El-P and Killer Mike had both been making music for 15 years before they met. The story was that they were introduced by one of the guys at Adult Swim and hit it off instantly. El-P produced Killer Mike's album "Rap Music" and they had so much fun they released RTJ as just a side mixtape not expecting anything but it blew up bigger than anything they had done prior.

Hello Bob!! Super pumped you are covering these guys. EL-P is one of my favorite artists in hip-hop and Killer Mike is an absolute monster with his flow. Before Run the Jewels became a thing I had only heard him from a couple features. One being his feature on Outkast's album Stankonia, and the other being on one of El-P's albums. So when EL-P announced he was producing an entire album for Killer Mike (R.A.P. Music, which is great! Don't sleep on that one!) I was pretty surprised! . Even more surprised when they became a duo. But it has been a ride, the Run the Jewels records just get more hard hitting and more slick as they go.. and they are great live!!
EL-P is such an influential individual in the underground hip hop scene... but also influential for me personally. His style of futuristic/industrial/noisy production was one of the major reasons I began to fall in love with hip-hop music back in the day (I mainly listened to Metal and rock music beforehand). If you go back in time and start checking out some of the projects EL-P was involved with in the late 90's and early 2000's you'll discover that his output, and the quality of it, is absolutely insane. El-P's label Definitive Jux was very important in the ongoing development of underground/alternative hip hop music, just tons of forward thinking, creative material coming out of that label.
It's all really worth your time! I know you got tons on your plate and many many records to listen to before you check these out.. but if you are in the mood to listen to some classic experimental/alternative records in hip hop (stuff like Madvilliany, Atrocity Exhibition, etc.) Then I recommend starting with Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein, Mr. Lif - I Phantom, Aesop Rock - Labor Days and EL-P - Fantastic Damage. These are all well loved with underground hip-hop heads for good reason.
Anyways much love and respect from middle of nowhere Kentucky, I really appreciate your style of reaction videos, keep on keeping it real!

synthetic basses can be distorted too tho. and reverb doesn't always make stuff sound heavier. it makes it sound bigger i guess, or further away. which can help with heaviness. but there has to be some heaviness in the sound the reverb is being applied to in the first place.

To break the cycle of violence we need distance and therapy

I believe all cops truly are bad by design of the system. For example, my friend has an uncle whose a “good” cop but she still believes all cops are bad, so the statement isn’t about every cop is violent, but that it’s in their job to do bad things too, like all the nonsense things like weed that people go to jail for, and the way that police keep poverty thriving. I’ll start by saying an overlooked piece of history like the Tulsa Massacre: In the 1980’s, The Philly police department dropped bombs on homes of Black activists called the MOVE organization, knowing that children were inside, and it killed 11 people including seven children. The Philly Police Department committed a mass murder, including of children. That’s not taught in schools because america is shit to its very core and that’s obvious. It’s not about every cop is killing and beating people and planting false evidence though thats a lot of them, as well as all the police chiefs letting their officers continue working with dozens of excessive force complaints, stopping people without good reason, speeding through Black neighborhoods lawlessly when theyre not even chasing anyone, etc. It’s not even all about those individual actions but that policing as a whole, just breeds more crime. Rehabilitation is nonexistent, its all punishment, and that alone, as well as families being split, creates more crime. People are kidnapped by police for using drugs or even just weed. When the reason is that ridiculous, which hundreds of thousands are in prison for, it’s not excessive to call what they do, not that different from kidnapping. And when you look at all the violence that cops commit and influence to happen, it’s easy to see them as just a gang. If you search LASD gangs, you’ll see that gang members actually exist in police departments. Over 90% of people in prison never had a trial because they cant afford it. Police destroy homeless camps all the time and throw their belongings away, because it makes “cities look ugly”, and that’s the type of violence that a criminal would commit. I believe people who are violent or unsafe to the public should have some place to go where the public is defended from them, but what we have in America is completely excessive, it’s by far the biggest prison population in the world and it’s used for modern slavery, with prisoners being paid almost nothing for their work, whether its in fields or fighting California’s wildfires, or any of the jobs they have people do. The police exist to protect the ruling class and property, not people. They sometimes help people but the big picture of what they do, is the opposite of helping. I might not be bringing up the best points but this is just what came to my mind right now, in the endless sea of reasons why police should be.. at the very least, defunded. Theyre funded more and more every year, we spend more on police than most countries do on militaries. Even EVERY single democrat politician, despite saying they support BLM, (i support the movement but the organization are frauds too buying mansions), just funds the police more. Where America exists, with its extreme policing and extreme military, and needing to make enough money if you want to survive, is already far-right, so what people see as far-left is just… sensical, when you unlearn all the things that are taught. Crime prevention doesn’t usually relate to the police, theyre just crime punishment usually (though most murders go unsolved). Again this message isn’t the best, but just what i had right now.

Not every album needs to be extremely meaningful to be extremely good.
However, I think this album is very meaningful when contextualizing it. Two rappers in their 40s, becoming BFFs, taking their careers back from obscurity.

I feel like when you’re rating an album u shouldn’t necessarily feel like it checks certain boxes. Instead just absorb it as a whole and see how u feel about it in general regardless of it’s elements.

You should watch the movie "Enter the Void", it's shot in first person and it is about that drug you were talking about. Crazy movie, I think you would like the experience.

gotta agree with your thoughts on the police during ur DDFH reaction, sending my prayers to america rn and hoping for some actual institutional and systemic change to prevent this happening again
