation ill admit that Genshin isnt the best, but they do try. Their depiction of Chinese, Japanese, French, and Middle Eastern Cultures feels genuine to me, and as someone from the regions i feel really happy that my culture is being represented in a game. Its not just about skin color, its about way more than that. Its about language, architecture, food, and so much more. Obviously this is a game so i dont expect them to be 1-to-1 representations of the real world, but its pretty close. I feel like americans spend too much time worrying about skin color and not enough time actually caring about true representation. My pet peeve with Mihoyo is that while Liyue does its best to represent China, it only represents Northern Chinese culture and leaves out Southern and West China. China is a vast and diverse region, itll be nice for them to accurately represent the whole country and not just the northern parts.

I don't understand why Genshin Impact is the only game being called out. If you are going to call them out, do the same with all the other games guilty of the same thing. Otherwise, it just seems like you are trying to cancel Genshin Impact just because it is popular, so your cause has little to no meaning nor effect.
Wait, about Ororon, didn't the archons also have demon names, even Paimon? So is no one demanding them to correct that? I mean what exactly did you expect....? They couldnt do anything about it in the end, no changes were made so they were defeated. of course they'll pull for the characters even if they are lighter than they should be.
Honestly, people need to realize that hoyoverse isn’t a western company, where they will change their social media icons to rainbow for the image of being “inclusive.” They are an East Asian company, and more than 50% of their revenue base is in East Asia, namely China, Japan and Korea. Now a quick google search on beauty standards in these countries will tell you everything. Genshin is not a game where you can see your own skin color as representation for the common folk in your country, it never has been. Genshin is not trying to be an inclusive game, genshin is trying to be a profitable game, it always has been since launch.
That pretty much just sums up the whole thing. A lot of these people don't gain much from engaging in any controversies, the real winner is always the company. It is a shame that these beauty standards are stopping them from appealing to wider audiences, but can it really be considered a loss if they never cared about a "wider audience" or "inclusivity" in the first place? Theoretically if all the international servers were to stop having players, they'd still rack in consistently large income in Chinese (or at least East Asian) playerbases.
@@asweetlilpotato East Asian beauty standards don’t matter when you’re a global game and hoyo is the only one who hasn’t realized that, dislyte, reverse 1999, cookie run kingdom, pokemon, all are East Asian game companies that are filled with dark skins

Genshin CS responded appropriately. It is game - a work of fiction. It should not be taken as a real world scenario. In fact, Genshin, in my opinion is the most inclusive game that I played since they try to reference cultures from all over the world into the game but making it as a new world inside the game. Just look at the character names and how they try to incorporate names from different nationalities. Bennett, Nahida, Kokomi, Neuvilette, Mavuika, Arlecchino, Ningguang, Sethos, etc. Try to compare it to WuWa where most characters and future characters have Chinese names. Bottomline, it's just a game. Worry about something else. The world has enough problems as it is. To all the boycotters, just stop playing the game. It's that simple.
dont need inclusion, need a good game i'm not white i dont feel bad when my face or skin color isnt in games and people that do are weird and have no personalities

Sure, but wouldn't it be nice if non asian players got a bit more love from Mihoyo? The whole "if you don't like it, don't play it" thing is very superficial, people LIKE the game, they're just very saddened with X situation and want Mihoyo to take better decisions Why would you quit the game if it's a good one that you enjoy? It makes more sense to try and get the company's attention to the problem Plus, yeah, culture is more than skin color, but the whole skin color issue is deep rooted in actual prejudice If we keep on carrying the "skin color doesn't matter" mindset, we're just going to keep fueling colorism even further, and that's not good I personally really like the designs for both Natlan and Sumeru's characters, I'm pretty sure almost everyone thinks the same, but it doesn't change the fact that they're based off cultures from countries where people are by majority of color What's wrong with dark skin?
As a guy from South America, I say: From my point of view, I don't see any type of racism. Geshin seems to be inspired more than based on cultures, it's like they take a small visual base that resembles the culture, but the rest is just world building for the game. And in my opinion, one should always take into account the cultural context and for whom this form of media is created. In the case of China, it's obvious that they will have more appreciation for white or pale skin color, not only because of the majority of the population, but for many other reasons as well. I really think it would be cool to have more variation in skin colors! But I don't think it's a problem (Genshin), not having it.
How do you feel about the characters based after real-world African/Mesoamerican deities (Kinich, Olorun etc) being portrayed as white characters? I believe that's where a lot of the anger is coming from.
Still weird how all the enemy types have the darkest skintones and are based on irl indigenous tribes as well as every single dark playable character is weak or mid at best lmao.
Honestly I’m okay with their choice… though they could tan the NPC’s but we don’t know that until we see the region…. My main concern is their overall design… honestly I don’t feel invested in pulling for any of them since their designs are not appealing… neither is their kit It’s basically Fontaine Ark type being often forgotten but in my case is that EVERYTHING about them is just… eh
The thing with boycott is that nobody is gonna sacrifice their love for their waifu or husbando to satisfy other people's thirst for drama. Players playing games for the gameplay, not politics. Not to mention this isnt even politics, it's just an opportunity to get attention to make money
I want people to know a few things- 1. you can use more than 1 email for the petitions. It started to go quite after 100k hit. After 50k it was being slow and after 100k it just SILENCES. 2. People boycotting are doing it WRONG. They think they can play the games without giving them money By going “f2p” which is wrong. You give them money by playing AND interacting with their post REGARDLESS it negative or positive. 3. We aren’t their focus audience. 4. This is a fantasy game. 5. Hoyo did what all creators/artist do. They use references/examples of all types to create THEIR OWN thing. So in this case Natlans culture ISNT any of the references they used. Natlan culture is natlan. 6. Just cuz they named characters the same as things in real life, doesn’t mean they have to be a copy and paste of that reference/example they use. Example: a person their their OC “Jesus” does that mean their oc has to look like Jesus? No. Keep in mind these few things people. BTW IM NOT SAYING THEY SHOULDNT ADD MORE DIVERSITY!!! But “CHANGING” the characters they made already as if they were wrong in the first place? Is absolutely racist. 6 different characters are variations of tan out of the 9 characters introduced. The reason the introduction looked different from splash art for the first 3 are ✨OMG LIGHTING✨ woOoW. Id rather sign a petition to encourage diversity in Genshin vs CHANGE them because I like the characters that came out because their beautiful and did nothing wrong to deserve such hatred and such racist jerks washing them as if them being the color they are is wrong.
Sorry to burst your bubble but MiHoYo is NOT listening. Western players are an overwhelming minority. Chinese and east Asian players by far make up the largest part of Genshin players. Chinese beauty standards heavily lean into "white people = beautiful" and China itself is a very homogonous country, to put that into perspective 97% of China are Han Chinese and Han Chinese are the largest ethnic group in the world, so concepts such as "diversity" are foreign to them and many Chinese see such concepts as "western" and thus such concepts are generally met with hostility by the Chinese. Especially when coupled with the fact that the CCP restricts Chinese internet access. So no, MiHoYo has little to no incentive to pander for western audiences like you and me, all you can really do is just play the game, it sucks, wah wah. I don't play Genshin or any Mihoyo game whatsoever, so I have no real stake in this, but the "boycotters" have to consider: If Genshin Impact is erasing cultures it's supposed to be representing, then why do you still want to engage with a game that you believe is in some way bigọted, F2P, or otherwise? The fact that many of the "boycotters" still actively engage with the game despite it supposedly being harmful would suggest to me that either the harm being caused isn't as substantial as they think it is (if at all,) or that even in spite of the issue at hand you'd still chose to willingly engage with a company you believe is racist. Needless to say, that isn't a really good look, even if they don't intend for it to come off that way. It paints the picture that they don't truly care or are fully committed about the cause they allegedly care so much about. And if they aren't fully able/willing to show their care or commitment to a cause, _then why should anybody else?_
So as a newish player, im going to comment on a few things. 1. Its actually up for debate that they are erasing culturr since the region isnt out yet, all of the problems has just been skin tones 2. Sunken cost fallacy sucks, and some other people probably had it as a comfort game or somethinh like that 3.youre final point is actually something non boycotters want to know
There's a fine line between criticizing what you love in hopes of change, and having to step back from something and accept that this product is not for you. In this case, the boycotter's need to step back and accept that this game is never going to be what they truly want it to be. And that sucks. I understand. It sucks to have to come to terms with the fact that a game is very close to what they want it to be, but still is not quite there. Their acceptance phase will come eventually.
It's so weird too since there were no black characters when they started playing but now they're demanding they be added. So what even made them play it to begin with?
@@pdpgb being black was never an issue until they started taking our culture and basically saying the people of that culture aren’t pretty enough to be in the game
As a latinamerican, from one of the two top player countries mentioned in this video, I can tell you I haven't met a single person playing this game that cares or even considered skin color before, our discussion was mostly about the mythos they would present (Mayan? Aztec? Inca?) not the amount of melanin in their skin, reducing a whole culture to skin color just doesnt feel right, it is a free game inspired by real world locations, not representing them, people will always find something to complain about, if they add a black character today tomorrow's complain is that he isnt courageous enough or that there is only one, or that he said this one thing this one time, or that we dont have enough red skin characters... It is neverending As a game developer the best option is to ignore the loud minority and focus on actually making a good game that will make enough money to allow you to keep both your job and that game running, not saying this is the ideal, but sadly it is what happens in a world where everyone wants to feel offended in everyone else's behalf 😔

@@Dr.Rofatnik No it's not. If physical diversity is that important, then I as an Asian should not play or watch any entertainment that have Latin American, African or Hawaiian as the protagonist because it doesn't represent me.
Let's put it into perspective. 100k out of 60+Mil is 1/600+. Let's say you have a restaurant that serves 600+ usual customers and then 1 person comes in, asks only for water and starts complaining that you don't make the food the way they wants you too make it or else bad review on Facebook. That's what this "boycott" is, a joke.

It still feels stupid when the player base is SO massive and most haven't even heard of this petition so the numbers are, like, less than 1 percent of the player base or something, not actually a big deal, but it's still more sensible than going "I'm going to totally ignore this free thing that's so massive it won't notice my non-existant impact leaving in the slightest, that'll show them who's boss!"
@pipedream2556 as a f2p game, genshin gets money from data monetisation, sponsorships, and more. they get money from people downloading the game and playing it. to truly boycott genshin, people need to avoid the company entirely.

They prioritise the cn community so unless majority of the cn community brings this up to attack hyv, then nothing will happen.

I'm not saying I agree with this take, I would genuinely love to see more dark skinned characters in Hoyo games. However, there is a basically 0% chance for Chinese people to even care about this to cause drama for Hoyo.
Most sane people in the west also dont care. The average person looks at something that represents them thinking "Its Nice" but they also dont care if it dont

My biggest gripe with Twitter and really western media in general is that the loudest ones seem to think that just by having varying skin tones, you'll already being "diverse". Something about that feels so disingenuous.
And it seems more disingenuous to have your culture represented but not your people. The least they could do was make them just a bit more tan 😭 not even for representation just the fact that it would make sense they would be tanner considering they’re environment 💀
@@MegaHoopsandyoyo first off, skin color isn't always about environment. Secondly, what does not in the west supposed to mean? @@MegaHoopsandyoyo uhh, I mean. When it comes to skin tone, sun isn't the only thing going towards how dark you are. I simply disagree with the idea that culture can be represented by skin color. Honestly not just SEA. We have a huge both legal and black market whiting products lines in africa which not only makes millions (heck I know many colleagues in medical school who dropped out just to become bootleg steroid creams makers and now they make more than a consultant).

(Especially in my family)
Also we're obsessed with your country (+ Japan and Korea) just sayin

I'm from Korea and my friends who play Genshin are mostly like "That character looks cool but how good are they?".
It's mostly Meta here and their waifus and husbandos are usually top tier characters.
You would probably reconsider if the characters look like Concorde characters. The truth is, mihoyo characters are both meta and waifu. The least waifu character is still very good looking.
My favs also tend to be meta (at least at time of release) like Hu Tao, Nahida, Ayaka. I'd roll for them anyway but it's a nice coincidence.
@SourDonut99
Highly agree
Concorde is peak representation with little player based since the character models are repulsive.
Problem is in genshin every character of color has a bad kit
Personally, I wish that Natlan characters have more melanin, and I do understand and agree with why people are dissatisfied. However, the boycott was a poor decision that was also planned out impulsively.

She needs vitamin D!
that would be the case if its set on earth with our sun's level of uv rays. but its not
@@razrafz True.
Next thing we know they'll be telling us that teyvat doesn't even have a real sun.

it is called the sunk cost fallacy and it will keep people playing... especially if they were at the top of a pvp type game.
I spent
it happened to me when i got massive burnout from playing genshin, where i log in for a few days then never touch the game for a few months until a new character dropped or character im interested in dropped, though i never spent a lot for the game, just a few rupiahs either welkins or just primos.

I don't know if someone mentioned it on teh comments, but there is an extra layer in this controversy. Asian people don't seem anime characters as white, but as Asian. And Asian players prefer to buy this kind of characters than dark skinned ones.
Some actually prefer the tanned charcaters but still generally pale color is preferable which explains the popularity of white hair girls
I've been trying to break it though 😅
I think one example of Asian people seeing anime characters as specifically Asian is Bersek's author. I don't remember much personally, but I remember that even though Guts is apparently supposed to be European, Norse, i don't recall the rest, the thing that confused me the most was that the author said he still considers Guts to be Japanese.

Yeah but they still hate people with dark skin you can't take African cultures and not have African people in the game it's very weird and speaks volumes this world loves black culture but hate the people
If genshin was more open to pov then they would make twice as much as they do now but because only Asians play the game I understand why they stick to the Asian and white audience but don't use other pov cultures then

Sunk cost fallacy isn’t a fallacy when you could still be enjoying your spent $1000, but you are actively choosing not to. 🤷🏻♀️
The obsession with skin color is crazy

@@sakiamira but it did make hoyo do something.. not this pathetic "boycott".. everyone is sick and tired of AMERICANS calling everything racist.. yes.. I bet we'll see another month with record profits after this "boycott".
Btw where was the "respect other cultures" controversy when Hades made their Greek gods Black?
This needs to be shouted from the high heavens, seriously. That one is even more blatantly taken from greek myth, unlike Hoyo which is mostly just borrowing names, concepts, design, etc, and making a mix mash of everything.
Hades hate, anyone? No? Okay.
One more thing, not everyone playing Genshin has twitter and some see Genshin twitter as the toxic part of the community. No wonder they're not taken too seriously. I hope they have the same energy to help the real POC and not just the pixelated ones.

Bro has NOT seen a single of the East Asian game company other than hoyo
that's not an excuse, dislyte is also chinese and has diverse characters. At the very least, it makes the game less boring.

I agree with what you said but why are you involving Wuwa in this..
The game is literally at version 1.1. Don't involve Kuro in this racism bullshit

truee dude natlan its inspired in precolombine latin america LITERALLY BEFORE IT WAS DISCOVERD FOR THE EAST THATS CENTURIES AGO and white people make it a war playing the heroes when we latin americans couldnt care less, we are even making fun about this meaningless war in the comunity abot white people saying they are not white enough, what is their source to say that we are not all blac we are tanned we are white too and most of us DIDNT ASK TO BE DEFENDED ITS A FANTASY GAME
Sure, but wouldn't it be nice if non asian players got a bit more love from Mihoyo?
The whole "if you don't like it, don't play it" thing is very superficial, people LIKE the game, they're just very saddened with X situation and want Mihoyo to take better decisions
Why would you quit the game if it's a good one that you enjoy? It makes more sense to try and get the company's attention to the problem
Plus, yeah, culture is more than skin color, but the whole skin color issue is deep rooted in actual prejudice
If we keep on carrying the "skin color doesn't matter" mindset, we're just going to keep fueling colorism even further, and that's not good
I personally really like the designs for both Natlan and Sumeru's characters, I'm pretty sure almost everyone thinks the same, but it doesn't change the fact that they're based off cultures from countries where people are by majority of color
What's wrong with dark skin?
As a guy from South America, I say:
From my point of view, I don't see any type of racism.
But I don't think it's a problem (Genshin), not having it.
nah Chinese people have darker skin tone majority. Pale skin is seen as rare and beautiful and rich.
I mostly agree, it just feels majorly disappointing and a let down
Honestly I’m okay with their choice… though they could tan the NPC’s but we don’t know that until we see the region….
My main concern is their overall design… honestly I don’t feel invested in pulling for any of them since their designs are not appealing… neither is their kit
It’s basically Fontaine Ark type being often forgotten but in my case is that EVERYTHING about them is just… eh
The thing with boycott is that nobody is gonna sacrifice their love for their waifu or husbando to satisfy other people's thirst for drama.
Players playing games for the gameplay, not politics. Not to mention this isnt even politics, it's just an opportunity to get attention to make money
having people of color isnt politics? its just real life.
I want people to know a few things-
1. you can use more than 1 email for the petitions.
I also have 2,445 blocks on twitter 💀because of this garbage lol
I’m not sorry but this video you made is just funny and I love it 😭✨
Sorry to burst your bubble but MiHoYo is NOT listening.
At the end of the day, the sun is shining, the grass is blooming and there's still summer vacation and while it might sound stupid to just say "touch grass", if issues like this are bothering you, then i just advice you to have some fresh air. @@Eric0225 did you read what I said or just completely disregard it?
I don't play Genshin or any Mihoyo game whatsoever, so I have no real stake in this, but the "boycotters" have to consider:
If Genshin Impact is erasing cultures it's supposed to be representing, then why do you still want to engage with a game that you believe is in some way bigọted, F2P, or otherwise?
1. Its actually up for debate that they are erasing culturr since the region isnt out yet, all of the problems has just been skin tones
2. Sunken cost fallacy sucks, and some other people probably had it as a comfort game or somethinh like that
3.youre final point is actually something non boycotters want to know
There's a fine line between criticizing what you love in hopes of change, and having to step back from something and accept that this product is not for you.
In this case, the boycotter's need to step back and accept that this game is never going to be what they truly want it to be. And that sucks. I understand. It sucks to have to come to terms with the fact that a game is very close to what they want it to be, but still is not quite there.
Their acceptance phase will come eventually.
this is well said
It's so weird too since there were no black characters when they started playing but now they're demanding they be added. So what even made them play it to begin with?

It is neverending
As a game developer the best option is to ignore the loud minority and focus on actually making a good game that will make enough money to allow you to keep both your job and that game running, not saying this is the ideal, but sadly it is what happens in a world where everyone wants to feel offended in everyone else's behalf 😔
