@@Justin_Waters You need some Chicken Tenders bro
@@Justin_Waters Dude, do you have to be racist and a whiner in every video and comment in this channel? If you don't like it just let it be, but mind you, you're giving him more attention and more engagement than anyone you're complaining of supporting Josh here so...
@@Justin_Waters Man, SITCHO ASS DOWN! RESPECT THE WEISSMAN BALLBAG WHO IS THIS DUE 🗣💥💥
Broooo 😂😂😂
I’ll never make my own bread but I sure do watch all of papas videos as if I do 😂
Don't be lazy
Honestly You should try with something simple its a satisfying result.
Just saw one of your comment under fayefilms' video haha I literally went like "hold up...is that the same person ?"
It's honestly sooo worth it. I'll never buy bread from a store again unless it's a fancy bakery
A little effort, a little work ahead of time, and you'll be rewarded with bread so damn good you'll ask yourself "wtf is that crap I have been buying for decades from the store, cuz it ain't bread,... THIS is bread!" Then proceed to devour half a loaf in the blink of an eye...
Seriously though bread making is stupidly easy and the hardest part is the wait times for rise and proofing... the outcome though, oh my god... miles above any "fancy bread" you'll buy in a typical supermarket... and will rival that of your local bakery with a little practice... plus that price, come on... 15 dollar loaf at a bakery but you can make it for like 45cents and get 2+ loaves more... like the first commenter said, don't be lazy. And trust me it's worth it any day of the week
one of my fav but cheaper eps so far (trying to get more into bread making). idea for another series: as many different cheap meals you can make with the same ingredients. that way we’re not fighting with leftovers.
I have this vision of you and a housemate throwing old cheese sauce at each other from across the kitchen.
It would also help to do that so you only have to buy everything once, since these "but cheaper" things tend to assume you have roughly $60 to spend on all the ingredients beforehand
You’re describing taco bell
I think some of us need to see a “But Cheaper: Extreme Edition” special episode. Straight up struggle meals. I’m honestly curious to see what Josh can pull off for less than a dollar per serving.
Indeed. To spend $100 per month on groceries, for 3 meals a day, for one person, comes out to $1.19 per meal. And frankly, spending more on food (something people DIE without) than one might spend on one's phone or something (necessary in today's world, but not deadly without it), is beyond fucking absurd. That it's even seemingly necessary to spend up to $100 on food each month, is already insane. To have to spend more is grounds for justifiable homicide.
SOS, mac and cheese with a hot dog, egg fried rice, quesodilla's, meatloaf,
Or a version of "but cheaper" for people who can't afford to get a fancy dough mixer machine or run the appliances for hours in this nightmare economy
@@DoremiFasolatido1979 each month? Fuck im lucky if $100 lasts a week…
@@Deathraze1 Same. My point though is that even $400 a month for a family of 4 is an obscene amount for something so abundant and so necessary. And yet people spend often far more than that every month, even if they're "super-couponing". It's functionally impossible to spend $100 per person each month on food. And again, even that is still abhorrently extreme.
Everything is geared toward keeping the poor, poor.
I bought that same Lodge dual pan Dutch oven thingy awhile back after watching your sourdough vid with Babish. Highly recommend it!! It does an amazing job with bread, as well as giving you 2 different cast iron pans with myriad uses. Just so incredibly versatile.
I bought it too, but the Amazon seller did a bait and switch sending me only a lodge cast iron pan.
D:
Those of you who are intimidated by the idea of having a huge roast left over just for one or two steak sandwiches... Expand this idea to include leftovers and maybe it'll make more sense.
You have some bougie bread and leftovers from Sunday dinner. All you have to do is sauté some veg, melt a little cheese... you've got a nice dinner for Monday night in 30 minutes or less. The beauty of sandwiches is that they are flexible and adjustable.
how do people not already know that
Buddy, nobody is intimidated by having leftover roast
Even a few days after when the beef is losing its moisticity just chop it up with some bbq sauce for more sandwiches, quesadillas, or a salad
I love how that bread is basically my sourdough that I spend a week on making a starter for and then a day baking and you made it overnight 😭 I still love my sourdough starter but dang
The thing about a starter is you can just keep feeding it and have it whenever you need it. No need ot make one for each loaf.
@@aetropose5405 yeah I just get lazy or forget and don’t feed it for a whole week and if I can’t make a starter from the bottom (the still good part) of that starter then I have to start all over 😅 but for people who actually take care of their starter, once it’s made it’s amazing to have
@@Justin_Waters I didn’t over hype him I was talking about the bread… I make bread.. his was just less time consuming than mine and essentially the same..
@@Justin_Waters You're such a clown. Imagine writing all these comments on every single video. Especially with a white ass name like Justin. Looks good PAPA. Personally though, I think horseradish is married to the best steak sandwiches. I might try this with a horseradish aioli.
Cheese sauce with a bit of horseradish 👍
@@Justin_Waters this is But Cheaper, homie, not But More Original. He didn't act like he was being innovative, he acted like he was saving people money & giving them something good to eat. Which he was. So calm yourself.
Yeah, but of a miss kiss not having horseradish involved
@@Justin_Waters or... It's a sandwich, with steak on it... Meaning it's a "steak sandwich"
@@Justin_Waters the definitions of those two sandwiches state otherwise
I love the “but cheaper” series. It has encouraged me to cook a variety of meals at home keep it coming !!
I know we're here for the sandwich, but I really appreciate the super-quick bread recipe here. I've been making sourdough using Josh's recipe (starter and bread), and this recipe is a breeze in comparison. Thanks for another great video, Josh!
Can’t wait for Papas merch drop!!!!!!!

Boss man, I’ve been a subscriber before you blew up, and now you’re nearing a billion channel views. Just wanted to say thank you for following this dream and giving all of us a chance to create beautiful food alongside your crazy ass. Lotta love for you brother and I hope that I can someday shake your hand. You’ve helped refuel my passion, as well as literally millions of other people, for food. You deserve all the fame and fortune that’s followed. THANK YOU PAPA FROM ALL OF US
Thank you for helping us in these difficult times, Joshua ... I love that bread recipe and will be making it (and this entire recipe) very soon.
I really appreciate your content, a steak sando is a staple, and it's such a great way to honor it. Thanks Josh, you're a national treasure
Thank you very much for the bread recipe, i did it and it's crazy how delicious it is 🙂 first attempt in my live and it's better than the one in there grocery and i'm from Poland where we pay a lot of attention to the bread quality 🙂
Meat cutter here, ever had a teres major? Incredibly affordable little budget cut, with similar tenderness to a tenderloin. Can be sliced thin for something like this or for a mini wellington. Average size is around 10oz or so, but they can get up to about a pound.
I have been waiting sooo long to start cooking your food. But I don’t have a scale 😭 thank god you have conversations now!!!
Looks goooood. What would be cool (and kinda funny) is if you added a category for how much money it would equal for "time" the recipe took and that would be included into the final cost. Like waiting for bread dough to proof, etc... Time is more valuable than money haha
I mean, it’s not like you’re actively kneading it overnight, you literally just put it in the fridge and do whatever you want
Appreciate this series in these hard times josh❤️
"It's almost always the most economical"
It's almost like making your own bread was the staple of poor people's diet for centuries
This is kind of a historical myth.
Most poor families couldn't afford an oven and so they'd buy their bread from the village baker. Very few "poor" people were baking their own bread.
baking you're own bread isn't even very economical, preheating the oven to 500 degrees and then baking bread for an hour is gonna cost at least a dollar of electricity
@@jeffcoreyandme Not to mention my time... the 5 to 18 hours it takes to actually make bread just kills it for me.
@@salvadorHombre in many instances, the bakers would allow the very poor to come and use the oven one day a week after the baker was finished working to bake their own bread
@@eliisaac Lol what? are you standing there staring at it proof? The actual process of making bread is like 15 min if you know what you're doing
That succulent thick dripping beef with dripping cheese sauce.. I am dead!!!!
A brined Bottom Round roast also works great at a decent price, for the steak part. We use it in our household for steak sandwiches, or to smoke and serve with chimichurri.
Bought the book 5 days ago, and I can't stop making things from this. like the HOLY eggs benedict😍. I owe u my life
If you cant find the roast its often called a blade roast or top blade roast. An alternative is a flatiron steak which is basically the blade roast split and tendon removed.
I swear this channel can save a life
I've literally applied for a job, went through a 4 step interview process, worked a pay period, got paid enough to afford a $12 sandwich, and he's still folding his dough.

I like to do the reversed toasted ( toasted on the inside) technique to save the roof of my mouth cause this type of bread is a destroyer when toasted.
Hi Josh. Always a pleasure being early to your videos. Keep cooking and keep inspiring.
It’s been a while since I’ve made homemade bread. Adding this recipe to my list. Looks delicious!
Cool, the bread by looking at the process is an in-between of a sourdough and regular kind a bread. Super cool
This reminds me so much of a sandwich Sala and Betty served when they first opened but it had green beans instead of peppers. it was DELICIOUS.
I chuckle every time Josh says “onion” in his boujee accent
we’re in a heatwave rn but this absolute menace got his oven on max for an HOUR?! My family would end me before I could even turn on the oven
I would have to argue that this is not a steak sandwich at all. It is a roast beef sandwich. Still looks amazing papa.
I dont even cook that often yet I enjoy these videos damn
I love PAPA’S sandwiches 😍😍😍
THE B ROLL GETS ME EVERY TIME👌🔥
5:32 "reduce heat to medium, and cook another minute or so, until beautifully cooked to your liking".
Next step... toss that fungus in the circular file where it belongs.
looks absolutely BUSSIN Josh another great job
"Tech""Niequeue" yea, I like that Josh. 👌🏼
Just made this for lunch. Ridiculously good.
ITS THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AND U JUST MADE ME CRAVE FOR A SANDWICH JOSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Josh you should do peruvian foods! I’d love to see more South American dishes from you man :))
With such a large amount of onions and peppers in a sandwich (plus mushrooms plus mornay sauce), the steak becomes an afterthought. That's why a chuck roast works. But if you like a steak sandwich with minimal toppings, you cannot substitute a cheaper cut of beef without compromising flavor.
That was the sneakiest B-roll slip. I didn't expect it even though I heard you say "but". Expert game.
So happy to see a reduced amount of yeast in the bread.
Nice, another sandwich recipe. We don't have enough of those.
The real flex is Josh can afford the electrical bill to run the oven for 2 and a half hours for a steak and some bread in 2022
Have you ever cooked something and went like, naaah it can be done better? Lol
$3 steak sandwich
equipment 1000 $
Him: Making you're own bread is cheaper
Me: Laughs in swedish
MERCH DROP SOON!!!! I'm so ready
Your videos always amaze me that bread technique was perfect 🤙🏽 one weekend I’ll take a day to make my own bread to receive a kiss from “papa” ☺️
im watching this cuz im havin steak sandwiches for dinner tmr and need some topping ideas
That B roll music needs to be my ringtone.
Parchment paper for your bread. You can leave the hot pan in the oven and carry it cover to the oven on a round piece of parchment paper.
Also known as the chuck eye, or false tenderloin. Probably need to go to a butcher shop that processes whole animals, Supermarkets generally grind the entire chuck for ground beef. Just a tip from a Canadian butcher.Given the popularity for all the old "butcher's take" cuts these days the chuck eye is a very tasty one.
4:02 - How Superman places a screaming hot cast iron pot into a 500 degree oven... 😉
Lol imagine being hungry and you gotta wait several hours to eat a sandwich
The college student in me is thanking you right now ❤️
Made this late last week with on sale London broil cuts @2.99/lb…. Tasty!!

“Yeast Juice” is a phrase that I didn’t know would make me this uncomfortable💀
It’s 12:03am here. Why am I watching your yummy recipe 😋😂
For most people skip the making the bread part
sometime time is money, many hours spent to making the bread and washing all the dishes maybe worth 20 dollars including electricity bills
In that 2-3 hours spent I can work, have a good chat with friends while eating and save my energy
I love your B-Rolls ❤️
Yay!!! The dough lives!!!!
aint no way papa is making a better kit kat
One Thing is you should salt mushrooms right before or when adding to pan to draw out the moisture
The roof of my mouth hurt just watching you bite into that bread
I almost exclusively slow roast my joints of beef, lamb, and pork for around 12 hours these days. No matter how cheap they were, they're always tender enough to cut with a spoon afterwards. Leftovers are always sliced, portioned, and dropped in the freezer for future sandwiches.
I've never made my own bread. You make it look easy.... Imma try it ...yum yum 😋😋😋😋
I made bread for the first time after watching this video and you telling us to do so many times before and yeah, it's that good.
I love the fact that you've become part of my coking technique man xD

Lets not forget the day to make it....Josh.
Okay so I want to try and make every single one of Patricia's 77 Sandwiches from Bob's Burgers one Sandwich at a time. If it takes me a year to do so be it. As far as the budget goes I bet I could get Josh's videos to inspire me more to be able to not break the bank.

Can you make a series "but quick"? I think it would be the most helpful series (at least for me)
@Randall Seager brah actually i didn't know that but it's still only 9 videos in compare to 2 others series that have over 50 each
Thanks for the roast beef recipe, but I'm doing peppers, onions and mushrooms in bacon grease. Plus I'm having two slices of Swiss cheese on a toasted sourdough sliced loaf(Boudin from SF) to be specific. Love your videos
that bread. oh my god. i can't even find one like that in bakeries where i live. great video!
I did this (so wasn't going to bake bread) substituted shoshito peppers instead of green peppers. Everything was delicious.
just only a year after, that price of $12.50 is now easily $17.50 + 25% tip. We need this.

Someone could open a restaurant with all your “but cheaper” recipes and charge a normal price for them and make a crazy amount of profit on each item😂
