Hi Luke, thanks for the great tasting video! We do whiskey and tea pairings and the Laphroaig 10 is one of our go-tos, however, our upcoming tasting is in Quebec and it is not yet available there. So I am looking at the quarter cask as a 'substitute'. I have already done my pairing and tasting research with the 10 year and I am hoping the quarter cask will be an easy swap in :) What we do is select teas from our inventory and we have folks sip a given tea, then sip the paired whiskey, then return to the tea. The transformation is exquisite! Your video was extremely helpful. I'm going to go ahead and try out the quarter cask. I like the more subdued smokiness, the addition of floral and the depth you speak of. I'll let you know how it works out. Also, your tasting notes are totally excellent!
Here in Canada, QC is actually $12-15 cheaper than the 10 year old but the 10 year is quite pricy. I prefer the QC so it works in my favour. Nice review btw.

Decent review m8, I had the quarter cask at a pub n asked for a bottle at christmas. I got the 10 year and noticed the difference before I realised I had the 10 year, but the similarities had me confused. The 10 year is definately bolder and oddly seems stronger. The quarter cask does stand out. It's the only smokey/peaty whisky that i've tried that is perfectely balanced. The sweet floral caramels carry the smoke right to the finish. I'm new to singles so this is quite exciting. Thumbs up!
I totally agree with you; comparing two/three whiskies at a time is the best way to find out differences between them. Sipping them one at a time lets your imagination and poor memory play tricks. BTW even if the distillers use colouring, its not necessarily mentioned in the label. It depends in what part of world bottling is sold. In Germany / north europe it is required that extra coloring must be mentioned in the label if used. Anyhow, QC is one of my all time favourites.
I have not tried Johnnie Walker red, but I would guess it is so well blended that it will be hard for you to pick up any distinct smells. It's also probably a bit young, which would account for the alcohol smell. I recommed buying a bottle of Glenmorangie Ten year old ("The Original") to try. If you're disappointed with that, Laphroaig 10 will give you the other side of the flavor/smell spectrum.
You really should try the cask strength version if Laphroaig, it's a little sparce in its availability but when you find it, it IS affordable (about 1.5x of the regular 10yo) the CS just packs sooo much flavour. Even at cask strength, I find water is not needed (or only a small amount)
In Germany the Quarter Cask is only about 2 - 4 EUR more than the 10yo, has 8% more alcohol + more flavour, as you mentioned. No idea why the pricing, but this leaves always going for the QC... :-)

The youthfulness of QC is much easier to detect when you compare it to an older whisky. I compared it to Caol Ila recently and noticed a similar youthfulness.
Ardbeg Corryvreckan! Quite wonderful, and slightly better than Uigeadail in my opinion. Also keep an eye out for Kilchoman. They're a newer distillery and their whisky is just reaching 6 years old, but it's already quite good. Their most recent release is Machir Bay, and once I get around to opening my bottle I'll do a video for you.
I had Laphroaig CS before, but I think my palate was a little underdeveloped at the time. It just tasted like strong Laphroaig 10 to me... But I keep hearing that I should try it! I'll buy another bottle the next time I find a nice deal :)

I'm saying this because I don't have the money to spend a lot of times in whisky. so each (almost rare) occasions to buy have to be a perfect choice with no disappointments!! eheh. really nice review! thanks a lot!
Nope. the Laphroig 10 is slightly more smoky. i would say, that the 10 years old laphroig has few more ppm. the quarter cask has more power and a bit more taste (the barrel is stronger), because of the small casks/barrels. i would say the quarter cask is more rich, but i prefer the laphroig 10 for the smoke in combination of smooth&mellow. you should try the laphroig px cask. the smoke smells like medicine :) I also like the smoke of the caol ila a lot.
Never got the tequila smell with QC... I also loathe tequila and have only drank the cheap stuff so maybe that is part of it. I actually thought this review was underwhelming, but that's because I'm biased. QC is my favorite scotch of all time and the scent of it alone is enough to get me doing backflips! lol

I recently bought the 10 and enjoy that too. Do you have any recommendations of another Scotch that's very Smokey with lots of peat? Thx
I have tried Red, it's truly awful. It has none of the complexity of a good scotch so it really shouldn't factor into your decision making. That being, said, Laphraoid QC, which is my favorite drink of all alcoholic beverages is not always for beginners.

Here in Sweden the QC is $52 while the 10 y/o is $58
At SAQ (Québec), there is a 25 cents difference between them. They are essentially the same price at 85$ CAD (about 63$ USD) .

QC to me I taste smoke and salt of the ocean. Excellent balance. Not a starter whiskey but DAMN does this have personality!

QC is good. I was amazed that I thought it was better than Lagavulin 16...
