    I don't usually comment on videos, but I just wanted to say that you guys are doing a great job on the channel. You, Wyatt, are very excellent at presenting the topics and I'm sure that the same could be said about all the instructors in the rally school (wish I could go some day, but it's half way around the world for me). Always loved rally driving and a channel like this is something unique - keep it up!

    Good observation that they use thick gloves in drag racing. Top Fuel and Funny Car drivers actually wear two pairs of gloves. A thinner pair similar to Nomex underwear and a very thick pair over them

    Also, I highly recommend buying _in person,_ where you can put them on. Sizing charts are for crap. Fit is very important. And yes, good ones will not be cheap. [*] Once you're used to (competition) driving with gloves, it'll feel wrong without them. (I club rallyx with my driving gloves.)
    [*] Yes there are SFI/FIA rated gloves for ~40$. They don't last long. They don't wear well. And the fine print... they're only rated for 3-5s of fire protection.

    • @juanramon2790

      Simpson has a few retail spots across the country. And most tracks have a "pro shop". (VIR has TMI. AMP has Discovery Parts. Road Atlanta has one, too, but it's always been closed when I was there. My current gloves came from Sebring.) Also, almost any large motorsport event will have a trailer or two of equipment vendors.

      jfbeam they don’t rate gloves that way. It’s temperature for a period of time. A fire that’s 100 degrees won’t burn through the gloves nearly as fast as 1000 degrees.

  • @nutellabrah6718
    @nutellabrah6718 5 років тому +4

    Thats the main point at the end. The gloves kinda "hook/latch" onto the wheel so your fingers are more relaxed and squeezing less which is less fatiguing over time. You don't have to squeeze your hands to control it, it auto latches on and you kinda just pull on the wheel with a semi relaxed grip to manipulate which allows for finer and faster dynamic movements and more relaxed and precise manipulation. If you have to squeeze with your hands, your arms become more clunky and can change directionally less smoothly. Great topic.

Also installed a Suede with leathet st.wheel with contrast stitching cost was 55 dollars off ebay too for more comfort and grip..now I need suspension system to smooth out the ride or feel less road bumbs and what not. Never have had problems with my gloves they do make a difference at the end of the day though.

    Not so much rally related, but if you're doing track days or HPDEs, having brightly colored gloves are good for signaling point bys and alerting corner workers.
    I have a pair of florescent yellow Alpinestars that not only feel great and provide protection, but are also a good communication aid to others when on track.

    • @Teamoneilrally
      @Teamoneilrally  5 років тому +1

      That's a solid point! In rally, when a car goes off, it's up to the driver and co-driver to get out and signal to other cars that they're OK (or not). This is often at night, around blind corners, etc. High-vis gloves would be a really smart move.

    I started daily driving with gloves a few months ago and not it feels weird not driving with them.
    - My hands are nice and warm in the winter (before the heater kicks in) but I can hold the wheel just fine during the summer (instead of having to hold a scorching hot wheel).
    - I don't get distraced by the little "oddities" on different wheels (like different materials, wear etc.) since I don't feel them.
    - I can't use a touchscreen with them (so literally can't get distracted by my phone in the car).

      @JayJaxRHS13 5 років тому +4

      You ever wore racing gloves and tried to turn pages on a notebook while holding it in the air? Its about damn near possible, if the co-driver had to wear gloves their chances of crashing due to wrong pace notes (or no pace notes at all) goes up by a whole lot. Overall safer to have co driver not wear gloves for the sake of both driver and them self

    • @mickael_guitara

    I use long-finger cycling gloves (thin leather on the palm, mesh top) for daily driving in summer and similar, but with insulated top in colder seasons. Started wearing these when I had a stock ultra-slippery plastic wheel on my Golf mk6. Then I installed a grippy R-line wheel, but the glove habit still persists.

    Been using Sparco Land RG3.1 for about two years now, great glove, certified, tactile, about medium thickness and affordable. Edit: They're great on leather/alcantara steering wheels as well, get some heat into them and they almost start to stick, so definitely agree with less grip force comment - as it will reduce driving fatigue.

    Cycling gloves are much better, but leave your fingers exposed, and you have to wash them and oil them, so they don't dry out.
    Driving gloves are like new leather shoes: you need to fit them to your hands, and get used to how the feel and work.
    Dressy leather gloves are not driving loves.

    The thin 3 ppint harness through a stock seat is making me cringe so hard. That's not safe at all.... Even with gloves on

    So in this fiery accident your hands will be nice and fresh on the steering wheel while the rest of you is an ash pile ;) and somehow they are both grippier and slippier... gloves are a necessary evil no more than that, they remove feel and grip, they make your hands sweat more, they add an element of discomfort with inevitable bunching even with the best gloves. The only people to have them when you don’t need them is as a poser / dreamer and / or someone who inexplicably needs them to get in some kind of zone because it makes them feel like a ‘racing driver’

      Alan Hillyard 1) he’s not racing now, so not wearing full fire suit. 2) any actual rally or rally sprint, you are required to wear fire suit, HANS device, helmet, etc. not sure we understand your comment about the rest of him being a pile of ash...
