saw someone gave you the simple answer on making steel, tar and brimstone in the firebowl cauldron to make steelfire. once youve done that can cook it together with iron bars to make steel. but if you get at least a tier 3 blacksmith or a named tier 4, they give a recipe for reinforce, with that you can turn iron reinforcements into steel ones or steel reinforcements back into bars. this lets you convert iron to steel at 1-1 ratio instead of 5 iron per steel, it is slower than cooking in a furnace, but saves you harvest time, 5x less harvesting to get the same amount of steel, more time playing the game and less hitting rocks. so once you have enough iron early start making any extra into reinforcements right away, then once you get a blacksmith give him the steelfire and let him turn it to steel.
also the most resource intense area to get started is up at godsclaw passage, just south of the bridge of the betrayer, can use someones maproom and to get there and back quickly, for getting started id make a potion of beastial memory and reset to get max expertise and beast of burden perk, lots of iron and stone inside the godsclaw and lots of dense trees just outside to the west, 1 trip and clearcut most of the stuff there and you should get about 20-30k each iron, wood, and stone, bring that back and cook it all up and should have enough to get a decent sized tier 3 base going. maybe 30 minutes of harvest time, just make sure to get the trees with the pickaxe not just regular axe to get all the resources from them resin bark branches and wood.

Thanks for the info! I felt kind of slow for forgetting the recipe. It's been over a year since I played but it's all coming back. I'm getting thralls now and I'm keeping my eye open for good crafting ones.
