Combining the classic design of the original D-Series regulators with the latest advances in breathing performance technology, SCUBAPRO engineers have created a 21st century regulator in quality, reliability, performance and style. The D420 features a brand new balanced valve - the Progressive Flow Control Valve - that is able to deliver abundant airflow for the best breathing performance, with a natural smoothness comparable to what you might experience breathing on the surface.
The D420 touts a long list of features to enhance any diver’s underwater experience. The uniquely shaped and ultra-durable fiberglass-re-enforced nylon casing allows the LP hose to be connected on the right or left side for maximum rigging flexibility.
A new dive/pre-dive system includes a switch on the top of the casing with a thumb tab for adjusting the direction of airflow right out of the valve. The highly efficient purge button is a technical jewel based on a new concept that gives the D420 its unique face.
Teamed with SCUBAPRO’s venerable MK25 EVO balanced piston first stage, this is a regulator system purpose-designed for today’s avid divers and SCUBAPRO brand enthusiasts everywhere.

I own and dive the first and second generation pilot which was described by the USN Experimental Dive Unit as the best deep water reg ever built . They presented Scubapro with a plaque stating the latter that hangs in their office in California . The original Air 1 and D series are direct decedents of the Pilot . In as much as the D420 follows in the D series lineage it has been completely redesigned with modern materials and no longer shares the co axial diaphragm / exhaust valve . The case has also been redesigned reducing the distance between the diaphragm and exhaust valve ( case geometry fault ) . The new D420 also has a Venturi Initiated Vacuum Assist lever something neither the Pilot or D series had . Like the Pilot the D420 also has the ability to be supported by two completely independent first stages . I am excited by the introduction of this regulator and can not wait to put one into service .

Just a slightly different layout, but still a D-series, I doubt it will breathe any better than a well adjusted D350 or D400 WarmwaterJack

You might be right. But the few divers we have had use say it breathes smoother than any other regulator out there (including the D400). The exhaust diaphragm on this model sits across from the inhalation diaphragm (rather than a dual purpose like the D350 & 400's) that alone should bump its performance.

It's $1000.... so yeah about the same as a Cinnamon Glaze (Beige) 2001 Dodge Neon with a dual cassette / CD audio system..
